. Claremont, I doubt you understand the kind of racism that goes on in the professional sphere in Europe. We had this argument with a colleague also. I applied for internship positions with my CV (same format, just different names, emails and phone numbers). I received 29 rejections in a space of 4 days while all 30 scheduled an interview with the one with the German name.

I am in Germany and it is pretty much the same. Thousands of Africans here even with German Masters & PhDs working low level cleaning and physical logistics jobs. I mean, seeing those who have been settled here for more than 20-30 years looking so haggardly is enough to discourage my continued residence in Europe.

Good morning all please a cousin of mine needs help from London. She attended her university there about 10 years ago and started working. But recently when they supposed to issue her papers they did not so she went to court and won the case but her lawyer was a swindler. She was given the option for getting her resident paper or getting her damages fees she opted for her papers but the lawyer insisted in both. The lawyer submitted his own account number requesting the government to pay him directly instead of my cousin. After so many arguments with the lawyer we advised her to allow the lawyer submit his account number hence what she needed is her papers. Now she was expecting a letter deliverying her resident papers but got a letter of denial. Now she is not aware if the lawyer has received alert and refused to inform her. She informed the lawyer of the letter of denial but all the lawyer could do was to request 1k pounds to reappeal the government decision. Please body with contact of human rights lawyers in London that can assist her? Useful advice please.

I think pro China nairalanders are the hypocrites here....
China has been restricting every American tech giant from doing business in mainland China....
China banned Google, netflix, Twitter, youtube, whatsapp, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat for whatever reasons...
They even banned wikipedia and quora....
Restricted business for Amazon and Microsoft...
China allowed android on smartphones but banned Google playstore, thus Google wasn't making money from it's own very product despite its widespread use in china....
The moment China develops it's own processors/chips, that will be end of Qualcomm and Intels' market share in china....
The only reason China allowed Apple it's market access is simply because 99 percent of Apple devices are manufactured in China....
If Apple was manufactured elsewhere, china would have shut their market against it...
This measure of blocking foreign tech companies allowed for the emergence of Chinese giant tech companies like baidu, tencent, jd.com and wechat....
And the pro China social media crew hailed it as a smart move....
So I really don't understand what the noise is all about if USA decides to block/reduce huwaei market share so as to allow usa companies catch up with 5G technology....
USA learnt the bad practice from China....
USA is playing the game of global trade with Chinese characteristics....

HealthNHS Nurse Who Offered Bible To A Cancer Patient 'rightly Sacked' says court by SIRTee15(op): 9:42am On May 22, 2019
A nurse who offered a bible to a cancer patient and encouraged him to sing The Lord is My Shepherd was fairly dismissed, a court has ruled.

Sarah Kuteh was given the sack from her job at Darent Valley Hospital in Dartford, Kent, in 2016 for repeatedly talking to patients about her faith and handing out a bible, in breach of Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) rules.

A ruling, published last week by the Court of Appeal, stated that on June 3 2016 a patient at the hospital had complained about Ms Kuteh's conduct.

The court heard how the patient likened the incident to a 'Monty Python skit', which he said was 'very bizarre' - in which she encouraged him to sing along with Psalm 23 with her.

The ruling, which upheld a decision that she was fairly dismissed by the Dartford and Gravesham NHS Trust, stated: "On 20 June 2016, the Complaints Department noted a call from a patient being treated for cancer concerning his assessment by the Claimant on 3 June 2016.

"He had replied "open minded" to the question on the form concerning religion and alleged the Claimant had told him that the only way he could get to the Lord was through Jesus.

"(She) told him she would give him her bible if he did not have one; gripped his hand tightly and said a prayer that was very intense and went "on and on"; and asked him to sing Psalm 23 [The Lord is My Shepherd] after which he was so astounded that he had sung the first verse with her.

"He described the encounter as 'very bizarre' and 'like a Monty Python skit'.

The court documents also point to a number of other incidents, in which Ms Kuteh told a bowel cancer patient in April 2016 'that if he prayed to God he would have a better chance of survival'

Another complaint, again in April 2016, came from a patient who said Ms Kuteh 'spent more time talking about religion than doing the assessment', and another, the same month, came from a patient who said they didn't want to see Ms Koteh as they 'didn't like preaching'.

Miss Kuteh, a 50-year-old mum of three, was suspended from her job in June 2016 and sacked for gross misconduct in August the same year, with her dismissal upheld by an employment tribunal later the same year.

She appealed the ruling of the tribunal in 2017, but failed in her bid to have her sacking overturned, but was allowed to work as a nurse again in July last year after her working restrictions were lifted by the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

Ms Kuteh, however, appealed for a second time against her sacking to the Court of Appeal - saying the employment tribunal had 'failed to consider the correct interpretation of the NMC Code and the distinction between appropriate and inappropriate expressions of religious beliefs'.

She also said the tribunal had failed to acknowledge that Article 9 of the European Convention on Human Rights - Freedom to manifest one's religion or beliefs - was 'applicable' and to 'consider the fact-sensitive distinction between true evangelism and improper proselytism'.

Judges at the Court of Appeal, however, rejected the nurse's most recent appeal, saying she was not unfairly dismissed in a ruling published last week.

The Christian Legal Centre - which represents Ms Kuteh - said she is currently in discussion with her legal team to consider her next step.

PoliticsRe: Middle Class In Nigeria- Is It Still In Existence? by SIRTee15: 1:47pm On May 03, 2019
abnot:
I believe there is an expanding middle class in Nigeria . Most of the young people you find living in VGC, Lekki , Oniru and agungi are in the middle class. I could afford all these things you’ve mentioned even when I was a youth corp member with short term contract positions here and there. I maintained irokoTv and Netflix subscriptions, I ate out at least once a day , partied almost every weekend, watched soccer at lounges and went on vacation about twice annually. By the time I started working full time I had been to most of the cities in Europe which was probably one of the cultures in learnt in the west (vacation every now and then). I also had a car before I started working in naij. But I never had 10 million naira in my account or owned a house . I believe I was already in the middle class (by Nigerian standard ) as a youth corp member with temporary freelancing jobs here and there. One of the contributors even went as far as classifying Dangote as a potential middle class in west lol . Africa’s wealthiest capitalist cannot be a middle class citizen anywhere in the world . I’ve found it easier to save money and still live well in Nigeria than USA. Nigeria is cheap and I don’t need as much money as an American will need to live decently due to variation in cost of living in both societies. The American culture has got its citizens more individualistic than most Africans . Consequently Americans tend to spend on themselves and only themselves . Most American kids have their college education funded via financial aids even if their parents could afford it. On the other hand Nigerians ( both middle and upper class)?spend a substantial amount of their income giving out to relatives, friends, church or hosting one event or the other. Difference in culture explains that not the absence of middle class . No society lacks a middle class .
I really don't what u driving at by your individualistic comparison....
How many Nigerians live in VI or ikoyi....
how many Nigerians can afford a 4.5m naira rent......
Those houses in lekki resemble where an average Nigerians live.....

Middle class simply mean the lifestyle of an average citizen in a country....

It doesn't matter if the mortgage in developed countries is 200 thousand dollars, the question is can an average citizen afford the mortgage...
5 or 6 years instalmental payment plan for a car is irrelevant so long as the average citizen can afford to take the plan and own a car...

The ability to afford the basic necessities and comfort of life is the definition of middle class....
Luxurious lifestyle is for the upper class....

Middle class has very little to do with income or wages because purchasing parity n cost of living differs in every country...
Moreover economic system differs btw developed n developing....

The koko is what can your average citizen afford within the economic system available to them....

In nigeria, what's the worth of an average citizen in comparison to cost of living- that's the question on this thread, not some baseless comparison with middle class abroad....
For a country to boast of a viable middle class, at least 50-60% of its working population must be in the group....
In Nigeria, it's the lower class n the poverty class that's swelling at an alarming rate......

What's happening right now in nigeria is simple....
Only the upper class seems to be enjoying the country while the thinning middle class are relocating to Canada.....
Professionals n civil servants who constitute the bulk of middle class in nigeria are not finding it funny due to irregular salary payment by employers....

Bragging about upper class is useless...
every country, no matter how poor has upper class...

The funny thing is u even comparing the upper class in nigeria to middle class in America....
Upon all the noise n the oil wealth, the Nigerian upper class in nigeria is not even up 50 thousand compared to 14 million in the USA....

Abeg make we dey reason am o....
Nigeria is more than lekki and maitama....
Nigeria is not easy at all despite crude oil at 70 dollars per barrel...
Only God knows what will happen when crude oil inevitably becomes useless.....

Guy stop talking nonsense

Consultants are not the same as board members .
You are the one clucthing at straws .

You said consultants RUN the NHS

Then you show a link to Non-Executive directors as evidence.

Do you know what a non-executive director is

??

They do NOT RUN anything

and importantly they do NOT perform ANY CONSULTING whatsoever as in ZERO in a Non-executive capacity

Finally the NHS is not one entity.

It is literally DOZENS of Trusts, Dozens of boards so posting a link of one board tells us littlee about THE NHS and what you posted does not buttress your absurd claim that consultans Healthcare, which is what was originally implied or Management as you are now shifting to run the NHS.
Neither is correct
The NHS like any other business may use consultans AS CONTRACTOR where necessary
They DO NOT RUN the NHS and they are NOT on the Boards

The NHS is run by Executive Boards Headed by a CEO , Finance Directors, Operation Directors Medical Director etc with Non -executive Directors mainly as observers with no day to day function

Like I said do not digress stick to the topic and what you know.

The Mimister of Power in Nigeria is a political appointee eercising executive power on behalf of the President

Sorry I am not mixing anything YOU or your mates are the one defining a Ministers job as TECHNICAL not mehuh
Where in this treatise have I MIXED anything??
I think you are just seeking to be noticed
What nonsense is this technical department and being economical with the truth?
Did you read anything I wrote before quoting me

I already gave you lists of countries
instead you and your ilk are changing the rules to say it is not technical in the US France Germany etc but it is in Nigeria

Simple question on what basis

I really do not know what you mean by "administrative" because that needs defining

The way I understand it a CEO is not just an administrator but an Executive which is what the President is and Ministers are deputies of the president
Even our constitution mentions the phrase EXECUTIVE POWER. It is not trivial
They can enter contracts binding on the Nation for decades or generations

CEOs can decide to sell business Units e.g They can enter Merger talks and so on so let us be clear what you mean by administration
It is clear you are talking theory here

There is absolutely NOTHING technical about a Minister. That is why he has civil servants
A minister is a political role that exercises EXECUTIVE POLITICAL power on BEHALF of the President

Those two things must not be forgotten

Executive Political power
On behalf of the President

It is just as ridiculou to say
the COMMANDER IN CHIEF OF THE ARMED FORCES IS A TECHNICAL role or and administrative role whatever that means

It is an Executive role.

not technical and I do not know what administrative means if if is not Executive

The NHS is NOT run by consultants that iis nonsense
It is run by executives who very rarely are doctors , very very rarely.

No need to go fishing for stuff you know nothing about

There is no gazette or statute that defines Ministers in Nigeria as Technical

The constitution is clear on their function as executive deputies
U just playing with words.....
Clutching at straws....

A CEO is an executive position that handles managerial and administrative role of a business....

Merger and acquisition are non-technical aspect of business....

Dangote wants to sell his flour business, he doesn't need to know how wheat turns to flour to make that decision...

He's building a refinery, he has no business with how crude oil turns to gasoline or diesel to be the CEO...
But he's definitely going to appoint an expert-experienced engineer to ensure final products from his refinery are satisfactory and up to global standard....

The above role is what fashola is performing in ministry of power....
A role he has no business with....

A CEO will only make technical decision on behalf of the company if he's got the technical background to do so....
For example, sundar pichai can make technical decision for Google as the CEO, because he's a software engineer....

Pls just google definition of EXECUTIVE if u not familiar with the word....
It clearly mentioned administrative and managerial role u confused about....

Head of state as commander in chief is an assumed role to ensure civilian authority over the military in order to prevent state within a state....
The civilian head will normally lean on his service chiefs to make technical and military decision....
Except u the punk head guy in north Korea or whatever....

U mentioned NHS....
I said consultant in health related field run NHS....
I want to believe u know consultants isn't synonym with doctors and business consultants exist.....

Here is the board of directors of NHS
https://www.england.nhs.uk/about/board/members/#nonexec
There are all seasoned consultants with wealth of experience in health related fields b4 they joined NHS....
btw, 3 of them are medical doctors, so your statement that doctors rarely run NHS is a big lie....

Go back and read my first post....
It hasn't changed....
If fashola is to remain as power minister.....
He should be relieved of the technical duty and handed over to an independent technocrat just like cbn governor or NCAA director....
He's shortchanging the nation assuming that role....
PoliticsRe: Nigeria’s Generated Electricity Drops Further To 2,919MW by SIRTee15: 8:16pm On Apr 27, 2019
aribisala0:
This is an assumption

Just like saying its good to be good

We had soldiers and others in the past who did very well

The underlying assumption is the problem is technical

It is not.

For years NEPA was pubic enterprise it should have been privatized a long time ago bt the so called technocrats advised against it

GMs at NEPA almost always retired as millionaires with fleets of cars after stealing NEPA property blind
Transformers were stolen with impunity

Now we have privatized

There is the issue of NIGERIAN culture those are not technocrat issues.
Appointments made on Nepotistic grounds

I hate to prasse him but Buhari was competent as petroleum minister and things worked
. He had no tecnnical knowledge.

So this idea that there is a REQUIREMENT for technical knowledge

Why don't we on the same basis disqualify Civilians from becoming Commander in Chief of the Armed forces

because the idea is dogma not logic

Just a point of interest the first Nigerian CEO of MTN was A LAWYER

was he saddled with technical issue?

When he lost his job it was on a point of Law ironically

MTN failed to obey the law on registraion security identity
U mixing administrative roles with technical roles....
They are different....
Ministers are meant to be administrators not technocrats....

CEOs do not necessarily need to be technocrats because their role is mainly managerial n administrative....
The technical aspects is handled by the technical dept. and the head will definitely be a technocrat....

Now to nigeria....
The minister of finance shouldn't necessary be a technocrat but strategic parastatal heads in the ministry should be led by thorough-bred n sound technocrats e.g cbn governor, auditor general, accountant general, NDIC, security n exchange commisions etc
U can't appoint a medical doctor as cbn governor, that's recipe for monetary policy disaster....
The minister of defence can be a cobbler for all I care, but the service chiefs must be men of military ranks with wealth of experience in their respective field...
The aviation minister might not even know what an airport looks like, but u can't afford a novice to head nigeria civil aviation authority, accident n investigation bureau, FAN...

These strategic parastatals drive policy implementation n putting a novice in charge will seriously mess things up....
Civil servants in the ministry/parastatal will either destroy him or mess him up....
One thing to note is unlike China n other developed countries, career progression in federal civil service is promotion driven not merit...
Thus, nigerian civil servants cannot be called true technocrats and that's why they cannot be trusted to implement political n technical decisions without adequate supervision....
Their passion is material driven, not result driven.....
They know they cannot be dismissed for implementation failure and will still be promoted anyway....

It's different abroad where civil service progression is mostly result driven.....
The minister of health in UK doesn't run the NHS....
He's not even a member of the non executive board....
The NHS is run by consultants from differnt health related fields with wealth of experience in both clinical and admistrative practice.....
That goes to show how independent institutions work in developed countries.....

But even at that, non technocrat heads of institution come under scrutiny at critical periods...
For example, the director of FEMA during hurricane Katrina, Michael Brown was sacked after being accused of incompetence and his ability to head emergency and rescue agency was questioned due to his law background....

Fashola is directly involved in technical decisions as regards power...
That is wrong and it's obvious they scaming him...
That was how they scammed bola Ige n obasanjo by collecting huge amount of money for IPP, yet not one single digit of unit was added to the national grid....

The technical department in power sure needs a technocrat lead.....
Except we just want to economical with the truth....
PoliticsRe: Nigeria’s Generated Electricity Drops Further To 2,919MW by SIRTee15: 6:43pm On Apr 27, 2019
The problem with making a non technocrat the minister of power in Nigeria is that he will be saddled with technical responsibility as well as policy making....
And he's going to struggle with the former esp as our power sector is experiencing its most challenging period....
If fashola is to continue as minister of power, then we need to appoint an independent technical lead to head the technical department.....

Thereby shedding load off the national grid to supply the rest of the nation who will not be able to afford the project...

Who told you discos are poorly funded? When SIM card was 20k, how many Nigerians could afford it? GSM companies attracted investments not necessarily because they made excess money, but more because of the Chinese companies like Huawei and ZTE who in a bid to get the vendor contracts, sold their equipment very cheaply to the telcos as well as accepted long term and structured payments. This led to job losses and underemployment in telecoms. The Telco story is not as sweet as you project it. Insiders will tell you more. Meanwhile, stop thinking that higher prices necessarily mean improved services. If it were to be so, after increasing tariff in 2016 when Fashola resumed, power should have improved. You are looking at the problem from one angle of neo-capitalism
Really...
So that's how huawei become the largest manufacturer of telecommunication equipments....
But can u explain how what u wrote depresses the telecom market leading to underemployment....

The only reason why the usual suspects aren't named in Saudi prisons is because only Muslims are allowed to go on Hajj, nothing more. In any case, I'm sure quite a few of those carrying Yoruba and Hausa names are actually the usual suspects from a certain region operating under false aliases, as is their wont.
U too intelligent to be involved in this nonsense of bigotry...
Your posts are highly cerebral and depicts someone who's well educated and exposed....
Pls leave tribalism to the educated illiterates.....
