HealthRe: Should The Toilet Seat Be Up Or Down? by Tats(m): 2:31am On Jan 12, 2008
I think most Ladies prefer the sit to be kept down and most Guys prefer it to be up. I prefer it to be up. Sure the toilet seat position does cause problems in relationships/homes!
PhonesRe: Between Iphone & Nokia N95 8gig by Tats(m): 6:17pm On Jan 04, 2008
I've got the Iphone and even with all the "effizy", I sometimes miss my nokia 6680 (not even N95)!. I wanted a new camera and thought I would not need to buy one again after buying the iphone but i was wrong. So I still had to buy a camera. The N95 has a lot of functions but at least, I have been able to do away with my mp3 and carry only two gadgets (iphone and nokia 6630) as against three (Nokia 6680, 6630 and an mp3). So it has helped me to reduce what I carry in my pocket.

Overall, I am enjoying the iphone and hope they send updates fast. If I had bought the N95, I would still have felt that I was missing something by not having the iphone, so I have no regrets. One thing though. I have not been able to transfer my contacts from Lotus notes to the iphone so I have to manually type all my contacts in the iphone (A pain I would say!)

PoliticsRe: How Nigerians Are Abused In China. by Tats(m): 7:30pm On Dec 31, 2007
What exactly is the genesis of the problem? There must be a reason why the visas are not being extended for Nigerians. It may have been as a result of past abuses of the facility that has caused this. Sometimes we keep asking ourselves why us, yet we do not know what people before us have done. I just came back from a trip within Europe and as usual, Immigrations spent more time with me when they saw my passport. Imagine going through series of questionings from immigrations even on arrival from a domestic flight within that country!

I would agree that some people with genuine cases may have become victims of the Chinese crackdown, but What exactly are we expecting our Government to do about it? Tell the Chinese government to start extending our visas within the country? Or tell them to start treating us fine?

A university official here in the UK once told a close relative of mine who grew up here to compulsorily produce his British passport and not any other document(s) in order to be allowed to pay home fees in his newly admitted school. He had sent his passport out for some other verification purpose and so did not have it with him at that time. The official finally mentioned to him that if he was originally from some other west african country he may have accepted the other documents as he quite believed he was British (of course the guy had been living here for the last 15 years). He said that they had seen more than enough irregularities/tricks from us (Nigerians) in the past and so will not take even 1% chance of signing off his case.
TravelRe: UK Tourist Visa Times 'To Be Halved' by Tats(m): 4:15am On Dec 25, 2007
EloSela:
I doubt that they will lose much money from tourism seen as most of the tourists who come to spend money are either from the US, The European Union and other countries where one one doesn't need a visa to visit the UK, including Japan.

The new change is cleverly aimed at those who do need a visa and in most cases make full use of their six month's allowance in the UK.

Another note; Rich people from countries that do require a visa to visit won't need sponsorship  and definetly won't need to spend more than 3 months in the UK anyway.
You are correct that the UK may not have much in terms of resources and by making this amendment to their law it helps towards only getting those in who are more likely to spend rather than illegally earn money to send back home.

These people love making money over here. By the time that £1000 is paid to the embassy as a bond and sat in an high interest account for three months a tidy sum would have been generated in interest. All they will have to do is give you your £1000 back as promised after sponsored person goes back and keep the interest for themselves. Last year several millions of visas were granted to the UK so we are talking big money here if everyone were to pay £1000 a pop.
@EloSela,  I agree it is a news item, but so much is being said about it. Such actions are taken by other countries and it hardly makes headline news. I think the issue of immigration is overflogged here. Hardly will you not see something about immigration in daily newspapers. I rarely read the Daily mail for instance because it dwells so much on immigration issues that I get tired of it. You've made some good points here particularly regarding the fact that many of the tourists that come here do not require visas to visit the UK. So they are unaffected by all these laws. People from Russia, Ghana, Nigeria, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh and Jamaica traditionally make more applications to the Uk Embassies in their countries, so they are more likely to be affected by the new laws introduction.

I do agree that Tourism is extremely important to the economy of the UK, but so is the services industries. The financial, Insurance and consulting industries for instance provide services to worldwide clients. There is still some appreciable levels of manufacturing and agriculture and exports are huge from the UK, (not forgetting the money spinners "Foreign students" grin)

I really wonder what exactly the £1000 is for. What if I sponsor someone who comes here and refuses to go back? Will I force the person to go back simply because I want to collect my 1k, or will the money be the removal fees when the person is eventually caught and asked to leave the country? It reminds me of what i understand is going on at the South African embassy in Nigeria, where people are made to pay some deposits before being issued visas.

I think we should get things in our country right and stop being affected by all manner of laws made by other countries.

I can't help but agree with the poster on this. I think some of our Leaders do not even think properly before they make statements. The first shallow thought that comes out of their mind is what they blurt out! They can give any excuse for squandering money.

PhonesRe: Is The New $600 iPhone Really Worth Investing In? by Tats(m): 9:21pm On Dec 20, 2007
Just got myself an Iphone for £269 and am on a £35 monthly plan. Its a lovely phone, but the excitement has already worn off. My battery lasts less than one day on full charge! Learnt from some forums that keeping Wifi off when not in use will prolong battery life. Did that today and it is definitely true, but battery life is still not impressive. I also keep the screen brightness low to conserve battery. By the way, I cannot even enjoy the phone as much because for nearly half the day, I am at work!
TravelRe: UK Tourist Visa Times 'To Be Halved' by Tats(m): 12:12am On Dec 19, 2007
There is no need to announce that they will halve the visa period. They should simply do it and not broadcast it. Afterall, United States and Schengen embassies give people visas for a few weeks!

I don't think £1000 pounds will stop anyone desperate to travel from doing so.

Its worth it for me. I am enjoying every bit of it. I don't really miss home as I get to see my friends and other Nigerians. Naija food and some drinks are very much available (Even Guinness Malt!). I also attend my community meeting. Work is fine and I meet Nigerians in the office. So for me, it is alright.

I spoke to M*** and mentioned you to him, as he is in town. He promised to check for you when he pops in to the office this week. He should be able to discuss your concerns with you and offer any professional or personal advice, especially since you work in same Dept and live close to each other. Enjoy your week and no more culture shock! Sorry, I have been really busy with work and so have not been able to maintain contact.

That's why am using the Emergency Travel Certificates to travel during xmas since I can’t get a new passport
I have never heard good stories about the treatment of the few people that I know who used ETC to travel. Their experiences both at the departing airport and the arrival airport in Nigeria have been unpleasant. So my advice is be careful about this decision.

One corporate lady had her passport stolen in the US on a business visit and had to return to back to Nigeria with an ETC. She was virtually begining to be treated as a deported prostitute in the airport in Lagos just like some others who had just been deported from italy and she had to stand her ground before she was allowed to go home. She even had letters from the Nigerian Embassy in the U.S and U.S Police report, but stilll they wanted to treat her shabbily.

Car TalkRe: New Cars Vs Tokunbo Cars In Nigeria by Tats(m): 12:09am On Nov 16, 2007

@Tats

I believe I used the word "Assemble" and not "Manufacture."  I really don't know the entire details but whenever we ordered a new Toyota's, it took about 4 months to 6 months to build it to our detail before it was delivered and they came with Ogun or Osun state licence plates.  I think there is an assembly plant there.  The highest mileage I have seen was 0.4km so, I believe there is an assembly plant there.  I would find out in a few days.
Yeah, I understand the difference. However Toyotas are not assembled anywhere in Nigeria.

The cars you ordered usually came with those number plates because the plates were cheaper and faster to get/buy in those states than in Lagos. They must have been driven directly from the port to your location. Wheras, 0.4km which is 400 metres is too small a distance. That mileage on a car can only be possible if the car was brought on a car trailer from the holding lots in port and not driven. http://carsnigeria.org/ and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota
Car TalkRe: New Cars Vs Tokunbo Cars In Nigeria by Tats(m): 11:05pm On Nov 15, 2007

I hope you are aware that cars are built tropicalised and non tropicalised. You aren't saving any money cross-buying. Buying an american specified vehicle to be used in nigeria is simply a money-pit waiting to happen. If you decide to carry out modifications on the engine, it won't stop the interior and roof linings to bubble away and eventually seperate.

I agree with you. Most of the cars advertised on Nairaland are heavier than new cars in price. A decent camry is the cost of a Benz in dollars here. Quite alarming to know. Cars are still assembled in Osun or Ogun state (Toyota's) and I'll rather wait 3 to 6 months for the package to be completed than buy a car not designed for the intended region.
Who manufactures cars in Osun or Ogun state? Toyota? Never heard of that before!
Car TalkRe: Chevrolet Aveo Vs Toyota Yaris ! by Tats(m): 10:58pm On Nov 15, 2007
Happening babe grin. Good decision to go for a new car. You ladies should opt for the Toyota Yaris.

The aveo is simply a Daewoo car masked as a GM (Chevrolet) brand, as General Motors now owns Daewoo. I would rate the Aveo in a group with Kia.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chevrolet_Aveo

This is NOT TRUE until you show me a proof that I am wrong!!!

Tell me how 2009 Diversity Visa Lottery still RUNS from October 3, 2007 through December 3, 2007. I do not see anything to STOP PROCESSING for NEW PASSPORT and NEW VISA.
I personally know 2 people travelling for christmas who have to get Nigerian visas on their British passports because there is no new passport or renewal of passports in the embassy. No long stories, see Nigerian High commission london website http://www.nigeriahc.org.uk/

Hello @Tats,
Glad you ran into this thread, from the little profile info you dropped, I figure you will be an asset to this thread, we have a lots of young Nigerians that are interested and some already building a career in this fields (Procurement, logistics/SCM), and so your advice/knowledge / expertise will be most welcomed.

Also, I think its about time we start building a more formal networking structure, outside of Nairaland, while still retaining this thread and making regular post.

I already have made contacts with, about 3 other professionals in the field, two of them in the UK, one a Student, the other a Logistics supervisor in TotalfinaElf- UK and the 3rd person the CEO of Prolog consulting.

So if you are interested, just signify, I will try and put structure in place that we can make it possible for everyone to know our varying needs, career prospects, and see how we can build synergy to help ourselves.

No need for email addresses or numbers yet, just signify with (Interested), once the Numbers of interested folks is up to 10 or more, then we can start a more closed up forum.

Hoping, to get favorable responses from all interested Folks.
I am interested in a closed up forum to discuss and contribute professional knowledge in SCM. I am in the management cadre of a large global company. We can discuss better in small numbers and get to know more about our careers, specialisations and competence areas. It should be interesting as Supply chain is wide and the profession is dynamic.
