Christianity EtcRe: Happy Feast Of Assupmtion To All Catholics by Syncan(m):
@Macelliot, thanks a lot, a happy feast day to you.
Christianity EtcRe: Happy Feast Of Assupmtion To All Catholics by Syncan(m):
SeaGold: Mary had four other sons that are Jesus half brothers.

They are Joseph named after his father, James, Jude and Simon.

Mathew 12:46, 13:55 Mark 6:3, John 2:12, 7:3, 5:10, Act 1:14, 1Cor.9:5, Gal.1:19
The bible clearly shows that "james
and joses who were called "brothers" of the
lord are not children of mary the mother of
Jesus but of another mary who gave birth to
them. This is clear from mt 27:56,61; 28:1
mk 16:1 lk 24:10. Jn 19:25

Edited.

Read and get knowledge, I've watched you enough exposing your ignorance all through the thread.

SalC: ......Relating John's action to ours as christians, we also have it in two dimensions....

1) We all know God is omnipotent, it is never difficult for him to come to our aid when we are in need, he even know what we want before we say it. Matt 6:8. Yet sometimes when we are in need, we pray and yet "God doesn't answer". And we tend to ask "Does God truly care about us?" Is he really all powerful? Is he really all knowing? Doesn't he want to answer? The questions are endless because we want him to act fast. We expect him to do what we want.

In a situation like this, most times we tend to forget the other side of God.

2) When we look at what has transpired between, Jesus, John and his disciples, we can relate it to what we do or ought to do as Christians.

The scripture said, "there is a time for everything" Ecc 3:1-15

As parents or guardians, we are expected to lay good foundations and teach our children the way they should go. Prov 22:6, but a time will come when we also direct those under us to discover for themselves the truth of life. . Paul use the example of feeding his children with milk of God's word at a tender age, but when they are mature, they no longer need milk but solid food. 1cor3:2

John in this instance has himself told his disciples of the messiah, showed him to them, now it is time for them to personally encounter him and convince themselves because he will soon be leaving them, they needed to be sure of whom to follow even when he is no more.

I would say, they went and got convinced, that was why they came back to inform him when their master John died. John 14:12.

This shows that, we too should not just tell our children about Jesus, we should also encourage them to seek him out and encounter him to be rest assured.
This is nicely put Sis, message is well extracted, I like this. Thanks.

Christianity EtcRe: A Thread For Catholics by Syncan(m): 10:27am On Aug 14, 2014
A nice submission from damerry and debbie there, I agree that John had no doubt whatsoever about Jesus, he had made that clear enough on various occasions as Salc has shown. However I am inclined towards Salc's last position on his apostles, they seem not to be in tune with what their oga john was saying. In their master, they saw a hero, and they used him as a yardstick. Despite what John was telling them about Jesus, they were not convinced, see how they reported to john that Jesus was baptising and drawing more followers Jn 3:26, like sychophants do today. When John was in prison, You can see them asking Jesus suspiciously why his own disciples don't fast like them Matt 9:14. John, I believe, knew his death was coming, yet he needed his beloved disciples to see Jesus as the Messiah that he is, someone greater than himself; who they hold in high esteem. Note that instead of Jesus responding and saying he is the one, he rather performed a lot of miracles before their very eyes and told them to go report same, imagine the amazement they would have been in, what better proof do you think they needed? That encounter, for me was for John's disciples, Jesus and John knew exactly what they were doing.

Christianity EtcRe: A Thread For Catholics by Syncan(m): 9:34pm On Aug 12, 2014
SalC: Good!
But then how can we relate this to this passage
Matt 18:15-17

V17 talked about treating one who didn't listen as though he were a pagan or tax collector.
Isn't that an example of giving up on the said person?
This Sister sef, so Jesus treatment of the tax collectors was that of abandonment abi? In that speech of his, you should see the meaning of the word "where sin abounds, grace abounds more" Rom5:20. Consider what he told Peter later in Vs 21. How many times will you forgive?
Christianity EtcRe: A Thread For Catholics by Syncan(m): 7:39pm On Aug 12, 2014
SalC: This post actually brought out the bowl of contention in the question John answered. Good one.
Thanks Sis.

I am not sure there was any bowl in contention there, John wasn't know for his appetite, he actually fed on wild bees and honey, so he couldn't have been dragging any bowl with them cheesy.

thanks for sharing debbie.
Christianity EtcRe: A Thread For Catholics by Syncan(m): 3:05pm On Aug 12, 2014
debbie: @damerry....thanks for that explanation. Its obvious you all are driving home one point.John was ordained a prophet even before he was born, even prohet Isaiah said it in the book of Isaiah 40:3..

my question is this, why did Jesus Christ allow John to baptize him? knowing that he was sinless and John was all about preaching on repentance and baptism?
Sis, I think Jesus answered that question himself, lets check it out... Matt 3:15, so it seems to me.
Christianity EtcRe: A Thread For Catholics by Syncan(m): 11:01am On Aug 12, 2014
debbie: but when he was called a prophet by the people he rejected it.....why? explain biko
The passage you refer to, isn't it this one : " And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elias? And he saith, I am not. Art thou that prophet? And he answered, No".

Nne. Try take a look at the highlighted word there, some versions use the. It was specific...a particular prophet who they refer to as "the prophet". He wasn't that Prophet (most likely Elisha who got a double portion of Elijah's prophetic spirit... also due to 2Kings5:8 ). He was a prophet, but not that prophet.
Christianity EtcRe: A Thread For Catholics by Syncan(m): 10:28am On Aug 12, 2014
SalC: Ok! Here we go...

We all already know John the baptist is the fore-runner of Jesus Christ, the Son of Zachariah and Elizabeth and the nephew of Jesus. So I won't dwell on that for now, rather I will talk about those aspect of his life, ministry and actions or deeds which are most likely misunderstood.

Like I said, am not explaining things (I don't even know) but providing bible references to make contributions a bit easier.

1) Is John the baptist a prophet?

John 1: 19-23. Here I will lay emphasis on V21, John was asked is he was Elijah and he said No, he was also asked if he was the prophet and he also said No!

Matt 11:9 Tell me, what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes indeed, but you saw much more than a prophet. Here Jesus seem to affirm that John is a prophet and even more.

Matt 14:5 Herod wanted to kill him, but he was afraid of the Jewish people because they considered John to be a prophet.

Comparing his verses, I ask, is/was John the baptist a prophet?
if yes, could it be that there is something John the baptist didn't know about himself?
And most importantly, what makes one a prophet, ie what qualifies one as a prophet?

Let me also add a question here that affects us all...

Is it possible for us to have a spiritual gift we don't know of or understand?
For me he was a prophet, he was God's mouth piece, his father even acknowledged him as such in the "Benedictus" Lk 1:76. I believe he knows who he was clearly, for he knew his mission...to prepare the way for the lord, One who he could not "untie even the sole of His sandals". I do not think Jn 1:21 shows he didn't know he was a prophet.

debbie: Many times we easily give up on a brother whom we feel is lost or derailed. Its not easy human-wise to go after that singular sheep....after all we have more than enough in the sheepfold,so naturally we will ask,why will i have to worry and disturb myself? But to our God,a soul is as important as the others. That is why he is all Loving and caring.
Personally i have at one point in my life given up on someone and even felt that some people i know will never change, but i realized that if God in his infinite mercy didnt give up on my.....why should i let go?
A splendid submission...we have no reason to let go.
Christianity EtcRe: A Thread For Catholics by Syncan(m): 8:08am On Aug 12, 2014
Tell me. Suppose a man has a hundred sheep and one of them strays; will he not leave the ninety-nine on the hillside and go in search of the stray? I tell you solemnly, if he finds it, it gives him more joy than do the ninety-nine that did not stray at all. Similarly, it is never the will of your Father in heaven that one of these little ones should be lost.’ Matt 18:12-14

Is there someone you've considered a lost cause,...a brother who abuses drugs, a father who has abandoned his family, a mother who is an alcoholic, a sister who is lost to vanities, a friend who is deep into debauchery, etc?

Can you think of how much effort you've really put in towards getting the lost one back, have there been sleepless nights of prayers, worn out knees from kneeling, swollen eyes from crying, lean purse from spending, bruised ego from pleading, etc. Do you think it's been enough to despair yet? Jesus said his interest is "to do the father's will" Jn 4:34, what is your interest, isn't it to do the father's will too? Note that the father has willed that none "of these little ones should be lost" as read above, so how are you helping to fulfill this will; if you are not like the shepherd, seeking the the lost sheep out. St. Monica persevered, she was rewarded by the conversion of her son St. Augustine.

Dear brethren, who is that lost cause of yours, it's not late to start up a new novena of prayers, not late to renew efforts in reaching out, not late to start another round of visits to the blessed sacrament, nor is it late for a novena of Holy Communion, all in petition to God for this cause. Oh, and when you do, approach this cause humbly, patiently and with perseverance; knowing that it is not by your making, but by the grace of God, for God will make things beautiful again in His time.

Good morning brethren, a splendid day ahead to all.

SalC: Alright we have something to talk about.... And that is ....

The life and ministry of Saint John the Baptist

I did have a brief discussion with some people I incidentally or coincidentally met about the great biblical figure, though brief but quite interesting.

In my subsequent posts, I will put up some questions and bible references to kick start this discussion

NB I am not going to write thesis on his life and ministry but salient questions for discussion.

At the end, what did we learn from his life, ministry and death in connection with Jesus Christ...
Nice one.
