There is a saying that people get the leaders they deserve. When it comes to Nigerians that is 100% correct. The drop in oil price has been ongoing since late 2014. If you watch news channels like Bloomberg or CNBC it's been clear for months that the price was going to crash further early this year(China slower growth, End of Iran sanctions, Saudi battle against US Shale producers)This is a very important and critical event for Nigeria, yet it was never mentioned during the election. All we were hearing was 'Sai this' and 'Change That', the really important issues never got discussed. The one place where we could have heard exactly what Buhari's plans for the economy were would have been the Presidential debate, but of course APC refused to attend, and many people hailed their decision. I wonder if those same people are hailing now? Who are Buhari's economic advisors? During the financial crises of 2008/2009,late Yar'dua (Of blessed memory) put together a team consisting of a few governors, the CBN governor and some others to fashion out a stratergy for dealing with the crises. It was based on their work that Nigeria got through that crises, without any financial crash. How many people did not get paid in 2009? How many people lost their jobs? How many people could not get FX?. Yar'dua did what a President should do, HE TOOK CHARGE OF THE SITUATION. He did not spend all day blaming past govts of Obasanjo and Abacha... instead he showed leadership, brought together the right talents and SORTED OUT THE ISSUE. That is what a leader does. Many of you hailed and supported a man, who had no plan for the economy, no plan to deal with an oil prices crash...rather in the 8 months he's been in govt he has exacerbated deep running ethnic and religious fault lines, bringing instability into the land, while at the same time he's has brought forward zero strategies to handle the economic mess the nation is in. Blaming GEJ can take you only so far. Buhari is the president now and he must take responsibility. Sorry but that' the deal. |
johns944:The explanation will stat like this.... "Well you know fen I zwas in govt in zee 70's we could have many many Korpees of zee budget. It was no big deal. Why are they making zuhc big noise over nothing. " |
dikeigbo2:Very true bro, let's just hope more people start to question these things. It's a shame that our so called media seem blind to these kind of things. |
Just taking a quick break from My Beans and Yam to ask a question In every state in the country provision of water is the responsibility of the state govt, so how come we have a ministry of water resources at the Federal level? What exactly do they do? Ok back to my lunch ![]() |
Chi!! These people must think we are all total idiots O! Was it not Tinubu and co who were going round wooing those PDP governors (Amachi and co) to come and join them? Was it not Tinubu and co who worked with the former PDP speaker of the house to attack GEJ and then accepted him into ACP? But now that Saraki and co have shown Tinubu pepper he suddenly does not like PDP defectors to ACP. Haha Karma is a real bitch!!!! |
ibisko04:Iam sorry but I don't agree at all with you. When you are invited to a meeting, your responsibility is to be there, ready at the stated time. People are all different. Some people would have fully prepared the day before and as such can arrive 5 mins before the scheduled start and just use the time to exchange pleasantries. Others may need to come upto half an hour before in order to be fully prepared. There is no hard and fast rule anywhere in the world that says you have to be arrive 10 mins(or 15 or 30 or whatever) before time, the only standard rule is that you are at your seat, ready for the meeting by the scheduled time. In this case the scheduled time was 10am it was completely wrong for the president to start the meeting before that time and those who were absent but arrived before 10am should never had been made to feel, like they were somehow irresponsible. That is very poor man management on the presidents part. |
I am sorry but there is nothing to celebrate here. The meeting was scheduled to start at 10am. Buhari arrived early, ok that's good, but he should not have asked for the National Anthem to be sung and for the meeting to commence before 10am. If that is indeed what happened, then his behavior was actually disrespectful to the others who arrived after him but still before 10am. |
hammerT:O boy what point are you trying to make? If the goods are contraband then they should be seized full stop. Until the laws of the land are applied to all regardless of tribe or religion we will not move forward. Well done to the Customs for this and I wish them more success in the future. BTW I am not a Buhari supporter, but when I see a good thing being done, I will surely defend and praise it. |
Well I wonder.... Do many of you now understand the difference between a WAEC Certificate and a NEPA bill? If you still don't know, just hang on a few more months it'll become clearer. ![]() |
grandstar:Spot on!! |
'Change begins with me' That's a good slogan, so let Buhari lead by example. Let 'change begin with him'. Here some suggestions. Obey the laws the of the land, when people are released by the courts on bail, respect it. When the Army massacres fellow citizens in cold blood, don't try to justify it. Look around you at your ministers and other appointees, can you honestly say, before the ALMIGHTY, that there indeed no corrupt ones among them? Do you finally acknowledge that your benefactor Sani Abacha was corrupt? (After all it's returned Abacha funds that you are trailing Dasuki for) Only when Buhari himself has imbibed the spirit of 'Change begins with me' will he have the moral standing to demand it of others. |
Built2last:I feel you. The truth is there is no high level economic strategy from this govt. They have have shown absolutely no initiatives on how to deal with loss of income from the drop in oil prices. Any 100 level economics students knows that if a countries FX earnings drop, it needs to devalue it's currency accordingly. Trying to fight this is just plain dumb. It has been tried in the past and only leads to the kind of scarcity, paralysis and eventually economic stagnation that we are seeing now. Also, what hard measures is the govt prepared to take to reduce the cost of governance? Is it no time to re-visit the Oronsye report which called for the scrapping and merging of many federal agencies? At the end of the day the simple reality is that Nigeria is in a very tough situation. Tough choices need to be taken to steady the ship. The govt needs to outline what it's economic strategy is and start to implement it. I must say if the figures we are seeing from the 2016 budget are anything to go by, then it seems the road ahead will be quite rough. |
An interesting write up. Very mature. As I recently stated in another post, Nigerians need to dissuade themselves of absolute thinking. Things are never absolute in life. If you study many of the people that are universally venerated toady(Churchill, Mandela, Martin Luther King...etc) you'll find some events/episodes that reflect negatively on them. It can't be otherwise for no man/woman is perfect only the ALMIGHTY is perfect. By the same token many of characters who are universally derided also have some positive traits. For example many people don't realize that Babangida had to overcome significant resistance from the Northern religious establishment in order to re-establish diplomatic relations with Isreal. Abacha for all his negativity stood up to the British when they banned Nigerian Airways by banning BA from Nigeria, and despite economic and political sanctions, was able to enthrone democracy in Siera Leonne. My point here is that we should try and control our emotions and look at things objectively for things are seldom black or white but mostly a shade of grey. I've never been a Buhari supporter, I've got my reasons for that stand, but I've defended him on NL and will continue to do so when people make unfair attacks on him. The man is trying to do his best in very difficult circumstances. However there are very legitimate issues that he and his govt must be held to account for. The recent budget shambles is a case in point. Some of the figures being branded about are plain scandalous and for a govt that was elected on the mantra of CHANGE, it's simply unacceptable. I want to believe it was due to the late appointment of minsters (especially the Minister of Budget and Planning and the Minister of Finance) and hopefully we will not see a repeat of this in future budgets. To the Buhari supporters out there, please try and learn not take every criticism of Buhari as some kind of attack. Did you parents who love you, not criticize you when you did wrong? If you want him to succeed and be re-elected in 2019 then you guys should actually be his loudest critics, when he goes wrong. Shouting 'Sai Baba' all over the place even when the president does something that is clearly wrong, is no way to help him. |
What you must understand is that a lot of Nigerians are not really deep thinkers, capable of serious analytic process. They are mostly emotional people who latch onto a very simplistic thought and hold onto that passionately. An example of such is 'GEJ bad and Corrupt, Buhari good and Honest'. A lot of people have taken up that as their dominant thought and will not entertain anything that seems to go against it. Now going to the Budget. Firstly I don't believe for one second that Buhari or even he's very close associates are involved in corruption, however what Buhari is guilty off is lopsided management. Let me explain. Buhari did not have his cabinet in place till late October/Early November, he made it quite clear that he has a lot of disdain for Ministers and prefers to work with civil servants. Well let me tell you the most corrupt people in Nigeria today are the civil servants. They know every trick in the book and every way to inflate expenditure. For Buhari to leave such people in charge of the Budget preparation process was a big mistake, almost on the level of having a corrupt bloke like IBB as his chief of army staff. Buhari needs to be A LOT MORE INVOLVED IN THE DAY TO DAY HAPPENINGS IN HIS GOVT. During the recent media chat he seemed completely surprised at the FX shortage situation. How can a president not know about such an important thing? It is this lack of attention to detail that has allowed the civil servants and their accomplices to manipulate the budget process in such a corrupt manner |
seunmsg:Bravado on the internet is sooo easy. Let's see how things pan out ![]() |
TonyeBarcanista:You are a very intelligent chap, so let's not beat about the bush or waste time with semantics. There is a global Shia V Sunni civil war going on. Iran leads the Shia, Saudi leads the Sunnis. Anywhere the Shia are being victimized you can expect Iran's voice to be heard, that is just a fact. Another simple fact is that Nigeria is in no way shape or form ready/able to confront Iran. If they want to sponsor mayhem in our country they can do so. One of their proxy armies, Hezbollah is the ONLY mid east force to fight Isreal to a standstill. I've got little time for empty boasting and chest beating. Nigeria could not handle rag tag Boko Haram(who by the way are still not defeated), they had to bribe the ND militants to cease fire. Is that the country that now wants to take on Iran? Sorry bro but in international affairs might is right and Iran has the might, Nigeria should do the needful to defuse the situation. |
TonyeBarcanista:Sorry but i disagree. If a senior Catholic Cardinal was arrested in a country, would you not expect The Vatican to issue a statement? Iran is the global leader of Shia Islam and as such they are have a keen interest when Shia are being persecuted anywhere in the world. |
Ecoterrorist:True talk brother. I beg add the co-ordinates of Chief of Army staff Director of DSS Liar Liar Mohammed and Midget El Rufai. Make Hezbollah start with those ones first. |
Ezemarcel:6 years of 'clueless', 'incompetent' GEJ nothing like this happend. The almighty wise one, whose name we are not worthy to mention has only been in govt for 8 months and we've got a crashed currency, rule of law consigned to the dustbin, and now we are at loggerheads with Iran! Iran of all countries, a country that even the US treads carefully with. Good one ACP, carry on, 2016 promises to be very interesting. |
I hope they are not Shia O!! In any case I thought bubus' s body armpit was supposed to fix all this?? |
Koolking:It is always interesting to see those who live in a free society advocate for dictatorship. I hope you are aware that in the 'Garden of Eden' that you think North Korea is, the people do not even know what the internet is let alone have access to it. Maybe you should go and live there for 6 months then let's see if your enthusiasm for that kind of govt still shines bright. |
JaredNomak:Did The Nation pay the corporate membership fee for the Wailing Wailers association? If so I hope they did not use any Dasuki money O!. In any case they are very welcome. We are still waiting for Leadership and Daily Trust to come on board! ![]() |
I agree 100%. Buhari is an honest man who means we'll, but he lacks the intellectual abilities to handle a large complex country like Nigeria. |
Buhari Don put VP for big work! |
What does kidnapping and IED have to do with devaluation? |
I beg can someone order 'Economics for Dummies' for our president. |
Ngozi dey talk again O! |
IVORY2009:Yea the parts under president Michelle |
Haba Buhari Deutschemark no dey again na Euro Germany dey use for many years now!!!!!! |
The Army kills civilians and Buhari is waiting for Kaduna state govt to investigate. Na wa O |
