Bro, na dem companies know why they always do that.
I have worked with many many of these chaps, and 9.9 out of 10 times, they don't know jack. Asides from the heavy phoney, nothing much else is seen. If you are referring to actual technical know-how, they fall short of the average Nigerian. I have come to conclude that it's just perception and hype. I'm sure I can't be the only person on this NL with that opinion.
I agree some people will get through the net either by networking or droping phoney at the interviews but definitely not 99% of them, the financial sector isnt that different (no be calculations CFA etc etc  grin )perhaps the (working)culture and environment might be challenging for the first few months but overall they will fit in perfectly.

oyb:
people who work abroard typically work as specialists. the way things are in nigeria, most of us are generalists. eg i as an engineer, i do electrical and air conditioning, data, fire alarm designs, i do my own drawings, i do my own contract documentation, i do some small hands on jacky work. . .if i were in yankee, i would proably have been trained in only one of the above , and i woukld be completely out of water, if asked to work on any of the others.

that is the issue that faces so many professionals that come back home imho; their environemnt has not prepared them towork in the nigerian environment

as AJK noted, they them fall back on the phone/accent and i can tell you with an accent and the right amount of bulls- you will go very far.

i have a friend from back in school who came from yankee in his teens. his siblings have more or less shed the yankee accent, but the guy no gree.in class, the guy would talk total op, and the lecturers would just be nodding their heads. the only guy it failed to work on was bj olfeagba. he immediately told the guy to stop talking nonsense.

there is nothing like an incomprehensible accent and the ability to bamboozle cheesy grin
Totally agree with you, not that i have any particular experience but i can just see people having to do more than their job spec
now i know why im always struggling to figure out what exactly you are, one minute you were talking cad, next some i.t stufftehn oil n gas

THE QUINTESSENTIAL NIGERIAN WORKER – 31/03/09

The Nigerian worker aspires to a point where his table is cleared of blame. This is achieved by ensuring there is somebody else is to blame. Preferably some patsy who is too weak to fight back. The strong overpower the weak.

The perfect Nigerian worker sails through his day with very little worry. He is not a team player. He is not here to help you or to provide solutions to your problems or to support you in any way. He is here to support himself and if you wish to support him, even better, as long as you deliver to his requirements and on time. He only believes in team work when it is useful to him meeting his own deliverables. Otherwise, it is an alien concept.

I come from an environment where it is encouraged to be a team player. In this environment, being a team player is asking for it. You never, ever take on some one elses work. Make a mistake and you are the one to take the blame for everything that has gone wrong since the other person started in the company. I just had an ear full from some one who was telling me what to do to correct his mistakes. I had taken on board his requests and subsequently when things did not go well, he started screaming in my ear that I did not follow his instructions.

I could have told him to go shove it but that would not be professional of me. He’s already going to stew in his own juices, I don’t have to make it worse for him (I should make it worse for him really, that’s probably what he would have done if the tables were turned)

Do I seek to become the perfect Nigerian worker with my tightly delineated job spec. and woe betide anyone that comes to ask for anything beyond my spec. or do I continue down the lonely path of being there for everyone, the quintessential team player that wins no medals for supporting the team (if such a concept exists)?

Is it just me or is a secret dictator emerging in Nigeria and we can't read the hand writtings on the wall

INEC should not control the activities of political parties and yet members of Political parties in executive position must not decamp. Who will enforce the rules? Presidency? o yea they are seeking more powers for police? and we all know the relationship between the police and the Presidency.

I am waiting to see if the National Assembly allows any of these criminal bills through.

President Yar'adua is designing a system for himself, it must be opposed with our last blood.

This man is too shy to campaign or compete he wants a custom rule tailored to his wishes and control. If he does no contest the next election, expect Yuguda to be the PDP leader. And is anybody wondering why Yuguda quickly decamped before the rule is changed by his father-in-law?
I am waiting to see if the national assembly allow ANY bill through!!! its been 2 years and theyve probably passed only two bills!!!

never heard of anyone with a criminal record in nigeria, i heard you pay about 5k to the police you get a police report wink

very good ideas though, the fingerprinting is a bit heavy handed plus the cost of implementation might be too high!

wow where did you get information about the lower division?

Kwara United
The Atonja Warriors, as the Ilorin outfit are called by their fans, look set to emerge tops in the National League Division One A group.
They were relegated last season and coach John Obuh was called in to salvage things. Like the old Stationary Stores were said to be guided by the spirit of their late founder, Israel Adebajo, Kwara United appear to be enjoying protection and guidance of a host number of spirits – AD Okafor, Abdullahi Bebe and Kafaru Alabi.
Don’t ask me why. But Kwara United currently top the group with 48 points, five points clear of second FC Taraba. .
In the remaining five games, Kwara United will play two at home (see fixtures above). Three of the games are on the road.
Mathematically, they may win all two home games to make a haul of 54 points.
Out of the three away matches there is a mathematical possibility two points on the road (probably vs NAF and Unicem Rovers).
If this eventually comes to pass, they would have stretched their total points haul to 56. Jalingo and Vola may not be a fertile venue for Kwara United to hunt for away points.
Reason is that FC Taraba and Adamawa United are actively involved in the promotion race and will be out to make things difficult for the Atonia Warriors. But before the trip to Vola for Adamawa which is the last game of the campaign, Kwara United would
I think they are called Afonja Warriors

I've always wondered why four teams get relegated from the premier league- i hope they bounce back
3SC's promotion will definitely make the league interesting again in a way considering their past

Tonynwosa:
@ DISGUY I've followed the comments and it's a pity your's displayed a great deal of ignorance and shallowness, it's because of your types that Nigeria is static today.how can a person who lived to witness the performance of the last governance of states in the federation ask what Donald Duke achieved with cross river?
It is very important that in forums like this, people have clear understanding of what they want to contribute.
The principal reason why Nigeria is where it is today is cos of corruption.this man ruled and was never invited by the EFCC or had a single petition against him,the only governor in the 36states without a petition.
Look at cross river today and compare it with what it used to be.
He grew tourism and that's another source of income for the state.Everybody wants an experience of Xmas in Calabar. do you understand the amount of money that flows into the state and the pocket of his people at this time?
do you know how much ogbudu generates?one can't help but admire the Tinapa dream. mind you Tinapa is on right now just that it's in phases and the present governor is not giving it as much publicity.
Donald duke did not wait to receive allocation,he thought of generating more funds for the state.look at the roads, the neatness of the place, paid salaries when due everybody was and is happy with him, this is the kind of man we should seek for and we're debating that SARAKI a broad day light thief should be president.I just can't help but weep for us all,
oh please his new appointee said it himself the state is in debt! people in the education sector of the state complained of having to sacrifice for Obudu and tinapa, that majority of the state resident cant afford. You are not in anyway trying to tell me the state is not paying for all the things put in place; how much is obudu and Tinapa generating? please come and give us the figures, there's a difference between having potential and actually bring in the revenue, building Disneyland in the midst of poverty is not my idea of development! how many companies are relocating to the state? what's the employment figures in the state when he was in power?
You probably lived in the state give us real data and evidence

In the nigerian context yes he did well but in the real sense nah I'll pass wink

ps i am not endorsing saraki for the presidency

sistawoman:
I thought polygamy was having more than one wife.

I guess i need some clarity.

Does the husband divorce the first wife and then remarry? If so that is not polygamy right? Not really

Dont polygamius households all live together in the same compound? Not necessarily, some can afford a second house or some just dont want the trouble of daily bickerings or some didnt seek consent from the first wife

Does not the first wife have to accept the second wife? Nope, the 'husband is the head of the family' rule applies, plus the first wife is usually probably a graduate but wont work and totally dependant on husband or she just accept it, it's a culture afterall

Is there some type of legal recourse left for the first wife if she does not accept the second wife? if she is married legally i guess she can file for divorce, no law to enforce childcare payments and other expenses though- basically at her own risk!

• Spring for transportation for your client: For crying out loud, they are potential buyers or renters of this ridiculous piece of crap that you are trying to sell or rent to them.

Why can't you just spring for a car and consider it a customer acquisition cost? After all, if you sell that 35 Million Naira house, your commission could range between 3.5 Million Naira (about $20,700) and 7 Million Naira (about $41,400). You can afford to buy a car or get a car hire. I can't.

• Be organised: In one case, I had to pick up the agent, who then asked me to wait at the Exxon Mobil station near 1004 estates to pick up another agent who would show us the house.

But it didn't end there because this ‘pickup' brought a young lady with him that he was "trying to train". Yeah, okay.

But then we picked up yet another agent only to get to the house and there was no one to open the gate. Align your contacts early on so that you are not wasting my time.
Properties › Re: Dear Realtors/ Estate Agents by DisGuy(op): 9:03pm On May 07, 2009
Don't meet me for the first time, show me ONE house and then look me in the eye and ask "are you ready to sign?" Hell No! For the prices of these houses, you had better get ready to show me a whole slew of homes for rent or for sale. Where do you think the money comes from?

• Another don't: when I walk into your house and can see the obvious signs of water damage on the ceiling, please don't tell me that that they are remnants from the construction of the house. No, fool, it is not a remnant from construction. It is an accumulation of rain water that has now leaked into the flat which you now want to paint over (without fixing the problem), and then rent out at some unseemly rate.

To the agent from two weeks ago who tried to tell me that the big gaping hole in a driveway, that could have swallowed a VW Beetle, was not evidence that the foundation of the house near the water was sinking, I say it is sinking.

Don't argue the point. To the woman who looked at me like I was stupid when I asked why there was a strong smell of moisture and mildew in the home: you do have water damage. I could see it all written on your walls. As a saying goes, "don't pee in my face and tell me its rain".
Properties › Re: Dear Realtors/ Estate Agents by DisGuy(op): 9:02pm On May 07, 2009
Dear Realtor, here are a few bullet points that you should keep with you as you show off property in Lagos:

• Clean the damn house
! Or ask your client(s) to get the house cleaned before they show it! How difficult is it to have someone come in, vacuum the carpet, mop the floor, cut the weeds, prune the flowers, wash the bathtubs and sinks and toilets and change any tiles that are coming off the floor? Bleach and water is a wonderful combination.

• What happened to paint? Paint
. It's a wonderful thing. Paint is your friend! And not that awful colour of bright yellow or bright green that I saw in a neighbourhood off the Lekki-Epe Expressway. Use muted or base colors like white or cream. It adds considerable value to your home and gives a welcome feeling to that potential buyer. There is no point having five luxury cars in your driveway and your home looks like crap.

• Repair your house. If the cupboard door is falling off, fix it. If there are cobwebs on the ceiling, sweep! If you haven't dusted, dust. If there is a leak, plug it. If you have an old appliance, find a way to dump it and don't leave it in the backyard. If there is an old car, have it towed away. If you have roaches, FUMIGATE!
Properties › Dear Realtors/ Estate Agents by DisGuy(op): 9:01pm On May 07, 2009
"How much is this going for?", I asked at a recent home showing. "It's only 140 Million Naira".

At today's exchange rate of 169 Naira to 1 USD, that amounts to approximately $828,000 (not to mention the 23% interest rate if you are successful in getting a mortgage facility), for a blob of cement that has uneven stairs, no natural lighting, foundation problems evident in the cracks in the walls, and in this case, a "love-vendor daddy" spiral staircase .

came across this really interesting column on 234next

polygamy is part of life in nigeria (Christians Muslims north south!) and till date people say its unnatural undecided
