These are some of the problems with our society. We are prejudiced about everything and feel like we don't need to learn anything anymore.

PoliticsRe: 2 Year Rents Banned In Lagos, Landlords To Be Jailed For 3 Years. by ziga: 4:01pm On Aug 06, 2011
They also need to make a law protecting landlords from tenants who refuse to pay their rent on time. Nigerians never believe in paying any bill on-time.

This 2 year rent started coz many landlords know that they have to beg endlessly, or for the brute ones - resort to threats before they can get their money. And landlords too have bills to pay. Therefore having 2 years worth of rent decreases the frequency of such happening.

I'm not saying this is a bad law, but you have to really understand the situation before you make laws. Both sides - landlords and tenants are guilty of abuse, as such the law should be 2 sided to protect all those involved!

PoliticsRe: The Day Fashola Gave Up His Seat by ziga: 7:07pm On Jul 26, 2011
bashy_demy:
Yesterday, the governor of Lagos state, Babatunde Fashola, gave up his seat at the state executive council chamber, Lagos House, Ikeja, to 17-year-old Iniodu Akpankpan, the one-day Governor of Lagos for 2011.

Mr Akpankpan emerged winner at the grand finale of the Spelling Bee Competition in April, a competition organised by the state’s ministry of Education and New Era Foundation, to earn this honour. He was received at the Lagos House by Mr Fashola and other members of the state executive council.

Acting as his cabinet members for the day were the competition’s first runner-up, Kayode Ikumelo, who took over the deputy governor’s role, and John Okorie, the competition’s second runner-up, who was the commissioner for Information and Strategy for the day. Other runner-ups in the competition acted as commissioners for the day. Sola Bello acted as commissioner for Environment, Oluwatoyin Adeyemi was the commissioner for

Education and Temilade Adesanya was the commissioner for Transportation.

The proud teenagers’ first stop was the State House, Marina, where they were received by the Deputy Governor, Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire. Then they visited Mr Akpankpan’s school, Baptist Senior High School, Obanikoro, where they got a rousing welcome by students and teachers of the school. They also visited the office of Honeywell Superfine Foods Limited, Boys Remand Home, Oregun, Lagos Television, Agidingbi, Office of the Head of Service, The Secretariat, Alausa, Office of the Ministry of Education also at the secretariat and Educational Resource Centre, Ojodu.

At every stop, they were given the royal treatment, several gifts and Mr Akpankpan was addressed as ‘Your Excellency’. It was indeed a memorable time for them as they basked in the euphoria of the privilege bestowed on them for the day.

Mr Akpankpan will not let the day end without making a governorship demand, on behalf of his school. He demanded ‘urgent attention’ for the rehabilitation of the school library, renovation of the school hall, building of school toilets for staff and teachers and provision of school bus; all of which got a promissory note from the state’s commissioner for Education, Olayinka Oladunjoye.

For him, it was a great day that he would never forget. He commended Mr Fashola on the development in all sectors of the economy his administration has achieved, describing him as the best and only working governor in Nigeria.

“We are not unmindful of the giant strides your administration has recorded over the last four years. Lagosians would forever be grateful to you,” he said.

He also noted some development in the education sector of the state such as increase in teachers’ salaries, renovation of school buildings and the Eko Project.

“Education sector of Lagos state in particular has worn a new look as we now see teachers and students smiling,” Mr Akpankpan said.

In his response, Mr Fashola congratulated the students and encouraged then to: work hard, listen to their parents, and seek to be the best always. While recalling the success achieved by the past winners of the Spelling Bee Competition in their various Universities, Mr Fashola told them to “go out to excel and exceed the achievement of predecessors.”

While stating that the one-day experience would remain with them as long as they live and inspire them to greater heights, he added that he hoped it would lead them to pursue a course in public service. “I believe the exposure of young people in this way begins to excite their interest in the working operations of the government and dynamics of public service,” he said.

As a gift, Governor Fashola gave Mr Akpankpan a desktop computer, one year Internet subscription and a generating set. He also gave Mr Ikumelo a laptop computer and consolation gifts to the other winners.

I have followed this thread since it began. And even though i agree with you that Nigerians generally give more credit to themselves than they deserve, you have repeatedly proven that you are an example of the people you describe by your statements.

The typical Nigerian who believes he is smart is very non-objective, and views every counter argument as a challenge to his/her ego. Even though Gbawe stated that a Nigerian owns Gatwick earler, we have since established that was not the point of his counter argument to your initial post.

But it seems your ego just prevents you from completely seeing his point of view. And you have repeatedly brought up that petty point. I don't know why. Just to boost your ego or to have the final wordhuh

I think Gbawe has been a lot more objective with his counter arguments so far, and if you have any objective arguments, your ego and inability to accept that another person might be correct(typical of Nigerians that you described) has prevented you from expressing your views coherently.

there is no reason for nigerians to boast or be overbearing in their dealings with other africans as is our wont.
Talking about Nigerians not being as smart as they think. With the above statement, you seem to be comparing Nigerians with other African nations, but in your previous posts, you were comparing Nigerians with Indians especially and some other countrieshuh

PoliticsRe: Nigerians Think They Are Smart But Really: by ziga: 8:06pm On Jun 12, 2011
Gbawe:
Comments on this thread glaringly amplifies the problem with Nigeria for those discerning enough to introspect and take even their own personal attitude, outlook and thinking into consideration. Nigerians are smart, innovative and intelligent . That is without doubt. Our main problem is that we are not united and simply do not believe in Nigeria enough to reach the point of selflessness that facilitates progressive nation building . The "every man for himself" attitude is now firmly entrenched.

We are only ever to be found, as evident on this thread, criticising as if we are somehow dissociated from the problems of Nigeria. Somehow , it is other who are "greedy" and "wicked" - not us. It is easy to prove my point . If most Nigerians commentators on this thread are balanced and objective citizens in the normal sense of the world , as pertains to what obtains worldwide, we would have seen more robust defence of outrightly wrong assertions against Nigeria. Instead all I see is pseudo-intellectual pontification driven by inobjective thinking that has already made up its mind to unpatriotically give Nigeria a bad name to hang it. What others do that Nigerian does not do is now a negative indictment against Nigeria . What Nigeria does that others do not do is also a Negative indictment against Nigeria . How can Nigeria win or even make progress when its own citizens are such inobjective critics of their own Nation?

Right on page one aribisala0 wrote:

I was the only one who challenged this highly inobjective example from a person keen to wallow in self hatred of his Country to the extent that everything to him that we do or don't do is a negative indictment of Nigeria. I must tell all of you that normal citizens of a country don't behave like this . They can criticise their Country but they won't stand for their country to be maligned falsely . I wrote in response:

Yet all folks could focus on , while ignoring what they must see as normal citizens of Nigeria , was that I said a Nigerian owns Gatwick . How most folks glaringly ignored what is important (the inobjective accusation against Nigeria) to focus and talk on what is trivial exposes the huge cataract in their eyes that makes them not understand that they are now firmly part of the problem of Nigeria. They don't even realise that they too do not believe in Nigeria enough to even defend her , as non-Nigerians would do for their Country, when Nigeria is maligned wrongly. They prefer to ignore what is important to begin speaking as it is others who are the problem of Nigeria.

Above, the Gatwick example was only made to show that it is acceptable in modern Countries for foreigners to own businesses, concessions and important companies. What would indicate a problem is when foreigners own most things worthwhile in a nation as is the ironic case with a West African nation aribisala0 is always keen , perhaps out of sheer ignorance of what is on the ground, to praise as an example of those nations showing that "Nigerians are not smart" . The ignorance of what obtains in other nation , that leads many Nigerians to demonize Nigeria, is truly shocking to me personally.  A lebanese person owning a restaurant at a Nigerian airport can only be considered a negative indictment against Nigeria by someone looking at issues without objectivity. Afterall , many foreigners own British football clubs and businesses . Al Fayed owned the most British of Businesses i.e Harrods. I guess it is either that the British are not smart or that , for any objective person, the Brits have just accepted the trends set to be the norm in the global village that sees borders shrinking.

Aribisala0 then wrote this with no one challenging it:

Folks, you are Nigerians. Is what is written above not ridiculous and meriting a reply from any of you? Some Countries far more developed than Nigerian and Ghana don't have their products at Tesco yet a Nigerian can contend that because Nigerian products are not sitting next to Ghanaian products at his local Tesco we are "not smart" ? Haba ? I cannot even begin to go into the millions of very obvious reasons , non of which are negative, that may explain why Nigerian products are not on the shelves of Tesco !!!!

You guys should all wake up and smell the Coffee !!! You are all part of the problem. It is very obvious that most of you are now so uncharitable towards your Country that you casually fail to see what is obvious in preference for believing yourself , in your diasporan bases, to be innocent while contending others are the problem. I can tell some of you categorically that you are even damaging your nation unfairly with what you write that demonstrates your wholesale ignorance of what obtains , on the ground , in other Nations!!!!!

If most of you become involved in influential positions you will quickly become those you criticise. The problem with Nigeria iscertainly not what many of you claim it is. That much is demonstrated by what you are all writing to include what you choose to comment on and what you fail to see or perhaps prefer to deliberately ignore.
Your analysis here was on point. This is the biggest problem we have with Nigeria.

It is very easy for everybody to identify these problems, but we always fail to see ourselves as a part of the problem. It is always some other person.

The thread was supposed to show that Nigerians are not as smart as they think they are, but surprisingly, a lot of Nigerian posters here are trying to prove superior knowledge. World of contradictions.

Our strength is in our pride, but unfortunately, it is also the same thing that prevents us from working together to achieve a common goal/dream that we all have!!!
HealthRe: Yam Eating Is Responsible For Multiple Births In Ekiti? by ziga: 7:40pm On Jun 12, 2011
Kinda not surprised that the talks would end up this way. . . "Theory can't be true because some people perceive that Igbos eat more yam". LOL
Igbos yam eating abilities vs Yorubas yam eating abilities.

Actually, West Africa as a group has the highest rate of twins in the world, and among the 3 major tribes in Nigeria, Yoruba has the highest rates, and among the Yoruba people, the Ekitis as a group have been noticed to have very high rates of twins.

So far, the patterns do not suggest anything strongly genetic, but environmental, and the biggest suspect is the Yam, or maybe something in the soil. Genetics plays a stronger role in monozygotic (identical) twins.

deadie:
Where is her scientific study to back up her claims? I hope that she realises that as a public woman, she should speak only facts. Seems like we now have a Nigerian version of Sarah Palin.
It is documented that Yoruba people/Nigeria have the highest rate of Dizygotic(fraternal) twins in the world, and it has been speculated that some chemical substance in the Yam has the ability to induce ovulation of multiple eggs in females.

With the current state of our health sector and more troubling health issues, it is not surprising that trying to prove this theory is not our top priority.

http://emedicine.medscape.com/article/977234-overview#a0199

Another school of thought is that it might not actually be the yam, but some chemical substance in our soil which eventually is absorbed by our food crops. None of these have been proven. But it is proven that Yorubas/Nigeria has the highest rate of twins in the world.

You see how you show your hand more, and your real direction, with the type of protectionist talk I hinted you were biased towards? What if Nigerians don't own Restaurants in Lebanon? Should that be a yard stick for anything? How many Nigerians do you know who have told you they want to set up Restaurants in Lebanon? Have you even factored the attitude, culture , eating habits, social predisposition and business set up laws of the Lebanese themselves into the equation?

This may very well easily explain the one way traffic without necessarily maligning Nigerians of anything i.e on the ground peculiarities could simply make it possible for the Lebanese to own restaurants in Nigeria and not the other way round. Do Nigerians not own fairly successful restaurant in the USA , UK , Ghana and other Country with similar language, liberalness and affinity issues? If the Chinese can own Restaurants in Nigeria and the opposite does not happen the reasons are obvious and they do not include any argument that just seems to want to make Nigerians guilty of something by force. That why I said use genuinely objective examples and you will probably get some heavyweights in the thread.

PoliticsRe: Why Do Most Nigerians Shout When They Speak? by ziga: 4:07pm On May 29, 2011
Nigerians generally have become very angry and arrogant!!!

When you generate your own electricity, water, create your own road paths to get to work, you believe you are the king of the world, and anybody who tries to challenge you doesn't know what he is talking about.

So, when you have 150 million kings living together, that is what you get. A shouting battle.
Politics24/7 Electricity. . . Maybe This Is The Revolution We Need! by ziga(op): 1:44am On May 26, 2011
I been thinking. . .

Maybe providing electricity 24/7 by our goodluck is the revolution we really need.

I have noticed that a lot of Nigerians have this inner anger which reflects in everything we do.
After struggling so hard to generate your own electricity, enduring the all-night noise/environmental pollution. I bet this will drive any normal human being to the edge of insanity, and any little thing on top of that will tip you over the edge.

You see this anger in the way we speak, our attitudes. People drink pure water and throw the wrap in the street in anger, we are angry with anybody that asks us to pay for any form of service, we angrily ask other people to pay us for services not rendered, aggression on the roads by Okada, by the average driver, our polce dey vex, even armed robber sef dey vex.

Our recklessness has wrecked Nigeria, and no doubt, our recklessness was induced by the failure of our government. So, i was thinking/wishing. . . maybe providing 24/7 electricity or anything even remotely close to it. . . 20/5 sef, would touch the life of almost every Nigerian in the most unimaginable way.

To Mexdez and a few of the other NLanders who had serious comments to post, thank you for your presence on NL and I pray that we have more people like you in this country. I won't like to mention names but it is so clear that some comments were either posted by complete bastards, illiterates, jokers or a mix of any of the 3.

It is quite unfortunate that d world had to watch the video but what was depicted is just the reality that 'govt-backside licking' media in Nigeria and a lot of folks would pretend does not exist. People are suffering in this country and a lot of people are oblivious to the fact, the day a sizeable number of Nigerians wake up to the obvious, perhaps a revolution would begin.

I'm a doctor working, at least for now, in the North and I have a small clue as to the level of suffering being experienced by many in this country. A few examples perhaps:

1. I was in the market last week and there was dis lady selling 'road-side' food that a lot of people buy. Nway, as I was walking past, a customer had mistakenly spilled his entire plate of indomie on the floor and was expressing displeasure when a couple of almajiris ran to start eating dis indomie without minding that the noodles fell on d sand. Now, d entire environment is one I wld neva be found eating not to even imagine being in d position of those kids, now, d almajiris is a complex issue bt I just wanna illustrate d level of suffering some of dis kids go through. Many almajiris find it tougher than the kids featured in the al-jazeera video cos in dia case, they are completely left to fend for themselves,

2. Or shld I go ahead with tales of wot goes on in MMSH, a supposedly cheap general hosp run by kano state govt? Because a lot of services are free, everyone goes dia bt wot goes on there can make some people break down,
- women in labor who are eclamptic are convulsing on the floor cos of no beds
- people die because surgery was postponed because d generator was bad. If they're lucky, the surgery is started with generator and completed with touch lite fone (I've had only 1 such experience. Thank God d kid did very well after dat)
- people r brought in with shock bt can't affford normal saline so your helpless
- several children die each week from typhoid perforatn cos dia parents either keep dem at home thinking d dsx is diabolical in origin, or bring dem to d hosp expecting free care. In my own hosp, we smetimes waive surgery fee for such pxts but wot abt drugs and IV fluids- the parents many times can't afford so d kids die

There are just too many instances to mention, a lot of people are suffering. We really need to come to terms with our many problems and stop leaving in the clouds,

Abeg, I don tire to dey write, Our leaders are too wicked and the corruption has eaten so deep into our hearts that being corrupt is fashionable. Please people, wake up to the reality,
If it took going to the North to see almajiris eating Noodles from the floor to realize that Nigerians were suffering, then it is YOU, my brother that has been living in the clouds.
And this aljazz documentary was definitely meant for you.

The same Nigerian doctors and nurses relocate to US and the UK where they are well respected and appreciated by the society, where they are better paid, where they have equipment to work with and over there, they become very professional, nice and loving.

What this tells us is that the problem is not the nurses and the doctors. The problem is a failure of the whole health system in the country. Actually, almost everything has failed.
Everybody is frustrated, and truthfully, it takes a lot of will power not to vent your anger on the people you are meant to serve. lecturers take out their anger on students, Health workers on patients, MTN customer service on customers, conductors on passengers . . . The list is endless!!!

Every single Nigerian is involved in one way or the other.

I'm not saying this is the right way to go. Just saying that before you start pointing. . . look in the mirror. if everybody did this including our leaders, maybe everything will be better someday.
