PoliticsRe: Yar’adua Sick, Hospitalised by Tats(m): 11:43am On Sep 01, 2008
It is a complete shame that we cannot be provided with accurate information regarding his health. Instead, grown and seemingly responsible men keep telling lies and throwing their pride into the gutters! There should be an established system to manage a country in any ruler's absence. It clearly shows that this is lacking here as several things (one of which I read is handover by military chiefs) are on hold awaiting the president's return.

In developed societies, people will be correctly informed at every stage of the situation. This current state of affairs leaves much to be desired about the progress of our development. Our Leaders simply do not have visions of where they want to take us to and are not ready to change and make progress for our country.
PoliticsRe: Is Nigeria A Developing Or A 3rd World Country? by Tats(m): 11:07pm On Aug 18, 2008
Mpele:
I find the fact that other countries can come to a conclusion that others are third world and they are first world. What criteria was used to judge other countries. Who gave them the right or the go ahead to determine what is what. For instance I find it hard to believe that China can be labeled a developing country (so called third world) and a country like Italy be labeled a first world country. Italy has one of the most worn out infrastructure in the world, be it sporting infrustructure and buildings, their economy is not as big as the Chinese economy. With China I'm telling you that country's infrustructure is even better than what the Americans and the West have. The sporting infrustructure, the buildings in Shanghai and Beijing etc are top class. But hey! for the Europeans, China is third world. The crux of the matter is that countries like South Africa,Argentina, Mexico, Brazil, Malaysia, India,China, and to some extent Tunisia can no longer be classified as third world. Those who always come with terms to determine ones beign can simply call these countries second world.
You need to go to the chinese hinterlands and see poverty to try and compare Italy with China! It is not the gleaming buildings in beijing, Shanghai or Shenzhen that you will safely conclude that China is a fantastic country. Overall quality of live, GDP per capita and other more economic, social, political factors are what you should be looking at.

Nigeria to me is third world. Go to some othe countries like Brazil and see the difference between them and Nigeria. we are not even in the same class! However, there are still many things you will see or experience that make countries such as Brazil not to be in the same class as most of the European and north american countries.

You better know what you are doing. The fact that you have a two year visa does not mean you can stay in the UK for two years o (unless it is resident permit for two years). Whether you have a two year or a five or ten year visa, if it is a visitor's visa, you are not allowed to remain in the country for more than six months at a time (unless you obtain further permission to remain/ extend your stay). I'll advise you to hold your return ticket (tickets can get issued up to a year for for return tickets). Sometimes, the immigration officers so not ask for it, but nowadays, they do more often than not.
Excellent response!

You need to demonstrate strong ties to your country of residence as any applicant for a U.S visa is considered an intending immigrant. Don't know much about German visa.

We may have to start backing up our facts with confirmed additive manufacturer literature
Its quite a long time ago I found myself in the lubricants sector so I can't remember the different formulae anymore grin  grin. I leave it to the current experts  cheesy
Car TalkRe: How Does Engine Oil Affect Motor Engine Performance? by Tats(m): 12:04am On Jul 11, 2008
@Ivvie has provided enough points, but just to add more,

Engine Oils are typically a blend of Base oil and additives. The additives are special chemicals that are added to the base oil (sort of ordinary oil) to enable it function properly at different temperatures, with the right viscosity (fluid movement) and also protect the engine. After each blending in the plant, the different mixtures formulated are usually carefully tested in the lab to meet the requirements of different vehicle engines (including motorcycles), hence you have different types of engine oil for different engine types.

Usually, most of the oil people buy off the streets (I mean those that are not sealed and usually measured in cans) in Nigeria have very minimal additives added to it and hence not good for your engine. That's why they are cheap, as additives are very expensive and will make the lubricant price high. You need to get the right oil for your engine and you shoud be able to get that advice from a good mechanic or filling station store or from the manual of your car.

an ex-flat mate of mine didn't pay whilst i was a student for 3 years and guess what happened afterwards. i was made liable as they have all my details and stuffs. They actually deducted the money instalmentally from my salary for 6 months (about 500 pounds every month). non payment of c-tax is punishable by jail term
Its a pity man! Imagine 500 quid out of your salary every month!

Life here in the UK is different strokes for different folks. Lots of Nigerians are doing fine and others are managing to survive. As the saying goes, you cut your coat according to your cloth, abi na size? Overall, it is expensive but peaceful (though not for Teens with all the stabbings). The higher you earn, the more you get taxed.

Its okay for me here and am enjoying it. At least I see where my tax goes, can plan my life and come home to electricity! Can you use Microsoft money to budget and plan your finances in Naija? no way!  grin grin grin Once you step out of home in Lagos, its difficult to estimate how much you will spend during that day cheesy cheesy

With the Free movement across Europe, many Nigerians in other European countries have moved to the UK. They feel more at home here than in Germany, Austria or Italy, e.t.c. Have met a few and know some.

Naijas get oyibo pali  grin
Oyibos no get our pali and no fit get am grin E hard o! If you like, live in Naija for 40 years, them no go still give you pali. There are some countries that may also have this policy and I have tried to understand the rationale behind it, but can't seem to. Anyone got clear rationales for or benefits of the policy?

I knew one oyibo who had lost some rights in his country in Europe (except his pali) because he has been living in naija for about thirty years. Yet he has never been approved for a naija pali.

As for getting visas now if you live in London, it seems to be as difficult and time consuming to apply for a visa in London as it is if you applied in Lagos or Abuja! What have we done!!!
CareerRe: Female, Wants To Be An Engineer? by Tats(m): 5:15pm On Jun 27, 2008
jay bee:
i specifically said a "working traffic light"
mould/casing is less important compared to the gates, JK flip flops, time delays, programs used to make people go home safely.
and they don't fabricate components. they are done by robots (precision engineers)

And for your information production engineering is different from mechanical engineering.
mechanical engineering is a course that one studies whilst production engineering is a job that any engineer can do.

They are all important my guy but in terms of job prospect, mechanical is still very low on the pecking order. prove me wrong please!
Before something can become working, it ought to have gone through a process! So that can't be discounted.

Yes, Casing is less important, but can gates, JK flip flops, time delays, programs hang in the air without a casing? Most Engineering functions complement each other. Turbines that generate electricity do not fall off the sky! They are designed and manufactured.

Lets not go into pay matter. I like Elect/Elect and recognise its importance, so lets not waste time on which is and which is not important.
CareerRe: Female, Wants To Be An Engineer? by Tats(m): 4:49pm On Jun 27, 2008
jay bee:
No one is making it less important. was only highlighting the fact that civil/structural engineers stand better chance of getting jobs once graduated to the young lady.
Since you seem to know about engineering. can you explantiate on how critical mechanical engineering is to a working traffic light.
There you go! I am now in trouble with you!!!  grin grin

Who does the designs of the moulds and other components and oversee fabrication of the street light casings or housings? Certainly the mechnical/Production Engineers.

I guess you may start asking me about each and every item in this world, when I did not say that Mechanical Engineers create every item grin grin
CareerRe: Female, Wants To Be An Engineer? by Tats(m): 4:27pm On Jun 27, 2008
jay bee:
First of all the lady that asked the question is not based in naija but UK and my answer was geared towards engineering industries in the UK.
Secondly, i don't know if you are an engineer but me being a qualified chartered engineer i can't remember when mechanical engineering became the backbone of all engineering.

If you are looking at it from the narrow minded of nigerian industries whereby a graduate of religious studies can work in the banks then you ought to do more research and widen your horizon
It should be apparent to you that Mechanical is very broad and critical to other Engineering functions. Most engineers rely on equipments designed and manufactured by mechanical engineers to carry out their jobs.

How easy will it be for other Engineers to function without design, thermodynamics and fluid mechanics? Remember that fluid includes air and not only liquid. If you require, I will expatiate on how aeronautics, civil/structural, chemical, petroleum engineers ,e.t.c rely on mechanical.

For your info, I am not a Mechanical Engineer and only trying to be objective here. The point is not to deride other Engineers or Engineering professions or show them as less important, as I am one too (but not chartered as I don't need to be)!
CareerRe: Female, Wants To Be An Engineer? by Tats(m): 1:36am On Jun 27, 2008
I would advise you go for Electrical/Electronics or Chemical Engineering. You've got several career choices with both of them especially as Nigeria moves towards industrialisation. Civil is okay, but largely geared towards housing in Nigeria. Petroleum is also good in Nigeria, but may be a little restricted if you want to have choices. Mechanical is very broad as you can work in many industries, but fewer females tend to study Mechanical.

I believe success is relative but I disagree that the kind of school doesnt count.

hello! it does. Some schools help you to discover yourself while some will make you believe you can't go beyond a certain level.

I attended 2 secondary schools. in the first, I only studied 2 days to the exam period and I passed very well, by the school standard. When I moved to the other school, I discovered the previous school had almost ruined me. I almost failed in the 1st term. Pronto! I adjusted to the new standard and that made a great difference in my life.

The truth is that the secondary school impacted even more to my life than the university did.
I had exact same experience. Was a "star" in my first secondary school and when I changed school after one year, I struggled to survive for a term in my new school and finally found my feet in the second term. Overall, it made a difference to what I am today. I believe that it may not have been same story if I had gone to only the first school.

just buy tolulene instead and xylene or get a thinner that has only those two as ingredients, no methanol or ethanol, those r not good for yur tank, all d best

Thanks for the advice, I will be on my way to buying one as soon as I am able to. grin grin grin

Dr Kitaun:
@Tats

do I need to tell u that a graduate from federal or state uni is more rugged than one from private unis ?

no one is saying oe must suffer to get educated but then in the Nigerian context, like Tai Solarin prayed MAY YOUR ROAD BE ROUGH !

its in the roughness of the road that makes a man tougher and stronger ! who told u that peeps from foreign unis when they get here don't have problems initially ? abegi ! cool
There is no denying the fact that students of Fed and State Unis are more rugged judging by what they experienced. But we do not need such ruggedness to survive in a normal society.

When I said people that studied in Europe and america and who had it good in school are working in good Companies, I wasn't refering to Nigerians and not companies in Nigeria.  just reminding you that these students did not suffer in school, yet their output at work is good and their economies are doing fine.

And to the point where you meant that Peeps from foreign universities have issues when they get back to Nigeria, yes they ought to. Afterall, the peeps are coming from a society where there are some differences in how work is approached and completed, so why won't they have issues initially. It will take a very tolerant person coming from overseas to overlook some of our natural attitude to work.

na here una still dey ?  undecided

how many of the so-called 20 1st class candidates passed WAEC or NECO with at least 6 distinctions and above ? yeye !  tongue  grin grin

when u have children paid so much for, then as a parent u should expect more from the school and the kids BUT THEN ! the schitzo is THE OUTSIDE WORLD AND HOW UR KIDS FARE !

Life is not about being a 1st class graduate . . .even day to day idiots cop 1st class these days so what are we talking about here ?  undecided

all or most of these private unis just don't prepare their garduates for the real challenges of life, thats my main grouse . . .AM SURE SOME OF THESE 1ST CLASS GRADUATES CANT WRITE AN ESSAY ABOUT THEMSELVES TO SAVE THEIR LIFES ! grin
but yet that is not to say some don't deserve the degrees . . .I even praise their lectuters for being magnanimous, HOW MANY OF 'EM LECTURERS COPPED 1ST CLASS ? undecided

well who cares ? WOLE SOYINKA AND GANI FAWEHINMI NEVER HAD 1ST CLASS DEGREES, NOT EVEN 2ND CLASS BUT THEIR NAMES CAN NEVER BE ERASED FROM THE ANNALS OF THIS NATION . . . cheesy
ITS NOT ABOUT UR APTITUDE, ITS ABOUT UR ATTITUDE !
How does the usual suffering/challenges students face in a Federal or State university prepare them for the challenges in Zenith bank, BAT, Exxonmobil, Unilever or PWC (e.t.c.)?

How are Graduates in European and American Universities able to work successfully in Major companies in their countries without going through the kind of challenges some of us went through in Universities in Nigeria?

Bottomline is I don't believe that you must suffer in school to be able to face challenges in the workplace. We are even getting to the point where we consider the abnormal as normal in Nigeria sad sad sad.

Most of the graduates in Private universities are not from wealthy homes as people perceive. Their parents have decided to sacrifice to ensure that their children went to these schools. I know several of such parents. Are all the graduates of these schools not working in the same offices as some of you are or leaving for schools overseas for their masters?

In the Long run, how much do some people spend even to get accommodation in other non private universities in a year? Tiny bedspaces and corners go for multiples of tens of thousands of Naira in one year in some of these schools and what does all the various expenses students incur add up to in a year? Of course now that you are enjoying the big bucks in the workplace, you have forgotten all the challenges of even registering on the first day you stepped into school. grin grin
