This reminded me of last December 2020, my best friend's dad buys day old chicks every January and rears them till December, only for consumption during festive periods and for gifting people. He called me few days to Christmas to come and collect one chicken. I went there very early on Christmas day to get it. It was an all white local chicken,the biggest I ever saw in my life, looking old (almost a year old) and gentle. The legs were now bent, couldn't stand properly anymore.
We didn't kill it for Christmas because we had frozen ones in the fridge. so we decided to wait till new year. We kept it in a big bath, because it can't run around anymore, it was no longer agile.
During this period of waiting for the new year, I became attached to the chicken, I fed her and changed her water regularly, she doesn't like dirts at all, when she poos, she will just shift her bum bum to the clean side of the bath, she won't even try to step on it. she will rather sit uncomfortably to avoid her body from touching the poo. This made me love her the more, she doesn't cry anyhow.
Every night, I'll reserve a torchlight for her inside the bath so it won't be dark. sometimes I play with her, if I remove the torch, she will start crying and she will stop when I return it back ..lols
I never saw myself being attracted to an animal like this, because am always scared of them. but from the day I met her, all my fear went away.
I begged my mom to let us keep her that I love her but she refused saying its exhausting to rear chicken.
On the last Sunday of the year, I came home from church to meet her death. they've just passed the knife through her throat when I came in. I shed tears and then I just lock up but I never ate from the chicken at all till it finished.
Looking forward to starting my own poultry farm this year by God's grace.

I get your point. When I said literate I meant those who understood and could communicate well in sign language. In fact deafs can hardly be literate in other fields without the ability to communicate and understand sign language (there are exceptions though). Special schools for deafs (which is available from Primary to University education) students are basically taught in sign language as well as the use of pictogram. One can hardly acquire a degree if he lacks ability to comprehend and communicate in the language.

Some deaf people lip-read. You've never seen or heard that before? Back in Uni, I had a friend who couldn't hear in both ears but could lipread. You'd hardly know because he's pretty good at it. He doesn't know how to sign and he speaks remarkably better than normal hearing people. Until you've lived or any form of sensible verbal dialogue with a deaf person, all you'll be doing is speculate. Just clearing the air on the emboldened, dassal.

I'm not sure you understood my point here. Not all literate deaf can sign! Inasmuch as this would benefit deaf people, one has to learn it. Though, I'm not undermining the initiative as it would go a long way in ensuring people living with certain disabilities are carried along.

If you care to know that are many deafs who are more educated, have more degrees and are more talented than you. They deserve to be carried along. Sign language is their "mother tongue" so they need to be kept in the know as well.

@ the emboldened. Not for all deaf people. Some can hold a conversation simply by lipreading. Not all deaf people sign. Get your facts though.

It should interest you to know not all deaf people (highly educated ones for instance) can sign because they can speak fluently having attended normal schools. The notion most Nigerians have that someone who is deaf can also be dumb is a silly one. Transcribing speeches could go a long way as it further promotes reading culture.

Private coaching won't be a bad idea honestly. It would go a long way ensuring the child retains all that has been taught. There's a kid I teach around here (albeit free of charge ) things he's yet to be taught at school. So when the teacher eventually touches the subject, it feels like a refresher. He's doing very well.
