CultureRe: Exclusion Of Father In Her Daughter Traditional Marriage. by AndreUweh(m): 10:49am On Nov 26, 2011
Let's hope it is not in Igbo trad marriage.
In Igbo trad marriage, marriage is about the father and household as well as Umunna. Without the father, Umunnna will not be involved and without Umunna, no marriage.

PoliticsRe: Nigeria's First Military Coup by AndreUweh(m): 7:38pm On Nov 25, 2011
The crisis in the then western Nigeria led the first coup. The Balewa led administration could not help matters and the young military boys felt they will do better.
In short, the 1965 western Nigerian imbroglio was the real cause.

One_naira, it shall be well with you. The same advice you have giving to Agbontaen has been handed to him several times. Even Ogbuefi, a proud Ikaman and a proud Igboman from Igbodo has done same but chap is stubborn.
Sometime in june last year, I was part of an Igbo youth delegation that visited the Obi of Owa in South west London. What Agbontaen is writing here is contrary to the monarch's belief of his people. The Obi even adviced us to include more Ika people in our activities.
There is no doubt about the IGBONESS of Aniocha/Oshimiri people. Just pockets of denials in the Ika/ Ukwuani axis, it could be up to 12% of the people, But since Uwechue's tenure at the apex Igbo organisation and Jim Ovia's speech at the last Ikenga awards in Owerri, the denials has reduced greatly. I don't think there up to 8% who sitll deny Igbo.

grin grin grin grin grin grin No they are all born again Christians and do not commit sin/adultery

Oh, so they worship the almighty God in the shrines lipsrsealed. Thank God we now know.
What about all the stones, woods and other objects that are being bowed for and painted in colours, labelled with feathers or greased in palm oil in all your shrines? Please give us a public relations lecture on them as regards alaigbo.
No one here has stated that Ndigbo are all born again christians, neither has anyone claimed that they are all christians. It seems you have lost your reading glasses again.
No one bows to those relics in Igboland. Ndigbo has always worshipped God before the advent of christianity. Shrines are not places Ndigbo worship God. They can worship God anywhere.
The purpose of those shrines mostly in Igboland is for justice attainment. One may find out about strange occurences also.
But you have to be careful when you visit the shrines as they are sacred.
Note that I did not start this thread to lecture anyone about the activities of shrines in Igboland, but to debate on the way forward for justice in Igboland as congregational prayers and modern day court judiciary systems have been slow in acting.
I did not start this thread that am an authority in that field but to learn also from fellow Ndigbo.

1. We are existing now as a people. I can happily stay in Enugu and feel at home because I am in "Igboland" the land of the Igbos. Same way that I can also happily stay in Kwale or Owerre or Aba and feel at home because I am in the land of the Igbo people.

2. Honestly, I can't explain it to you. It's something internal. Something just shouldn't e endeavored.
You cant say a rotweiler is not a dog since a rotweiler is a type of dog. Neither can you say I am not an Igbo but this or that. Atleast that's the way it is in my head.

The reason I'm saying this is because that's the way i see things. You don't necessarily have to agree with me. We can't think of ourselves as different people because our unity is our strength and without that we are finished. Then again, Ngwa is large enough to be a large minority in Nigeria. But were I to choose a motto as yours, it would be "Igbom gadi ogha anwu".

I hope you see what I mean. Our people say "Ohabuike" and "Ezi na ulo owula kewara onweya n'egwu iliya"
Because of the bolded, May your days be long.

Am kinda of curious, please enlighten me on the difference between 'ibo' and 'igbo' and BTW your sounding so touchy! Or I should leave your igbo thread?
Very funny
Your contributions are welcomed. For the purpose of this thread, maintain Igbo at all time and that is what it is. The issue of Igbo or Ibo has been discussed a lot in this forum. You hardly see any Igbo or any elite Igbo who spells Ibo.
Back to the thread,
There are so many oppressors in our society and the oppressed will resort for shrine intervention. Most of the time the oppressors will refuse going to the shrines claiming religious. Some of the defaulters always have strong voices because they know people on top seats of authority. You can agree with me that most Ndigbo want instant action , which can only be obtained in shrines.
CultureRe: Shrines And Justice In Igbo Culture. by AndreUweh(op): 9:59pm On Nov 22, 2011
Personally, am not against the advent of Christianity in Igboland, my worry is that the christian justice system has failed the Igbo nation. Or politicians are so corrupt because we have not applied the shrine system to deter them. Richmen steal from the poor and yet nothing happens. Our christian brothers will only tell the poor that God's time is the best.
In relation to the shrine system, I have not seen or heard of any person punished by shrine without him bringing about it

@ifyalways

I nearly rolled on the floor, after reading your post grin. Really the white man's Jesus is so powerful we've lost our identities, am on a research and the things I find are absolutely amazing. I'm tracing all the movement of the yoruba and ibo slaves during the trans-atlantic slavery period and the results am getting are amazing. The yoruba and ibos descedant in brazil, jamaica, cuba and the carribeans held on to their gods and beliefs while we at home has carried Islam and christianity on our head. I think the yoruba descedants held more firmly to their gods and divinities that you still hear, sango <chango>,ogun etc and the rest in those countries today. The white man is a master in making other races feel inferior!

Well I believe in God sha, The first cause, the one before the big-b.ang, the ultimate and all wise Supreme Being!
When I introduced this thread, I did not type Ibo. Why not spell Igbo as others have done.

I think we Igbos shuld modify our shrines by  removing all the fetishes and inhuman items attached to it and modernizing it and making them a temple with a house where we worship "CHUKWU OKIKE“

Chei!! My mumm is gonna weep if she hear me say above things!! Lol
Your ideas are noted, however me thinks that the relics found in those places has a symbolism. They are also not worshipped in Igboland.

Isn't that what Okija was all about?
Shrines are concerned about sanity but man on earth has been violating the environment they met intact including shrines. I do not know much about Okija but what I mean here is that everything, we also have fakes.

"For the LORD is great, and greatly to be praised: he is to be feared above all gods. For all the gods of the nations are idols: but the LORD made the heavens. Honour and majesty are before him: strength and beauty are in his sanctuary." - Psa 96:4-6

"He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he." - Deut 32:4
This thread is about bringing justice to the society. Shrines in Igbolands is not idol to my understanding then the oppressed is right to seek redress and refuge in them. Don't you think so?.

I thought you are all devout catholics. So, you visit the shrine on Saturday and attend mass on Sunday?
Not all Ndigbo are catholics. Some belong to the Anglican communion, Methodist, Saviours Evangelical mission, E.C.W.A, Cherubim, Igbo trad religion etc.
Note that Ndigbo do not worship wood, stone and other relics in those shrines. It seems in your own part of the world, it is the other way round.

Abagworo:
@agbotaen. I think it is best you focus on displaying the rich culture of the Ika than looking for reasons why they are not Igbo. Unknown to you Ezeagu is an Ika man from Agbor.

Mind you Ikas even argue among themselves about this Igbo issue without conclusive ending. An example is you,Ogbuefi and Ezeagu. You are from Owa,Ezeagu from Agbor and Ogbuefi from Igbodo. Ezeagu and Ogbuefi believe they are Igbos but you don't. So let the Ika-Igbo or Ika-Ika issue rest for good and focus on displaying the Ika culture.
Well said Abagworo. The chap is very repepetive. What he said today, he will also say 2morrow. Am so bored of him.

Jenifa_:
Achebe is more popular because of his book "Things fall apart." This book has broad appeal. mostly because it's simplistic like poster above me said.
Soyinka on the other hand specializes in drama and poetry. He speaks on different topics from nigerian politics to apartheid etc. His audience is narrower, understandably. but his works are, to me,way more sophisticated.

that's too bad.
I prefer Soyinka too.
What is too bad?. Do you mean the empty seats at the London theatre?.

The Igbo worldview is the belief that shrines are existing beings here on earth before human beings. They are more powerful than man. They are more powerful than any Igbo because they are in charge of natural occurences. Ndigbo believes that they obey God in disharging their duties.

There are so many shrines in Igboland and Eastern Nigeria. Does the works and and actions of these shrines portray justice. Do you believe they really exist. Who are the oppressed and who are the oppressors in Igboland. Who patronises this shrines or makes them relevant?.
Ndigbo believe that Almighty God is the only perfect justice; but what narrow mindedness do Igbo men have toward these shrines?

I do not like this thread because both Achebe and Soyinka are famous writers. Because of my love for Soyinka's plays, I went to a theatre last year in London to watch one of his plays, to my greatest surprice, the theatre was virtually empty.
Then, in conferences meant for Achebe's works in London, it is always a sale out.
Despite the fact that Achebe is more globally celebrated, I and Soyinka has a lot in common.
