Structures are aesthetic, examining room and the equipments yep. I so wish to see the ward rooms for admissions though.
Besides, if this is freely donated, how will the facility and healthcare workers be maintained?

Our benign challenge In Nigeria is maintenance and sustenance. But this facility sure does look it.

The renumeration has to do with the amount and level of education acquired, skills needed at the job and the use of scheme of service of nurses and midwives not the number of hours.
The work hours has been calculated, scrutinized and audited by the relevant bodies. It all boils down to the schedule of duty, number of nurses available, and the nurse patients ratio in Nigerian health system. A ratio of 2 nurses to 20 patients if maintained for 8 official duty hours will increase burn out rate in nurses and nobody wants that. So, nurses had to be exposed to as many patients as possible in less duration of 6 hours max and 12 hours for night duty.

I e been trying to find something out...besides NMCN, does the Nigerian. Nurses have an indemnity organization? E.g in SA, besides SANC, there is DENOSA ( www.denosa.org.za) This indemnity body is at the forefront in defense to rights and conditions of services of nursing personnel's.

Now In the beautiful and well outlined writeup, its a pointer that the nursing and midwife council is outright in deep slumber couples with the fact that Ministry of Health in line with their constitutioline objectives and expectations is failing abysmally.

Also I'm the case of internship, in developed countries, trainees from colleges from year 1 are introduced and allocated to ethical and professional clinical practises. Meaning for e.g Auxiliaries nurses have specified scope of practise and are thus allocated to various private and government hospitals for clinical skills development ( NB under supervision of Professional Nurses) thereby combining theoretical knowledge and clinical exposure. Same goes with year two till their finals as RNs. Isn't this the practise with Nigeria nursing colleges besides Universities undertaking such programs?

Please read this and take everything I say seriously. I know this patient because I was called to see him after d surgery in A&E .

He is a liar and a good one indeed. To start with, appendectomy is a registrar (lowest ranked resident doctors) procedure, but his own was done by one of the best youngest general surgeon in the country (he was the best candidate in both colleges for part ii if you know what I mean) because it was a complicated appendicitis (thus the urethral catheterization).

As per the money ,it was for surgical materials which were not included in the surgical pack patients pay for noteworthy is antibiotics and sutures. Infact , the money he was talking about was for suture materials used for his surgery which were provided for him by the consultant before the operation. Even though he refused paying the money he was seen everyday (doctors must see and document on their patient everyday from intern pre-round , reg ward round , Sr round and consultant usually once a week ) before he was dicharged .

The catheter was removed after 24hrs of surgery as it was documented in the post op order and was promptly removed by the house officer in charge . Most of the claims of this man are mere confabulations. the hospital management had set up a panel on his issue , himself , his lawyer and the consultant involved.

After critical examinination of the case file and the patient himself they discovered that he has no case to present because the stricture he came down with is likely to be due to background urethritis which he didn't disclose to his doctor initially.

He has gone to parrot FM(a radio station in Ogbomoso to blackmail the surgical team and the hospital) all to no avail because the consultant has engaged the station on legal battle for defirmation of character and they have stopped airing the nonsense, now it is vangaurd . The 1st time I saw this man post op during one of my A&E calls, I could tell a bit of his personality( fanatics, ingrate) . He has deprived other poor patient of a lots of benefits. Oga doesn't gives his suture out again now until u pay. This is a man who raised over 80k for patent in need of a major surgery, he does persuade us his residents to donate blood and cash for patients. Mr butcher the right thing to do is to seek a redress in the court of law and not blackmailing the hospital and doctors .we have to examine issues very critally before typing comments.

Some healthcare workers deserve admonition though as I personally see no reason why it must be the doc to approach patient for whatever settlement. That responsibility squarely rest on the shoulders of accounts dept, its a teaching hospital ma'am.

And if the man is found guilty, he should equally be made an example for defamation and perjury.

Yes, there are bad eggs in nursing, someone being saucy and mean is a personality thing and not an attribute of the pple in a profession. If a nurse was rude to u or was negligent report to the appropriate quarters and don't paint everyone black.
The issue of BNSC and SON nurses is by the way, every nurse whether BNSC or diplomate has to write and pass the same licensure exam and have the basic RN which qualifies them to practice as nurses, and it isn't the certificate a nurse holds that determines if she is a good nurse, a nurse with masters might not have the compassion, empathy and good interpersonal relationship the diplomate nurse has although better in knowledge, and besides all nurses are striving for professional advancement everyday so no qualms there.
All nurses might be painted black by every1 becos of some bad eggs they meet, but it doesn't change the fact that there are nurses working their butts off every minute even with limited resources trying to save and improve lives of pple who do not appreciate the.

Lame excuse. Do you know how many lives are saved in community centres in the rural areas? It's beyond using lanterns. Your attitude and passion for the job is very important.
Administer whatever first aid is available. Try to stabilize the patient, then you can refer the patient somewhere. The important thing is how you go about it.

Haven't you seen medical personnel attending to people in areas where disaster has occurred? Stability is the first step and key. Stabilize then move on. Come back and then try and alleviate the issue. We have seen 5 doctors attending to 500 people who are badly wounded and at the end of the day only a few usually end up dying.

Any hospital that doesn't have the most basic stuff like bandages, basic saline drips, painkillers should fold up. The medical personnel there should go and sell roasted yam.

Having been opportune to manage 3 hospitals in Lagos Island, Ilupeju and Victoria Island respectively. I think am qualified to say that my experiences in those areas exposed me to the very poor, average class, rich and the super rich. Giving me full insight into how some hospitals operate in Nigeria and why staff are not motivated.

In all my experiences, I instruct staff....never to request money before treatment not even registration card. Meaning I will start treatment immediately, stabilize my patients after which we can discuss payment modalities. Often times patients don't even hesitate to pay any amount they are charged and fully. Appreciating the approach. "Life First"

I class my patients into very poor, average and rich.

Very poor: Pay full very reduced fees, Pay reduced part fees, Pay reduced fees by installment or Pay Nothing ( when it's obvious )....At my discretion ignoring hospital protocol.

Average: Pay full moderate fees, Pay part moderate fees, Pay by installment. At my discretion. Ignoring hospital protocol.

Rich/Super Rich: Pay full mandatory fees or Pay by Installment. No discretion. No reduced fees. (Accessible and Affordable For All).

All emergency kits are available and easily accessible. Staff...including myself are fully on ground. Mini theatre and delivery room in ready state. 24/7.

All patients are accessed as quickly as possible, those beyond our scope are stabilized if necessary and referred immediately.

In that way, fund is available to run daily activities and pay salary. Nobody dies in the hospital (Primary Goal)

Was not in anyway related to the owners of the 3 hospitals. Each hospital owed their staff minimum 2 months salary and those that supply them drugs etc. My decision is final because its my license that is at stake not theirs.

Bottom line is protocols have to be broken to save lives even if your job is on the line.

Save life before money.

Interestingly..I never lost my job. Neither did the owners sanction me for giving free service at times including free normal delivery or charging the super rich exorbitantly because that's what subsidize for the poor.

The 3 hospitals gained more patients from my approach and turn over was great. And they became the first point of call within the locality despite being previously written off as dead zone for anyone to come out there alive. Staff salary was increased for the first time over 6 -12 yrs. (Motivating Staff)

Hospital management needs to be flexible in their operations, motivate their staff paying salary and on time and equipping their establishments.

No life was lost in any of those hospitals during my stay. Not because we were the best, but for putting life first before money, making it affordable and accessible for all and attitudinal change patients and hospital staff.

It's easy to finger point, but patients and medical staff attitude needs to change. Only then can we reduce avoidable deaths.

Most of the problems in our health care are due to administrative incompetence and poor planning.

Nigerian Medical Association has become more of a political organization than an apex health professionals body, they claim to be fighting for better health care but all they do bully paramedical professionals, cover up mismanagement by their colleagues, blame non-medical professionals and allocate budgetary provisions to themselves, use appropriated funds to buy out-dated,substandard or refurbished equipment even when budget was made for standard state of the art equipment.
i have a friend who sells medical equipment, if you get to hear what he experiences in dealing with govts hospital and health ministry mgt.
No medical equipment purchase request can be approved or purchased without the admin or hospital management MDs (if not the commissioner) signing the approval.
Budget for medical equipment are made with prices for the latest or modern equipment with are usually very expensive (often 3-4x the actual cost, to provide for some %tage to some top officials). Once the budget is approved, the equipment eventually purchased is usually of less quality and specifications approved for purchase the rest of the funds is pocketed and covered up by the beneficiaries.
After a couple of years, often less than the warranty period, the equipment becomes faulty as expected, are left unserviced for a while and finally auctioned and bought by same Doctors for their own private clinics often at ridiculously lower rate than market price.


But in Nigeria, these other health care team members are looked down on or disrespected by medical doctors. sometimes, MDs wants people to believe that these other professions are irrelevant and they can be done without.
Nobody else advises govts. on health care policies and expenditure other than medical doctors, if the policies are failing, facilities are under staffed, under equipped etc, blame for their failure to do the needful. the frequents strikes they embark of for better working conditions are often presented to the public as demands for equipment and facility, in fact, they are usually for their salaries, allowances and remunerations.
The consultants no longer have time to supervise their residents, they run around using govt time to attend private patients in several private hospitals or their private hospitals/clinics.

The worst culprits are the administrative doctors, event young medical doctors are victims too.
Until Nigerians begin to make hospitals answer questions on questionable deaths of relatives, the situation will remain.

The poor justice system in Nigeria also means that people cannot wait for the length of time it takes to get justice, the cover-up of questionable deaths and injuries by other doctors to avoid justice, the believe that doctors are demi-gods by many uninformed people also does not help matters. In the civilised countries, the fear of malpractice suits by aggrieved patients or relatives of patients put the doctors on the alert.

I expect fireworks from MDs and many uninformed doctors-worshipping wailers here

We are in biiiiiiiiiig trouble.

Nigerians are the ones troubling Nigeria.

It's not an excuse you are giving. The duty of every medical personnel is to save life. Imagine how silly you are to say what you have said and called it a defence.
Haven't you met doctors who try to save accident victims even when they do not have their kits with them? They use whatever is available and make an attempt. No matter the situation, the medical personnel should make an attempt to help, reassure the patient and kindly refer them somewhere else.
This is not usually the case as our Nigerian nurses and doctors are arrogant and treat you like thrash.
Like the Nigerian society, you are only treated with respect if you have money.
Mr/Madam nurse, you excuse or defense is lame. The family of the man should have lynched you also. You people's attitude and not lack of facilities caused the man's death.

What Do you expect a nurse on duty to do with a new patient while he was busy with another patient in labor? It's called priority.Besides the fact there were only two nurses on duty...in a general hospital where there should be at least 4 per ward...inclusive of intern. And only one doctor on duty... Who might also be an intern.

In health related issues..you just don't " use anything " to handle procedures. Healthcare workers using kerosene lantern while suturing or handling an invasive procedure itself is a health risk.No matter how skilled you are.chances of infection and cross Infection is high. Besides you could land yourself with a medico legal hazard Instances.

This is grandstanding by an inept and direction-less President. This would only appease our patriotism but nothing else, if it didn't work in the 80s it wouldn't work now.
I don't subscribe to European Technicians posing as Engineers here, but the people Bubu wants to repatriate are West African artisans. We signed ECOWAS protocol on free movement for a reason and those in fear of repatriations are brick and block layers, carpenters, painters, welders, fabricators, plumbers. Those jobs can hardly be described as jobs by Europeans.

You are an alarmist and need to be constructive in your criticisms.

1. No where in the article did Pres Buhari said foreign workers be deported.Its your own version to create negative e-sensation.

2.Pres Buhari according to the article said moves would be made to prevent influx of skilled workers in construction..meaning government shall provide training opportunities for our own citizens ( and obvious residents,foreigners inclusive, in the country) .

3. Most skilled and experienced hands have and and are still fleeing the country to sell their skills for better paying offers abroad ,than what corrupt employment practises ( God fatherism), scam employment, useless and unfavourable contract job offers where employees ended up be exploited at home....just to mention a few.

4. Nigeria needs an effective and efficient labor law policies that would protect citizens and labour engagement in the country.Yes we need foreign skilled hands just as much as we also have the greater need to improve OUR OWN.

This is one of the many ways Nigeria keep getting it wrong.You keep students longer in class doesn't mean they would turn out better.Its Quality ( and real life exposure in this case) that matters and not Quantity.

Such establishment should give opportunity for the general public and stake holders to tender their informed opinions on matters such as this and take the general public opinion into serious consideration. Not just reeling out " ideas" for the public audience and intending students without listening to their input.
