The Law field is saturated in the US, even American lawyers are lamenting You better ditch your law degree if you coming to the US and look to start afresh in IT or medical field. If you did not go to a prestigious law school and have good connections coming to the US to practise law is a total waste of time, don't let no one deceive you.

Is the observation based on statistics or hearsay?

Your number one problem will be your accent, then your degree is from Nigeria.
No judge want to listen to you when you have a thick accent that will be difficult for him or her to understand.
Nobody want to hire you to represent them on a case, I am talking from experience.
The only thing most foreign people with a law degree do is to become an IMMIGRATION LAWYER.

My Experience:
I went to court to dispute a ticket giving to me by a cop. When they called my name which was difficult for the person calling it I knew I am in trouble,then as soon as I open my mouth to talk the judge ordered everybody in the room to keep quite and said we have someone with accent here. I didn't even talk for 2mins he just told me to go and pay the damn ticket..

2nd experience:
A friend of mine lost a case because she hired a Nigerian man to represent her in court.

Most of our guys here with law degree from Nigeria are mostly into immigration cases.

I completely disagree with you on all the points outlined in your post.

There are high profile people with accent in the American society. Arnold Schwarzenegger has a accent and was the governor of California. I know of a mayor who had immigrated to the US from Haiti as an adult and has a French accent. There are countless of university professors, teachers, police officers with foreign accent. Why would a lawyer with a accent be treated differently ? In 2003, Jean Chrétien was the prime minister of Canada. He spoke English with a very thick French accent and Canada is mostly English.

No judge will make a ruling on the basis of someone's accent. In the case of your traffic ticket, You just didn't have strong arguments to convince the judge that the cop was wrong. In the case where it is your words against the cop's words, the cop will always prevail.

You further indicate that your friend lost his case in court because he hired a Nigerian lawyer with an accent. I guess you don't even have the transcript of yor friend's hearing, you don't have all the facts of your friend's case, but you come on Nairaland to tell the world that your friend lost because of the accent of his lawyer... this conclusion is based on hearsay, based on your friend's opinion and we have no facts.

Its all looking good because it is a case of an immigrant here with several options, I know several people that came as international students' with limited options that had to 'codedly' pull the full time job on the side while schooling, It was no where near easy but today they look back and are thankful they did... While some others gave up studentship and went for some other routes if you know what I mean..

It is all different strokes for different folks

Here we are talking about a permanent resident who has the option not to work full time but to focus on school and family. International students may not have that option.
If I can pay a plane ticket to fly to Europe. Why on earth am I going to use a man made wooden boat?

I treated minimum wage as an option since it was on that, rested her primary question.

There is also a grant part to the Student assistance program that can run in a range of 10 to 20k per year for a new immigrant.

With the information here I won't be stuck on minimum wage for long. I might even land something better if I decide to continue with my field in banking services. I am arming myself against the worst case scenario.
I am already learning some of the courses in the program I plan to go to school for (web development) online,but I have no experience or certificate so studying will not be really difficult, I hope.

If you are planning to go to school, just apply for the Student Assistance Program of your province of residence.
Don't even waste your time with a minimum wage job. Usually the student assistance program will give you enough for your school fees and living expenses. Leave the minimum wage jobs to people with no skills

Like you already know that in this part of the world, the vast majority of employers do not really care about your grades.. Not even for college degrees. No class of degree is even written on certificates..

You may learn a subject just for the sake of getting a passing grade and Then forget all after the test or you may learn something to be an expert in the subject.
And the difference will be revealed during the job interview

It is very tough to revoke citizenship; That will be the state against the Immigration Services. The second scenario is one of those very likely. And most reasons they will revoke your citizenship will automatically make you ineligible for receiving a visa especially US visa because it will be considered Crime Involving Moral Turpitude (CIMT).

In Canada it has been happening a lot. People , especially Asians, have lost their Canadian citizenship because they provided misleading info on citizenship applications with respect to the amount of time spent in Canada before becoming a citizen.

As I said it is very unlikely Arobee24 is a terrorist given that the most common ground for citizenship revocation in Canada has been the use of misleading info on the citizenship application

He was most likely living and working in Nigeria while he was a permanent resident of Canada instead of living in Canada.

OP, I don't mean to discourage you but I have read so many horror stories of some Indians and Africans going to Dubai for work.
Sometimes the company or boss can seize your passport and you find yourself living in a room with 10 other people.

Most likely scenario was that he was a permanent resident of Canada but was living and working in Nigeria. And when he applied for Canadian citizenship he misled the government by indicating he had lived 3 straight years in Canada. Then after that the Canadian government discovered his deceit and revoked his citizenship. This is the common reason many people have lost their citizenship in Canada.

Less likely scenario, he is a terrorist

Then again he can tell us what happened even though it is none of our business

My sister, na true o. I have checked off two certifications out of my planned three since I got here, the final outstanding one being the toughest. Preparing for it made me realize I may not be cut out for full time study at this time and it is not as if I need the college certificate. Just wanted to broaden my knowledge and use it to pass time till I am ready to look for work. However, I found out from networking that I was already marketable the way I was, so I thought why delay the inevitable (which is to work eventually) and also suffer in the process?

There are Student Assistance Programs in every Canadian provinces and territories.

The calculation also requires some additions and that was the point I was trying to make earlier. As tight as it already appears, it is not complete as children come with their own set of expenses - minder (if applicable), after school activities and even the ones they will ask you to pay in school, clothes and shoes to buy as they grow etc . All these should also be factored into the calculation to help her make an informed decision.

I was thinking under the same line as well.
With children there are always unpredictable expenses.
Not to forget birthdays. Each time a child is invited to a classmate's birthday, the child has to carry a gift for that classmate.
