Iwerebor:
Hi all,
Looking at the newly released result of BENUE CEMENT COMPANY and in retrospect WAPCO Lafarge tells me that all may not be well with the BUILDING MATERIALS sector.

Ashaka cement is yet to release it's result and they will anytime soon. This particular company presented a very good buy opportunity due to selling pressure last week and I think many CICOers may have swooped on it, so I am advising against complacency. For some reason I don't want to hold that stock when the result breaks, so the next week's trading sessions should be very critical for me.
All caveats observed!
The sector is facing myriads of challenges. Most of them took up an expnasion/refurbishment programe at the same time. Out of all of them Ashaka is the BEST except that they've refused to expand the facility. They've invested in energy (power generation) and upgraded some machines.

Not sure if I've shared thsi story on this forum before.

A man went to a Juju man to do a charm so that he will not die in a motor accident. Confident of this his charm, the man always drive recklessly on the road. Other road users concluded that he must surely be a mad man so they always grant him the right of way and practically move of the road to allow him pass. This basically made him to believe more in the efficacy of the charm

Another man went and did the same charm. He also was doing the same thing as per his drving. Wel, not long after, the two men met and none was willing to give each other way. of course each of them believe that he can not die in an accident. So at full throtttle, they had an head on collision and the rest is better imagined.

That you do the 'wrong' thing and get away with it foes not make it 'right'

Afroil and Capital oil are so funny companies!!! Who bought into them? How was the transaction done? Where is teh turn around plan? When last did they announce any result on the exchange?

AP and Big Treat are different at least we know what they are doing and they are releasing results. Even Nigeria Wire and Cable better pass them.

One thing that is also obvious is all the insider dealings!!! That is a real abuse that should be corrected

On SHORELINE, Kola Karim has a plan to be the major investor in the construction industry except the CEMENT industry. Many more acquisitions in the making. Bear in mind that the guy is less than 40.

One of his friends (a colleague) told me about the Alumaco acquisition. He wanted First Aluminium but could not get in.

Not sure why people are jittery about DSR. Those selling are the speculators who got what they did not expect. The closure date is damn to close for them to do anything. So they know that they ccannot jerk the price up hence the need to sell.

DSR to me is still a GOOD BUY.

@wanajo

i see your point. however the very fact that the IPO was unsuccessful says a lot to me. the mngt took the path of least resistance in going for a loan then, if indeed they did and are now paying for it. the interest has obviously eroded whatever profit they would have made.

Also even if their IPO/PO was unsuccessful, surely some people must have bought into it and i am assuming by unsuccessful u mean it didnt experience the level of oversubscription we are seeing in recent PO/IPO offers of recent memory. Even if it was 25% subscribed, the mngt have yet to show they have effectively put the money to good enough use going by their results.

th ejury is still out for me on polyproducts sha and i hope they do improve their margins.
Poly products did not do a PO. Was only trying to explain how companies have huge turnover but little profit to show for it especially in the manufacturing sector.

Raising equity to fund business is a way out but before now, it was not a successful venture which was why I mentioned First Aluminium and Presco.

I know next to nothing about Poly Products but what I can see is a company positioning itself to raise capital from the market.

If you grow your turnover, it is an evidence that you still have 'business' going.

That your margin is thin indicates that your cost is high. One bit of high operating cost in Nigeria is interest expenses. This is incurred due to lack of working capital. For companies that are has enough reserve/working capital, they have huge interest income. Ashaka cement is a company that is able to pay dividend to its shareholders just from its interest income!!!

@krushh

OMG i just wake up see say e be like say my guy dey vex for me. no be so ooo Krush. i was just engaging in small banter with u last night on poly products. i apologise if u thought i was having a go at u man, far from it.

@ wanajo

on poly products, as i said in a post yesterday, i am sketical of any management with such a large turnover and small results to show for it, makes me think they are not thinking things through especially their business plans. why go for a loan (if thats what they did) to run a business but shot yourself in the foot with the interest rate? not cool. i am assuming they do have a viable business product but their plans arent being produced by effective enough management, but befroe i write them off let me give them a little mor time, like another quarter or two before concluding. ther's no sense in rushing
Go back to some three years ago, how many offers were successful? Presco IPO was not successful that's how IBTC got itself on its board as the underwriter. Same thing with First Aluminium. Hence most of such 'small' companies went for the loan option. With the unwillingness of banks to lend for the long term then, most of the companies had to go for overdraft or working capital type of loan. Even BIG companies like Wapco were not spared.

The management may look stupid now (out of hindsight)!!! I actually feel that they might have made a loss but are planning for an offer or maybe a core investor is coming in.
InvestmentRe: Stock Market Tips For Nigerians by wanaj0: 7:48am On Mar 18, 2008
Krrush:
Agreed."Suspect",not "conclude".

@Wanajo or other ear-to -the -ground guru, fit come now to talk say "outstanding item" or such like, dey for the result.

Hence the needed financial anaysis before crusifixion lipsrsealed
Without seeing the result, most likely problem will be inadequate working capital thus leading to using overdraft to do business which inevitably led to the company paying banks. Result will likely be an AGM were a resolution will be passed to raise funds from the capital market instead of raising funds from banks.

The N1.5bn na turnover (value of goods sold over the year) not working capital. How much did they use to produce those goods? How much of that money was sourced from banks @ 20% interest rate? Add that to the personnel cost, distribution cost and other costs of production? Now look at the taxes that they have to pay etc.

So it is not a matter of mago mago. It is most likely an indication that the company is highly geared and need to raise funds. The potential for profit is huge as evident in the turnover.

For strategic investors, companies like poly products are target for takeover. Imagine buying majority stake in the company at ridiculous price. Do an offer to pay pay back the banks thus reducing the interest expenses. Grow the business and declare a 'jumbo' profit then cashout!!! That's what turnaround companies are all about.

A lot of peeps also like to sell before the dividends are applied because the price will be marked down by the dividend paid and you also have to pay taxes on your dividends so no show there!

I hope he has stopped that nonsense with paying dividends quarterly

I don't want to be drawn into the long term and short term debate!!! Each one of them is good. What you do is a function of your age and your portfolio size.

The younger you are, the higher the risk that you should take. Also the smaller your portfolio, the higher the risk you are willing to take.

If you manage a portfolio of N1bn, you will not be buying Chellarams; Livestock etc. Firstly the units available is not that much, secondly the risk is too much vis avis the returns. That's why major brokers have a list of investible securities!!!!

If I am young and I have a relatively small portfolio, I can invest in stocks without fundamentals and do CICO so as to accelerate the growth of my portfolio while understanding the risk involved.

For the LONG TERMERS, best way to make money is via PP's and good PO's. Right now what we have are over priced PO's. Look @ the NAHCO offer for sale? You make over 1000% within a year!!! Na those kind thing me I like.

Many good PP's are going on now. If you have deep pockets, just move in. Omatek computer is one. Will be selling @ 2.50/share. Zenith and GTB are core investors via the SME financing scheme.

Food Concepts is going on. Not that fantastic. You should however be able to get in at a premium.

With those PP's, you can make 500% easily within a year. You can also get BIG units that if you stay in for 5years, you will be smilling at yourself everyday.

Those with DEEP pockets, don't trade on the floor in reality. Even when they buy shares, they buy below the NSE price because they just got the company to issue shares to them.

For those who are friends on this site, now is the time to collaborate so that you can take positions jointly in some good companies. You can also use the power of leverage that way. You can put 25% of the money down collectively and get 75% financing. Many things are going on now that peeps need to take advantage off.
InvestmentRe: Stock Market Tips For Nigerians by wanaj0: 10:57am On Mar 15, 2008
@ Alll,

For those going fro fundamental less stocks, you need to know the facts behind the figures. Just don't buy anything!!!!

I know that Kola Kareem is buying Alumaco hence the trending up of the price. Capital will be injected and the price will trend up.

A group just bought 40% of IPWA, so the price is definitely going up.

For the person asking about Union Bank, Union bank did well in the past. I enjoyed the 1 for 3 a number of times. Then they were delivering better than First Bank. Now things have changed. They came to the market too early with the rights/PO @ the 20.00 range. Secondly, the management is not forward looking. They no longer have the competitive edge. All the banks now are well capitalised and safe so what attraction does UBN has? They are not growing profit like others. No strategic investment. No niche market. That's the major drawback for UBN!!!

@ Wanaj0.

Do you know if I can still get on the IAA private placement? maybe I could put in some money?
I really don't know again.

IAA did placement @ 2.10 or so for N2.00. which comes to like N0.525 per 50k share. That is already fully allotted. I however learnt that one of the parties to the offer is pushing for supplementary allottment (collected money from people so need to get stocks for them) but IAA is not playing ball because of the potential delay in listing/planned PO.

Now the company I talked about is 'buying' IAA for its client @ N1.20 for 50k for share!!! That is the one that I think is available.
