erico2k2: U got it wrong, write of is a decission reached in terms of cost of repairs, however any car with any kind of chasis damage is a write of even if its just the crash bracket.they wont lay a finger on it.Check dont you see o n the IAAI and copart websites that the vast majority of accident cars sold are being sold by insurance companies?these are all write offs.
you read in a rush we are all saying the same thing
Investbrooker: I dont give a damn about Nigeria. Nigeria is an artificial creation, but my tribe is not. I can never ever accept any person from my family to marry outside their tribe. Intertribal marraige is bullshyte.
I stick to what i believe in. That is my business. Let me also say that if my child is to marry a lady, and the lady's mother isnt Yoruba, I will never approve the marraige. The girl's parents must both be Yoruba by tribe.
Na my life
i respect your view if they make you happy then am happy for you
Lexusgs430: Sending channels of wrecked transformation, is not the issue here......
The presumed issue is, buyer probably thought he was buying a puppy, but got delivered a wild camel ........
I am perfectly aware wrecks can be transformed, but keep the buyer abreast of all the honest information + pictures, enabling buyer make an informed decision.......
I bet, the vehicle was sold as if it had a clean title......
we are on the same page now
it it the buyers responsibility to do checks on the car before buying
erico2k2: Yes it was if not they will fix it..written off does not mean unrepeatable , it simply means it will cost too much to fix .
write off from the insurance means its not worth repair from insurance point of view to get it repairs
remember companies that do repairs for insurance companies charge like crazy
also like here in UK there are categories when come to accident damage cars and some categories require the car to be inspected after repairs by governtment vehicle inspection department, if the repairs are to standard then it gets approved then it goes to another different test which is roadworth certificate
once the car is approved by the government, the dealer cant just say they wont deal with your car just like thats usually they refuse after taking your car in and discovering what they might think that its to dangerous to work on it eg an secured wires running allover etc but not from the vin report of being repaired accident damaged car
erico2k2: Dealership sahre records via VIN number, it will come up as flagged, dont 4get it would be an Insurance write off and that would be recoreded as well,it wont take them 5 mins.
do you really think that car was written off by insurance ?
Investbrooker: My parents don't need to tell me before I know what is right or wrong. I am Yoruba and i don't support intertribal marraiges. People should marry from their tribe to preserve their culture, language and unique DNA.
Only people without fore sights marry people from other tribes. Why will someone marry a woman from another tribe when you know the risks involved? Your kids will be "mixed blood" and not full blood!!! They won't align with your tribe alone so why risk it? They will grow up confused and not know where they should align. They won't appreciate your tribe like you do. I have seen kids from different tribe and believe me you can differentiate them from full blood. Only a fool will see this and choose to ignore.
I will never allow my child to marry a non Yoruba. If he/she do, I will disown such bastard. Intertribal marraige is bullshyte. Marry from your tribe. Just my honest opinion
we are all entitled to our self beliefs and wishes and i respect yours though i got questions for you so you would talk a look from a different point of view
1 are you rich becoz u married a your own tribe or just your own gifted talent ?
2 this pour blood thing!! do you get paid more at work becoz of having the pour blood ? do you have better life becoz of that ?
3 kids get confused if parents are confused,
4 you want to stick to what you know becoz you dont want to learn what is outside your comfort zone
5 you see most conflicts in African they start from mind set, we are so rooted to tribes instead of embracing to say you nigerian, then embrace yo tribe, and embrace others culture
Drealtalker: Most times you find out that the girls that are not that beautiful tend to keep their cars virginity better than beautiful girls.. Pls debate
those who found out that the girls are not virgins, are they virgins themselves ?
JAYUK: Good day,the vehicle starts most times and stalls to a halt while being driven,it displays on the dash board stop and start system malfunction visit your dealer.we have checked the start and stop switch, thumb start switch all seem ok, a scan of the vehicle did not show any code. Please Gazzuz, auto Josh, sienna etc please assist
the problem you want to run things cheaply
the car clearly is telling were the issue is and you are talking the car to an average mechanic
its a 2017 and from the basic study here most general mechanic still remove the thermostat saying its for cold climate and you expect the same mechanic to diagnose your 2017 car
Most the mechanics dont have a scan they can do ABS or Airbag
take it to the toyota dealer it will save your car from being butchered
sooperrescue: You have raised serious posers. The customs documents are the only documents used for registration of the car. The government is lazy else by law, the Nigerian customs should be at the licensing office so that they can verify the authenticity of the documents that was presented by the owner of the car. Motor vehicle administration is a State matter and if the authenticity of my car documents issued by Lagos State is being questioned by the customs, then we have a big problem here. And I also believe that the logistics involved deploying Customs on the highway is very high than if the government deploys Custom officers to licensing offices. The last reason is the impunity that comes from the fact that the Customs officers that allowed those vehicles into the country are not dealt with hence the problem will continue.
yap
you have seen my thoughts to say if the car has been registered already then its nolonger the duty of the customs officer to ask for customs papers, but the customs office and the vehicle registration office should investigate each other if the car in question has phonny papers from either of the office, unfortunately car might be impounded. But the customs officer can not random stop cars at road side thats should be the duty of the police or the vehichle registration office

stevalos555: First Custom & Excise Management Act CEMA a Law of the Federal Republic Of Nigeria LFN gives customs officers the power to search and ask such questions.
Secondly The importers in Nigeria have a very destructive method of importing cars in Nigeria. This is because our border are porous, they smuggle so many cars into the country through Benin republic, customs officers cannot ascertain in details the number of vehicles imported into the country everyday. This is because of staff strength, risk involved and low Morale etc
Thirdly Customs have tried as much as possible to educate the public on the powers the wield and the need for owners of vehicle to verify the authenticity of the vehicle in their possession. They have emphasized also the penalty of defaulters.
Also the law back that vehicle above 25 yrs shouldn't be imported, so if you vehicle after 5 years falls into that category most officers will not bother to know the status of your car duty payment. Also a car that is above five years of usage and where it been driven determines if it will be profiled or not. Example driving a neat venza in the Highway will definitely attract officers because of the year of manufacture and the place is driven, but driving same in Lagos city won't except a tip off.
well in Nigeria you are required to take along all necessary documentations because at the point of car registration most of these documentation are not required. The customs have been proposing to Government to mandate FRSC to make it mandatory for customs papers, to be presented before licensing and vehicle registration but till now... SO officers resort to stop and search.
The vehicle was simply smuggled through Benin republic, the border is so free, you can smuggle a human being through it. A particular African leader comes to mind...
i see and i know thats customs have the right to stop and search
i thought nigeria has the same system, like UK or my native zimbabwe whereby, to get the car registered, you must have all papers of importation etc and once the car has been registered by the government central registration office, you get your plate number no customs officer will stop you to ask for customs paper etc unless, there is an investigation of the stopped car started by custom office or central registration office whereby there are specifically looking for the car
whereas from what am gathering here investigation starts from the road side after being stopped and asked for paper like the import clearance duty etc, of which the car would have been sold 5 times from the time of importation.
having said, i now understand how its works, yes your borders are not that tight but also the laws needs to changed to stop harassment of innocent drivers
like here in UK the log book aka the vehicles certificate show the number of previous owners, meaning if the car was imported from america the person/business who imported it dealt with vehicles registration, the current shouldnt be asked importation and duty papers.
the system would work like something like, customs officer stop the car (suspicion one) ask for vehicle registration book, check vin number both on paper and car. checks government registration office when was car registered and if his office have the dates of importation of the vehicle, if anything doesnt add then the car can be impounded for further investigstion
the central registration is also a very big part of the whole smuggling thing and some buyers are just victim of the corrupt system
Cyberknight: Ironically, I'm not even qualified to post here, because after almost 20 years of driving manual cars, I have practically never had any trouble with my manual transmissions in ANY of the cars I have driven, except for one time I had to change all that clutch plate, disc, bla bla bla on a Benz 200, which the mechanic got right after two tries.
It is worth pointing out, for the benefit of the man who asked about which is better to learn with, that in some countries in Europe, when you are applying for your first license after learning how to drive, they give you two kinds of licenses: the first is a FULL drivers license given to those who learnt to drive with manual transmissions, and the second is a restricted license given to those who learnt how to drive with auto transmissions, which allows you to drive ONLY cars with automatic transmissions.
Real men drive manuals.
a bit of correction
you are not given option as you say but you are only given the licence according to type you did learn to drive and tested on
if you did learn, drive and tested on manual, then you get a manual licence, no need to be given automatic licence becoz you can drive an automatic striaght away
then for one who did learn, drive and tested on automatic its different thing altogether, your licence would be for automatics only and you wouldnt be able to drive manual straight away, you would need to be taught again to drive a manual
so you start as leaner again, get tested and pass and you are given your manual licence
as for UK a manual licence is like a two in one licence you can drive both manual and auto
MrMcJay: Sometime ago, a clearing agent boasted here on Nairaland that he helps people bring vehicles in from Cotonou and register them at the Tincan Ports in Lagos despite the fact that land borders have been closed by the Nigerian Customs to vehicle importation. When we asked him how he'll do it, he said he has his way of doing it.
What made me open this thread was an incident that happened to a friend a few weeks ago. He bought a Tokunbo Venza from an auto dealer here in Nigeria. Before buying, he conducted due-diligence at the customs desk and it checked out.
After using it for about a year, he resold it to another buyer. The second buyer also conducted due-diligence at the customs desk and it also checked out.
While on Badagry Road, customs officers stopped him and after inspecting his papers, they impounded the vehicle. The buyer was confident to take on them because he had Customs Papers which checked out as at when he bought.
When he got to the office, the Customs guys explained what happened.
1. The agent who cleared the vehicle attached the details of the vehicle to a Container coming into Nigeria as if the vehicle was part of the cargo into Nigeria.
2. The Origin of the container was China and it was carrying industrial parts.
3. The dealership that sold the vehicle was in Texas, America.
4. They traced the details of the vehicle and discovered that it sailed from Houston to Porto Novo in Republic of Benin.
5. Last recorded Port was in Benin Republic before it miraculously appeared in a container coming from China to be cleared in Lagos.
6. There is no legal way that vehicle could have gotten to Nigeria from Cotonou.
7. In Lagos Port, the agent underpaid the value of the car but somehow got the customs papers.
The reason for this epistle is to provide information to prevent innocent Nairalanders from falling into this crime perpetrated by fraudulent agents and their allies.
1. Is there a way an innocent buyer can avoid falling into this problem?
2. Is there a particular Customs office buyers can go to physically verify that not only were the proper duties paid, but correct information given?
3. If you pay and customs officers collude with unscrupulous agents to defraud Nigerians, is there an official mechanism to get redress for the innocent buyer?
4. Is there an avenue for innocent buyers to pay unpaid customs fees over sized vehicles and ensure they are released?
5. For vehicles bought brand new in Nigeria and receipts issued by dealers, is there a way to verify duties were paid on those vehicles?
This is a kind of self-help thread since there's hardly information on these anywhere and the customs guys don't care.
just want to understand how things work in nigeria
1st why should a customs officer random stop any car and ask for import papers and duty paid ? it is not the duty of the buyer to prove to custom officer that the car paid enough duty the person who imported the car was liable to do that and if he underpaid. so lets say the car was sold 5 times and am the present owner how will know if the car paid enough duty a car that was imported 5 years ago ?
Is it not that the custom officers are taking advantage of the general public being ignorant of not know that, as a buyer of a car imported by someone , you are not liable to pay duty on the car, the importer was
also as the buyer of a car that was imported by someone else, you can not be liable to produce import papers, those are only required when registering the car to get licence plate (UK) format you only get proper papers to register you car after paying enough duty. so in nigerian why would an officer ask me custom papers when am not the importer of the car ?
like i said let me know how things work in nigeria,
yes a custom officer can stop a vehicle and check cars especially the ones under investigation but asking for customs papers and duty paid is meant to be asked the importer and customs
back to the story
noted 4 and 5
the care was claimed to be have passed through Benin ports right, so if the car was recorded at Benin ports then it means the car was in transit to somewhere, hence why Benin ports have the record so were was the heading if they claim that
later the car appeared on list from a container from china ?
so it means on the Benin port the car was heading for nigeria on a different container, besides reappering on container from china and still heading for nigeria, if the car was heading somewhere else beside nigeria, customs wouldnt have traced it back to benin port as they claim becoz they wouldnt have paperwork for goods that had nothing to do with nigeria, unless if the car was passing through nigeria to another country
royalguy123: Good am,NLs .please help me wish my help mate, better half, counselor, complete package, manager of the home, disciplinarian and mother of my five lovely children. i might be wrong but
whats the point of writing all that on a website instead of saying it directly to her ?
its a three way sort of reflection, you write your feelings about her here and for to know what you wrote she has to come here and read it
tetralogyfallot: my fuel finished on the road then I decided to buy black market of half gallon to take me to a filling station. The car finished the fuel just before 8km journey. I service the car just last week. The engine size is 16v.
you dont know the size of your engine
how you even calculate the mpg of your car when you dont even know the engine size of your car ?
16v simply means 16vavles that has nothing to do with engine size
dru23: You shall live long my brother.. Can you imagine I was trying to explain the importance of coolant.. And I was bash up and down. The car I was rebuilding had zero coolant, I try to explain to the mechanic that I must buy coolant. The mechanic seems pretty good, but I felt that he should be the one pushing me to buy coolant.. Long story I tire, I will now import my own coolant from now on.. My conclusion is that most people have zero clue on car maintenance. And upon all the car thread. Nobody talks the importance of changing your timing belt and alternator belt.. A lot of cars or let say tokunbo cars are due for all these things to be change. Most of the cars that come in are high milage. One person stated that, he or she don't understand why people use full synthetic oil . And people should use more of conventional oil. On a car that is mostly at least over 100k miles. Omo I shake my head. Can you imagine conventional oil on a car that people use on uber?
99% of all imports to africa are high mileage hence there are cheap to the man on street, thats reason they also breakdown quickly if you dont do your own maintainance
in africa people get attracted to the body than the engine, here in the west main thing is mileage which also sort of say the age of the car based on the theory that an average family car does 10000miles per year, so any car which is 10 year old based on the manufuctures date should have atleast 90000 and above
so all imports which low mileage are rolled back and the engine would need good maintainance etc unfortunately for africa the engine is choked to its death by overloading and poor regular maintainance
dru23: You forget the most common one ..people wash the engine of their cars.. Am not a car expert o. But common sense will tell you that washing a car engine ,might not be a good idea ..this applies especially in the Nigerian environment.. The right tools are not readily avaliable.. I had a similar experience, the car engine of my uber car was wash.. Few minutes later, the car was jerking.. So they had to drain the plugs and dry up the plugs .I said to myself who washes car engine, was the car playing in the mud?
true
i am non nigerian
and have nigerian guy who does buying from auctions and brings car to us to fix to it can be roadworth
so far he has created problem for himself on 3 cars always cleaning the engine and cars not starting
i told cleaning an engine needs someone who knows parts to avoid and also as buyer i wouldnt want a car with shinning engine unless if the car is for motor shows
cleaning an engine on car you want to resale sort of makes it as if you are hiding something eg oil leak
you know a non leaking oil or grease engine will never attract dust, the engine should be in its dry looking nothing dusty or shinny
CuTTiieAngeL: Few years ago, i was eight when my mum and dad got seperated, their marriage was filled with ups and down, it couldn't work...2weeks after their seperation, my dad brought another woman in, she was fully married. court, church and traditional...since she came our family went into shreds...the love began to slack....she gave birth to a boy, it became worst. my mum on her own is trying to survive, truly she was wedded traditionally, but she has children for my dad, 3 girls and a male child, she works, pays her rent and assist us with food stuffs and somethings ....my younger sister(17) just wrote my her post utme and my step mum is threatening her to get a job, so she can train herself in school...yeah my dad is in support of it, he even told my mum to pay her school fees, that he is unable to pay our fees for the next semester...is it my mum responsibility to pay the school fees of the kids when my dad is alive?
its both parents responsibity to provide for there kids, wether divorced or not, by law they should till the child is 18, from a family structure they can still support till the child is able to stand in his/her feet usually when one tell parents that s/he us grown up and wants to leave on his/her own
tetralogyfallot: My recently acquired ford focus seems 2 b consuming so much fuel so a friend was suggesting I see a rewire while I was suggesting a mechanic. Please engineers in d house, educate us.
most african people, dont understand the art of car maintanance and with misuse of a car for the wrong job shortens the life of the engine or the body
was reading here, one serviced his car by washing the plugs, there are certain parts on cars that need regular change with new parts, not scavaging the same old
pawsofdikeje: Kindly assist me guys. I performed a servicing exercise on my mitsubishi galant 2003 model on Saturday. I changed the engine oil, oil filter and also washed the plug with petrol. Afterwards, i noticed the engine has not been performing well cause it keeps giving me a misfiring sound before it swerves into full motion after a change of gear.
Will appreciate your input.
plugs dont get washed they get changed with new ones
so buy new ones and replace all the old ones you washed
there are 3 basic rules to follow on oil assuming you are buying a reputable brand oil
1 know average winter morning temperatures (hence number like 0w 5w 15 w) the number represent how thick is oil in winter morning, the lower the number thinner it is in very cold morning the thinner it is the quick it get pumped up to various parts the less wear and tear during start up and driving before operating temperature, so then higher number before W eg 20w the thick it is in a cold morning, so the thicker it is the more time it takes to get to the various part the more tear and wear occurs
2 follow your manufacturer guide as they know what type oil is good for those oil passages at certain temperatures
these oils are a mixture of three things 1 how fast it gets to parts at cold start 2 how thin it is at operating temperature too think is not good at operating tempetarature as it would squeezed off completely from parts that press on each therefore wear and occure , oil should a cushion it cant when it too thin while hot so the other number eg 05w 30, 30 represents how thin is oil at operating temperature though this was measured at 100 degrees, so the higher the number the more thinner at 100
Your query isn't clear. And I don't understand your mileage.
he is saying his car uses more oil when he drives long distance
generally we say his car is burning oil roughly oil rings are gone there arw letting oil into the combustation chamber, if not there is a seal gone letting oil into the combustation system
the mileage thing, generally mileage tell us how the car has been so the higher the mileage the higher we expect the oil seals/rings to be gone though it varies due to how well was the kept i.e service
