Mustafa Chike-Obi is a bloody asset manager (A mathematician with a business degree from Stanford who worked as an investment banker)!!! Clout does not cut it in the CBN job. You have to know your onions. I doubt that he is versed in macro and micro economics. He is not a dummy but he would be a misfit as a CBN Governor.

I recall that part of the criticism of Joseph Sanusi's appointment as CBN boss was that he was a chattered accountant. Many professionals in the CBN in his days would tell you how ineffective his appointment was. That was why OBJ searched and brought in Soludo - a professor of economics whose prowess was well known. Sanusi Lamido's appointment could pass for an informed decision because he holds a Bachelors in Economics but even then many still doubted his abilities based on his disconnect from the economists pool of knowledge for years preferring instead to contribute to islamic publications.

I just hope GEJ would do the right thing.

Obviously, you need some schooling on the difference between fiscal policy (government revenue e.g. taxes, tarrifs, duties etc and trade agreements, budget - planning and implementation, debt management, government liquidity etc) and monetary policy (macroeconomics - interest rates, inflation, money supply - controlling the amount of money in circulation, a lender of last resort - this is where banking supervision comes in etc).

In actual fact the job of a CBN Governor goes beyond being able to manage monetary policy, he also has to see to how that policy impacts the economy in the following ways: economic developmental planning, creating new wealth and economic prosperity through SME initiatives etc.

So does anyone here still think that a lawyer, an accountant, a mathematician and a commercial bank CEO can function effectively as the CBN Governor?? The experience of a bank CEO can only help in banking supervision which is just one of many functions of the CBN and I don't just see how knowing how to balance books would help much in that position as well. As for those clamoring for Chike-Obi, you should get it by now that the job is beyond him. I don't know how a mathematician cum investment banker would be able to function as CBN Governor. I am attending business school in the United States and the only economics I know and that is ever taught in business school is Managerial Economics. Experience working in financial services cannot substitute formal schooling and deep knowledge of other aspects of economics. Clout does not cut it either. AMCON was set up to manage toxic bank assets which the banks sold off their books. Running it is an investment banking - asset management job and Mustafa Chike-Obi is undoubtedly a good fit for that but not a CBN Governor.

Everywhere in the world, the position of a central bank chief goes to seasoned economists who have done a lot of work (by work, I mean research) and have contributed to the understanding of the macro and micro variables that drive their local economy. In our case in Nigeria, it would not cut it to go and bring a foreign trained Nigerian economists who is seasoned in western economic theories alone. Whether the person is currently abroad or is based in Nigeria, the occupier of that position should be familiar with the Nigerian economy through and through and should have easily accessible published papers to prove that.

In the this list of 6 names, Dr. Sarah Alade is the only person that can even pass for nomination. She should be critically examined in a pool comprising other candidates. I am tempted to say that we should look among the very bright scholars in the economics departments of our universities.

Well, I don't think the elder statesman did the right thing by ridiculing his appointment in the media. How can he assume that GEJ knew about his battle with prostate cancer? And even if GEJ knew and got a wrong impression of a well managed health condition from their previous meetings, a father like Nwabueze would stop at giving reasons for his inability to chair the committee and recommend a replacement in private and not openly make it look, in the media, like the President lacks brain.

Its hard to believe that Nwabueze spoke in this manner. I want to believe the press twisted the reporting of the interview to embarass GEJ. Some of them get paid by APC folks.

Which Amosun efforts? You think they started that project in 2011? If you are a Nigerian, you will know that these stuffs don't happen within that time frame. It was actually Gbenga Daniel's administration that should take the credit for this and not Amosun. Anyway, government is a continuum so its to the Ogun State government credit irrespective of who is Governor.

The same Governor was a frat man when he was at Ogun State Polytechnic (now Moshood Abiola Polytechnic).

I just pity people who are under the illusion that there is anything progressive in this people. They are all the same whether in PDP, ACN, APC or whatever. They are all "jegudujera"!!!!

OjaP: You all have spoken well. I have learned one or two things from both sides. However, I would say someone who is educated here with a work permit will do well no matter what. If I am not mistaken, many Nigerians who come here for advanced degrees do well after their education. If any one is in doubt, please visit NL USA Student Visa thread. To some extent, I would say plan before coming to America, a Nigerian coming here for school will never regret his/her decision no matter what. For others who fall in other categories, I don't know.

I see that he pasted close pictures of NYC which suggests to me that he lives in NYC. Living and surviving in NYC is harder, just like living in any big city in the world. The good thing about the US is that the opportunities are spread everywhere i.e. the opportunities are not skewed to the lofty states like NY or CA alone.

I have been here for 14 months on a student visa, studying for an MBA in a top school (will graduate in May 2014) and I already have a job offer for a 6 digit annual salary. It didn't come easy and it didn't happen like that for everyone but almost all the guys who came here to study, that I know, have got something doing and they are not watching plates or parking faeces. They have decent jobs! By the way, I am in Columbus City in the state of Ohio and I have met a lot of Nigerians here in academics, medicine and engineering who are doing really well. I joined a Yoruba Club 21 group and almost everyone there have been here for more than 20 years and they have decent jobs and income. Nevertheless, there are a few who fit into the lifestyles that the OP is trying to describe. They came here for the wrong reasons - to look for riches or wealth that fall from heaven!

I think the OP did a good job trying to point out the racism and the challenges here. My take on this are the following:

1. You should define your reasons for coming here before you do. If you are coming here without the hope of first getting education or any vocational training, you might end up frustrated. It means you have to be contented with working menial jobs (even if you have a degree from a Nigerian University) and be prepared to work as many of them to keep up if you have a family to support.

2. If you are coming here to look for wealth or riches, don't bother try to apply for visas. Its harder to be rich here than in Nigeria. One thing is sure though, you are sure to be liberated from poverty if you are not lazy. So if the reason for leaving Nigeria is just to have a decent live, and you are ready to work as hard as you do in Nigeria (and more if you have a family) and be law abiding, you will have no problem.

3. Know that a lot of African Americans are lazy, be prepared to live with their hostilities. Never try to stay in their neighborhood. You will get a better deal being friends to white folks that African Americans.

I absolutely agree with you. Nigeria would be better off with regionalism. We have tried to run away from it but it sin't working. All these noise about 2015 is because northerners believe that they would die if they don't have control of the center to milk. If the center is made less attractive, the tension would ease.

Like it can be expected of any of the ethnic groups in the south, the Niger Delta/Ijaw people will make a tough demand (resource control up to say 80%, true federalism, a weak center etc) on the rest of the nation and opt to secede if those demands are not met (these interests naturally align with those of the SE and SW). If anyone resists them, Tompolo and Asari Dokubo will open their armoury and blow up all oil pipelines. The nation will be brought to her knees and they will have their way because other groups -SE and SW will probably make same demand. Plan B might be that the North will quickly see that this would dislodge their advantage and will beg Jonathan drop the SNC and he will demand a support for 2nd term in return.

In other words, If GEJ would not get 2015, he would clip the wings of the north forever because if the SNC succeeds, the North will lose its fraudulent advantage over other ethnic groups in Nigeria. All their rich men will lose oil blocks, oil money to the center will be too small to share and almajiri population will grow at a geometric proportion to an unmanageable size. In the light of scarce resources, a revolution that will claim almost all their elites will eventually ensure a wealth distribution sometime in the near future. By the time they see where all this is going, they will beg Jonathan to have a second term.

If GEJ's intention is genuine, perhaps it must be that he wants to make sure that the national cake that is causing tension at the center is no longer attractive so that it doesn't matter wherever the President of the country comes from. No one gets to assure the development of their areas at the expense of others by voting their son into the Presidency.

If Rwanda with an economy that doesn't measure up to Lagos can develop at this pace, then all those celebrating Fashola and maybe Amaechi should bury their heads in shame.

I know the amount of looting that goes on in Lagos on a daily basis. I also know that whatever the achievement of Fashola and ACN in Lagos, they are at best just doing about 40% of what they have capacity to do. Lagos makes a hell of money that any state should be jealous of but unfortunately, the people have been brainwashed to consider roads, half-funded hospitals, underfunded public schools (when they promised free education) and a lot of propaganda as the indices of development.

You are definitely not in tune with reality! Even when you try hard to explain that South-West people follow the media, the proportion of them who do that are still in the minority. If the media sway the people of the south-west so much, Buhari would have won there in 2011 because no day passes without a bashing for PDP in almost all available media, including Nairaland. The people should have hated PDP so much to not even consider Jonathan. The honest truth is that people know they are the same bunch of rogues - PDP or ACN or APC so they just narrow it down to the candidates.

If Jonathan refuses to go and beg the winners of the price in 1970, the owners of Nigeria that brokered his presidency, his days as president are numbered in 2015.

First and foremost, whatever act of disregard for agreement that Jonathan is showing today, he learnt it from OBJ. OBJ has no moral right to ask Jonathan to forget about running for 2nd term. OBJ himself agreed to one term in 1999 but he did two and even sought a third one betraying IBB in the process for 2nd term.

Secondly, the likes of OBJ, IBB and Atiku should know better that a Nigerian president who knows the extent of his power cannot be cowed. For example, at the time when IBB supposedly wielded so much power and influence in the army, OBJ used state apparatus to silence him. However, in this case they seem to still think that GEJ is the same timid shy guy who was governor of Bayelsa by share providence - a dummy who will never raise his voice. People grow up and get wiser.

Thirdly, GEJ doesn't really have much to lose unlike IBB, Atiku and OBJ whose continued relevance hinge on their ability to wield power, keep their oil enterprises and keep Nigeria as one at all cost to milk it dry in perpetuity. The options open to GEJ are very attractive. People who have been following events with their brains know that he has plan B. I cannot claim to know what it is but it could be catastrophic for these old fools trying to play God. Tompolo now has a jet from proceeds of oil pipeline contracts and I want to believe that he owns a secret armoury preparatory to 2015. Same goes to Asari Dokubo. Fasheun has been contracted to take care of the West with OPC. The plan could be to break Nigeria (I do not mind this option) or at least blow up the oil pipelines entirely. In the end, the north will be the biggest losers. All the oil blocks owned by their top guns including IBB and Atiku will be gone if Jonathan plays dirty. He is in a pole position to force himself on them.

Lastly, Jonathan is the bride for 2015. Everyone who has a thinking cap knows this. They just want to harass him and force him to play his cards so they can know where to wait for him. The truth is, they are all scared of him!!!

So you think that the US will attempt to sack Assad/the Syrian government without sitting down to analyze the chances and implications of Assad's backers - Russia, China, Iran etc forming alliances to attack them? You think they reason like Nigerians? What do you think they have been using their huge defense budget for? You think it has never crossed their minds that a day like this lye await for a nation of their stature? Do you ever think America is oblivious of the desperation of the Russians to achieve a balance of power since Ronald Reagan/CIA orchestrated breakdown of the soviet union?

Anyway, the reason Obama deferred the decision to intervene in Syria to the US congress was to have their inputs and satisfy the need for a high level deliberation because of the perceived possible escalation of the intended military action. The implications for the US inaction is grave. There is a compelling need to nip in the bud, the free use of chemical weapons/wmd in the middle-east. There are also huge and growing humanitarian concerns - about 6 million Syrians have been displaced since the war (I don't know where you got your 80% Syrian likeness for Assad from). There are also concerns for Israel if Hezbollah/Shiite Syria survives this or wax stronger. So please drop your propaganda that the Omar pipeline deal is spurring America to action. The US has been reluctant to act because Syria holds no economic benefit to them but the chemical weapon usage and the worsening humanitarian issues are of grave concern to "big brother". Excuses you may say but these are enough grounds for intervention. Everywhere in the world, the majority must be allowed to have their say. If Assad only controls about 30-40% of Syria as of now, he has no right to lay claim to legitimacy any longer.

If for anything the Russians are to be blamed for encouraging the Assad regime to hold on when the people are already tired of him and his government. From day one, the Russians have been arming the regime and helping them with intelligence for their own selfish reasons.

Your analysis is seriously flawed! You assumed that the bunch of South-Westerners found on Nairaland are the same with those who will vote in 2015. All the noise about South-Westerners sticking with APC only exists in Lagos among those whose opinions are swayed by the compromised media. Most of those who will vote do not read newspapers and have no access to the internet. I am from the South-West, there is nothing like block votes in the coming presidential election along party lines. People in the South-West do not see the presidential election as APC vs PDP, they see it as GEJ vs Buhari (assuming APC presents Buhari). You also forget the religion angle, the perception that APC is all about a grand islamic agenda. And if you know that the South-West is almost 50/50 muslim/christians, and the fact that many Yorubas (especially those who were adults during Buhari's tyrannical regime) know that they have never fared well under a hausa/fulani presidency, there is no way Jonathan will not have a decent showing. Lest you forget as well, South-Westerners do not take orders from Tinubu. At least Ondo State have proven that to be true.

Now lets talk about the performance of APC Governors in South-West. Anyone in his right senses know that APC is set to lose Ekiti State thanks to Fayemi's intolerance of the opposition both within and outside of the APC. In the last 6 months, scores of people in Ekiti State have lost their lives by the hands of Fayemi's thugs and much more are in the hospital nursing wounds inflicted on them by same people. Ekiti people will surprise APC in their next governorship election. In Ogun and Oyo States, debt profile have risen 200%. In the first quarter of this year, three out of the top five most indebted states in Nigeria are Lagos, Ogun and Oyo States, all under APC. Wait...just before you say they inherited the debts, PDP's Gbenga Daniel left a debt of approximately N49bn and APC's Senator Amosun has taken it to over N200bn today. Most of these borrowings have been pilfered away through inflated contract awards. Go check how much they are awarding contracts. Sensible people in the south-west know that these APC "Angels" are no better than their PDP predecessors. They steal with reckless abandon!

Lastly, you assume that all is well with APC as well. In my Ogun State for example, there are about three factions in the APC from the state level down to the LG wards; those loyal to the Governor, those loyal to former Governor Segun Osoba and those who take order directly from Tinubu. I am sure that APC will not succeed in placating all aggrieved members before the general elections. So they are as much vulnerable as PDP.
