Las Vegas Baby!!!!
Wifey and I went for vacation last year and it was an absolute blast. It was very hot but it's a dry heat so it wasn't that bad. We did all the touristy things.
There are so many things to do in Vegas, I don't even know where to start from.

@poster You should have stayed on the Strip cos that is where all the action is. Hope you don't mind d if I post a few pictures of my trip

None of the above made the cut.... cry
We had planned for a single story, 3 or 4 bath but as we begin the waka, our eyes begin chuck grin

Online advertised prices are $20k to $50k different from what the final end price will be.
Some builders sell the lots separately (Hidden Oak - $45k to $80k for a lot cry )
The communities we checked have lot premiums between $5k to $25k, adds to the house price, upgrades further adds more.

Most likely, we'll be doing a 4 bed, 3 bath, 2 story. cool
Stay tuned for pictures wink ...
The home buying market is different from what it has ever been.. We should have a solid headway (models for viewing, construction for other buyers or actual lot availability/permit for this home plan) in the next 60 days. Can't wait!!! kiss

Before end of June 2022, construction suppose don complete. cool

Congrats @mackynaija for moving to Texas! Never understood how people make it out in California. You get paid 6 figures but you cannot even buy a house for under $1.5 million in Silicon Valley. And rent is prohibitively expensive.
Sounds like this will be your first house. Have you thought about buying a duplex instead of a SFH? That way you can rent out one unit and live in the other unit. Some folks that own duplexes do not even have to pay a mortgage because the rent they charge covers the cost of the mortgage.
Just something to think about. Best of luck!

This post makes absolutely no sense.
Embassies all over the world charge visa fees to cover their running costs. If the Embassy does NOT process your visa application then they need to refund your visa fee plain and simple. If they processed your application, then they have rendered the service that you paid for.

Like someone else said, do you get a refund from WAEC if you do not get all A's in your subjects?

@whyna I really enjoyed reading your thread. I reside in the USA but I have always enjoyed traveling and I plan to travel to South East Asia some day. I got to know a lot about Vietnam by reading your thread and I hope you continue with this thread as it is informational, educative and pretty interesting.

Sadly you cannot open a thread in Travel in Nairaland without being bombarded with questions about how to get a visa even when you categorically state that the thread is NOT a visa thread.

Looking forward to reading about the rest of your experiences in Vietnam. Hope you are keeping safe with all the Covid wahala going on.

Tell them the truth are we not struggling.

Should I show you the employment statistics for Nigerians who have citizenship and their kids let alone the ones in refugee camps.

Go and see how some Nigerians are living large in Nigeria, you go bow.

Okay so show us the statistics. How the heck are Nigerians living large in Nigeria? We have to provide our own water, electricity and roads - things that are taken for granted in Ireland. Should we talk about the lack of good hospitals? Why do you think that everyone in government always run to London and USA when they fall ill?
Please let us not deceive ourselves here, we have a long way to go

sweetmelanin:
“Second Class Citizen”
Menial Jobs
This is very much dependant on your circle of friends/associates and immigration status. However, in my experience, the Nigerians I see around me are doing exceptionally well abroad – we are Business Analysts, Engineers, Scientists, Senior Social Workers, Occupational Health Therapists, Project Managers, Accountants, Solicitors, Pharmacists etc.. meaningful careers that pay well. Some of us here are real hustlers, getting certified and working contract jobs that fetch up to £450 per day (ask those Project Managers, IT technicians and Business Analysts). Therefore, the myth of menial jobs is very much outdated and perhaps only applicable to students or new immigrants in their first 1 – 3 years.
Feel free to add your points.

@sweetmelanin Oh my goodness! I could not have worded it any better than you did. Chop knuckle for keeping it real! Let us take the cost of housing for instance. If you want to buy a reasonable duplex in Lagos, you need to have at least 20 million Naira. Who has that kind of money? I am in my thirties living in the USA and before I hit 50 my house would be fully paid for as I took a 15 year mortgage. None of my peers owns a house in Nigeria as everybody is renting.
When I was in Nigeria, I tried to take a mortgage loan but the rates were absolutely ridiculous!

The only place I disagree with you is our assessment of menial jobs. There is ABSOLUTELY nothing wrong with doing menial jobs! Kudos to all the folks that do 'menial' jobs like wash dishes, clean toilets, serve food etcetera - you guys rock! Unfortunately we Nigerians are arrogant and somehow think that we are better than people that have 'lowly' jobs. Even if I am the MD of a company, I am no better than the cleaner.
To be honest, I used to have the whole 'menial' job mentality. But when I started college here in the States and saw some pretty fine oyibos sweeping my gym and washing dishes in the cafeteria my whole orientation changed. There is dignity in labor and if all you can get is a dish washing gig by all means do it!

Fisher007:
Wait.

What is your problem? I needed to ask you first of all?

Is that your age to get married is getting close?

Or because he is tall and physically built with HIV Gbola?

Or money? Cause you painted Blue Cabana dinner like one big romantic event? If you are financially stable as you claim that.shouldn't even woah you.

It is as if you were never courted or treated right all through your dating life ba?

Now answer to your problem:

Now I am amazed that the number one rule of relationship, which is trust was broken from the initial foundation. He didnt tell you off his HIV status.

Imagine you were infected, this will be another story.Without prior knowledge and he claimed you infected him. This will be another story.

Imagine it was the opposite situation, will the charming Prince accept your lying infected hiv ass. Put him in your situation.

You met a guy who is rich with HIV and a liar /cheat with anger management issues . All this red flags and you are still claiming love.

My sister wake up before them bury you with one of the red flags above. I would have talk sense to you if you were my sister. You are in lust and deep infatuation. You are in a smokescreen which until you are infected, it will clear out of your face. You are just not logical and rationale. You are too emotional and its shows pure immaturity in you.

What are your longtime expectation from this escapade because to me you are the only one who thinks it is a relationship

You will.marry.and have infected kids out of love for a violent, lying and cheating husband ba?

You are just vexing me tonight. May almighty vex you as you have vexed me tonight. Maybe then the smokescreen will clear from you eyes. Psssh

@Fisher007 My brother you said everything I wanted to say.

@Cassalinda Madam please don't be offended but what is wrong with you? Is this man the last man on earth?
The dude is HIV positive and he did NOT tell you his status before sleeping with you! Here in US the guy would have been locked up for a very long time for not revealing his HIV status. This guy is a psychopath plain and simple! To make matters worse he is a cheat and he has anger issues.

One would think that having HIV would have made him humble, but apparently he is still an insufferable cheating boor.
What would you have done if he gave you HIV?

Please remember that he is rich and can manage his health. What will you do if you get HIV and he leaves you? Do you think you can afford the ARV drugs? What will your family say? Do you really want to throw away your life because of some silly romantic fancies you have?

Be thankful to God that he has left you and make sure you block him on all social media platforms. This is indeed a true blessing in disguise. We have all suffered from broken hearts and it is not the end of the world. Patch up your heart and move on otherwise your next post in Nairaland will be how you irresponsibly got HIV from a lying cheat who left you after infecting you.
Good Luck!

Education / Re: Sex For Grades: UNILAG "Cold Room" Shut Down By School Management by sevule(m): 3:30pm On Oct 08, 2019
NwaAmaikpe:
shocked

Somewhere right now in UNILAG, a female student is upset with this BBC documentary. Scared that it has jeopardized her chances of graduating because lecturers will be scared of eating kpekus to pass her.

Coldroom or no coldroom,
Nigerian girls will willingly open kpekus to gain favours.
To think Mercy sucked Ike's preek in exchange for his coins in the BBNaija house shows how embedded this is in the mind of women.

The problem starts first with the female students.
If there are no bribe givers, there will be no bribes to take. Same thing with sex-for-grades.

You are truly foul and your cave man thinking is abominable. As for those that liked your ignorant comments one day your wife or daughter will tell you that she was forced to sleep with her boss/lecturer and maybe then you will know how it feels.

@NwaAmaikpe You have obviously never been outside of Nigeria so let me educate you. As a person in a position of power i.e a lecturer or boss you CANNOT have sex with your subordinate or student PLAIN and SIMPLE!!!!
Even if she begs for it, you CAN absolutely NOT do it! I know this concept is completely alien to your rather primitive way of thinking.
This whole "she begged for it" is truly becoming OLD.

My advice to you is to travel outside of Nigeria to see how life works in countries that have their acts together. While you are it, you might want to improve your English as well

So they BBC now is now the Social Media Judge of what Happens to so called Corrupt Lecturer's in Nigeria..

Fellow Nigerians this is not the way to go for our country...we should do the right thing and not allow so called external media houses from foreign
countries to dictate what happens in Nigeria in terms of Justice and Fairness in the Society...

I am SHOCKED that you are a lecturer when you espouse such arguments that makes absolutely no sense. With all what you have written, it is absolutely no surprise that our universities are in such a mess. BBC did an expose on the rot in the Nigerian university system and instead of condemning the lecturers you turn around and condemn BBC? Does this make any sense at all?
Why do you want to kill the messenger? Maybe it is because you are also one of those lecturers that demands for sex in exchange for good grades.

Exactly man. There is a big difference in someone trying to lure somebody into doing what is expected of him to do. If this investigators didn't meet the lecturers due to the issues they said they have, then i think this lecturers wont even notice them.

I will appreciate if a situation whereby a student who knows what she is doing and is so brilliant, is failed simply because a lecturer asked for her body and she said no. Most ladies go after this lecturers for the purpose of grades, without the lecturers asking them, but i am not saying some lectures too don't go for girls who they notice o. I have a female friend that even bragged with us then when i was school, saying her boyfriend is a lecturer, and truly they both got married after her program.

The lectures are doing a wrong thing, but here we need innocent girls who need nothing from this lectures. I know it is a duty of a lecturer to guide and council students, but why on earth will a prospective student associate herself with a lecturer for admission. We all know that to get an admission in Nigeria universities, one needs to write Jamb, and have good scores as well as a good WASSCE or NECO result. You went to meet a man in his Church because he is a lecturer, and asking him to help you get admission, is he the owner of the university? You came in with your problem and he tries to sleep with you because you yourself is corrupt and failed to follow the right process.
Even guys who help ladies with some pocket money also ask these ladies for sex.

Show us a lady who has followed the right process in school and or admission process and is abused in this course. This happens everywhere, even our politicians do worst than this to give jobs to ladies and even promote workers.
It is a pity that rape and sexual abuse is still happening so much in Nigeria when we have so many unattended issues that will soon cause so much environmental poverty.
Big brother has ended now, this white folks wants to engage the Nigeria youths with another distraction. Though this is a very serious issue to be trashed in Nigeria, but the approaches are wrong.

Thank you.

What the heck do you mean by the approach is wrong? Are you implying that BBC should not have come out with the documentary? YOU and people like you are what is WRONG with this jungle we call a country!!!
You see a lecturer that is clearly harassing a student sexually and somehow you try to make it her fault!! Then another clown on this thread is posting arrant nonsense about the slave trade in a thread about sexual harassment.
Your kind make me SICK!!!
For goodness sake when are we going to call a spade a spade? Have our morals degenerated to this extent where we do not even know what is wrong?

Travel / Re: Foreigners Sit On The Floor At The Airport In Lagos Due To Lack Of Seats by sevule(m): 9:03pm On Jan 15, 2019
This is shameful but hey it is Nigeria where anything goes. The problem with MMA is that there are NOT enough seats. Heck the floor looks filthy and looks like it has not been cleaned in a week.

The airport is old, dirty, stinks and looks like what you expect to see in a third world country. It is to our shame as Nigerians that we have an "international" airport that doesn't even have toilets. Yes, I know that there are 'toilets' in MMA but most of the toilets are broken and don't work and the ones that work are filthy. Let us not even talk about the lighting or lack of lighting in MMA. Equally shameful is the fact that MMA does NOT have a central cooling system and has to rely on fans.

The list of what is wrong in MMA is long and if I continue writing, I can write a book. As a Nigerian I am completely ashamed of the disgusting dilapidated structure we call an airport and if you are not ashamed of it, then I suggest you try and travel to other airports outside Nigeria

I am impressed!! You saved $7,000 in roughly 3 months, if that is not impressive I wonder what is.
If you don't mid I would like to give you some tips. Rather than save $120,000 have you thought about entering real estate?
Instead of paying a landlord $1,300 a month, you can buy your own house and start building equity. So basically you are paying yourself $1,300 a month.
Secondly and don't take this the wrong way but why are you paying for a new car? $500 every month for 8 years is a lot of money and I think you are better off driving a clean used car than paying for a new car. I drive a 2007 Hyundai which serves me well but I own my own house (mortgage). I honestly don't see the essence of a new car as it loses value immediately you drive it out of the lot

I have never had luck with jobs within 45 mins of my house, i drive 1hr, 1hr 30mins sometimes 2hrs due to traffic and that was killing. Working sundays when people are relaxed at home enjoying weekends.

I enjoyed my last job with a lot of benefits including flight i must say. Im not a salaried employee. If i show up at work on holidays, i get 2.5x of my regular pay and mehn thats a lot of money i must say but then, it offers no career advancements. I see peeps working for 9 years doing the same job with people that just got employed within few months.

Those at the office are people that worked 30yrs, 35 etc. That actually discoursged me..

Im still considering mortgage of a thing but not now...

My brother did you say that you do not want to get a mortgage now? Abeg rush go get mortgage oh! I bought a house 2 years ago and that was one of the best financial decisions I have ever made. My only regret was that i did not buy a multi family property (duplex, triplex or four plex). Right now I am looking to buy another house to rent out.
Look at it this way, the money you are paying for rent is going to your landlord. If you buy a house, that money goes to you and you build equity in the house. Don't dull yourself, get a mortgage ASAP!

The money is to finish up outstanding telecomm projects that will boost Nigerias sales and economy, if well utilized. Okonjo began this dream in 2015 under Goodluck Jonathan, Buhari is just following their steps.
There's more to telecommunications than china phone and NITEL network.

It is incredibly annoying when people who have NO idea what they are talking about call other people ignorant.

I worked in the Telecom industry for a while so since you apparently know more than us, What is Telecoms?

Which useless outstanding Telecoms projects are you talking about? Be specific and name the exact Telecoms projects the loan is to be used for or remain quiet.

This corrupt Buhari government is borrowing money to use for elections under the guise of telecoms. In case you have forgotten, the telecoms industry was privatised 10 year ago

madam we have read your husband's part of the story and I will advice you to handle this issue with wisdom (a very high percentage of it).Firstly, rule out divorce from it as he also clearly stated he won't want that. Now the ball is in your court,he's obviously a good man and you confirm that too,you kind of bruised his ego with your words and actions, you should also be aware that as a man and from your different backgrounds, you should treat and handle him with wisdom often, you can own something and still assume he's the owner and let him boss over it( there are things you can't totally change about a man),give him some sense of pride, give am small ego chop.we lived in my mums house for ten years and believe me no one ever knew till my dad got his(not even us d kids bak den)my dad had the controls, you could have just waved it off when he said you should pack out kos u knew too he didn't really mean it,never take words said out of anger serious till d person takes some practical moves. Can't you just meet him privately and beg him, tell him you will change d name to his alone to calm his nerves and I bet u he will tell u no need for DAT and u both can include ur names kos he's not a wicked man as u also confirm, then u settle d rest in za ozza room. After all dis, tell family members to calm nerves and maintain their space as u av taken charge of ur home and DAT u chose peace instead of fight. As a mother there are things you must sacrifice for the sake of ur children. pls b wise in ur dealings, don't break your home by yourself.peace.

What kind of CRAPPY advice is this? Why don't you just come out and tell the woman to be a door mat? She should beg to keep her husband, beg him to take the house, BEG, BEG, BEG. With this kind of advice she will still be begging him when he is taking a second wife.

HEseesall:

@HEseesall I am glad that you are trying to compromise and you offered to change ownership of the house to you and your husband. Marriage is all about compromise and you have taken the first step. However DO NOT and I repeat DO NOT change ownership of the house to your husband's name alone!!

Your husband already told you to pack out of the house when he thought that the house was in your name. Imagine what he will do when the house is actually in his name! I am also a father and I can't fathom how a man would leave his wife and children just because of an argument. Try your best to reconcile with your husband, but REMEMBER YOU HAVE TO LOOK OUT FOR YOURSELF AND YOUR KIDS FIRST!

Women are the backbone of the family, they make or mar the home, since they help bring life to the world suffice it to say they sum up what we call family, 99% of successful, longlasting home or family is the ability of the woman to hold the "forte".
My attention was drawn to this forum and this topic https://www.nairaland.com/4617351/husbands-pride-wants-ruin-home#69371294 and it is sad that most people drew conclusion on a one sided story though i wouldnt blame those involved because they judged based on what was said and the individual involved needed public validation for her wrong doing, a public display i dont approve of but since external persons and relations are already involved i'd like to clear some details.
.

@ExtraExtra Brother let us not beat about the bush, you are CLEARLY in the wrong here! You admitted that you used your share of the proceeds to treat your father and your wife used hers to buy the property and you helped her finish it off. Please be honest - who owns the property? It clearly belongs to your wife. The fact that you helped her finish the property does NOT make the property your own! And for goodness sake how can you be so SELFISH and demand that she signs off the property to you and to only you? What kind of a man are you? You are just being a bully who is using his wife's love for him to control her.

My brother please do not insult our intelligence and say that you were joking when you told her to pack out of the house. No married man jokes about a thing like that especially when he is angry as you obviously were. How will you feel if your wife told you she slept with your best friend and later said she was joking?

Your wife obviously knows you very well and that is why she put the house in her name. Obviously if the house was not in her name, right now she would have been out on the streets after being kicked out by you! What I see here is a case of ego. You were shocked that your wife outplayed you hence you decided to separate from her over a non issue.

Your wife was very wrong to insult your family and you were wrong to ask her to pack out of the house. Do not let your pride be your undoing. Be the man in the relationship and reconcile with your wife. You and your wife definitely have a lot of issues to work out and I recommend you see a counselor or pastor.

This story should be a lesson to women out there. Shine your eyes!

Double tragedy!!!!.LMAO!!!...Nigeria loosing and one idiot calling me out for busting their bubble.wtf...like seriously....I think I may have to go personal on this one now.
who is this hell of a guy trying to claim hero of Wakanda by calling me out with insult??.the load big pass you to carry.
Am sure you lack ability to comprehend simple english and I CHALLENGE you to quote or point out where I compared or rated Nigeria better than that of America in all my posts here or is it because I called you and your likes out who live a miserable fake, debt ridden with govt support lifestyles and come here to compare America to heaven where there's no sickness or death?.mine is to balance and counter your exaggerations where possible.it's obvious you were drunk when written this rebuttal.
So police stopping you abroad is "obeying constituted authority" but your likes call it a crime against humanity if same thing happens in nigeria.this is the height of hypocrisy.
Moreso, kindly show me in the statutes book where police can pull you over in traffic even when no traffic violations were committed.or are you too busy with your low paying jobs that you hadly pay attentoon to series of racial profiling happening every day here?,then it shows how dumb and stupid you are.
Yes,I am an African American for a reason, reason definitely different from yours and dont think all Nigerians are as poor as you and your likes who can't afford a dishwasher but instead slaving their destiny away abroad for.
Don't know why people won't mind their own business and respect individual decisions based on their realities.

You spew insults and hatred because I rightly called you out. You resort to insults because you have nothing concrete to say. I will not follow you down that road but I will stick to the facts. It is strange that you see yourself as an African American but yet you champion Nigeria's cause. Which one are you, Nigerian or African American? I am proudly Nigerian and will never identify as African American because that is not who I am. You have already lost your Nigerian identity by identifying as African American so your arguments are moot.

Moreso, kindly show me in the statutes book where police can pull you over in traffic even when no traffic violations were committed
You will do yourself a favor to consult an actual lawyer and not get your facts about law from TV shows. A cop is allowed to pull you over for 'reasonable suspicion' even when no traffic violations were committed. A cop however has no right to search your car without a warrant but he can pull you over.

So police stopping you abroad is "obeying constituted authority" but your likes call it a crime against humanity if same thing happens in nigeria.
When I am in Nigeria, I have absolutely no problems stopping for a policeman. I do have problems with a policeman asking me for a bribe and I stated as much if you bothered to read my post before rushing to insult me. Also I have a problem with a policeman searching my phone and laptop without a court order because it is illegal.

If you answer this post please be an adult and respond without insults.

Now,when someone talk about how some RNs make $80k and above, have enough savings, buy houses and how they make over $400 as a cab driver over the weekend and the "how many" theory;(how many can buy a car in Nigeria, yet they drive around on car notes, how many can buy a house in Nigeria yet they are on mortgages and how many can save N30m in Nigeria yet they can't boast of $10k in their own personal account.),they even claim money is not everything .I laugh so hard at their hypocrisy and self deceptions....so finally and finally speaking it's all about the MONEY...hahaha...it's no longer about the sane society, the security, the system that works, the good infrastructures,no police harassment etc...hmmmm,I was taught there's reward in honestly, why can't these people be sincere enough to admit they took the plunge for economic reasons??.if the forex situations is like $1=N1,would they have made the move??.,

P.S.... I was pulled over earlier today by the cops only to ask for my ID and who owns the car I was driving ,I equally asked if he would like to know who owns the blazer i was on.I guess my offense was that an African man was seen driving a convertible.if that is not intimidation and racially induced discrimination, then the likes of op and co should educate me.

People like you are one of the reasons that Nigeria is the unwholesome mess that it currently is! How can Nigeria change if we keep insisting that Nigeria is heaven on earth?

With reference to the bolded part of your post, you are indeed hypocritical and entitled. You are screaming racial discrimination because a cop only asked you for your ID, then to make matters worse you gave him attitude. Why didn't you just give him the ID? Are you aware that cops also stop white people to ask for their IDs? Weren't you taught basic respect as a child? Or is it because you are in the States that you think you should not respect authority?

For heavens sake if you go to Nigeria and drive in Lagos you will be stopped by police at least once a week. Will you call that discrimination? Even worse when you are stopped by Nigerian police, they will demand for bribe. Has any American cop ever asked for a bribe when he stopped you?

Last time I was in Nigeria, Ojuelegba bus stop to be specific I was stopped by a cop because I was carrying my backpack!! He then demanded to see my phone and the contents of my laptop. I told him he had no right to search my laptop as he had no search warrant. Has any American cop EVER stopped you on the road and demanded to see your laptop??

My advice to you is to be thankful for where you are and stop this inane pissing contest about whether Nigeria is better than America. I love my country but the honest truth is Nigeria is a jungle where nothing works. My prayer is that this would change in our lifetime. However pretending that Nigeria is an awesome country is NOT the way to bring about the change that the country DESPERATELY needs!

Springdance:
In the spirit of giving back:

Total was $8609

I did not do new born hearing test. The lady said it was mandatory, I told her to give me sometime and she should come back cos I didn’t do it for my previous baby and it wasn’t a big deal. I went online and saw it was not mandatory for self pay patients and gladly declined. By God’s grace my child can hear, thank you very much and I don’t need the service.

Did visa on arrival and they refused to collect my money when I got to Lagos, I had $190 but it was in $20’s, they said they don’t collect small denominations, they also refused my Naija domicilliary bank card, that they only accept foreign card. It was a big wawu, I had to go to the bureau de change in the airport and pleaded with the lady to change my money to $100, $50 and two $20’s. They collected it. It is faster if you pay on their website and come with proof of payment cos it was a long wait for us that were just making payments.

Every bill payed. Thanks to all who contribute to this site, I learnt everything here.

Thank God for his infinite mercies, mother and baby are doing well and are back home. It is all by the grace of God.

I was shocked that you paid $8,609 for a C-Section. My wife just gave birth via C-Section and the total bill was approximately $46,000. However since I have health insurance, I only paid $1,000 out of pocket, and the rest was covered by insurance.

The American Health system is truly a strange one!

When you see stories like this, how can anyone possibly wonder why people are leaving Nigeria in droves? The very people that make laws for Nigeria are stealing the country blind and we are talking about sacrifice??
How the heck can Nigeria EVER develop when all 3 arms of government are made up of criminals?? They rape and pillage the country and they do not even leave crumbs for the masses.

The saddest part of the story is that instead of stoning these vagrants that call themselves senators and government officials, we applaud them. Some people on this thread are even justifying these thieving senators!

Our senators both Igbo, Yoruba, Hausa and other tribes are UNITED in stealing from Nigeria but yet we will come on Nairaland and call ourselves derogatory names like afonja, flat head etc!! We are indeed our own WORST enemies

I do not curse my country but Nigeria will NEVER develop as LONG as these criminals remain in power.

Load up on coupons

In the States there are coupons for almost everything you can buy in a supermarket. Its almost as if there is a competition to give out coupons as businesses, restaurants, shops etc give out coupons that reduce the prices of their goods and services. If you have a mailing address you will get a ton of coupons and you can also get coupons online. Some of the coupons have offers like - Spend $30 get $10 off, Buy one get One Free, Pay for a meal get an appetizer free etcetera.

If you are going grocery shopping it is a good idea to take some coupons for things you want to buy. Basically when I am buying non perishables, I wait till when there is either a sale or coupon before buying and this cuts the cost of my groceries. There is a popular show that shows how some folks do what is called extreme couponing. Basically they combine a lot of coupons to buy groceries for almost free. There are some apps that also let you use coupons to pay for stuff, a good example is the Target Cartwheel app.

There is free stuff everywhere, you just have to look

The amount of free stuff in this country is amazing!!! As a Naija boy I do not pay money for things I can get for free. One good example is Craigslist. If you go to the free section of Craigslist, you will be amazed what people are giving away for free. People give away furniture, tvs, electronics, clothes you name it. Because America is so rich, people buy stuff, get tired of it and then give it away. I have definitely gotten my fair share of free stuff from Craigslist. The fact that it is free doesn't mean you can't be picky though! If you don't like it don't take it. If you are looking to furnish an apartment, you should definitely check out free furniture on Craigslist first before paying for stuff you could have gotten for free.

There are so many other things that are free. You can rent movies and books for free at the library. If you don't have a PC, you can use the PCs at the library for free, internet there is also free and very fast. If you are going to a restaurant and it is your birthday, tell them and they will probably give you a dessert for free. Talking about birthdays, there are lierally hundreds of stores that will give you free stuff on your birthday and all you have to do is sign up for emails. Restaurants give out coupons for buy one meal get one free. This is not limited to restaurants as grocery stores sometimes offer buy one get one free. Sometimes I complete surveys online and get free stuff.

When my wife was pregnant I went to check my maibox and there were 3 cans of free baby food from Similac waiting for me! How they knew she was pregnant is beyond me but who am I to reject free food? Whenever I go to Costco, they always offer free food samples and I always help them offload their samples into my stomach. In my mind I am like this can never work in Nigeria because people will bring their whole families to eat lunch from the free samples. The long and short is that there is free stuff everywhere, you just have to know where to look.

Craigslist and Ebay are your friends

Everybody knows Amazon is the number one online shopping site but people tend to forget about EBay. Generally when I want to buy something expensive, I check what the price is on Amazon and Ebay. Some things are cheaper on Ebay and some things are cheaper on Amazon, so it is good to check both sites. I have a ton of designer clothing on Ebay because it tends to be much cheaper on Ebay than Amazon. Also if oyu are looking at buying used electronics like phones, Ebay is the number one choice not Amazon. However there are some shady sellers on Ebay so always make sure you only buy products from sellers that accept returns. I once bought a Chinese Note 4 that an unscrupulous seller tried to pass off as the original thing. When I discovered the phone was fake, I quickly informed Ebay and they forced the seller to refund my money.

Craigslist is another hidden gem that most people do not use. Many Nigerians tend to use Craigslist only when they want to but cars but you can buy virtually anything on Craigslist. The great thing about Craigslist is that you can haggle and as a Naija boy I no dey carry last for that side. I have bought high end furniture(I love well made furniture) worth thousands of dollars for a few hundreds.

Not only can you buy stuff, you can even get a short term job on Craigslist. If you are looking to earn some money and you have time on your hands, you can get "sharp sharp" jobs on Craigslist.

However if you are buying stuff from Craigslist, MAKE sure you do your due diligence!! Some people are psychopaths so never trust anybody from Craigslist! Try and meet in a public place if possible and if you have to go to a person's house, make sure you go with someone who will wait outside for you.

Shop at discount stores, warehouse clubs and outlet stores

I could probably write a whole thread on getting stuff at highly discounted prices in stores. Coming from Nigeria where I learned to haggle in open markets, the mindset of getting a good deal stuck with me. The great thing about America is that even though you generally don't haggle, you can get amazing discounts if you only know how and when to buy. I used to think that Walmart was one of the cheapest places to buy groceries, clothes etcetera, boy was I mistaken!! Here are some tips I learned

1. One of the cheapest stores for groceries in the USA is Aldi not Walmart. If you have an Aldi near where you live, do yourself a favor and pay them a visit. You will be amazed at their prices.

2. If you have a family you will get massive savings by joining a warehouse club. A warehouse club is basically a store that sell bulk items cheaper than regular stores. I tend to favor Costco over Sams Club because they have a much better selection of products. Not only is food cheaper, but electronics, gas(fuel), drugs and alcohol is also cheaper at warehouse clubs.

3. Outlet stores are stores that sell things like electronics, furniture, designer clothing, furniture etc at discounted prices. If oyu are looking to buy any of these things, you might want to check an outlet store first

Emergency Relationship Counselor- by Pius Adesanmi

You read stories like this one shared by the prof and just stare gloomily ahead

I am shocked that someone that calls himself a professor would attempt to weave a bunch of lies and half truths in an attempt to support his spurious assertion that life in Nigeria/Ghana is better than life in America. We all know that it is a lie so let us not deceive ourselves.

You see this Samsung S8+ you are wielding? It's about one thousand dollars. Over there, we cannot afford the phones you guys use here. We sign three-year contracts for the phones you just buy like bread here. He paid off this phone to bring it home to you. It's on his credit card. He is still paying for it monthly in America. It will take him three years to pay it off.
The bolded is an outright LIE! How many Nigerians in Nigeria can afford to pay 320,000 for a Galaxy S9? A Galaxy S9 costs roughly $900 and even a person working a low income job in Walmart earning say $2000 can afford to buy one. Let us do the math, For a Nigerian living in Nigeria to be able to afford a Galaxy S9, he should earn at least 640,000 monthly. Please how many people do you know earn 640,000 a month? If you are going to lie please don't make it an obvious lie.

You see this Samsung S6 I am using? I signed a three-year contract on it two years ago. I am still paying. Yet, here you are using Samsung S8+. By the time I am able to upgrade to Samsung S8 in Canada, you people in Africa will be using Samsung S12 and still expecting your people in the diaspora to fund that lifestyle
You should be thankful that you can spread the cost of a brand new premium phone over the span of 3 years rather than being ungrateful. How many folks in Nigeria can spread the cost of a phone over the period of even a year? Which would you rather do, pay for the phone at once or pay over a span of 3 years? Besides it is not by force to use the latest Samsung phones. If you can't afford it, for heavens sake there are OTHER affordable phones you can buy. CUT YOUR COAT ACCORDING TO YOUR CLOTH!

In summary what I see is a man that is not financially responsible and is buying things he cannot afford all in a desire to please people. If you are NOT financially responsible in Nigeria, you would not be financially responsible in America

Learn to make appointments for everything

Coming to America I quickly learned that I had to make an appointment for almost everything. This was a difficult adjustment for me as I was used to the Naija style of getting services by just walking in but it doesn't work that way here. You want to see the doctor? Make an appointment. You want a haircut? Make an appointment. You want to change the oil in your car? Make an appointment, and it just goes on and on. There are exceptions and sometimes you can get service without making an appointment but the problem is that you may have to wait a very long time for them to attend to people that booked appointments, so the moral of the story is - make an appointment.

This Saturday I wanted to change the oil in my car and I forgot to make an appointment. I called like 6 different car shops and all the car shops told me they were fully booked and they couldn't attend to me. You would think that I should have known better having lived in America for a while but sometimes the Naija boy in me is just too strong.
