alcmene:Bless you bross. It's amazing how ignorant many Nigerians are. Do you really think if it was Tompolo or other Genuine ND Militants that did the last round of bombing, they would deny it? Did they ever deny any single bombing when they were fighting Obasnajo? Nigerians please understand there are 2 groups in Nigeria you absolutly do not mess with, the Niger Delta and the Middle belt. These people have fighting in their blood just the Afghans. Ask IBB how they almost butchered in the Okar coup and sent him running like a wounded dog to Abuja. We all want peace, the country can't develop without peace, however all nations have their rellities and one of Nigeria's realities at the moment is that the you need certain 'MEN' in the Niger Delta to secure the peace so that our oil operations can proceed effectively. In the current economic climate this is absolutely essential. There is nothing to be gained, and quite a lot to be lost if another war should break out in the Niger Delta. Buhari should tread softly. |
Regardless of weather she's qualified or not, what really angers me is that we always seem to wait for foreign media outlets like the FT, Economist ...etc to give judgement on our policies and personnel. Is the Nigerian media asleep? |
Silvofitz:The above post is a clear case of a person who was deprived essential vitamins when growing up, such deficiency affects normal brain functions. Please make sure you feed your kids a well balanced diet of meat, fish and vegetables. |
So who do we blame for this one? GEJ? Ngozi? Dezini? IBB? Basketmouth? ![]() |
ajebuter:What so many people miss is that while GEJ govts was of course corrupt (BTW EVERY SINGLE GOVT IN OUR HISTORY HAS BEEN CORRUPT) he did manage to have some very good people in key positions. Ngozi, Dr. Akinwumi Adesina and Ms. Arunma Oteh have gone on to get top international appointments. These people among others quietly worked in the background to help keep things stable while the corruption was going on. Zombies have been insulting Ngozi, yet she kept the economy stable during the steepest part of the oil price crash. The current Finance minister seems to be completely clueless. For goodness sake the woman was talking about how she was going to go to the bond market to borrow money to finance the budget of yams!! How bad do things have to get before Buhari understands we are in an economic emergency ![]() |
ipledge10:Wrong wrong wrong. Between 2014 and May 2015 Oil had infact dropped from over $120 to about $40, yet the value of the Niara during that time remained relatively stable. GEJ had a top class economic team in place and they were quietly able to weather the storm without the Niara taking a hit. The big drop in the currency has all taken place in the last few months. So please answer me this, how come when oil fell from $130 to £50 the Niara did not crash, yet now it's fallen from $50 to $30 we have a crash?? You can fool some of the people some of the time, but you can't fool all the people all of the time, one day Nigerians will come to realize that Ngozi and her team were THE BEST ECONOMIC MANAGERS Nigeria has ever had bare none. |
I just sooo love this President. It seems evey time he opens his mouth , he manages to say something even more stupid than the last time. At this rate the guy will soon put Basketmouth out of business. The Niara was fairly stable throughout GEJ's 6 years in office, even when the oil price started to decline in 2014 This Cattle farmer has been in office for 9 months and the Niara has fallen by over 40% against the dollar and the man has mouth to talk about GEJ and Niara value ![]() |
I hope he makes a full recovery. It'll be quite a shame if the last thing he did on this earth, was to try and defend the indefensible. |
Was this not the same President who said ministers was just noise makers and Civil Servants could run everything. I think he owes Nigerians an apology |
Obiagelli:Exactly, they are nothing more than vessels to siphon funds. The size of govt needs to be drastically reduced |
Congratulations to the OP!! I've seen quite a few similar cases. I've got a friend who did not even finish Uni in Nigeria, and today is a high earning software engineer in Europe. The truth is the Nigerian economy is quite small, so employers can afford to be extra choosy. I hope one day our economy expands to the point where third class/pass graduates can also find jobs were their talents are utilized. |
harmless011:The money spent by your parents to educate you was very well spent. Well done for a very on point post. I simply can't understand the mindset of some Nigerians. How bad do things need to get before they will accept that Buhari is getting things VERY wrong. According to them all of the below are not Buhari's fault. Over 5 months to appoint ministers. Not Buhari's fault. Refusal to obey court judgements. Not Buharis fault Not one presidential visit to victims of BH since this govt came to power. Not Buhari's fault Attempted MASSIVE corruption in the 2016 Budget. Not Buhari's fault. After 8 months no policy framework for the economic downturn. Not Buhari's fault. So please tell us, what exactly is Buhari's responsibility as President?? And please it's time to drop the tired argument of 'Was GEJ any better...blah blah' GEJ LOST THE ELECTION. BUHARI IS THE PRESIDENT NOW AND THE BUCK STOPS WITH HIM. THAT'S HOW THE SYSTEM WORKS. |
hmm, do you mean the PDP of James Ibori, Alams(RIP), Mr Fixit and Mama Peace?? If so I beg bring back Army govt. I lived under IBB and I can tell with oil at an average of $20 per barrel Nigeria was WAY better than it was under PDP!! |
Chi now we know why Buhari has been contesting for President for 12 years. it was simply to rack up air miles seeing the world!! |
IBB I beg arrange for your boys to do the needful, it's been a long time since we heard those words 'Fellow Nigerians...' |
In answer to the OP question, well nobody really knows. What is certain is that the same economic pressures brought about by the low oil prices would have been felt by GEJ. However one thing we have to also consider is that this would have been GEJ's last term, without the pressure of another election he would have been able to fully focus on the economy, perhaps bring in more technocrats into his cabinet like OBJ did in his second term. Either way whoever one the election the current economic slowdown was inevitable. |
Simple, by becoming a country where the RULE OF LAW applies to all irrespective of status. No society can progress without the rule of law. Lawless societies are really no different from the jungle where the only law is survival of the fittest (Richest in our case). |
fulanimafia:Please let's have some straight talk here. We all know there are corrupt Nigerians every where, but the critical fact that you and many others seem to be overlooking is that the President of Nigeria is supposed to be putting Nigeria and Nigerians in the best possible light. He is the number one salesman of Nigeria. Just imagine if there are Nigerians going for job interviews now and the recruiters were already doubting weather to take them on bassed on the bad reputation some Nigerians have, well now they can just 'hey even their President says they are corrupt, why should we take a risk on hiring him/her'. Don't you see, it was the absence of nuance in the statement that is so annoying. What I expect my president to say is something like: 'A lot of you Nigerians in the Uk are doing extremely well in a broad range of industries from fiance to technology to medicine.Unfortunately a small number of criminals continue to give all of you a bad reputation. My govt will intensify efforts to ensure that all those who carry out corrupt practices and then run back home are persecuted and their assets seized. I want to ask the overwhelming majority of law abiding Nigerians to continue to work hard and do your community and country proud.' A PRESIDENT DOES NOT COME ABROAD AND PAINT HIS CITIZENS AS CRIMINALS. IT'S SIMPLY NOT DONE!!!! |
How sad that some people hate themselves to such a degree that they would advocate being slaves to others. What a shame. We have lots of problems in Africa, many self inflicted, but we are also making slow progress. Things will not change overnight, most likely not in my lifetime, but I intend to do my bit as best I can, and lay the foundations so my kids can continue and hopefully either they or their kids will live in the Africa of our dreams. It will take time, attituteds need to change, new fearless and patriotic leaders who have the peoples good at heart need to rise up in large numbers. This WILL happen. If you check the history of modern African since the 60's you can already see progress. There was a time in the 70's and 80's when practically every African nation was ruled by a 'Strong Man' either Army or One Party state. Today those are the exception. We take for granted things like a mostly free press across Africa, forgetting that it was a few decades ago that Idi Amin was killing people for daring to write a bad word about him. Constant steady progress. It's slow but we CAN NEVER loose faith in ourselves or our destiny. If we do then what's left? The OP is obviously educated. You got that education because of FREEDOM. Do you really think you would have the ability to come and write such an article if you were a slave. No. You would be uneducated working on some farm or mine or building site from morning to night. No rights to anything not even to your own wife. Are you really telling me you would prefer that to what Nigeria or any other African nation has to offer ![]() The recent CNN freedom project exposed the activities of modern day salary and the terrible lives slaves across the world live in. From the sex industry to fast food. Maybe the OP should go and voluntarily become a slave and let's see if after 5 years he'll still feel the way he does. It's very easy to declare love for slavery and servitude when you are a free man. It's also the height of hypocrisy |
Where is the President spending his vacation? This all sounds like the man is not well. In any case I hope he gets some rest. This is going to be a tough year to be President. |
aluk:Maybe it's because the Supreme Court justices are braver. They have nothing to fear, they are not looking for any promotion. The Justices in the lower courts maybe want to appear to be on the right side of govt so that their carriers may benefit. Either way Oyegun's statement was the height of stupidity. In a more advanced country he would have been forced to retire by now |
Nobody should be surprised by this. What Oyegun said is simply the truth. Everyone in ACP knows how much Amechi contributed to Buhari's election. The APC need funds from the oil states to finance their affairs. I hope people can now see that Buhari's so called anti corruption war is nothing but a big fat LIE. It's only aim is to attack political opponents and settle old scores. When I see the EFCC investigate and charge Amechi or Tinubu I'll be the first to accept that I am wrong, till that day, let's continue to watch the charade called anti-corruption war unfold, and the inevitable blow back it will generate. |
dtruth3:Lol!! I can scan a form for madam and it to her via email. |
anjigirl:Dude the Niara has already been devalued on the black market. That's the reality. Buhari can continue with his 70's style economics but he can never ever defy market forces. |
Even if you hate Ben Bruce, is there anything he has said here that it not true? To the Youth, you are the future of this Nation, any money borrewed today is being secured against YOUR future. It is You who will be ones paying it back, so you should take a keen and close interest into how your future is being mortgaged. |
Adminisher:By that same token Lagos does not belong to anybody but to all Nigerians, since as the former Federal capital it was developed with the resources(human and capital) of ALL Nigerians. |
(Un)Happy New Month! Any word from the finance minister? Any word from Buhari's special economic advisor?(Does he even have one?) I hate to say it, but things are going to get a LOT worse. You can't apply 1970's solutions to 2016 problems. |
If this is true, then this man should not only be tried for corruption, but also for high treason. If found guilty on the treason charged he should be executed by firing squad. |
OlujobaSamuel:Well Mr Obasanjo, when I read the quote above, I must wonder, how does your 50 Million bribe to each of the National Assembly members for your third term plot fit with the pious quotes? Obasanjo is the MOST hypocritical and two faced person in the Nigerian public space today. He writes his letters to various govts, pretending to be all moral and upstanding, meanwhile his actual practices never match up with his words. I pray one day this two faced hypocrite will be exposed for the immoral creature he really is. |
Congratulations to FFK for this write up. It has long been a major bone of contention for me that we Nigerians don't seem to know our history. We are so caught up 'in the moment', that we rarely take time to ponder where we are coming from, what has happened before, and how that impacts what will happen in the future. When we consider the first coup, the counter coup, the genocide in the North and the civil war, one thing comes out very clearly to me, that is violence only begets more violence and nobody has a monopoly of violence. Please to all those who shout 'War' from whichever part of the country you are, study the early history of Nigeria to see how violence can lead to even greater and unimagined levels of worse violence. Let us look for peaceful ways to resolve our grievances (justified as some of those grievances maybe) Ghandhi won Indian independence from the British Empire without firing a shot, Dr King inspired by Ghandhi took the same approach for the battle for Black civil rights in the US. So whatever your cause, be it Biafra, Niger Delta, Shia.... try and embrace peaceful agitation. Too much blood has been split in the short life of this Nation |
Aufbauh:Based on what facts? Has the govt of UAE released any documents to Senator Sani to buttress is claims? We should please learn to deal with FACTS and not conjuncture and rumor. Buhari has signed an agreement with UAE, so iet them now release all documents that show what ALL Nigerian politicians own in Dubai. Somehow It'll be very interesting to see if Atiku and Tinubu's names appear on any such list. Somehow I doubt it. |
