berexio1: Nice one. I agree, you really are a subject matter expert on this one!!! I dont think is an expert as you said. He negletected the face value of actually investment upon which interest is being calculated and came up with such pseudo analysis. Check again the example he gave concerning borrowing from friend, you will see there is no correlation between what he was saying and TB. |
Investment › Re: Treasury Bills In Nigeria by yemmit90: 11:36am On Aug 04, 2015 |
NairaQuest: Thank you for your response, I think there is a general misconception within the Nigerian Investment community about the interest on TBills. The interest on Tbills is the difference between the discounted price you paid when you buy it and full principal you received when it matures, if you hold it to maturity, or the value you realized if you sell it before maturity. I have read many articles both in the Nigerian media and on forums alluding that TBill interests are paid upfront. I think that this is a misconception. In essence a TBill is nothing but an IOU issued by a government. It is not too different from the IOU that a friend issues to you as a contractual acknowledgement of debt, the only difference is that TBill is backed by the credibility of the government, which makes it seemingly risk free. Now, let us assume that a friend tesll you to lend him N50,000 and after 182 days he will pay you back N55,000, will you say that you received N5,000 interest upfront? In the same way, when you buy a N100,000 worth of TBill from the government by paying N90,000 because the yield is 10%, you are lending N90,000 to the government for 182 days or as the case may be and the government will pay you back N100,000, just like your friend would do.
The only scenario that will amount to upfront interest is if the government credits your account via your bank with N10,000 when you buy the TBill and pays you N90,000 on the maturity date. If you say that you received N10,000 upfront, and the government pays you back the full N100,000 on maturity, then you would have received N20,000 on N90,000 investment. When looking at TBills, like any other investment (except such derivatives like futures, swaps or forwards which do not involve initial cash flows), you should look at the cash flow. In the case above, the initial cash outflow is N90,000 while the inflow at maturity is N100,000 making the interest N10,000 receivable at maturity.
In terms of access to interest, you have access to the full interest as long as you hold it to maturity, because it paid at maturity but should you decide to sell before maturity, you will either get part of the interest or lose it all or in part depending on the trend of market interest rate because the post issue price of TBill is a function of market rate otherwise called yield. Given the inverse relationship between price and interest rate, if market interest rate rises a great deal, the TB price may reduce so much such that you sell below the value you bought it thereby losing out on the interest for the period you have held it. The reverse will be the case in a situation of falling interest rate.
Thanks once again for the opportunity to engage in this discussion What is the 10% of 90,000 you claimed you lends out? And why do you think the calculation is based on the said 100,000 and not 90,000 that was actually deducted? |

fnk: I don't know how you guys do it, I process my birds and sell to entries at N680/kg and to supermarkets at about N1000/kg. I don't know how anyone can sell at N370, it must have been chickens raised with hormone booster, because I cannot understand how anyone can raise bird to 2kg with obviously less than N370. If you are not using hormone booster or super medicating them to get them to 2kg under N370, please share your raising process. As some of you already know, I do not use any medication on my birds apart from the lasota and gomboro that is given to them within their 10 days old. This way we raise premium birds, So even at N680, is a give away. He meant 370/kg, so 2kg of a life bird give you 740. The dressed weight of the same bird give you between 1.4/1.5kg. let assume he sell it at #680 to the eateries, 2kg of the same bird at 1.5kg dressed weight will give you #1020. So 1020-740= 280. It is from that 280 the guy would substract all his running expenses(transport, workers, fuel, etc) to get his net profit. I'm not try to defend him, his prize is indeed small and that was why i asked him to add something. But anything from 380 upward is still ok. Like 'fnk' it would be better for anyone to raise and process by his/herself but you cant have enough birds to process, that is the fact. |

This is the reason he gave us the free will. Besides, 98% of what we dreamt about are what already been instilled consciously or unconsciously into our sub-conscious minds. The remaining 2% are the revelation from God in which one need not to worry too much about if he/she believe in him. |

Sorry for your predicament, it could be as a result of stress or depression. You can pray about it if you're a religion's freak. But the best way to make it stop is to remove the thought of having it from your sub-conscious mind. If this is not work, then you turn it to a laughing stuff(you take it as a mere dream that has nothing to do with your existence).

onetrack: I'm as atheist as they come. All religions are man-made and used to control people. However I would never refer to religious people as 'subhumans'. They are people like us. Dehumanizing others is a dangerous road to go down. I know some wonderful people who happen to be religious. Now Boko Haram, yes, they are subhuman trash. Human cannot survive withiout worshiping something. People worship God for different reason. Remember there are many gods, and if i must follow your analogy that 'humans created gods', then dont you think that they created these gods for many reasons? |

fnk: All the birds didn't die at once, we called in different vets, their conclusion was where we got the feed from, in good fath a friend offered to help cut my cost on feed my compounding feed for me. He has a mill in his farm where mill for his layers. The proximity of his mill to the layers pen is very close, so buying those feed and taking them to my farm was like introducing the bacteria from his farm to my, while his birds are muted to those bio security, my farm and birds weren't , so, everyday, we were recording high number of mutuality, and trying to treat the birds with different kind of drugs, and their suffering from the attack, stalled their growth, so, a 12 weeks bird was weighing 700g so we have to destroy over 1000 birds ourself, because at that point, the cost of raising the birds were already above N1,500/bird. So, it didn't make sense to continue trying to feed them or treat them. So, I have learned from that experience, I was trying to save money and didn't think through the descsion. But everything was done with good intention, my friend wanted to help me. So, don't buy feed from a farm where the mill is right next to the pen of their own birds, you will be bridging the bio security in your farm with the virus and bacteria from the other farm. Sorry about your lost, it is part of experience one need to become an expert in this field. Besides, some lessons has been learned from your post. |

davidzfarm18: Yemmit90. I think FNK is right. When I was into broilers. by weighing 10- 15 birds. I can tell you precisely the weight of others. sometimes by holding the birds in my hand. I can tell if the are 2.1 or 2.3. the difference is not always above .5 Are you talking about sorting birds or entire flock? Well, i will agree with you that by holding a bird, you can predict it weight(though might not be exactly)but seriously you cant tell precisely the average weight or weight of others by sampling just 10/15. |
