harakiri:

Thank you very much. Some of the people commenting here are either not in touch with reality or telling outright lies. There are some talking about how good they treat their househelps but i'm pretty sure those househelps would have a different story to tell if they were to say their piece.

At a time while growing up in my own home under my parents, I would not have had pleasant things to say about how my own mother was treating me.

I wonder how many of us working under an organised establishment have all good things to say about our employers, are we not always complaining about one thing or the other that make us perceive that our employers dont care about us?
Family / Re: Why Do Some People Maltreat Their Househelps? by Shinatu: 8:46am On May 15, 2012
maasoap: since she's likely to spend many years under your roof as long as you people do not get tired of each other, what are you doing to make her life or future better? Because you were silent on that aspect.

@maasoap

I did not set out to write an epistle on my plans for my house maid.I only wanted to quickly drop my support for moremi2008's stand that many people still treat their house maid fairly. I am puzzled at the tone of your statement on 'my silence' is it really hard to believe that some employers of labour (house maids) can be reasonable?

Anyway, my housemaid is an adult and gets paid, her salary is not constant because mine is not constant too, it gets reviewed. She shall also get a factor of her salary depending on the number of years spent when she is ready to leave (this is the agreed, there could be other 'jara')I have engaged her on what she would like to do to secure her future, she has told me her plans and I give my counsell as far as I can give, I have learnt that counsell is a significant thing lacking in the lives of these young ladies and many of them see you as a nuisance when you insist on it.

moremi2008:

That's not how most househelps are treated. It might seem like a free-for-all situation but there are actually in-built checks and balances. First, it's hard to find a good househelp and most people that hire them tend to treat them fairly well. Second, if you treat a househelp badly, she will most likely run away. Three, the middleman that matches househelps with families will NOT work with you again if you treat one of the helps badly. Having said this, there are always exceptions, especially when the househelp has nobody to look out for his/her interests.

Almost every family I know back home have househelps and they are treated very well. My family is an example; we have always had househelps and they are paid and treated very well. Ditto for all the other families I know. The ones currently helping my mum earn 15k a month and they get free lodging, food and clothes (they also spend half the day sleeping and getting very fat).

@Moremi2008
I am surprised that you got this right despite the fact that you do not live in Nigeria( the first paragraph of your post). Many Nigerians in the diaspora get it all wrong, the only thing they know about house maids is what they remember from their childhood i.e how their mothers treated their housemaids. I do not treat my house maid badly (she is 19years old), she goes with us to every family special outing (be it by air or by road)and sits on the same table with us eating what we eat, does she wear the same quality of chlothes my children wear? No or does she have all that my children have ? No

I should not be seen as 'different', because I am not I am surrounded by people who treat their house maids the same way, if not better!

Good and straight to the point. I am glad for you. Your experience is refreshing and i am proud of you as a nigerian in SA.
A point i want to establish, Southy is a land of opportunity. A green country wit boundless wits. The truth is all these are for those who prepared their coming wit enof money and sought-for skills.
The fact abounds that well over 70% of naijas here were not ready b4 coming here, just go to d asylums offices today and u will know what i am talking about.

Please what are these sought-for skills and what type of visa would one apply for if one has one of those skills to be able to function in SA?

if you can show evidence that you can pay for your medical bills, they should, besides a preg test will be carried out so don't think not telling them is an option. most people i knw usually have visa's before the get preg, like get a year or 2 multiple visa, so when preg u don't need go to the embassy. After child birth, keep all your receipts well, it will be required of you at point of exit from the US. if you alone apply for a visa, you will be granted cos your family is back home, the whole family wanting to leave will raise a red flag! but seriously, dos guys at the embassy are so unpredictable, depends on the person interviewing you. all the best
[b][quote author=doxat]

Really? I have never heard of anyone being asked to present her receipts at the point of exit.

mcbertin: I have read all the comments with keen intrest and wants to seek opinion of someone who has gone through this before. I have plans of traveling to US with my husband and my 2year old baby. I also plan to have baby in US and yet to get a visa, is it beeter to tell the consulate officer in Nigeria that we are going on a family vacation or that I am going to have a baby in US.

Candid opinion pls!

Do not say you are going to have the baby in the US if you are not requesting for a medical Visa.

All of you could be be given a visiting visa if you can prove that you have strong ties with Nigeria e.g you or your husband work in a very good company.(someone mentioned in an earlier post that his family was denied despite the fact that he works in an oil company!)

Sometimes these things are not black or white, a pregnant colleague of mine was denied while another one was given despite her 'yes' answer to the pregancy question, the interviewer looked at her bank account and said she could afford to have the baby in the US if she wanted to.that was in Abuja.

As someone mentioned , it is better to go apply for the visa before getting pregnant.

lonxo: I intend traveling ending of the month to have my baby in Chicago. Can anyone recommend an affordable child birth centre/hospital in chicago to me.
Also how do i transport my cash there. Can USD Visa card obtained in Nigeria work for me there? Or do i physicall travel with 15k USD(bearing in mind AML policy)?Kindly advise. Many thanks

I made use of the First Bank naira master card to pay my bills in the US some time last year, the nice thing is that the card is tied to a normal naira current accout. the only problems encountered was that of Network failure once or twice while shopping. You can ask other banks with more reliable networks if they have the same product.

If you take this route, please take some spare cash along, maybe about $1K

AjanleKoko: I think most people didn't get my point. Only this fella with the censored name did: grin

My point is, people assume that starting your own business is a guarantee to wealth and success. It's not. Whether you are in paid employment or starting your own business, the goal should be financial independence. Make solid investments, even as an employee, and one day you will not need to work again.

I have this friend who worked in Shell for ten years, and one day realized he was worth about $1m in investments and holdings, even as an employee. In the 10 years, he sunk his money into property, stocks, various securities, an annuity, and various other investments that did not necessarily require day to day management.
So, guess what he did? He quit. Nowadays, he lives on his own time, speculates on this and that, does business or consulting that catches his fancy, and is not under any pressure. He's no Jay Z, but he can afford vacations anytime, sends his kids to good schools, and generally lives a comfortable life.

Weeeeell,1M per month for 10 years is 120M(principal), Assuming that was his average income and he did not spend any part of it or if his salary was more but came to 1M after the usual family expenses.

Maybe he was employed as a senior person and became a manager along the way so his salary was much higher, but the thing is these guys hardly leave when they get that far because then it starts to get interesting!

Politics / Re: Chevron Report That An Oil Rig Caught Fire Near Niger Delta by Shinatu: 8:45am On Jan 17, 2012
Vavavoom:

There's enough blame to go round The One - from drilling contractor to operator to hired & owned equipment plus personnel on the job. I could build my own theory based on while-I-was-there experience and it won't be far from that carried out by an unbaised investigator but in all the buck stops with Chevron as overall supervisor to make informed judgement based on feedback got from service personnel and drilling contractor in line with acceptable drilling practices as spelt out by Chevron prior to job commencement.  The Blow out didn't just happen. It occured in series as unscheduled events culminating in the fatal disaster at the end, there were pointers but as with humans we carry on thinking we can get through before suituations get out of hand.

Here's a cue, an installed BOP is about one of the last lines and most effective means deployed to combat fluid kick. From what we know it didn't shut out the fatal kick. The question is why? Failure to deploy in time because of human error( panic station) from ground feed. It is the most reason why the OIM didn't make it out alive from sources on ground. He raced to the other side when human instinct prevailed otherwise, seeing from his office opposite the rig floor I can picture him blaring out the abandon vessel signal for others to escape while he raced down to try and halt the almost out of control event. I could picture the overwhelmed driller, the fear evident on his face, such hoplessness. Such frailty. On the brink of life and death is such tiny margin of separation. I did share brief moments with both men - worthy men I would say. But the error didnt start with the BOP, it started after we took the first mild kick. Basic instinct kicked in. Control the well first, off course  with every kick nobody had an inkling of how big it would get, but when the BHT( bottom hole temperature) started rising, a phase change was on the way, pump seals began melting, pumps went offline and came back on, all the while gas seppages building while men toiled for days in guise of primary well control. Mud weights was reviewed and weighed in between. But intermittent failures of the pumps was the cue for departure that wasn't heralded. The primary line of defence was gone, and while men dreamt in their sleep few were to wake to an accustomed sound of abandon ship. The heroes stayed just one last time to save their Endeavor but their fate was sealed and time stopped for them.  Tonight I go to sleep with their faces in my dream. Beautiful men I hope to wor
k with in the afterlife.

This is enough recipe for a disaster! on a gas accumulation for that matter.

Politics / Re: Militants Threatening Us – Pengassan by Shinatu: 3:20pm On Jan 14, 2012
I believe it will be an illegal act for Pengassan to shut down oil facilities, what they are allowed to do is to ask their members operating these facilities to leave .They know this will not give them what they want because members of staff of the oil company who are not members of Pengassan will simply take over.

justwise:

Ok, in that case renewing it in Nigeria is the better option, visa renewer is like first application, the only advantage now is that you have immigration history, you either use IV or make hotel reservation

I have never had to use any for my US NIV(Non immigrant visa) renewal. Anyway the embassy says they do not have specific requirement for documents to be presented, just to be prepared with those that will show your readiness to come back home.

You can use the visa renewal (drop box) facility up to a year after the expiration of your current visa, so if you are not in a hurry to get back to the US you have a whole year in Nigeria to renew that visa

BABE!:

Ait. Fair enough. Some folks still believe that a woman without a man is incomplete; the only purpose of humans is to get married and procreate; and a ton of other primitive and archaic ideas.

That being said, we are in the age of "do whatever you wanna do--middle finger to the society".  grin If you're happy living a marriage-less life; Great! If you're unhappy without a man, get married (if that would solve your problem). If you've found love and wish to get married. Sweet! Just do you.

You cannot be happy living a marriageless life in Nigeria, you will be reminded of how miserable you must be everywhere you go. You shall always be regarded as someone with a huuuuuuge problem no matter how comfortable you initially feel with your situation, at the end you may start to feel exactly the way you are addressed.

It is a sad thing in my opinion  as it does not make young men to develop in character, because everybody knows that no matter how ill mannered a guy is, there will be a gal ready to marry him even if it is just to get out of spinsterhood, then the struggle begins
