Nairaland is a funny place. grin

Yesterday, there was a similar post about a dog show/carnival in Ghana and virtually all of the comments were gushingly positive (apart from of course the weird humor that some apparently share about eating dogs - something Koreans and Chinese know a thing or two about), without the snide and snarky remarks visited on this thread or anyone bitching about only the top 1% being able to afford dogs (which of course is a crap assertion). Why exactly are Nigerians increasingly becoming such self-haters? SMH

Immediately I saw the headline, I knew it was going to be a male student. And I was right! There are too many badly raised boys in the society today.

Many African (Nigerian) parents spend more time grooming the girls, and leaving the boys unchecked. They eventually grow up to be a menace to the society.

There are many of them on this platform. They are the same ones that look for any opportunity to trash women. Wait, they will soon be here to blame the teacher for smiling too much undecided
Hit it squarely on the head!

Although this is probably just a case of misguided adolescence, the sad reality is that there’s always an underlying culture of male entitlement in our paternal culture. Lots of dudes think women should be honored by their romantic (or even amorous) attention. SMH
PoliticsRe: 91 Million Nigerians Now Living In Extreme Poverty - World Poverty Clock by 9jaRealist: 11:55pm On Feb 14, 2019
This so-called "World Poverty Clock" is a whole lot of HOGWASH!

I realize that it serves the interest of some to simply regurgitate this narrative, but for apolitical types like us seeking useful empirical tools the only scenario in which this is even remotely valid is that extremely-poor people in Nigeria never die and nobody ever moves up the income ladder. Furthermore, NOBODY knows the population of Nigeria, so how can these Parachute Analysts know the population of any segment within? We need to generate better and more reliable data in Nigeria rather than keep pulling numbers out of the nether regions.
FamilyRe: Woman Divorces Husband 3 Minutes After Marriage In Kuwait For Calling Her Stupid by 9jaRealist: 11:31pm On Feb 14, 2019
AlexReports:
There are certain records you wouldn’t like to be associated with. This is probably one of them.

A newly-wed couple in Kuwait recently made history for having the shortest marriage in the country’s existence. They decided to go call it quits only three minutes after getting married.

The media in Kuwaiti, last month, reported the bizarre case of a couple who ended their marriage before even leaving the courthouse they got married in. The two had just signed their marriage contract in front of a judge and were walking out of the courthouse when the bride accidentally tripped. Instead of helping her up, the groom reportedly insulted his wife by calling her “stupid” for slipping. That was apparently too much for the woman to bear, so she turned around and asked the judge to dissolve their marriage on the spot. They had been married for only three minutes.

According to Q8 News, this was the fastest divorce in the history of Kuwait, and probably of the whole world.

The news of this record-breaking divorce went viral on Twitter last week, with most commenters joking and ridiculing the couple for wasting the judge’s time. Some, however, took the bride’s side, saying that she made the right call. If the groom insulted her so early into their marriage, who knows what he would have done later on, one person wrote.

“If this is how he acts right at the beginning, it’s better to leave him,” one Twitter user commented.

“A marriage with no respect, is a failed one right from the beginning,” another one added.

Some suspected that the bride was simply looking for an excuse for the quick divorce, which isn’t that far-fetched considering Kuwait’s problem with “interest-driven marriages”.

According to an article in the Arab Times, the loans and financial assistance provided by the state to newly-married couples has caused the divorce rate in the Middle-Eastern country to skyrocket in recent years.

Many young people tie the knot only to benefit from the state’s incentives, and then quickly file for divorce. It’s obviously not the only reported cause for divorce in Kuwait, but it’s definitely one of the most worrying ones.

http://wakkinews.com/2019/02/10/woman-divorces-husband-three-minutes-after-marriage/
Yes, Kuwaiti national couples receive about $200,000 or thereabouts when they get married, as well as a house or money for a house, because the government is desperately trying to change the demographics of the country where Kuwaiti nationals only constitute about 30% or so of the resident population. Thus, marriage can be a rather lucrative business arrangement (if it does not drive you crazy you first).

I believe the billionaire Cosmas Maduka of Choscharis dropped out of primary school at the age of 6, following the death of his father, and started hawking Akara (bean) balls to help support his mother and family. Subsequently, he went on to do an apprenticeship with an uncle and thereafter venture into trading. Of course, after he had become wealthy and successful much later in life, he proceeded to Harvard Business School for an Executive Education Program.

Another billionaire Razak Okoya of Eleganza Industries’ only had primary school education (and unsure if he even completed that or dropped out midway).

Both are NOT mutually-exclusive.

Nonetheless, while I realize that Nigerians are used to the windfall of governments just sharing mostly oil money that is extracted largely by foreigners and largely from the despoiling of the indigenous economy of the Niger Delta (farming and fisheries), it should actually be economic ACTIVITY (including the creative and entertainment industry) that ideally would generate the tax and other government revenues to fund the fixing of these schools - while creating JOBS in the process (which students are going to need when they graduate).

2.38%? *rolls eyes* shocked

Not a PDP supporter, but in Jonathan’s “worst” years the GDP grew 6-7%. Meanwhile, any less revenue from oil has been more than made up for with the MASSIVE INCREASE in borrowing by the Buhari government (with debt service now at about 66%). That’s not exactly fiscal magic.

By “empower” one presumes you mean sharing money to poor folks, like the N5k that Buhari has been bribing poor Northerners with. undecided

Conversely, even though I am personally wary of politicians, promoting concerts like these and the creative industry generally is a much better means of actually empowering citizens by creating jobs and generating wealth (as well as tax revenue for the government) along the entire creative value chain - from set designers, sound engineers, lighting designers and engineers, electricians, builders, artisans, security, suppliers, food vendors, fashion designers, tailors, drivers, transporters, and so many others. Economic ACTIVITY empowers people, not charity!

All they actually owe you is their taxes, not to satisfy your culture of entitlement to the wealth of others. undecided

Meanwhile, Dangote is “creating problems” by creating employment and livelihoods (directly and indirectly) for TENS OF THOUSANDS OF NIGERIANS all across the country (and not just in his village or state, like so many other Nigerians), generating wealth along the entire value chain, and billions in corporate and income tax revenues for the government to (hopefully) invest in social infrastructure such as education and healthcare. How one wishes that Mr. Sowore and other card-carrying members of the chattering class would create similar “problems”. SMH

From your comment you've never been to the north.

Perhaps you are generalizing because of those cobbler Mallams and beggers you see on the southern streets begging for alms. That alone would not give the true picture of northern Nigeria.

Places like

Kaduna
Kano
Gombe
Yola
Bauchi
Jos
Mina etc are far better than some of the southern states I've been to.

Even Maiduguri is ahead of some southern states. Forget about what media have been feeding you with. Maiduguri is a beautiful city in spite the insurgency.
Bros, personally I am not one to generalize, not least because while I have personally been several places in the North, I would NOT consider myself an authority on life in the North. Nonetheless, it’s not about a handful of cities (such as the ones you have listed) and/or a few rich folks or feudal families substantively isolated in (and sometimes insulated from) the midst of jarring poverty, illiteracy and slums. It’s about an estimated 92% poverty rate in Zamfara and an estimated 80+% poverty rate in a supposedly “rich” state like Kano (2016 UN estimates, and also figures recently recited by the Emir of Kano), as opposed (for instance) to an estimated less than 10% poverty rate in Lagos (same 2016 UN estimates). It’s about the millions of Almajiri children roaming the streets (even in the cities that you listed such as Kano and Kaduna), the shockingly high infant mortality rate (often the product of early marriage of largely uneducated girls), and so many other relatively more OBJECTIVE criteria (with the caveat however that I am personally suspicious of any figures/data in Nigeria). Unfortunately, we will never be able to begin to properly address our problems and shortcomings unless and until we recognize and acknowledge same.

Will you keep quiet? Soludo and Iweala all predicted recession no matter who wins between Jonathan and Buhari in 2011 because Jonathan failed to save during the time of plentiful coupled with the falling crude oil price. Abi you were living under rock then?
While a recession was virtually INEVITABLE in the midst of the global financial crisis and the so-called Great Recession that followed in its wake and which affected every part of the world (and frankly EVERY country to differing degrees), regardless of what Jonathan did (which although it might have mitigated its effects was unlikely to have prevented an economic slide because the Nigerian economy does not operate in isolation of global events), Buhari’s inertia and apparent economic illiteracy WORSENED and amplified the recession for Nigeria.

First, it took Sai Baba six months simply to constitute an economic team (as part of a cabinet), and then his initially backward foreign exchange policies led to a catastrophic crash in exchange rates (down to as low as N520/$1) in a primarily import-dependent economy (where machinery, equipment and even essential raw materials are imported, as well as stupidly fuel to drive the economy), and scared away scores of foreign investment and attendant foreign currency inflows that would have stabilized the currency and given Nigeria a fighting chance against recession. Ultimately, it was not until April 2017 when the CBN introduced the more liberal IE (Investors and Exporters) forex window that the Naira stabilized and the economy subsequently started growing again (albeit anemic) after 2 years of locust caused by economic illiteracy/incompetence.

Sai Baba. Despite earning 60% less than Jonathan due to fall in the price of crude oil from 110 dollars per barrel under Jonathan to a paltry 50 dollars under APC administration yet Buhari has done much more. Baba 2much projects, na next level we dey go jare. God bless Buhari.

Jonathan sank us into recession by looting us dry during the time of plentiful.

Despite Buhari administration earning 60% less yet he's come up with plenty projects such as

Our railways at itakpewarri, Lagos-ibadan, kaduna-abuja etc,

The production of low cost fertilizers,

Zik maoseleum

Baro inland port,

Rice mills,

Foreign reserve increase from #26b to #43b,

Construction of our express highways such as enuguonitsha, Lagos-ibadan etc.

Social policy schemes such as tradermoni, npower etc

And most especially, stabilizing us through this recession which happened because jonathan failed to save despite earning 60% more than Buhari coupled with the fall in the price of crude oil from #110 per barrel in 5 years under Jonathan to a paltry #50 per barrel under Buhari administration yet Buhari was able to keep us afloat while having many projects to his name thereby surprising Ngozi Iweala and Charles Soludo who predicted recession because jonathan failed to save during the time of plentiful.

Sai Baba. PDP, Neva again.
Simply borrowing MORE to overcome less earnings isn’t exactly fiscal magic.

Our debt has grown so rapidly over the past 3 years, that the FG now uses about 66 kobo of every Naira that it earns to service debt. In fact, we are now borrowing to service our borrowing - in effect, merely kicking the can down the road for future administrations/generations. SMH
