So we should do away with federal character then?

We will start with unity school cut off and end up with employment in federal agencies. We should base everything on competence and lets know who will cry first.
I'm all for scrapping federal character.

I pity a lot of people because they do not understand the sought of politics that goes on
in nigeria, i have been in the middle of more than 5 religious crisis in the north, having more of your people in power at times like that comes in very handy, am not going to say more, but i pray more people see where all this is going, especially those whose live have never been on the line for the faith they choose
Are we not supposed to be moving away from all those things?
Are we not supposed to be moving towards a Nigeria that works?

If your answer to the above is yes, isn't it high time we tried something different?
OBJ used federal character, Yar'Adua used it, GEJ used it yet we still don't have light or working refineries.
At what point do we as a nation say enough is enough, let's do the right thing?

Agreed, but bro, Buhari is not just the president of his 'born and bread' North or the people he is is used to. He is the president of all Nigerian ethnic groups. Every part of Nigeria has a right to feel belonged in his Government. We need to build trust and harmony among all ethnics group until we get to a point we see ourselves as one like it obtained in US today.

You should not be President of Nigeria if you cannot build bridges across ethnics group. I dont want Buhari to be seen as Northern president, I want him to be seen as a Nigerian president.
The only way to build trust and harmony in Nigeria is to get things working.
Even if you appoint someone from every village in Nigeria, if the common man on the street still believes "you must know somebody to get things" done, there'll be know trust. Our distrust stems from the failed state of things in Nigeria.

Many here know that I have been a strong supporter of Buhari since 2011, and I still believe he is by far better than Jonathan. But truth be told, his appointments get k-leg and the OP has a point.

We can not pretend that balancing appointments in a country that is highly volatile on ethnic sentiments like Nigeria is nothing. We are not USA or UK. Except GMB thinks no competent people can be found from other region which you and I know cannot be true.

I know competence should come before ethnicity but we can get competent people everywhere if we search diligently, so what stops GMB from getting only competent people while at the same time balancing his appointment.

I still keep faith with him, but truth be told he is playing the script of those who labelled him an ethnic bigot and I wish he chooses to be wiser and more sensitive. We know what followed the man that said he doesn't give a damm... I hope GMB gives a damm about these things..
Competence is just one part of the criteria and if we were to give it a score, I'd say competence takes 20% - 30% percent.
There's things like trust, ability to work together et al.

Buhari was born and bred in the north, you should know and expect that his most trusted allies would be northerners.

Right, but that is still not to say that there are no honourable and very capable southerners who can be trusted in the helm of affairs.
Are northerners truly that incorruptible? This your song will change down the line, i bet you, just wait and see.
I haven't said there are no capable southerners or northerners are the only incorruptible people.
As a matter of fact, if it had turned out differently from how it's playing out, then I'll had concluded that Buhari was joking.

Why do we seem to worry where who gets appointed comes from, we act like this appointments automatically "come and chop" rather than "come and work". We (rather they) keep quiet when the last government was appointing the biggest thieves from everywhere.
I would suppose a sane human being would be interested in how corruption free the president's appointments are rather than where they come from. It's not like when someone from your tribe is appointed you personally feel the impact. What is the fuss about?
The truth is most people who bother about where an appointee comes from is more interesting in "chopping" than working. Their prayer is the person appointed from their region is someone they know so they can go and beg for contract.

It might look like that but i don't really care. You cannot solve problems with the same mentality that created the problems and ethnicity is what led us down this road we are.

Afam4eva:
This is not to cast any atom of doubt on Buhari's ability to lead and produce results after all, most of his opponents who were members of the electorate did not vote for him because they think he wont perform. Many of these people disliked him for the fact that they thought he was a tribalist and religious bigot. I personally paid no attention to what was flying around about Buhari pre-election, not necessarily because i thought what people were saying were lies but because those things could not be substantiated especially by me personally. So, i did what i have always done and that is to give people the benefit of the doubt. Personally, i felt Jonathan was a complete failure and thought we needed to try something different. Buhari may not have been my prefered choice out of the number of technocrats that i saw in APC but since he was presented, i kinda preferred him over Jonathan.
Now coming to the purpose of this thread. Doesn't it make some of us look stupid when it seems like Buhari is inching closer to the person they painted him to be. I mean, some Buhari supporters will make statements like "I don't care where the person Buhari appoints comes from as long as he is capable". Of course, statements such as these make people to sleep well at night and not look like complete idiots in the presence of people who would say "Didn't i warn you?". Anybody with an iota of common sense would see that this present dispensation has been riddled with an increase of Northern elements and it is glaring even to the blind. How do you explain the fact that after almost 20 appointments made so far. Only less than 5 are from the south. Not even a single person from the South-East has been appointed to any position. I know Igbos are the group of people we love to hate but this just isn't fair in my opinion. If you want to defend Buhari's pattern of appointments, i think your best bet would be to tell us how Southern Nigeria are so corrupt that it will be hard to find men of integrity or how the North boast of more educated individuals who are unrivaled.
In the spirit of giving Buhari, the benefit of the doubt, my 1 years grace period is still counting. After then, i'll have something to say about his government.
Actually some people (including me) say we don't care because we actually don't care. Successive governments have used Federal character in their appointments and where has that gotten us to?
The only people who would care about where Buhari's appointees come from are politicians and illiterates.

We gave Buhari a 4 year mandate, how he goes about it should not be our problem as long as it is within the confines of the constitution.

I'm so disgusted!
When news of appointments break out, the fist thing people will do is check the state of origin. Really? So track record is no longer important? Mr Fowler that was a Southerner was he not later shown to have fake certificates? The way I'm seeing it, people would prefer him to employ incompetent people from their regions rather than competent people from the North. Then when governance become business as usual, we start crying for our sorry selves. I really don't know when and how manage Nigeria moved from having two Muslim Presidential candidates without anyone batting an eyelash to all this religious and ethnic melodramas.

Honestly I'm beginning to get tired of the Nigerian dream. Maybe I should just relocate to the USA or something. Nigerians really get what they deserve. I'm just happy that Buhari doesn't seem moved by unnecessary outcries and may God grant him the strength to be able to remain resilient and focused on his mission.
Why do you think Nigeria is this way? A lot of the so called people on Nairaland are educated illiterates and they have no idea of how to move a country forward.

44 “They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’

45 “He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’

Also the fact that you cannot deposit forex into your bank account means that "one bank manager cannot send you to his mallam friend again."

Yeah it only in Nigeria that certain people aren't allowed to think because they are not ministers.

Now we know one of the reasons why Nigeria continuity.

Policy

.Politics: (1) The basic principles by which a government is guided.
(2) The declared objectives that a government or party seeks to achieve and preserve in the interest of national community

Wrong! Policies are drafted by policymakers and technocrats and must be in line with the agenda of the President and the programs of the party in power. The job of the civil servants is to implement these policies while the Minister in charge supervises. This is the reason people will always call for the head of the president/minister/party should anything goes wrong and not the career civil servants.
Nobody has a monopoly of ideas, anybody can draft a policy, the President/Minister ratifies and approves. Its myopic to believe on a certain class of people can draft a policy.

This is my problem with Buhari. Who will establish the National carrier? Is it the Civil servants? What steps has Buhari taken to see to the establishment of the carrier? What plans does he have? Why can't he appoint Aviation Minister to draft a plan?

Dear Nigerians, Buhari so called directive will yield no result if he continue to rely on civil servants to draft policies for him. There jobs as Civil Servants is implementation.
Policy can be drafted by anybody and not only politicians. That said, this is unwise. Aviation is a capital and technical intensive investment. He should leave that for now.
Its not compulsory we have a national carrier for now.

Now to way toward, strict monitoring of the forex market. People are putting undue pressure and it is causing us not just pain but bloodshed. We would have to make sure a lot of the transactions are done through appropriate means which means the bank and not the BDC guys.

We need to control the amount of dollars and other foreign currency we have. We need to give priority to the Naira and hopefully with the refineries coming on stream (thanks to the past administration for "fixing" and pressent for "securing pipelines against vandals"wink we will import less petroleum products and reduce the pressure.

But saying the CBN's policy is wrong is laughable. Yes it is extreme but it is needed
The funny thing is the Naira hasn't officially appreciated. All the policy did was pull the chair from under the speculators.
