We don't need Bloomberg or any other foreign media source to tell us what we can see with our own eyes. Buhari has no plan or strategy for the economy. He simply does not understand how the MODERN global financial system works, his mindset is set in the 70's where govt ran everything. He has not appointed a heavy weight as finance minister, so expect him to continue to make all the decisions regarding the economy. I am sorry to say Nigerians are in for a very rough time. |
As a South south citizen I am filled with shame today. 2 South south states Delta and Cross River are paying for a propaganda article in the FT supporting the Buhari administration, while a Yoruba, yes Yoruba PDP governor is the only one taking the fight to the ACP. I don't know what kind of governor Fayose is, I'll leave that to Ekit citizens to confirm, but what I can say without any reservation is that he is today the most courageous and steadfast politician in the country. All the other PDP governors have suddenly lost their tongues for fear of offending Buhari, but in the best tradditons of opposition Fayose continues to go on the attack. A world of advice to Buhari's supporters. Do not just brush away every criticism of your hero. This is exactly what GEJ's supporters were doing. It is only via criticism that leaders can now where they are going wrong and make amends. It's quite clear that that the 'Buhari bubble' has burst. He needs to get his head down and start to roll out policies that will impact the common man on the street. In all honesty how can you defend a president who also doubles as the oil minister, leaving the country for so long (Adding the Iran trip and the current trip it'll be almost 2 weeks outside the country) when it's in the midst of a serve fuel shortage, with all the economic impacts that causes? We should learn to tell the truth to ourselves first and then to our leaders at all times. Buhari has a golden chance to put Nigeria on the right track finally, but he's really messing up so far. it's left to we the citizens to point this out to him. Do remember how GEJ now bemoans the fact that he received a lot of bad advice while in office. How do you know the same is not being done to PMB. Maybe he does not even realize the full extent of the fuel scarcity because his advisers might be saying 'Oga it's not too bad, just a few stations here and there'. This is why it's critical that we as citizens say the TRUTH all the time , regardless of who we support. If the situation is bad it needs to be shouted from the roof tops ,so that president is left in no doubt. |
modath:You have started to scratch the surface of the REAL problem of Nigeria, until this problem is addressed Nigeria will NEVER move forward. This problem is the issue of the structure of the country. We continue to operate the myth that we are one people and there is one Nigeria. This is total nonsense. You can chant 'One Nigeria' from here till the cows come home, that does not make it so. You refer to America, the last time I looked there is not an 'Emir of Texas' or an 'Oba of Iowa' or 'Queen of New York'. If we are even to begin to operate as one people then the institutions and structures which currently promote division need to go. Yes that means ALL the traditional institutions gone(Every single Emir, Oba, Sultan....etc) Every reference to 'Federal Character' and every policy based on it gone. Now can you see that happening anytime soon? Of course not. So we continue with this facade of 'One Nigeria' where ethnic champions continue to pursue narrow ethnic agendas and nobody really cares about the Nation as a whole. It does not matter who is President, if you like clone a mixture of Buhari, Idagbon, Mandela and Obama to come and rule Nigeria, they will end up failing like all the presidents/Head of state before them, because the basic structure of the country negates positive development |
APC only have themselves to blame for all the attacks they are now getting. All through the campaign they never prepared Nigerians for touch times ahead. Rather they just created the quite false illusion that all that was needed to was to put Buhari in govt and just like magic everything would become good. When you raise the peoples expectations to such high levels, don't be surprised if they attack when those expectations are not satisfied. |
I guess being a governor is a lot more demanding than being an armchair critic on twitter. |
A few points: First the minimum wage is a legal requirement. It's not for the Governors to say they can't pay it. They have to. Second. The governors need to start to reduce their costs just as the FG is doing. They need to reduce ministries and reduce the size of their payrolls to a more affordable level. Third. Every state govt must explain EXACTLY what it uses security votes for. Considering the fact that security is provided by the FG, I've never understood the need for this particular budget item |
donholy28:What? Waste money feeding them in Jail? For what? What good will they ever be to society? The vermin should be put to death ASAP. We are too many degenerate, sick people in society today. |
OnReflection:As I said in a previous post, the 'hullabaloo' as you refer to it has been caused by only one person and that's the defense minister. Nobody else was talking about this matter anymore. Let's please focus on just that. The defense minister is claiming the previous army leadership acted wrongfully when they said they had no copy of Buhari's certificate. So it's now for him to show they were lying by either going into the army records and bringing out said certificate or launching an investigation to find out who if anyone conspired to destroy it. To do neither of these things and yet come out and accuse senior office of such a act is quite irresponsible in my opinion |
OnReflection:Firstly I would like to thank you for a detailed response, I truly admire intellectual well thought out responses over and above the usual juvenile rantings that are all to common these days on NL. The central plank of your argument is that the Army high command under GEJ, destroyed Buhari's certificate. I find it quite hard to believe that this would happen without somebody leaking it out. Moreso now that Buhari is President would you not expect him to open an investigation into such a serious matter? Do recall the only reason we are still talking about this issue, is because the new defense minister has basically attacked the former COAS(his senior by the way) over the certificate issue. So if the minister is so sure that Buhari indeed had a certificate and the former COAS conspired to destroy it, let him conduct an investigation, present proof that this is indeed what happened and then take any appropriate next steps. To come and tarnish the name of the former COAS, without either providing the said certificate or any proof whatsoever that the former COAS was responsible for it's destruction, is the worst kind of slander possible. BTW Politicization of the armed forces did not start with GEJ. I am sure you recall how former president Yar'dua was flown back to Nigeria in the dead of Night, the whole operation conducted by the then COAS, without the acting President Jonathan being informed. Sometimes people seem to think that everything bad and negative with Nigeria started the day GEJ assumed office. |
OnReflection:I am sorry but you have made no real point. All you've done is state that the requirement for the officer corp is a school leaving certificate. We all know that, the question here is simple, WHY CAN NOBODY PRODUCE A COPY OF BUHARI's CERTIFICATE? Please understand in Nigeria anything goes, we've seen people graduate who never attended classes, people get jobs who never attend assessment interviews, so coming here to say because the criteria for officer coprs, automatically means that every officer in the Nigerian army indeed has said certificate, is quite an ignorant statement to make. This issue can only be put to bed for good, by the production the certificate either from the Army or from the exam board. |
How could an ex army man like Buhari not realize the issue this appointment would cause? With all the security issues facing the country we need a seamless chain of command not one riven with intrigues and potential bad blood. |
Once again we see a clear example of how things work in the zoo called Nigeria compared to developed countries. In the developed world(USA for example, after all we claim to be using their system) portfolios are assigned to the minister designates BEFORE screening. That way the Senators can ask the appropriate questions. In fact in the US it's the related Senate committee that does the first screening, so for example in this case, it would first be the Senate finance committee that would do detailed screening of the candidate, they then have to vote and only if a majority approve, is the candidate then presented to the full Senate for a final vote. Now if we had followed a similar track, the Senate finance committee could have grilled the lady in depth about her experience, stewardship of Ogun states finances and plans for the Nigerian economy. As it is we don't have a clue what here abilities are or are not. We can only pray that she's up to the job, because Nigeria faces, some very tough times ahead, with the sustained drop in the price of crude. |
She should focus on her campaign for the Chibook girls. ![]() |
If Buhari does not contest then I bet it'll be El Rufai in 2019 |
Why is this in the Politics section? |
Baba going to make sure his boys and girls get the best ministerial portfolios tomorrow |
Rextayne:The 'clueless' man was President of this country when it became the largest economy in Africa. The 'clueless' man is now an international icon for democracy, peace and stability. Maybe being 'clueless' is not so bad! ![]() |
j1mmy:Not just pray, also give 10% of your wages and your entire first month salary. Nigerians, happy people, crazy people!! As for Buhari, I would love to say 'I told you so' but not just yet. You guys have not seen anything yet. The man is a complete and total dictator and yet does not really know how to achieve anything. Why do you think when IBB struck not a SINGLE senior officer tried to defend Buhari? All the service chiefs, all the GOC's all the battalion commanders, all were in support of IBB. Does that not tell you that they had all seen that Buhari had no clue what he was doing? |
While the haters are busy hatting, you are making ever larger strides on the international stage. Those who insulted you and called you clueless have not been able to end Boko Haram nor release the Chibok girls. The Niara has crashed under them and industries are closing down across the land, yet they continue to insult you. You on the other hand are going from strength to strength. Well done Sir. You are a rare breed. A gentleman with a good heart. May your good deeds continue to be acknowledged and rewarded. |
RockMaxi:My brother all the money used to educate you was not in vain!! I really laugh at us in the south the way we fight ourselves. We attack Ibori, Alams, Amachi, Fashola, Tinubu etc yes these guys have done corrupt things, but do you EVER see the northerners attacking their own the way we do? Are any of the southern governors/Politicians richer than T Y Danjuma?. The way Buhari always talks, you would think all Nigeria's problems starred on May 29th 1999. He conveniently forgets everything that happened under is brother Northern rulers, like Abacha, Babangida and Abusalem. This is why some of us were saying that as bad as GEJ was we would rather have an incompetent, corrupt southerner as President than any Northerner, but of course the Twitter and Facebook generation of ignorant youths thought they knew better. Slowly their eyes will be opened to the realities of Northern domination |
seunmsg:I really don't see how he's hating. Oby has been jobless for a long time compared to Ngozi for example, who got has 3 international positions since leaving office. Oby is just a noise maker. First it was 'Bring back our girls', well the last time I checked the girls have not yet been brought back, so how come she's gone quiet on that front, and is now making noise about the Economy? |
Well well, where do I start? Let's start with a question. Can you imagine the leader of any major nation like The US, UK, India, Russia...etc, going to a foriegn country and there announcing that his country is broke and will not be able to even pay all the ministers as stipulated by the constituion? How on earth is that supposed to inspire confidence in the country? The constiution is quite clear, MINISTERS should be appointed from every state of the country. With this new approach Buhari can populate the FEC with people from every state, but when it comes to the substantive ministers, he'll apply his usual biased approach and once again it'll be dominated by Northerners. |
OP, You really need to do some self analysis. Why would you insult a whole group of people simply because you disagree with the actions of one man? Floyd does not sell drugs, he does not rob from anybody. He's money is the result of over 20 years of hard work in the most brutal sport of all. If he chooses to wipe his backside with $100 bills that's HIS PREROGATIVE. He has earned the right to do anything he wants with his money. By the same token if you ever OP, ever make a fortune in life, you have the right to spend how you see fit. What either you or Floyd do is in no way a reflection on your various racial/ethnic groups. |
Read between the lines, Tinubu is starting to attack Buhari little by little. This reality TV show called APC is ab about to get very interesting |
They are going round shouting 'Sai baba' while Buhari is appointing Audu Ogbeh as minister. A man who was first appointed a minster in 1979 when many of them were not even born. Nigerian youths are a big joke!! |
texazzpete:So in effect the Army can't totally defeat Boko Haram. Yes they can do all the things you've said, but to really degrade and eventually destroy a terror group, you need a joined up strategic program of robust intelligence operations, economic regeneration and of course like you say hearts and minds. I find it extraordinary that after all these years, we are yet to persecute ANYONE for being a financier of BH. How did the group go from Bow and Arrows, to surface to surface missiles? As long as the political establishment continues to keep it's head in the sand, and fails to cofront head on THE REAL SPONSORS OF BH,then this madness will not end, regardless of the brave efforts of the armed forces |
OrlandoOwoh:Please learn to write correct English before you ever reply to one of my posts ![]() |
OP, You'll be insulted and abused for simply telling the truth. The people I feel sorry for are the ignorant youths. They go about shouting 'Sai baba' all over the place meanwhile the exact same people that have been robbing the nation blind have now been nominated ministers. Let's wait and see how this group of recycled crooks will implement a 'change' agenda |
This is so so true, however it's not just in Nigeria, it's global. In the UK there are graduates here who can hardly put together a correct sentenence. It seems people are just getting dumber all around and I blame the internet to a large degree. When we were growing up and there as no internet, we enriched our minds by reading books. We would read anything we could lay our hands on, but now kids can spend a whole day on Facebook and other social media sites, doing nothing of value |
whirlwind7:My brother, I and so many others feel the same way. Indeed home is best, but my main issue is that there are just too many BASIC things that don't work in Nigeria. It's really sad, I love my country dearly and really don't want my kids to grow up without knowing their country and it's cultures and traditions, but in all honesty, I would have to be making significant money, to be able to give them a similar lifestyle in terms of education, healthcare...etc in Nigeria compared to what they have abroad |
jayriginal:What he's saying is that the Nigerian System makes people corrupt, even if they are good by Nature. My brother if you've never been in a govt position you will not know how hard it is. The corruption is all pervasive and all around you. There was story recently of a solider who was deployed to the Niger Detla, when they where out on patrol and encountered some oil smugglers, he witnessed his superior officer collect bribe from the smugglers. The officer proceeded to divide out the bribe among the men, and this soilder did not want to take his share. He was told in very clear terms that if he does not join in, then it means he can't be trusted.... you know what that means. In a country where the system works, that solider would have the confidence to go and report the matter to the Military police, but of course we all know he can't do that in Nigeria. So eventually the solider accept his share of the bribe. That is a clear example of a good person, being corrupted by the system. It is a very sad fact. |
