CultureRe: Myth or Reality: Yoruba is closer to the Edos culturally than the East is. by Ufeolorun(m): 7:07pm On Feb 05, 2012
exotik:
by mere looking at the location of edo in nigeria, it is not difficult to understand why edo cannot be said to the closer to yoruba without being close to igbo. edo is right in the middle of the east and west of southern nigeria. and edo enjoyed empire status for over 400 years(?) until it was dismantled by the british a little over a hundred years ago, and that is not even up to half the time edo was an empire. so instead of yorubas and igbos to appreciate the similarities between them, they keep fighting over pettiness and celebrate their differences while claiming to be share similarities with edo.  errr, it doesnt work that way. edo is in this unique position because of its location and the authority it once commanded.

now, unlike the yorubas, oduduwa is not the alpha and omega of the edo people. before oduduwa, edo had developed a monarchical system of govt for centuries and they had over 30 ogisos before oduduwa, and it was this monarchial system of govt that oduduwa took ife and i guess everybody already knows the edo version of oduduwa. the yorubas rejected the edo version of oduduwa and opted for the mythical one or the one from somewhere in arabia.

now granted edo had a connection with the yoruba intially but the growth of edo did not stop there. edo started growing as an empire during reign of oba ewuare who was the 12th or so oba and by the reign of oba esigie, edo grew into igbo areas with by establishing a monarchial system of govts all the way to present day onitsha through eze chime and i guess everybody knows the edo version of eze chime but the igbos rejected the edo version and opted for the eastern version, although, they didnt stretch their version all the way to the far far east in arabia but ended somewhere around imo/abia grin grin

but looking at edo today, though it had connection with yoruba people earlier, and it also had connection with igbos later and that is why the edo culture mirrors both east and west, and in recent time mirrors the north due to islamic influence from the north. and that is why we are neither hausa, igbo or yoruba . . . but edo.
400 years and where was it located? in your village?biggest faffing man.
I don't know how long the british empire lasted,I don't think its upto 400 but the signs are there through the spread of english language from America to Australia, the spanish and massive south america.
I respect your culture but stop the constant lousy embellishment, even in edo state how many languages do 'ye' have there. You couldn't have spent 400 years and yet your influence is restricted to some areas around you.
I don't think OYO lasted 400 but from Ajase to Kabba, borgu the influence is unmistakable.
Come on!
Lagos,Ogun,Oyo,Osun,Kwara,Ekiti,Ondo, kogi,Ajase,Borgu?,having same cultural identity: the population, the land mass.

@topic
The main reason for this topic isn't necessarily the ops love for Edo,its basically another avenue to look for childish arguments.

I am not discouraging it,really, just felt he needs to give an insight into why he is considering ICAN after ACCA.A strong local accountancy body is very necessary for the development of members and the profession at large.Whether ican is doing enough, thats another thing.
Maybe worth doing who knows wink for reasons i stated in my last comment and above

@Ufeolorun,

Your response made me LOL because I plan to gain ICAN qualification after my ACCA (writing my final papers this year).

To be honest I know I will not really learn anything new in the conventional sense. . . but perhaps just to satisfy the nationalist in me.

It's one thing I plan on doing and somehow I can't explain exactly why.

It only makes sense in my head.
PoliticsRe: Southwest Governors Seek Better Allocation From Federation Account. by Ufeolorun(m): 10:25pm On Feb 03, 2012
DaLover:
lets look at the implications of what you are asking for.
The FG makes its main cash from royalties of crude sales, you want states to handle more responsibilities abi? To what extent? Is it just enuf for the SW states to manage power and ports but not enuf for the 9ja delta states to handle their oil fields? I would like assume you r not that selfish, i would like to assume that you not one of the evil ba5tards that insist on perpetuating this form of corruption,
Lets assume that both the SW and the 9ja delta handle the ports, power and oil fields etc,
then oil and oil products sold by 9ja delta states should be at market rates, gas to power the power solutions should be at market rates and taxes will be paid to FG, but then you also asked for increased money, is that money going to come from the tax paid by the 9ja delta states to the FG? Will the 9ja states be paying tax so that it can be shared to other states?
Y not start using ur brains instead, i think thats the way forward.
What exactly are you going on about gan sef!you keep straddling threads chatting about oil this oil that, stop the oil-hugging attitude njare! hen.
If you had to put your back into cultivating the oil you probably be suicide bombing the so called parasites by now grin.
It's a big joke if you think crude oil value chain will also be subject of resource control. smiley

Has laulau Aregbesola even gone back home from Lagos from where he governs Osun by remote control yet? How can such a useless governor demand more money from the FG? He was the one who claimed only in December that he doesn't need any allocation from the FG, because he could generate much more from yams; so it is the height of hypocrisy for him to do a full about turn to ask for more.

Why are these governors so mentally lazy, laulau and useless?

They seriously need to stop waffling,if they are really serious about changing things how much of the 'booty' received so far have been used properly, how much resources have been devoted to Agriculture and education(our strong points).
There's no western region, there's  the  west and the former midwest! What's the point of always kissing up to people who view your actions with huge suspicion, the governors need to really sit down and stop faffing about. They should use that energy on kicking pdp out of  Kwara.Kwara to me is far more strategic and important to the commonwealth but how well are they doing in the  states they have already.
What's  happening to Olokola FTZ port that maybe give far more benefit to Ogun/Ondo,they need to sort that out.
Those who refer to us as parasite may actually have a point now if those who are supposed to chart a new course for our people are beginning to sound confused(though the oil doesn't belong to baba enikan!). They are looking more like Pdp to me!It's so unacceptable cos they have all proved themselves in their personal lives.

When the Action congress released a statement about this same issue it was described as another Yoruba opposition to the desire of the' Niger-delta' to control their God given resources.
I guess the itsekiris are being used to pursue 'Yoruba agenda'.
If this goes through maybe Lagos state should  also pick up OPC boys train them and fully kit them up with arms and make them water-bourne
Ondo should follow suit and re-arm the Ilaje and ikales, for the Itsekiris experience should be key indicator. This arrangement is absolutely unacceptable!

We are now getting so overwhelmed with shadow-chasing everywhere!,some will blame Hausa-fulani/core north for their problems while ignoring the highly probable connivance of their local leaders, others would shout Boko haram is killing our people and still  they continue to hug this same government that has failed to protect its citizen,at least try to!.

I am personally getting really disappointed in some of the senators from my sphere, they just went into the senate and they vanished save for tepid statements they make at times,( and you hear some people shouting Oduarepublic, its a non -starter with the kind of leadership we have at the moment, seriously).
We just blame this man at Aso rock but our senators are bigger failures.
PoliticsRe: Oando Denies Benefiting From Oil Subsidy, Claims N4bn Outstanding by Ufeolorun(m): 5:16pm On Jan 30, 2012
According to him, Oando accounted for 53 per cent of petrol importation in 2006 and 47 per cent of subsidy payment. He, however, stated that the company’s market share in terms of subsidy receipts and petrol importation dropped to 11 per cent in 2011 due to proliferation of companies that participated in the PSF scheme.
He said the scheme was abused when companies that did not have retail outlets and storage facilities were allowed to participate in the importation business, at the detriment of companies that built capacity.
huh huh
The Petroleum Support Fund (PSF) expected that there would be under-recovery. For example, when the landing cost was higher than the pump price, the government owed us money, which is paid as subsidy. When there is over-recovery, that is, when the landing cost is less than the pump price, we pay back to the government. For example, during the Yar’Adua administration, when the petrol price was N65 and the crude oil price dropped to $50 per barrel, the marketers paid back to the fund. I remember that Oando paid  N1.6 billion back to the Federal Government,” he said
huh huh

Oando as a private firm owes none of you any responsibility save for CSR,what you should do is to hold your disgraceful and utterly clueless politicians to account for their stewardship.
Oando may write their accounts as much as they want, its the responsibility of those who are handing out subsidy cash to have records/schedules of payment made and to whom.

Nigerian businesses do a lot of dodgy and unacceptable stuffs to stay in business cos of the lax regulatory environment but on this subsidy issue, face the Government you all voted for and leave the businesses alone.

Hi 9jaluv,
Setup of accounting system might be different but still follows the same accounting principal.
Well you maybe right if the system is tailored or your are using a spreadsheet(gives you room to be creative) but standard software like sage financial controller is a one size fit all system.
Jarus:
Software acquisition and implementation costs are to be treated as Tangibles. They are to be warehoused into an a/c, possibly work-in-progress, and upon completion of the project, amortised over 5 years(i.e 20 percent per annum). i think the SAS on Tangibles, R and D cover it.
I think its a 2 step approach:
1.You got to meet the frame work criteria of what an asset is.
2.Separating what qualifies as research (revenue treatment) from what is development (capital treatment),this has got some further annoying criteria as well.
