damola311: Hi guys! I'm a follower of this thread and I will like to ask a question.
For someone who can't afford doing a German floor, is it advisable to cast just the foundation blocks all round with 4inches thickness or so and cover it with DPM Nylon?
The land is great, not waterlogged, a dry land.
Just want to make sure this is right and won't affect the main building? You can afford to do the german floor. It's not only granite that's an aggregate material for such purpose. There are other alternatives. Given that, you can do a plinth beam(chain the entire wall line with rods and cast it). |

anochuks08: Hello house, please what is the remedy to a house with humming german floor. The foundation was done during dry season, though after filling, it was watered and rammed but i guess that wasn't enough. After the rainy season, the foundation settled further, thereby leaving little space between the dpc and the earth filling which gives a humming noise when stepped on forcefully, Please what is the perfect way to fix this. There's absolutely nothing you can do as long as there's no actual cave in of the concrete floor. Except you choose to mark out the affected areas, break the concrete, refill with back filling material and cast again. |

Igbos can't be playing absolute opposition and just because there's an unwritten rotation of presidency they expect it to be handed down to them!! They are practically not in good terms with any geographical zone to wield the needed desired support to win any election. Just as they are not even in love with themselves to clench power. Do they even think Atiku has the weight to sway the North to vote in an Igbo president? The Igbos have made themselves politically irrelevant in the present day system and they have no one to blame but themselves. |

LibertyRep: There are two things involved about Muazu's defection. It's either; 1. He has been a mole all the while and was contracted to sabotage the party from within. A task that has been successfully achieved. 2. He was whipped into line by the EFCC as alleged. That's makes him a corrupt person seeking for protection and soft landing
Whatever, he won't be the first ex-chairman to defect from PDP to APC. Modu Sheriff and Audu Ogbe comes to mind. PDP should count her loses and restrategize You are only telling a good tale. A lot of persons stayed back in PDP when the going was tough and certain persons left for personal reasons to oust GEJ. I'll categorically tell you its getting to be pay back time. Expect more shocking stories and even a night Tom election day Nigerians will be overwhelmed by events. |

I thought he said Burahi does read, that Amaechi said so, but Amaechi could be heard saying the president reads and laughs at how people are blaming him for everything. The first release actually implies PMB reads, otherwise how can someone who does not read make a joke of something written in the newspaper? The other aspect of the speech was; PMB does not listen, which can be interpreted in any form. Not giving listening ear to Reno's statements could be one of those. |

What I have gathered from this audio release is that people no longer think with their brains once they dislike or have a chronic hatred for someone. One can only imagine the contents of the part 2 release? Reno is trying to get the reactions of Nigerians before releasing that and it will certainly be doctored to suit the occasion. It appears the PDP are not finding it easy sleeping. |

Daviddson: It can't be 2014, because Jonathan listens to people. In fact, his downfall was as a result of over listening to people and not having a mind to say "no", which recked his govt in the end. Buhari doesn't listen to people at all, just like Trump. If not, he'll have corrected the anomalous, skewed manner of appointments in the security by bringing in southerners. If not, he will have started to visit crisis states and displaying empathy, like a true leader does. Were you there? If GEJ listens to people the fall out between him, OBJ, Amaechi and a list of grassroot politicians would not have gone the way it is. Nobody asked Reno to leak the audio tape, so why is he telling Amaechi to own up to the audio speech? He should leak the entire thing but of course it's all about play act. |

Truthfully speaking, who can tell Nigerians what year since 1999 did NANs fight for the interest of Nigerian undergraduates? If higher institutions are on strike, what role can NANs play when ASUU is involved ? When higher institutions expel and rusticate undergraduates, how many times do you hear of NANs coming to the aid of those affected? Since 1999 till date is there a single year that Nigerian higher institutions don't go on strike, be it ASUU, SSANU, NASU, etc, etc.... Even when the now governor of rivers state in the former administration was minister for education, was universities and Polythecnics not on strike while the minister was shuttling on chartered flights? gabbytabby: Happy New Year to all the building enthusiasts on this thread. May 2019 see more learning experiences for us all.
I will be disturbing Una for some internal design ideas so I thank you in advance for your help and guidance.
In most decisions one makes in 9ja one has to factor into the cost, the present day 9ja factor.
For example if you are going to be moulding and supervising the moulding (mix ratio etc) of your blocks or you sufficiently trust your moulder then using 6 inches block for boungalow foundation might be less an issue than if you are buying blocks. If you have to then you do the needful. Why not just use four y16 rod and be done with a column than use six y12 for example.
If you remember that you can’t do over your foundation you might choose to do all foundation with 9 inches block. A typical present day 6 inches bought block is often times not of similar strength as one used in the 60s to 80s. Often times what we all do is provide advice. The owner or builder then gets to make his/her decision and then lives with consequences of that decision shikena. Regarding the bold from the latter part of the statement, one may not know the originators of such in Nigeria. But if a professional(individual) possess the right knowledge, technical and field experience and saddled with a client that strongly insists on such then it's up to the professional. There are limited articles online regarding the use of Y12 for single storeys but there are a whole lot of considerations. This is not a comparison to the above. Just like the drivers of lintel complete link chaining as against just covering the door and window openings and putting blocks on the remaining length of the wall. The traditional rule is the use of Y12 (4 bars with Y8 as stirrups). Other conventional methods are Y12 (3 bars), Y10(4 bars). I think I may have seen the use of Y8(4 bars) for lintel purposes but it was a foreign steel. Now, if any of the above is right ,one should be able to establish his/her stirrup spacing to use since all can't be the same given the loads. |

olaitoro: Not just in Imo and Edo state, in Anambra state especially Onitsha 60 - 70% of one storey buildings were done with Y12 iron and 6" solid blocks as against Y16 iron and 9" hollow blocks. Also some people use Y12 and 9" hollow block in their construction. And one can imagine that such structures are still standing. Guess probably they know what they are doing. |

KolaShangOne: ***Oga Brabus,
I think we should make it clear that this Individual has to be a professional. A structural Engineer that can calculate the loads acting on the building, and distribute this load appropriately.
A house built with 6" blocks will most likely have 150 x 150mm columns and beams. Can they easily substitute for 225 x 225mm columns and beams? Do they have a required safety factor? Etc etc..
****Also, the fact that you use a 9" or 6" block doesn't guarantee absence of defects ((this is majorly down to construction practices)) but there are reasons why we choose to use 9". All things being equal, a 9" block will have a higher load resistance than a 6" block. I'm talking Dead loads, Wind loads, Live loads, Vertical loads, compression and axial loads etc etc..
About the lintel..... Naturally and professionally one won't do a design for a single storey building with 6"blocks and Y12 to be used as columns/beams. If another is said to be a professional that individual should be able to calculate the number of Y12(columns/beams) that would stand as substitute for Y16 and also its corresponding stirrups spacing putting every other thing into consideration. |

Properties › Re: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by bixton(m): 10:11am On Jan 01, 2019 |
In construction work, there are substitute/alternative materials to use and when done right, it'll give the desired result. In as much as 6" blocks, Y12 are not the recommended to use for single storey buildings Engineering wise, that does not mean a structure done with such will not stand if the individual doing such knows what he's doing. The use of Y12 for single storey building as wholesome reinforcement material is not just peculiar to Edo State, you can add Imo State to that list and some other states. The use of 9" blocks for foundation wall of bungalows is a nice option but not a guarantee that the building will not have defects. There's also no known article anywhere that says complete lintel chaining prevents wall cracks. In certain riverine communities in Bayelsa State, those who have the resources have to transport granite materials across water via pontoon-barge to effect their building construction works. Others who can't, make use of periwinkle shells and 3/8" coarse as aggregate materials for concrete works for their single storey buildings. |

1) What is the selling price in my environment?
2) what kind of market do I have

Each area, I mean ur location is unique on its own.
Likewise the market u target is another thing u must understand, I have sold birds weighing as much as 3kg after slaughter and likewise less than 1kg.
Top of the questions, is how do u calculate ur cost? Ur cost must include the cost of raising the birds u lost during productions, and the cost incurred until d last bird leaves ur pen. Ever since Shehu Sani left the APC he has been more confused. Since the creation of Nigeria and killings in the North to Middle belt occurring there has being no traditional ruler, elder states man that have outright spoken against it. The only time you hear them speak is when there is a retaliation of killings and the others tend to make political statements just to be relevant. Trying to say anyone who speaks ill of it will enter the bad books of PMB is nothing but dumb. It happened during OBJ and GEJ.
