@ All,

Na wa for Naija OOOO.

Just finished a meeting with a rep of a company (portfolio and fund managers).  I ask them what they do and was told they BUY opportunities. Being hearing abou such but to do I confirmed it.

While everyone was buying Dangote Flour PO, those guys paid 20.00 for the offer and were allotted in FULL. Don't ask me how!!!!!!! That's the opportunity they buy!!!! They charge you 2% of the returns on your portfolio.

Saw the Universal Insurance that they bought at 1.85!!! So basically they buy 'juicy' offers at a premium and are able to maximise opportunities. This is a serious imperfection in the market!!!!!!!

Well, will go and register with them (or get someone to register) so that I can see the opportunities since it will be listed on my statement and I can now BUY those opportunities myself.

Maybe all these HYIP schemes were into this kind of things also.

If you can get IAA, abeg go get am OOOO. Once it is listed, na Maiduguri that one dey go even though the fundamentals na nothing!!!

i do as well, which is why i have hedged my exposure to them by having only core holdings in 2 - crusader and Mbenefit.

i tkae wanajo and roughcut's points on fidelity and union but if u are in them for the long term they can at least do u no harm. i can't comment on breweries because i don't invest in them for personal reasons.
Ecobank and sterling merger is on rocky footing and u mat consider having both as too sweet a cake. if u pushed me on it i would say sell the sterling and leave the ecobank.

Nestle, hmmmm, at what price. look at this chart to help decide
The harm is that OVER diversification reduces your profit!!!! Nothing Union Bank will give that First Bank will not better. With UBA, Zenith, First Bank and GTB you are well covered as far as the banking sector is concerned.

As per teh Barclays Bank ruour, Soludo has made it clear no foreign bank can take over any of the BIg banks (almost all are BIG banks now). So UBN should look for Access to take them over. No way Soludo will allow any Foreign investor to collect 30% of Union Bank!!!! Impossible!!!!!!

@ll,sorry for the diversion but anyone interested in foodconcepts pp can send me an email on opekoya(at )yahoo.co.uk.Have a million naira worth (250,000 units) at 4.60k i was supposed to buy but my check wont clear till monday and it closes today.
This isnt 419,it was supposed to be it but for the problem with my check.you deal direct with the bank(bank draft only) and once again,IT CLOSES TODAY.
I believe that you are not 419 but the person selling to you is  a crook. Official price is 3.90. 70k premium goes to whohuh? The major risk there is that there is no underwriting firm which implies that your money (3.90) can still be refunded due to oversubscription and you will not be able to get the 0.70/share back. Someone offered same to me at 4.40 but I opted out because it is not guaranteed. it is First Capital that is doing this nonsense.

Check teh prospectus, allotment will be done by the directors of Food concepts and not the issuing houses!!! So except you are submiting through the directors of Food Concept, beware!!!

Hello ALL,

I must say i am very happy and privileged to read the daily analysis of the NSE here everyday. I am somewhat a silent reader, 'because our people say a fool is considered wise if he keeps his mouth shut. What I'm just trying to say is that he be like say i be moo moo(and to imagine that I thot i was hot!) as far as this stock thing is concerned and I have honestly learnt a lot more than i could imagine just by reading everything here on a daily basis.

There are too many names to send appreciation to - Aktopgun, thanks for those charts, it looks like they really work for the NSE, you are just wonderful, Blueband, windy wendy, Mr. Risky, Invisible, Easimoni, Yodiyokun, Ioma, Pumping777, the list is inexhuastible.

I need your advice sha!, please help a sister here. I am a long term investor and so when I buy a stock its for keeps. I tried this CICO thing last year, but got my fingers burnt largely due to the stock broker I used then, but honestly I don't think i have the liver for such now.I kind of stopped investing in stocks towards the end of last year for the reason that i felt i needed to reorganise my portfolio, because 85% of my stake in the NSE is in the Banking sector, and the thot of that kind of scares me. So please look at the stocks i am holding unto for now especially the Banking sector and advice me on which i can do away with and reinvest in to another sector of the stock market( I actually do not want to invest any new funds for now, which is why I want to reallign my portfolio).

BANKS
Union Bank average entry 20.44
GT bank entry at 2004 PO price
Sterling Bank entry at 2005 PO price( then magnum bank)
Ecobank entry at 2005 PO price
FBN average entry 36.00
Fidelity entry at 2.30
wema bank entry at 2.40
Intercontinental entry at 2006 PO price
UBA entry at 2007 PO price
Oceanic entry at 2007 PO price
Access entry at 2007 PO price
Zenith Average entry of 13.90 - Have actually placed a sale order on this.

OTHERS
Nigerian Breweries entry 36.91
Unilever entry 13.50
Dangote sugar 2006/07 PO price
May and Baker 2006 PO price
Dangote Flour 2007 PO price
Conoil entry price 72.00

Friends, Which should I sell in the banking sector(i.e. that you do not advice to keep for a long term) and which other stocks in other sectors would be good for the longhaul?

Thanks for your advice.
I will clear out of Union Bank, Wema, Fidelity and Ecobank. There is nothing they will deliver that the other banks will not give. Sterling will just be for speculative purposes.

InvestmentRe: Stock Market Tips For Nigerians by wanaj0: 9:20am On Mar 13, 2008
I am in May and Baker for the long haul. Bought @ 4.00 in 2006

They missed the profit forecast for 2006 and will likley miss also for 2007. However with the vaccine plant up, they should be able to deliver strong performance. They've diversified into the food business. They are now into production of noddles and table water. If they can deliver on the vaccine plant, they should turn out good. So for a 12months to 18months duration, I will go with them.

shigidi:
@ wanajo, do you see may and baker as a potential 35 naira stock by its year endhuh? i know they are good but how much growth can they acheive this year.
I don't have a crystal ball so cannot say whether it will reach 35.00. I however believe that tehre is good upside once the interim 2008 results start to hit the news stand.

stocknrock:
Oga wanaj0. abeg wetin u think?

I'm thinking of selling my UAC-Prop after 5% gain after commision to enter UnionDicon for a quick CICO and maybaker for the long haul. what do you think?
Union Dicon is good for CICO but whack as far as fundamental is concerned. When last did they release result? The last result was even qualified by the auditor. Since then the directors were practically on each others neck.

UAC properties is not that fantastic. But a 10% gain doing CICO may not be bad!
InvestmentRe: Stock Market Tips For Nigerians by wanaj0: 8:10am On Mar 13, 2008
On May and Baker, if you are in for the long run, stick with it!!!!

FG sold the vaccine company at yaba to them. So they have the market for 40% of all Vaccines in Nigeria.

Yes the PE is high for end year 2007. Basically because they allotted more shares than they planed for during the last PO, money from the PO was not received on time which led to project slippage.

I expect that teh result for 2008 will be better. I also know that they are better positioned than most of the other companies in that sector. So in terms of fundamentals, May and Baker is solid!!

Sure you made money on your John Holt. Though I suggested it, I did not BUY because it does not fit into my investment plan.

rasputinn:
@ Wanaj0,

I beg to disagree with you that the upside is limited(the exact same thing a broker told me @ the onset of 2007,he was proved wrong eventually
The NSE is a such a unique place;universal parameters and fundamentals that work in other climes don't always work here. Here more often than not, fundamentals go out the window.Whether a company declares a slim dividend(like oasis' 2k i not the issue. In months to come we will notice very unusual price appreciation in most of the stocks,BUT BY THEN WE WILL ALL BE TOO BUSY ENJOYING THE LOOT THAT NO ONE WOULD COMPLAIN)

That reminds me;how many stocks on the NSE are trading @ up to $1?
You don't need to beg to disagree with me.

If you've being in the market long enough, you will know the things that move the market. Most of the movements that you see are 'artificial'. Who are those buying and selling Dangote flour and jerking the price up by 5% veryday until recently? How did you think AP moved up to 300.00? Are you aware that WEMA bank was using its brokerage firms to buy its shares last year so as to jerk it up to 15.00huh The figures will not tell you that but there are facts behind the figures.

You see, I bought NGC at 4.00, bought more at 12.65, now it is at 29.00. So some people expect it to move up to 60.00huh Maybe!!!! The shareholding structure means that it is difficult for them to jerk it up. Shonekan will not sell. NSITF will not sell even if they though na block transaction.

BETA Glass, I bought a long tiem ago when it use to be 5.00. Suggested it again last year when it was between 12.00 - 14.00. So what will make it to reach 50.00? Do you know that their current level of profit is lower than the 2002 profithuh

A fool and his money is soon parted. That's what is happening on NSE. Gullible people are buying. When those jerking up teh price decides to cash out, most people will soon discover that they are buying dead companies!!!

Same with the NOSPETCo etc while people's testimony of making money was use as a confirmation of teh soundness of the business.

Could you please explain the PAR Value term, especially using IAA as an example. Thanks.
Most stocks on the NSE if not all are N0.50 share. That's why you hear of 50k ordinary shares selling @ XX Naira!!!

For IAA, the PP was for N2.00 ordinary share (that's the par value). So to get listed, they will do a 4 for 1 stock split to convert to N0.50 (50k) shares!!!

@ all

For NGC bonus is overdue but can not say if that will be declared. Current price already factor that in. The illiquid nature of the shares is helping the movement of the price. Good company though. Lost grounds in the traditional area but picking up gradually.

Beta Glass, don't know where the news about bonus is coming from. company that is just recovering. turnover is dwindling for a lot of reasons. Can't see the topline growth here.

NASCON, all hype. Nothing to show that they will deliver on promise. Where is the promised dividend on BCC? Not sure why people are believing this company. Thread with serious caution!!!

Rule number one, don't panic.

For stocks still gaining, it is because they are not liquid hence not reacting to the laws of demand and supply. It is basically the major holders pumping the share price up!!

as the market don rise too much, e must fall very much too. as bear/fear enter, people rush out evening closing their positions on fundamental stocks to cover losses elsewhere.

@wanaj0, wendy, pumping, samstone, topgun et al,
regarding all these share-loans,
1. how do the banks protect themselves if the portfolio value of the client falls below the minimum allowed?
2. is there is any other collateral?
3. how much do the banks depend on these sorts of loans. typically what % of their annual profit is this?
4. which banks have the most exposure to this market, i dey fear another sub-prime o
Two ways. Firstly you have some stocks as collateral. Also, the new stocks that you bought are 'domiciled' with them.

It is still a small part of their profit. Not much problem for the banks.

However if what you have is a margin facility, once the value of your collateral falls below a certain threshold, expect a margin call which is more like selling your shares or you bringin in money

Not at all. ACtually this is what makes CICO attractive. Buying opportunities being presented.

However, it is clear now, that money can be lost from the market. That prices don't always go up. That there is the need to understand the market risks and other associated risk and have a plan to hedge against it. Aso provided an oportunity for people to understand structuring your portfolio to minimise impact of such bear runs. also for people to know that spreadsheet profit can disaapear. If you take a look at the charts, the lows are becoming lowers and highs are also lower so thats a general downtrend.
