Majority of our people have lived in the bush called Nigeria all their lives, so they have come to believe that everyone would drop to their primitive standards. Breaking News: Oliseh is a decent human being who believes that he should not engage in bribery and corruption in order to coach a nation of cows who have convinced themselves that they are human beings. You forgot to add that when Britain privatised water supply in the eighties, they discovered that more older people were dying due to their lack of access to clean pipe borne water as a result of higher rates charged by the water companies. The govt had to intervene to give concessions to the elderly so that they could still get water supply at minimal or subsidised rates. In a few places, the high rates were even revoked.

Sadly, in this country we privatise blindly without examining carefully the pros and cons, or conducting a long term analysis of the effects of such privatisation, on the populace. We keep forgetting to take a look at lessons learnt from other countries and sectors, and we tout privatisation as a 'cure-all' for every form of ailment we have in this country.

When the DISCOs took over PHCN's assets, didn't they know how much it would cost to upgrade such facilities and how long (and at what cost) it would take them to generate power using the existing facilities?

You know that you have not answered my question, but it`s ok. The truth is, everything Nigeria is doing today, Britain has been doing since 1970s, so we know where blind privatization is going to lead. US an UK are the indisputable kings of privatization. The same US and UK are the most unequal countries in the West, Describing America and London as Apartheid States would be very apt, when we talk of economic inequality. The most important factor common with them is that everything is privatised. In London, everything is in private hand, but still government is spending billions of pounds to boost infrastructure while the Dangotes of London go home with the profits. And that is where Nigeria is going; blind privatisation handing over the economy to a couple of individuals, who promise heaven and earth in the beginning, only to tell government and society later that they need more money from them to do the business. In other words, losses shared by the people while profits are shared by a couple of billionaires. The reason why ours is worse is that when Brits and Americans privatise, their economies still stay in their hands, but when Nigeria privatised our economy go to the West. The way forward is not blind privatisation but govt and private sector getting together like it`s done in the best countries in the world.

15 years ago, even with very low network penetration, we allowed GSM companies to charge Nigerians N25k for SIM cards and N50/min for calls. The companies were excited because that price compensated for their investment risk. They invested billions of dollars in infrastructure, employing thousands of Nigerians and supporting thousands of vendors. Today, SIM cards are less than N100 and calls are less than N7/min. Today, you can practically receive calls from every nook and cranny of the country.

The actions of the Senate can only work when trying to force the hand of the Executive, not arm twisting private businesses. The private companies have already invested some money in paying for licenses and setting up offices. GENCOs have invested in buying or building power plants. Investments on further infrastructure will need to come from customer receipts. You don't expect them to go to their bank to borrow money for long term investment without clarity on revenue expectations.

Any example of a country that privatized this sector wholly, the way you are suggesting, that is enjoying that low tariff right now?

Her rantings would not change anything because when Obasanjo was there, Yorubas dominated Nigeria with no Yoruba shouting tribalism or marginalisation. Then Goodluck got there, the South-South dominated Nigeria without them remembering tribalism. Hausa/Fulani shouted tribalism and marginalization during the time of Obasanjo and Jonathan and responded with Sharia and Boko Haram. I lived in Holland and left there long ago, so won`t be able to help you on Austria. If it`s the case that you are in Holland and trying to cross to Austria, I don`t think you would have much problem because, if I`m not mistaken, Austria is part of Schengen. In case you are in Nigeria contemplating which non-English speaking country to go, it`s my humble opinion that you should limit yourself to Holland, Germany and the Scandinavians unless of course money is an issue. When you go to any of these countries to study, you can be certain that you will never go to any countries that are better run than them, I think that is an added advantage. I would also advise you to only go to a non-English speaking country if you don`t have the opportunity to go to the UK, US, Canada, Australia or New Zealand.
Wherever you are going as a prospective student, also try to learn something like barbing while in Nigeria, that might come handy as a source of income before you sort yourself out. Sorry that I couldn`t answer your specific question. Good luck

All of you should also know that UK is the only English speaking country in Europe and this matters if you are from English speaking country. English is widely spoken in Holland and the Scandinavian countries but English is not their official language.
As far as work is concerned, don`t deceive yourself expecting office work anywhere in a non-English speaking country, 95% of times it doesn`t happen.
Goes without saying that if you are in Holland and stay in their big cities, things would be more expensive for you. The big cities in Holland are Amsterdam. De Hague, Rotterdam and Utrecht. Generally speaking, work is difficult to find in the North, that is around Gronnigen area, but if you are in Delft you stand a better chance around Brabant. Enjoy Holland, it`s one of the best-run countries in the world with zero level of corruption and official criminality that is common in London and USA.
I mentioned it elsewhere, if you want to live in Holland after your studies, better start going out to meet Dutch girls to get married to.. Good luck to you all
