Interesting discussion, wonderful to see how much knowledge we can disseminate and debate when we need to.

If Juju does exist, i have no doubt that it'd work on or for only those who believe fervently in it.

Was it not you that went to watch ball or something during your NYSC and nearly died on your way back home??  grin

Yep! I have never been so scared in my life like i was that dark night so many years ago.
Harrowing NYSC indeed, and i wasn't even in the North but in Abia State right here!

But we all go through this phase, and i cannot understand why people are always calling for the scheme to be scrapped. 22 year old Americans are fighting in Afghanistan, graduates from Israeli, Iranian and Swiss schools have 1 year compulsory millitary service - yet here we are complaining because we are being pressed into serving the Nation.

yes, that's the spirit, when we kill several people of northern extraction, the government will be forced to sit up and listen. i dont know how many times southerners will have to be murdered in cold blood before someone will say enough is enough. anyway, i dont blame all those hausa or fulani muthafuckas, what with following a violent religion and being stark illiterates to a man, what else do you expect? i hate those fuckers. if it were my sister that was killed, by now, i would have personally been responsible for the deaths of at least 25 aboki suya men or those dirty money changers.
So when you become a cold hearted killer to take your revenge on cold hearted killers, where's the moral justification to keep complaining?

For God's sake, stop whining about scrapping NYSC! that isn't going to happen soon. I had a mostly horrible time while serving, but there are lots of people who also had a wonderful time while serving too. So it's a two way thing.

Please reflect on the fact that it could have been worse. Some countries require you to do a compulsory one year stint in the army instead. And guess what happens if war breaks out during your army tour?

I survived my harrowing NYSC, and so will you.

Windows 7 runs snappily even on Netbooks powered with Intel's low end Atom processor.
The system specs argument may have been valid in Vista days, but in this day and age it's ridiculous if you do not have a system that meets the minimum reqs for Win 7. Throw away your Pentium 2 laptop with it's SIS integrated graphics card and move up into the modern age grin

When 90% of the respondents tell you Win 7 is obviously faster than Vista, you should realize then that the problem comes from your end.

PS: I've been using Win 7 since december last year (beta, then RC 1)

I hate to be the party pooper here, but in reality the Federal Government is under no obligation to make any financial remuneration to the family of the slain girl. What they owe the family is to either bring the murderers to book, or to show they are doing the best they can.

Sadly, the likelihood of the killers being found is very slim. If only we had well managed DNA databanks like in the western world, that would have made a difference!

So what study have you done that shows that all police people are 'gangsters, pimps, armed robbers and murderers'? That description can easily fit thousands of our undergraduates today - should we then 'blow them up'?

What sane person becomes a roadside mechanic where he'll earn less than 10k a month if not that he plans to steal from people's cars. Therefore, all mechanics should be killed!
ditto for labourers - they must all die!
Apprentice barbers too - they must all be up to something fishy since they earn around 15k a month or less. They must all die!!

Texaspette,
I don't think the average Nigerian gives a damn about the abusive, corrupt and murderous Nigerian police so don't expect any cry if one is killed for whatever reason.

Back to the real topic please.
I do not see how i have deviated from the main topic. it is relevant to bring up the relative amounts we pay to the families of people who lose their lives in the service of the Nation.

Beaf:
^Each dead policeman has probably created a few widows and orphans or caused losses above N200 k. We are better off just blowing up the whole lot.
Is that so? This is merely ignorance speaking. There are lots of corrupt policemen, no doubt, but there are also lots of honest ones. The Police force is no more or less corrupt than the general Nigerian society.
Despite their issues, if there were no police presence on the streets, Nigeria would have been a far more unruly place. I don't care what your feelings towards the JTF or Army are, but exhorting criminals to 'blow up the whole lot' of policemen, who are also husbands, fathers, uncles and breadwinners to many families is just stupid.

It is another matter to discuss the morality and common sense in placing a man in harm's way with obsolete weaponry and paying him only 15 - 20k monthly to stand under the elements and risk his life.
NYSC › Re: Family Of Slain Corps Member Rejects N2m by texazzpete(m): 8:20am On Oct 14, 2009
I don't understand why you people are jumping over nuzo for his honest statement.
Any money paid by the Federal Government is merely supposed to be a gesture, nothing more. Is the FG supposed to put a value on the girl's life and pay the family?

The only thing we have to demand from the FG is an investigation into her murder and a concerted effort to bring her killers to justice. Left to me, the 2 million naira should have been offered as a reward to anyone who can assist in bringing her killers to justice.

Sentiments aside, why do we not show a similar concern for the families of policemen killed in the line of duty in Nigeria? Are you aware that a police widow typically gets less than N200k after their breadwinner is killed?

nex:
When a few boys started making noise in the Niger Delta, we saw them wearing faded jeans and facecaps with leaves covering their faces and totting AK 47, a couple of months later, they blew up a barracks in Port Harcourt and left a note threatening the Chinese not to come to the Niger Delta, they're wearing full armour including military boots and baraclavas waving M16 Rifles in the air.

There were two things that caught my attention:

1. Who's afraid of the Chinese?

2. Which militant group in the whole world will prefer to drop their AK 47s for M16s unless they were getting large supplies free from the country of origin?

You can also add to that:

3. Which country goes around the world looking for militant groups to liaise with and use against their countries?

4. Which country in the world works hardest to see the downfall of Nigeria and is doing a lot about it?
1. There are far more Ak-47s than M-16s in the ND millitant arsenal. It also happens to be used in the armies of over 16 NATO countries, and is easily available on the black market. Way back in 1982, TIME magazine reported that a hand grenade could be bought in the Middle East black market for $20. Getting assorted weapons on the black market is extremely easy.

2. As said before, variants of the M16 are made in over 15 countries. It is utterly implausible that the US would provide weapons to the Niger Delta millitants.

3. It is in the US's best interests that Nigeria remains whole. Nigeria is a potential massive recruitment ground for Al Qaeda, and a Nigeria in chaos could easily lead to a Somalia type situation. There is absolutely no way that this is a goal of the United States.

most of the weapons used by the millitants are got from the same sources they sell their oil to. In fact, given the booming arms black market and the amount of bunkered oil sold to these people, it's only due to the naivete of the millitants that they have not acquired even more sophisticated weaponry like stinger AA missiles and Russian made SAMs.

Schoolchildren among 80 killed in fireball after truck explodes in Nigeria

« Previous « PreviousNext » Next »View GalleryPublished Date: 11 October 2009
By Nicholas Christian
SCHOOLCHILDREN in a minibus were among up to 80 people burned to death when a fuel tanker truck exploded in Nigeria, reportedly after a policeman fired a shot to keep passers-by away from a road accident.

The truck hit a pothole and overturned on Friday on the Onitsha to Enugu road in the south of the country, spilling its cargo of petrol.

Several people said the truck exploded when a policeman fired his gun in the air. One witness said people had been trying to scoop up and recover the spilled petrol. At least five minibuses, packed with up to 18 passengers each, and two cars were incinerated by the fireball.

"Immediately the policeman shot into the air, the tanker burst into flames that engulfed other vehicles close by and also trapped some of the people that were gathered around the scene who were not fast enough to escape," a witness told The Nation newspaper.

Another anonymous onlooker said: "We were standing nearby and could do nothing while these little children burnt to ashes due to the level of heat that was coming from the fire."

Anambra State road safety director Ben Ekenna admitted local roads were in a bad state and was quoted as saying that, "if something isn't done quickly, tragedies like this will happen again". Accidents on Nigeria's poorly maintained inter-city roads are common, with trucks habitually driving at breakneck speeds.

Nigerian newspapers are filled daily with images of overturned trucks, flooded or collapsed roads and massive potholes. Almost everything in Nigeria, including petrol and oil , are transported by road because of a lack of rail infrastructure, increasing the possibility of accidents. Federal road safety body FRSC says that around 400 people are killed in road accidents every month in Nigeria.

When he was elected in May 2007, President Umaru Yar'adua promised to improve road and rail transport in the country of 140 million people. Last June, a road safety expert said Nigeria needed to treat the carnage on its roads as a national emergency.

Apollos Jediel, a coordinator of the National Emergency Management Agency, said: "We are daily being confronted by an epidemic that kills and maims on the scale of major infectious diseases like malaria, tuberculosis and HIV/Aids."

In addition, the oil-rich country often has domestic fuel shortages, making tanker spills dangerously attractive to poor Nigerians.

EA owns Bioware now
EA makes more revenue from PS3 than 360, as indicated in their last fiscal year financial reports.

Bioware (devs. of Mass effect) , for whatever reason, seem to like Playstation.
Back when Kotick ( CEO of Activision )was whining about PS3's price and threating to drop support Bioware was actually backing Sony up.

Then there's this.
"Speaking to VideoGamer.com, vice president of entertainment and miscellaneous at BioWare, and vice president of Electronic Arts, Greg Zeschuk, said that the team's found developing on the PS3 "exciting", and even has its advantages."

one funny thing "Bioware Doesn't Deny PS3 Mass Effect" it has never did!

Try not to act surprised when they announce it coming to PS3 grin

AS for valve, they are just a lazy developers, i think i saw a listings recently asking for people who can develop on the ps3! So left for Dead is also a posibility

MGS rising, would not be as good as MGS4, cos Hideo Kojima is NOT actively involved in it, the smaller boys are the one actually working it, and they are not using the MGS4 engine. Hideo kojima team is actively involved in MGS; peace maker for the psp. and besides XBOX360 COULD not possibly get MGS5, cos it can't even handle MGS4! grin MGS; rising is just an action game and not a tactical action game, to me it just like a DLC,

As for Tekken, we saw it coming, Capcom has actually lost it this gen, THEY ve not really showed us anything brilliant, RESIDENT EVIL 5 ACTUALLY LOOKED LIKE plastic, honestly! I have lost hope in capcom, unless they give me ONIMUSHA or a remake of DINO CRISES 2 (ps1)
Ah, everyone's favourite fake gamer - Kosovo!
Here, let me correct some of your BS before you mislead others

1. Multiplatform games sell better on the Xbox 360 than the PS3.
2. Konami has said MGS: Rising will look a lot better than MGS 4. Don't tell me you still believe that crap that Sony fanboys handed out?
3. Gears of War will not come out on PS3. It's an Xbox 360 exclusive.

You know NOTHING about games, and it's not even funny. You even think Tekken is made by Capcom? Every schoolboy knows it's made by NAMCO, not Capcom.

By the way, Capcom has been one of the most profitable companies from this current gen cycle. Apart from Resident Evil 5, there's also Street Fighter 4 - which is downright amazing!
Also, the buzz on the internet is that Resident Evil 5 looks better than MGS 4 grin

And certain brainless assumptions should not be made without thinking! Several newspapers reported that people were scooping fuel from the accident zone. No one mentioned that it was the passengers. And all agree on the timeline - the tanker did not explode instantly.

Why would anyone willingly remain in a vehicle driving through a region heavily charged with fuel vapour, rich in the extremely combustible fuel-air mixture?

When i'm driving beside a tanker that's still in good condition, i try as much a possible to get as far away from the tanker as possible. if i see any tanker on it's side with fuel spilling out, i'll abandon my car and run as far away as possbile.
In 2000, i entered lagos for the first time, with only written directions to Alaba. I did not know ANYWHERE in Lagos, all i knew was i was supposed to take a bus from Volks bus stop to benin. As soon as a tanker nearby ran into a ditch, i took off. There i was, running even though i did not know anywhere in lagos.
I take my personal safety seriously, and i suggest we Nigerians all learn to do the same.
