The Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has vowed to totally lock down all parts of the state, calling on Rivers People to expect more tough times as the battle against Coronavirus continues. " ..... we should all be prepared to go through more stringent measures, including a possible total statewide lockdown, if the situation so compels, in the days and weeks ahead." He however added that only more patience and strict obedience and observerance of all established measures will make him not to completely lock down Rivers State. "However, we may not get to this drastic point if we exercise more patience and strictly obey and observe all established measures, including the rules, behavioural protocols and restrictions on lockdowns and social distancing". Gov.Wike stated this in a state wide broadcast on Monday monitored by Bittertruth Media. The Governor also announced that all Almajiris will be sent back to their respective states. "We have also directed the Commissioner of Social Welfare to round-up and deport all vagrants, including the almajiris, to their States of origin to protect our people from the threat they present to the transmission of this pandemic." Also, Gov.Wike announced the extension of the earlier declared lockdown to more parts of the state. Bittertruth Media recalls that the lockdown was part of measures to halt the spread of Coronavirus in the State. The new areas affected by the lockdown include: (i) Elekahia, including the entire stretch of Rumukalagbor-Elekahia link road; (ii) Rumuomasi, including Stadium road; and (iii) Rumuobiokani. Gov.Wike said " all residents in these areas must stay at home. All shops, mini-markets, officesand business outfits in these areas must also cease to operate until further notice". He added that "Landlords in these areas must take personal responsibility to enforce this lockdown as we will not hesitate to pull down any commercial building or structure that opens to business in violation of this specific directive". He blamed the decision on non or passive compliance with the earlier measures. The Governor frowned at sabotage by security agencies who have allowed people to come into and leave Rivers State. Gov.Wike revealed the plan of his Government to inaugurate a Taskforce to monitor the borders of the state. "Furthermore, we can no longer tolerate the situation where security personnel allow people to leave or enter the State in spite of the closure of our boundaries with other States. These unscrupulous security officers are deliberately putting our State and the lives of our people at risk as our health system can hardly cope, should there be a surge in COVID-19 cases. To contain this threat therefore, we will be inaugurating the State’s Taskforce on Border Closure on Tuesday, April 28, 2020 to effectively monitor our boundaries and ensure that no unauthorized person and or vehicle leaves or enters our State under any guise in breach of the lockdown order." On the current state of the Coronavirus pandemic in Rivers State, Gov.Wike said: "As at yesterday, 26th April 2020, Rivers State had 6 confirmed cases of COVID-19, with 2 fully recovered and discharged, 2 confirmed deaths, while 2 are active and presently receiving treatment in our isolation and treatment centre at Nchia General Hospital, Eleme." © https://bittertruthmedia.com/2020/04/27/gov-wike-vows-to-totally-lockdown-rivers-state-sends-almajiris-to-their-states/

Pope Francis on this Easter Sunday has called for the reduction or forgiveness of the debt of poor nations suffering in the face of the coronavirus pandemic. In his live-streamed message, he said: “May all nations be put in a position to meet the greatest needs of the moment through the reduction, if not the forgiveness, of the debt burdening the balance sheets of the poorest nations”. Pope Francis also prayed for those killed and suffering from a novel coronavirus that has killed more than 100,000 people globally. “Today my thoughts turn in the first place to the many who have been directly affected by the coronavirus: the sick, those who have died and family members who mourn the loss of their loved ones, to whom, in some cases, they were unable even to bid a final farewell,” the pope said in a live-streamed message from an empty Saint Peter’s Basilica. The Head of the Church used his Easter sermon to also called for an “immediate” ceasefire in global conflict and urged European nations to show “solidarity” in the face of a coronavirus pandemic that has claimed more than 109,000 lives worldwide. “May Christ our peace enlighten all who have a responsibility in conflicts, that they may have the courage to support the appeal for an immediate global ceasefire in all corners of the world,” the Pope said. Pope Francis urged Europe, which he described as his “beloved continent”, to “rise again, thanks to a concrete spirit of solidarity” similar to that shown after World War II. © https://bittertruthmedia.com/2020/04/12/easter-pope-francis-demands-debt-forgiveness-for-poor-nations/

Amidst rumoured link of the dreaded Coronavirus to the 5G technology, the federal government says no licence has been issued for the use of the new technology in Nigeria. This was stated by the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, in a statement he personally signed on Saturday. The statement reads in full below: The attention of my office has been drawn to the public concern about the health implications of the deployment of Fifth Generation Mobile Networks (5G) in Nigeria. Based on available records at my office and the earlier report received from the regulator, I would like to clarify as follows: i. The National Frequency Management Council (NFMC), of which I am the Chairman, has not deliberated on or released any bulk frequency spectrum for the deployment of 5G; ii. No license has been issued for the deployment of 5G in the country; iii. A 3-month study trial commenced on the 25th of November, 2019 in order to critically review and study the health and security implications of deploying 5G in Nigeria; iiii. As part of the study trial process, I directed the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to ensure that a team of experts, security agencies and other stakeholders fully participate in the trial process and my office also invited these agencies to participate in the trial; and v. The trial process has been concluded and the study and reporting process is currently ongoing. His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, places a premium on the welfare, health and security of Nigerians. As such, our desire for technological advancement will never be at the expense of the health and welfare of our citizens. Government will not act on the speculations only, but rather we will take an informed decision on 5G after due consultation with experts and the public. I have also directed the NCC to engage citizens on any questions or concerns they may have regarding 5G. I wish to thank the general public for reaching out to us on this issue. We advise you all to remain rest assured that government will always take the welfare, health and security of the public into account while considering the deployment of any technology. The global pandemic of Coronavirus has killed another Nigerian. This is second death from coronavirus (COVID-19) in the country. The death was confirmed on Monday by the Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire, during the Presidential Task Force Briefing on COVID-19 in Abuja, the nation’s capital. Ehanire confirmed also that Nigeria has 111 confirmed cases of COVID-19, adding that a majority of them were persons who came in from overseas. According to the health minister, the highest number of confirmed cases are in Lagos and Abuja because they serve as the major gateways to the country. Ehanire warned Nigerians to protect the elderly among them, as well as those having underlying health issues as they were the most vulnerable. He also informed the gathering that all retired but able-bodied staff of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and the Federal Ministry of Health were being recalled. In his remarks, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha, said President Muhammadu Buhari has constituted a committee headed by the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, to care for the economic challenges that the situation may bring for the time being. He also allayed the fear of Nigerians, saying workers in the financial institutions were not included in the stay-at-home order declared by the President in his Sunday broadcast to the nation. He further said that the briefing would be a daily event to minimise the incidence of fake news in the country. The national leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has proffered pieces of advice to Muhammadu Buhari led federal government on how to handle the economic effects of the coronavirus pandemic. The 9 points were contained in his 68th birthday message. The former Lagos State Governor urged the federal government to consider his economic action plans should coronavirus mortally threatens our economy. The 9 points are as below: 1. MAINTAIN GOVERNMENT EXPENDITURES: The natural instinct will be to reduce spending. Such reductions may be prudent for individuals and households. For government to move in this direction only feeds economic carnage by amplifying economic hardship. Prudent fiscal policy is generally “countercyclical.” As the private sector shrinks, government does more. At minimum, the federal government must stick to its naira budgetary expenditures. In fact, government should increase Naira expenditures by at least 10 – 15 percent during an emergency. Allocations to state and local governments should be included in this addition. If not, we risk subnational recessions in important sections of the country. 2. GOVERNMENT PROJECTS: If the virus is largely kept from becoming a widespread public health menace, government should accelerate spending and actual work on key infrastructural projects particularly regarding transportation. This will lower costs while bolstering the economy by generating employment and business activity. If the virus does become a large-scale public health challenge, more funds should be allocated to the health sector. 3. TAX REDUCTIONS: Government should announce a tax credit or partial tax reduction for companies or firms. VAT should be suspended for the next 2-4 months. This will help lower import costs and protect against shortages. 4. FOOD SECURITY: We need to protect the people from food shortages and high prices. As such, we must quickly improve farm-to-market delivery of agricultural produce. Also, government should initiate a crash program to decrease spoilage of agricultural produce by construction of storage facilities in local marketplaces in and around major cities and towns throughout the country. We must establish a strategic grain reserve. Government should help ensure supply by establishing minimum premium price for certain food products. 5. LOWER INTEREST RATES: CBN should lower interest rates to spur borrowing and private sector activity. 6. QUANTATIVE EASING: CBN and other financial regulators should be alert to signs of fragility in the financial markets and banking sector. The Central Bank should be prepared to enact extraordinary measures should the financial sector exhibit stress. The CBN should be prepared to give banks liberal access to its loan discount window to ensure adequate liquidity within the banking sector. The Cash Reserve Requirement for banks should be revised downward. Also to ensure liquidity, the CBN should be willing to expand its balance sheet and improve liquidity by purchasing government bonds and other instruments held by banks and other institutions. The Nigerian stock market is falling. CBN and others should be planning how they might intervene to prevent a potential run on the stock market. Potential measures include expanding Quantitative Easing to enable the Central Bank to purchase strategically important instruments trading in the stock market and instituting a moratorium on margin calls. 7. EXCHANGE RATE: The Corona crisis will shrink the inflow of dollars. Hopefully, this is temporary, no more than a few months. CBN can allow some downward pressure on the naira without energetically intervening to defend the exchange rate. Only if and when the rate seems that it might dip precipitously should the CBN intervene. The Bank may want to revisit its decision prohibiting non-institutional Nigerian dollar holders from participation in Open Market Operations. Greater leniency will bring more dollars into the CBN. 8. DEBT SUSPENSION: If economic trouble does come, government must be willing to freeze payment of certain consumer-related private debts. Evictions, foreclosure and light and water cut-offs might have to be suspended. Suspension or partial reduction of payment of school fees for our most indigent families must be considered (that is when schools reopen) while government offers temporary support to the schools themselves. 9.INCREASE STIPENDS TO THE POOR: We must be ready to increase stipends to the poor. We do this by widening the net, substantially increasing the number of recipients of anti-poverty stipends. “In conclusion, I proffer these measures not as some comprehensive solution. ” I hope these ideas spark needed dialogue about the ways we may need to employ to protect our nation from assault by the coronavirus. “I do not know if such a confrontation shall come. “What I do know is that wise preparation will carry us close to victory. “Unity, compassion and brave implementation of good policy will take us the rest of the way home”. “We shall not go down. We shall rise”, he said. Source: https://bittertruthmedia.com/2020/03/28/tinubu-lists-9-economic-actions-to-tackle-economic-effects-of-covid-19/

Some Nigerians have lambasted the General Overseer of Living Faith Church Worldwide, Bishop David Oyedepo for recently launching a Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) code to collect monies in different categories from his members. This move by the church follows the recent restriction on religious gatherings by the Federal and state governments over the global pandemic of Coronavirus in Nigeria. Bittertruth Media recalls that Winners Chapel had reportedly disobeyed the government's ban and held church services with crowded members against the social distancing order of the government. The short code, Bittertruth Media gathered serves as means of collecting offerings, tithes, Shiloh offerings, transportation seeds, Thanksgiving etc. This replaces the normal monies collected during the now banned Sunday church services by Winners Chapel. Angered by the move, some Nigerians blasted Bishop Oyedepo for not even considering the Coronavirus pandemic situation to safe Nigerians from further impoverishment. The Church was yet to react to the outcry as at press time. There is a strong indication that lawmakers in Cameroon may be at a great risk of having contacted the dreaded Coronavirus. This follows the confirmation that their 80 years old President of the National Assembly since 1992, Cavayé Yéguié Djibril has tested positive for coronavirus. Bittertruth Media gathered that Elder Djibril had returned from France, and disobeyed Cameroon's Health Ministry’s 14-day quarantine policy, potentially endangering 167 Parliamentarians (MPs). It is unclear as at press time, whether all the affected MPs have taken to self-isolation or not. However, Bittertruth Media reports that as at Monday, the total number of COVID-19 cases in Cameroon had risen to 56, with 16 positive cases; nine were from Douala, six in Yaounde and one in Bafoussam. Rivers State Governor, Barr.Nyesom Wike, has got an order from the National Industrial Court, barring the organised labour in the state from embarking on an indefinite strike action. Bittertruth Media recalls the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC and its affiliate unions in Rivers State had threatened to commence industrial action this Monday. However, the State Government which labour accused of highhandedness, failure to pay the new national minimum wage, pensioners and poor welfare of workers among other grievances surprisingly used the instrumentality of the judiciary to desperately stop labour from continuing with its earlier threatened strike. It is unclear if the organised labour in Rivers State will obey the court order and stop its planned strike. As at press time, labour was yet to react to the court order which was secured Monday evening. There are fears that the embattled son of former vice president, Atiku Abubakar, Muhammed Abubakar, who is now positive to the dreaded Covid-19, might have actually infected many other persons who he has had contacts with. This follows his refusal to have earlier isolated himself after returning from abroad. One of those who had a contact with him is the Bauchi State Governor, Bala Muhammed. The governor in a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media, Mukhtar Gidado, said that he met Atiku’s son on an Aero Contractors’ flight recently and even shook hands with him. As a result of the contact, Gov.Muhammed, stated that he had gone into self-isolation in line with the directive of the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control. Gov.Bala also added that all his close aides have also taken to self-isolation. Meanwhile, Bittertruth Media gathered that the refusal of Atiku's Son to have isolated himself might have put many persons at risk as he had visited several places and mingled with many persons. It was further gathered that he had clubbed with friends alongside his wife at Play Lounge, Wuse 2, and later attended Juma'at on Friday in Abuja. This automatically places persons who were at those venues at greater risk of contacting the virus and may lead to increase in the number of positive cases from Abuja in days ahead. Sources close to him reveal that it took the intervention of residents of his estate who reportedly called the police who in conjunction with the NCDC forcefully came to evacuate him to Gwagwalada Specialist Teaching Hospital, from where his sample was taken and later confirmed to be positive. Meanwhile, Atiku in an earlier tweet on Monday had solicited prayers for his sick son. A group of youths from the Bayelsa State chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) under the auspices of National Youth Rebirth Forum, on Tuesday, staged a protest demanding the expulsion of Mr. Timi Alaibe from the party. The protest is coming amidst sustained legal battle by the former NDDC Boss to reclaim the seat of power in Bayelsa State from the incumbent, Senator Douye Diri. Bittertruth Media recalls that Mr.Alaibe in his pre-election suit is asking the court to void Diri’s nomination and he (Alaibe) be declared the winner of the PDP primary election. According to him, the primary election that produced Diri as PDP candidate breached the provisions of the party’s constitution. Angered by that move by Mr.Alaibe, the members of the group who stormed the Abuja national secretariat of the party, accused Alaibe of being an active member of the All Progressives Congress (APC). The group carried various placards in support of Senator Douye Diri, the new governor of Bayelsa State. Meanwhile judgment is expected in the case of Mr.Alaibe against the PDP and Senator Diri this Tuesday.
