i studied government sector accounting in 400 level in nigerian university, there at least 4 different dollar cash reserves kept by nigerian government, the only one you know is the number 1, CBN general federal reserve account.

number 2, excess crude oil revenue account, numbers 3 to 4, a group of several different sovereign wealth accounts, all in billions of dollars .

http://www.informationng.com/tag/excess-crude-oil-account
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nigeria_Sovereign_Investment_Authority

nigeria has total of about $60 billion dollars cash reserves for any emergency, more than what south africa's $40 billion.

south africa is also heavily indebted in dollars to foreign creditors, about $40 billion. nigeria owes less than $8 billion.

nigeria is the richest country in africa in terms of mineral wealth reserve, congo DRC comes second to nigeria. proved on this forum before.

for you to lecture me in government finance, you need to read all the accounting books i have read grin
come on augugust please stop peddling lies on these tread its official as of August your had 46 billion dollars and South Africa had 53 billion dollars go to your Newspaper THISDAY and read it yourself

Nigeria: External Reserves Drop to U.S.$46.87 Billion As Naira Hits One Year Low
30 August 2013 , By Obinna Chima, Source: This Day
Nigeria's external reserves continued its lacklustre performance since this quarter as it fell to $46.871 billion on Wednesday, its lowest value this month.

This was just as the naira also weakened to its lowest value against the United States dollar this year at the interbank segment of the forex market as it closed at N163.70 to a dollar Thursday.

Data gathered from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) showed that the current position of the reserves derived mainly from the proceeds of crude oil production and sales represented a decline by $188 million or 0.4 per cent, compared to the $47.059 billion it stood as at August 1.

The foreign reserves largely hovered around $46.8 billion and $47.1 billion this month.

Although financial market analysts had predicted that the 50 per cent Cash Reserve Requirement (CRR) that was introduced for public sector funds by the CBN would support the accretion of the foreign reserves and also support naira appreciation in the short-term, this was yet to happen.

According to data gathered from the Financial Market Dealers Association (FMDA), at its current value at the interbank market, the nation's currency has shed a total of N7.03 kobo this year as against the N156.67 to a dollar it was at the beginning of the year. However, at the central bank's regulated bi-weekly forex auction, the naira maintained its value of N155.76 to a dollar. The CBN sold a total of $563.46 million at the two auctions held this week.

When contacted on the development, the Emerging Market Strategist at Standard Bank Plc, Mr. Samir Gadio, argued that it was questionable whether the CRR on public sector funds would intrinsically result in a qualitatively stronger naira because of its muted impact on market yields.

"It will rather cap the upside for dollar/naira and signal that the CBN will continue to defend exchange rate stability via direct and indirect measures as long as Governor Lamido Sanusi remains in charge (until June 2014).

"With around $47 billion of forex reserves, the central bank also has enough ammunition to supply adequate levels of dollars to corporate and, if needed, the interbank market, for some time. Additionally, the elevated Bonny Light oil price ($113.6/bbl on 22 Aug) reduces the possibility of a disorderly shift up in the exchange rate," Gadio said in a report to THISDAY.

Also, Kunle Ezun and Kenneth Asenime of the Ecobank Group, in a joint report said the naira remained under pressure due to structural imbalance between dollar supply and demand.

However, the treasurer of a bank said the country's high dependent on imported goods was putting pressure on the naira. He also argued the demand for forex by oil marketers for importation of petroleum products for the fourth quarter would further weaken the naira in the short-term. I hope these will clear all the lie I'm talking about so please stop misleading your people don't forget we live in an information free society

It is imperative that south africa in particular carefully studies the situation in nigeria. As africa's biggest economy, you are also at risk of terror attacks. Henry120:

Every military/ defence architecture in africa has shortcomings. If the biggest economy in africa is only just over 400 billion dollars, not even up to that of poland(600 billion usd), it shows the sort of challenges we face as a continent. it also means across every facet of each of those nations there are going to be shortfalls. Defence would not be immune.

We have always acknowledged that we, like the rest of africa have challenges. If we did not, we would have deployed at least 15 SU-30 MKK's to mali instead of 4 alpha jets. Same way south africa would have deployed your 11 roivalk helicopters to congo without demanding that the UN pays first before deployments are made.

The government of nigerian recently purchased an intelligence system from elbit systems of Israel for 50 million dollars. Ordinarily you should have such an equipment in all 36 states and the FCT. It would cost the government of nigeria 1.8 billion dollars to have such a system in all 36 states of the federation. Question is, Where is such a money going to come from? Or would you south africans shit it out for us?

I do not know what the system is, however I've giving you an idea of how almost impossible it is to run an effective intelligence agency with the resources available, not only in the case of nigeria, but for the rest of africa, including south africa.
that's why I said the sooner they get on top of these the better fo Nigeria and the Continent, and I hope that other Intelligence operative from other countries take what is happening at Nigeria as a case study and I also hope that they are sharing some intel as to how to handle terrorism in their respective countries

Henry120:

I'm only going to give you this attention once you twerp. The personnel of nigerian intelligence services are well trained, better trained than her south african counter-parts. The nigerian DSS is the best intelligence agency in africa. However training alone cannot win you a war, you need to have money, experience, equipment and expertise, all of these in there requisite numbers.

Look at the attack on the naval yard in washington D.C this past few days, would you say it's a lack of training that led to the avoidable loss of life?

Training again is holistic. There is not a single version of training. Admitting that there are shortfalls isn't a sign of weakness. It shows that you are aware of your areas of strength and are prepared to grow your area of shortfalls, and not live in a delusional state like you south africans.
You are the only Nigerians who is not Egostical ,because when I pointed out that shortcomings most Nigerians did not agree with me,Personnal I wish them to come on top of these challenge yes you can't kill an ideology but at least if the boys can have the ability to identify the moles in the Nigerian army half of their battle will be won

Henry120:

Foreign intervention into south africa perhaps. Nigeria only needs the resources to tackle the problem. That is, equipment, intelligence and training. Just like the indonesians get from the US for their detachment 88 unit. If we can get a similar unit like the detachment 88, fully funded, trained and equipped by the americans to deal primarily with terrorism and terrorist related activities. A dedicated unit that is well trained and equipped would help in curtailing terrorists activities. I do not believe terrorism can be defeated, how do you defeat an ideology. It is virtually impossible to do that.

We do not have the resources to defeat terrorism, we have been able to curtail terrorists activities, up until a few weeks ago. However, as we have seen Killing shekau doesn't bring and end to terrorism, another vampire would just take his place.

2) A negotiated settlement is not possible. you cannot use the example of south africa in this particular situation. As their demands are frivolous.
Jokes asideh there is one thing I know violent breath violent ther must be a way to deal with these madness because I believe killing the sect leaders won't solve the Problem at hand you rightly put it you can't beat an ideology so Nigerians themselves must find a settlement

50 south african soldiers k.illed by Seleka rebels....Truth Exposed

"Johannesburg - Would it be possible for the South African Defence Force (SANDF) to conceal the deaths of at least 23 more soldiers in last month’s battle with Seleka rebels in the Central African Republic (CAR) – and perhaps upwards of 37 more?

The government announced that 13 soldiers had died in the battle and 27 were wounded. It named the 13 dead and their bodies were publicly returned to South Africa to be honoured and buried today.

But the Seleka rebels have told local and international media they killed at least 36 soldiers in the fighting around the capital, Bangui, between March 22 and 24. And Radio France Internationale has quoted an anonymous source who claimed to have seen at least 50 body bags being loaded onto a SA Airforce C-130 Hercules cargo aircraft for transport back to South Africa on March 25, a day after the fighting ended."

Henry120: Nigeria was/ still is very involved in the operations in mali. I have pasted in the past multiple images of nigerian troops deployed in Timbuktu, Lere, mali-mauritania border, banamba and goa. We pulled out of the mission in mali because our mandate there had been fulfilled. We invested 1200 combat troops backed by 4 fighter jets, 3 attack helicopters and 50 million dollars in aid to the government of mali. We also have set-up a military hospital in mali. As such nigerians are proud of the military's achievements in mali.

For the recent operation against boko-haram in the border region with chad, nigerian troops despite suffering heavy casualties showed an overwhelming bravery in the face of a determined opponent. Most boko-haram fighters come from mali, niger and chad. A nairalander who also is a JTF member serving in yobe state, north-east nigeria, in his thread which hit the front-page 2-3 weeks ago attested to the fact that the core fighting members of boko-haram are mainly hired insurgents from mali, niger and chad. Nigerian troops killed 105 boko-haram members, while suffering losses of 16 confirmed troops and 9 missing. The operation was a success.

That been said, the operation also showed major shortcomings in the execution of the mission. The questions most nigerians have been asking is, why was there no air or artillery support. The nigerian airforce's own aeronautical and electrical engineering firm ( AESTL) recently completed PDM and re-activation and up-grades of 9 alpha jets and 1 C-130. I do not think it was a question of a lack of ground attack jets or MI-35p helicopters or artillery pieces. Only the major who ordered the operation can answer why he did not request for air support or artillery fire for such an important operation. This operation was an un-necessary risk taking. You cannot go for an mission of this magnitude and not have air cover. It is simply a failure laid squarely at the feet of the military planners, and they are culpable for this disaster.
You can spin doctor all you want lie the way you want Fact you lost 40 men and 65 are missing live with it and go tell that lies to you fellow nigerians ,now you claim that BH members are coming from outside nigeria that's a lie unless you prove otherwise your army is weak your fellow Nigerians always say you army is secretive not me,the is no secret they just don't have the neccesary equipment and training to fight BH period I suggest that they swallow their ego and come and ask South Africa for some training before is too late.

Taliban bomb kills Pakistani Army General, two other soldiers on home soil

ISLAMABAD | Sun Sep 15, 2013 9:57am EDT

(Reuters) - A roadside bomb killed a Pakistani general and another officer on Sunday near the border with Afghanistan, the Pakistani army said, rare high-ranking casualties in Pakistan's war against militants.

Major General Sanaullah Khan, along with a lieutenant colonel and another soldier, were killed in the Upper Dir district after visiting an outpost near the border, the army said.

Taliban spokesman Shahidullah Shahid claimed responsibility for the bombing, which Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said would not affect the fight against militants.

"Pakistan army has made substantial sacrifices to protect the nation against the menace of terrorism and such cowardly acts by terrorists cannot deter the morale of our armed forces," Sharif said in a statement.

The attack comes after weeks of discussions within Sharif's government about whether to pursue peace talks with the Pakistani Taliban, who are separate from Afghanistan's Taliban, although allied with them.

Last week, major political parties held a conference on the issue and agreed that talks should be pursued.

But it was not clear when talks might begin, who might take part or if they would be held under any conditions.

The killing of Khan and his colleagues would likely make it more difficult for the government to enter negotiations.

The Pakistani Taliban, an umbrella group of different factions, have said they would have their own meeting to decide whether to negotiate with the government. Analysts said it might be difficult for them to reach an agreement.

Taliban spokesman Shahid said the attacks would continue while the militants decided if the government's offer was genuine.

"If we find them serious we can talk, otherwise we will continue our attacks," he said.

The Taliban said last year that they would only consider talks if the government imposed strict Islamic law and went to war with old enemy India.
