PoliticsRe: FG Mulls Single Salary Scale For Federal Civil Service MDAs by COMPAQ(m): 7:37am On Jul 31, 2023
FreeStuffsNG:
it should be both Time and performance based. It is easy to suggest when you are outside the system but when you enter, you will understand.

Civil service has a completely different system of appraisal. What you call performance can be you just being posted to an interior village to help collate data and gather intels , likely incognito, for the next 5 years, you may not get info for the next 2 years yet you must remain incognito or in a posting less than your qualifications. Nobody will ever accept that kind of thing in private.

Civil service is a non-personal system unlike private, time is also an asset as you build institutional memory, data and learning curve in a secured-employment well motivated team. Their form of appraisal is completely different from private where profit is the bottomline. It is different o.
Ok, i agree with you to some extent. But never the less, the reward system in the civil service needs to change. There needs to be a sense of needing to actually deliver measurable results and outcomes that impact on the citizenry. How can public services across all ministries not be working and yet civil servants are getting promoted.

How can passport booklets not be available for months, yet immigration folks feel they deserve to be promoted?

How can drivers license take forever to process, no cards available, cameras are bad, you cant snap, yet the FRSC guys feel they deserve promotion on time basis. Makes no sense to me.

How can roads in Nigeria be in atrocious state, yet somebody in FERMA whose job description is supposed to be Supervisor for maintenance thinks he deserves promotion to Director because he's been supervisor for 10years.

Nigeria needs a reset in almost all areas, including the reward system and employee value proposition in the public sector.

Promotion in civil service needs to be performance based, not time based!!

The statement " I am due for promotion" I hear in the civil service always makes me laugh.

Come and try telling your bosses that in the private sector where you are not meeting targets, not creating new ways of working, have poor work attitude etc and see what you get.

Civil servants need to work for their promotion. They are ll hardly working in my view. Just pushing paper up and down for oga to sign. No value adding work.

this house below in Nigeria will go for nothing less than 20 million in Nigeria and only available in the super rich evirons like banana island, GRA, lekki, and the likes... na only the ignorant and uneducated you guys can decieve
Guy calm down. Why this fixation on washing machine, fridge, microwave, wifi, gas burner etc. Almost any house in a serviced estate in Lagos comes with that. My personal house in Agungi in an estate came with all that. And rent there is currently N4mln. The only difference is that the one in your picture has space and garden which you don't get in Lagos because land is a premium, unlike Houston. Go to places where land is a premium like NY, Boston, San Fransisco etc and a house with that much space is much less attainable..

When you get to a system and country that works...reduce yourself and gain in demand skills and certifications and earn good.

If that's true, then you are an outlier in America and not average at all. Probably in the top 10%. If $4k is your bills and you say you have way more than that in extra income, so if i assume your net pay is $8k, then that means your gross is like $12k per month after deducting taxes, medical insurance, Social security taxes etc. $12k gross is like $150k per annum. Not unattainable, but also not average. if a doctor or working with Amazon, Google etc in the tech space then I can understand. But truth be told, a lot of Americans don't earn near that amount. You are equating yourself with some one working in Shell,Chevron in Nigeria. How many Nigerias earn that type of income in Nigeria? So your situation is probably not representative

FYI Ghana does have crude oil. Ghana does 180 thousand barrels a day. Nigeria does about 1.4million barrels a day. So we do about 8times as much as them. And we are about 7times their population. So comparatively we are on the same level.

Funny enough, despite all the plenty talk about the minimum wage, I still wonder who exactly makes N30k per month. No doubt there are, but my point is that many people also make far more than that per month - people you might not expect make that much.

I very much doubt that a danfo driver in Lagos, bolt or Uber driver is not making more than N30k a month.
Most private drivers in lagos are making more than N30k a month. As at 2019, I was paying my driver N40k a month and if i still had him now, i'd be paying him at least N60k, if not more.
I doubt any mechanic with customers is not making more than N30 a month
I doubt any spare parts dealer in idumota, electronics seller in ASPAMDA etc is not making more than N30k a month.

Maybe I'm skewed by being in Lagos sha. I guess the real issue is in towns like Ijebu, Shagamu, Ago Iwoyi, Oshogbo, etc where there isn't a lot of activity like Lagos.

minimum wage in the USA is $15 per hour, they work 12 hours daily, 7 to 6. 15x12 equal $180. 180x5 working days equal $900 weekly. $900 x 4 weeks in a month equal $3,600. House renth in the USA range in $1000 or $1500 monthly depending on the state. Now minus $1500 from $3,600 equal $2,100 to spare. At the rate of 800 naira per dollar 2,100 equal 1.6 million Nigerian naira. This is for the minimum of minimum wages in the USA.
I've always said the problem in Nigeria is not the cost of electricity, petrol, housing etc. The main problem is the wage level that's senselessly low and that is what should be the debate by NLC and civil society. All this trying to suspend electricity review that NASS is trying to do is just nonsense. There are more intelligent ways to help the poor that doesn't keep the price below the cost price. keeping prices of these thing below their cost just breeds inefficiency and corruption as we have seen in electricity and petrol.

Left to me, minimum wage should be around N120k per month. Unfortunately not everyone in the economy will benefit from that. And to some extent i blame those people for refusing to go to school. Too many people are poor because they refused to go to school when they had opportunity to and many just went to mark time.

An intelligent well educated carpenter will do far better than a local carpenter that's still using his leg to hold wood while sawing manually. How straight can that be. Whereas an educated carpenter knows that the best way to enhance his productivity is to get electric tools that make work easier and significantly enhance the quality. Just check out carpenters and tilers on YouTube from the abroad and see the sense, skill and level of technology used. The local carpenter may never rise beyond a certain level, while the educated carpenter will be doing furniture for big boys in Lekki and making good money.

Are you saying that house rent in Nigeria is cheap? Please stop that nonsense.

30K minimum wage whereas 3 bedroom flat on average is 1 million naira per annum.

The impact of housing is majorly felt in the big cities with a lot of out of state residents. Other wise most people across Nigeria live in their own or family houses.

Roughly all taxes and bills are like half of your income. You still have a very good half to save flex and invest.

You people should stop being wicked.

Why is there subsidy for import in the first place...because we have no working refineries.

The amount spent on subsidies per month is more than enough to build refineries.

You can lie to yourself and the people but the truth is already catching up with you and you and your masters will have no place to hid when the country grinds to a full halt soon.

That time there will be no where to run to as the people will start looking for politicians to physically deal with.

Make una continue.
Yes rent in Nigeria is actually cheap, especially outside Lagos, Abuja and maybe PH. My parents standard 3 bedroom bungalow in Ibadan is going for N700k in Ashi-Bodija area. To find people sef na war. Ibadan has no middle class. Only UI lecturers, UCH doctors/nurses and civil servants in that town.

If I uprooted that house to Gbadaga in Lagos, it'd be like N2.5mln

But even a N5mln per annum duplex in Lekki is just $6,250 equivalent.

My 4 bedroom duplex in Houston goes for $2,500 PER MONTH. That's equivalent of N24mln per annum.

If diesel has been fully deregulated and at current crude prices and exchange rate is currently N640, why would petrol be N700. In most places I've been to abroad, diesel is about 10% - 15%
higher than petrol
