Mad Cow: Twenty Policemen to arrest a person over a debt = EXAGGERATION..
7-Month old Baby in a Nigerian Cell = Police Brutality
Arresting a person over a civil issue such as a bad debt = Over-stepping of boundaries
THE NIGERIAN POLICE HAS NO BUSINESS ACTING AS A LOAN RETRIVING AGENCY..
This again brings me back to education 101..
ALWAYS GET YOURSELF A LAWYER: When once you are arrested by the Police wherever you are (home & abroad), as soon as you make that phone call, make sure the next words out of your mouth after the location Police Station is 'COME WITH A LAWYER'..
Know your rights. 7 Days in Police custody can only happen because you did not get yourself a lawyer. The Police cannothold a suspect for more than 24hours without charging him/her to court. Except its a case for murder.
- Putting a nursing mother and her baby behind bars is a big crime. The woman should get herself a great lawyer and file criminal charges against the police and also bring a civil suit against them where she can claim damages..
THE NIGERIAN POLICE FEAR LAWYERS... #Fact Bro, in Nigeria, it's cheaper to bribe (bail) the police than to hire a lawyer. Claiming damages in 9ja court? I laugh in ALUU You can only succeed if there is someone connected behind you, that is the reality in 9ja. Whole families are arrested for an offense committed by one person. Not because they are accomplices before or after the fact. But it increases the bail amount the police can collect. Do you think if people have been succeeding in suing the police for damages and claims in 9ja courts, the police will still be highhanded? |
Business › Re: Why Do Businesses Fail In Nigeria? by agitator: 5:03pm On Nov 19, 2012 |
Nashville: Businesses in Nigeria fail for the following reasons
1. High Cost of Operations - This is one of the biggest killers of Nigerian Businesses. It just makes our products uncompetitive when it comes to pricing. It is always cheaper to import and resell. Cost of labour is not very expensive but infrastructure like Nepa, providing Security and even bribes makes it difficult.
2. Policy Changes - Our government has not been consistent with Policy formulation. Regime after regime, policies just change overnight and put businesses in danger. Sanusi alone in 3 years has implemented 25 far reaching policy changes, so businesses cannot operate effectively in such climates
3. Corruption - Businesses die to the fact that they have to bribe. Unfortunately some people with integrity cannot do such things so their businesses may die and sometimes the cost of bribery reduces potential profits to nothing.
4. Security - Lack of adequate security to protect infrastructure and equipments.
5. Management - We have very few great managers in Nigeria. We all plan for the short term, try to make quick and easy money today while disregarding the long term. So lack of skilled management is a problem. So several businesses start well but end badly due to mismanagement
6. Succession Planning - One the owner retires, no one is able to take over from him and run the company with the same vigour and vision. The person that takes over may just wanna get rich quick.
7. Values System - We generally have poor maintenance systems. We lack foresight and cant plan for the future. Greed is also a major problem with our society! good Add 8. Arrogance of the owner when the business is successful. 9. Reducing the quality in Products based business, eg. Iphone improving every year, but in nigeria the price will be increasing while the quality will be reduced to make more profit. Eventually when people are tired or have alternative they dump the product. |
Nairaland General › Re: Are The Young People Of Today Very Lazy And Materialistic? by agitator: 9:48am On Nov 17, 2012 |
pro01: It is indeed true that many, if not most, young people these days are lazy and materialistic. However, the materialism didn't start with the present generation of youngsters; it's a deep-rooted social problem, not a generational one. In Nigeria, everyone - old and young - judges you based on your material possessions and/or accomplishments; nothing else really matters. OK
In terms of laziness, however, the current generation of young people in Nigeria are hopelessly beyond redemption. You see them shamelessly using text-speak even in formal writing (some use it in examinations and job applications!). You see them complaining that certain posts on Nairaland are "too long", thus exposing their mental laziness and aversion to reading. You see them seeking shortcuts and the easy way out in almost every situation.
In a sense, it is also true that things are easier for the present generation (at least in terms of knowledge acquisition and task completion) how? In their days, admission letters were sent by post to successful university entrants. For instance, it is now possible to access all the textbooks and materials one needs for their research, assignment, etc. entirely on the internet. Yes, but they also borrowed books from people who already graduated or have passed a level, but now you must purchase whatever trash the lecturer publishes, otherwise your failure has already started. So why read when i can pay and pass instead of reading and failing? In times past, final year students used to travel great lengths across Nigeria (e.g. From Uniport to UI) just to look for materials for their research projects. In spite of the advantages associated with the Internet and modern technologies, the quality of education seems to be getting worse - simply because people are too lazy (and too distracted) to commit any effort.
If you look at our uncles and aunties that had the privilege of tertiary education in the 60's, 70's, and to some extent 80's, you would notice that they generally seem more sophisticated and speak better English than many of our contemporaries in the present generation. This is quite ironic, considering that the older generation had to go through the ordeals of using hardcover dictionaries, learning from 'slates', etc., whereas we have the luxury of smartphones and the Internet to make learning relatively easier for us. |

Christianity Etc › Re: Benny Hinn & Pat Robertson, The False Prophets Of The U.S 2012 Election by agitator: 3:12pm On Nov 09, 2012 |
God2man: Unfulfilled prophecies abound in the Bible, God told hezekiah that he will die, but hezekiah prayed and wept before the Lord for a reversal and the same God gave him 15 more years. The truth is the manifestation of divine prophecies are not automatic, atimes, it takes time, at other time, the reverse may be the case. They are all subject to the various factors. In my own opinion, i mean the US election, there was a possibilty for Romney to emerge as the winner of the election. Unfortunately, something mysterious happened along the line that changed the movement, probably due to his own fault or due to the disruption caused by the hurricane sandy that created an obstacle for his last campaign to hold. Only God can unravel the mysteries.
Those men of God could be right, let's be objective in whatever we are saying. Let's take it easy.
Calling them a false prophet is too degrading. What do we gain? Nothing. Does it edify anybody? No. Then whyy are we criticizing them. I read two different books by two different men of God, one gave a not too good historical background of a man of God, the other one countered the statement. Now, is it good for me to come to the internet and start calling them liars? No! If i do that, it shows that i am not mature, i consider their imperfection as normal thing to be expected from a man made with clay.
Whenever we are criticizing men of God on this forum, let's try to examine ourselves first before criticizing them. As i always say on this forum, what goes round comes around.
God bless you all. God2man. Evangelizing and winning souls is not easy. Please don't chase away the ones that have been won over to Christ with this your rubb!5h post. Hurricane Sandy subverting God's plan? |

Travel › Re: 70's And 80's : Nigeria Was Among The Top 20 Choice Destinations by agitator: 11:33am On Nov 08, 2012 |
naptu2: Serious oil exploration began in the 1970s (the Gowon era), around the time when the arab-israeli crisis was at its height. This meant that we had record high oil prices. Nigeria made a lot of money. Unfortunately, we also spent a lot of money.
People were being employed into the civil service to do jobs that did not add any value to the economy. As soon as you graduated you could easily get a job in the civil service, with a car and official house in Ikoyi (and later Festac and Satellite towns). The government took over lots of private companies (Daily Times, etc) and sunk money into them. We did not save for the rainy day. Instead of diversifying, the government was taking over profitable private companies and running them down such that, by the end of the 1970s, we were running a mono-economy (oil accounted for almost 90% of revenue).
In the early '80s the US ensured that the price of oil fell. The encouraged Saudi Arabia to flood the market with oil. They also encouraged peace treaties between Israel and Egypt, Israel and Jordan, etc.
The economy first showed signs of trouble around 1982. The price of oil (which provided about 90% of revenue) collapsed. The government introduced austerity measures. Some food items disappeared from breakfast and dinner tables. People started complaining (thinking about it now, we never knew how bad things would be later on). The 1983 elections+the economic problems led to the fall of Shagari's government (it didn't help that politicians were throwing lavish parties at 1004, importing prostitutes and buying long wheel base limousines).
Buhari came in and tried to stabilise the economy by force. Companies were made to advertise retail prices of their products. Soldiers went into the markets to enforce such prices (for example, if lever brothers advertises a retail price of 30k for lux soap and a trader is seen selling it above 30k, the soldiers would seize his goods and distribute them to the public for free). They changed the currency overnight, so that politicians couldn't take stolen money abroad. They also placed limits on overseas trips and the amount of money you could take out of the country. Buhari refused to take the IMF loan and accept their conditions because the government felt that it would impinge on our sovereignty. Some of these measures worked, while some failed.
Babangida came in and implemented SAP (probably the most hated government policy ever). People might want to kill me when I say that the SAP idea was not a bad idea theoretically. The fact is, it's not, but it was definitely not suitable for Nigeria of 1986. The idea was that the government should ban imports, encourage local industries and devalue the currency so that our exports would be cheaper.
The reality was that the government had taken over most of the major private firms, such that we didn't have indigenous private companies to take advantage of this policy. We had government companies and foreign companies.
Nigerians depended on imports. We went to the big department stores to buy cheap easily affordable/available imported goods. Even the poorest civil servant could afford these luxuries. SAP put these goods beyond the reach of most Nigerians.
The naira was suddenly and radically devalued (I remember Punch Newspaper's cartoon of the naira in a boxing ring, being knocked out by the dollar). The kobo became absolutely useless. People learnt a new form of arithmetic, I.e the 1-0-1, 0-1-0, 0-0-1, etc (breakfast, no lunch, dinner; no breakfast, lunch, no dinner). I think one of the biggest and most wide spread riots in Nigeria must have been the SAP riots of 1988. People were fed up! They almost got to Dodan Barracks!
Manufacturing companies closed down because they couldn't get cheap imported raw materials. The big department stores closed down because they couldn't afford to stock imported goods (the fall in the value of the naira meant that the masses couldn't afford the goods). Nigeria experienced de-industrialisation (Berec Batteries, Volkswagen of Nigeria and many other factories closed down).
Our value system also collapsed. Corruption became the rule, rather than the exception. There was no shame in it anymore. Honesty was seen as a sign of stupidity.
Things have improved since the return to civilian rule, but they have not improved fast enough and sometimes it seems we lack direction. We now have Nigerian brands that can take advantage of a SAP (Glo, Silverbird, Oando, AIT, etc), but the corruption, abuse of office and violence of the second republic has returned. Nigerians are disillusioned. People we're once very proud to be Nigerians. That pride is absent now. The riots broke out as a result of the Babangida govt preaching SAP and promising nigerians we will soon get to the promised land, only for people to realize that he had been taking us for a ride. What eventually triggered the riots eventually was a publication in Enony Magazine that IBB's wife owned the most sophisticated up-to-date salon in Paris, France. |

Joagbaje: Samuel was very sure he was hearing from God , and was about to anoint a wrong man as king. But God had to stop him.
1 Samuel 16:7 When they had come, he looked on Eliab [the eldest son] and said, Surely the Lord’s anointed is before Him. 7 But the Lord said to Samuel, Look not on his appearance or at the height of his stature, for I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees; for man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.
If samuel had gone ahead to anoint elihab in error. Would that make samuel a false prophet ? No. It is crooked guys like you that are turnign good Christians into atheist and questioning the word of God. How can you quote the bible wrongly to support your lopsided argument. The prophecy God gave to Samuel (1 Samuel 16 vs 1. "And the Lord said unto Samuel, How long wilt thou mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? Fill thine horn with oil, and go, I will send thee to Jesse the Bethlehemite: for I have provided me a king among his sons." Here the son wasn't mentioned and Samuel used his judgment thinking it was the first son. I don't like debating about God's Holy Book. |
