Ripples Nigeria findings have uncovered that GSM service providers in the country defraud Nigerians to a whooping tune of about N547bn every year.
Nigeria has 149,787,120 active Global System for Mobile communication (GSM) lines as at November 2015 according to figures from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).


At N50 deductible on SMS every five days of subscription, invariably, Nigerians lose over N7.5 billion every five days, and N547b yearly through such unsolicited SMS.
This is not counting other unsolicited SMS that attracts N100 per week, and unsolicited calls that also attract separate charges.
In a move to address the situation, the House of Representatives during the weekend suggested a fine of N5million for GSM providers involved in unsolicited calls and text messages.

Nigeria's Oldest Female Commercial Vehicle Driver And How She Lost Her Estate



Read how i met Nigeria's unarguably oldest driver of a commercial vehicle still in active service..

Like 2 minutes into the trip i advised her to put on her seat belt and she told me that it chokes her as she is diabetic, and just returned from admission in the hospital because her blood sugar level spiked terribly. Two things i noticed immediately were her voice which was very calm, confident though low; and the polished and courteous manner she replied me.


Her name is Mrs Felicia Chidi (Chief Ugonma). She is 58 years old and from Enugu State. She told me that she had lived in USA and UK and she is a trained nurse and worked in these countries as a nurse.



Chief now informed me that like 2011 she was summoned from her base abroad that her properties in Nigeria were being claimed by some land-grabbers.

She informed me that she had built a mini estate comprising of 3 duplexes, 6 shops, 1 bungalow, 2 flats, on 43 Ogundana street, off Allen Ave, ikeja, Lagos.

But as she rushed back, she realised that one Yoruba family had laid claims to her entire estate which she said she has all her documents to including Certificate of Occupancy. But the family claimed that they are the rightful owners. And had taken her to court in her absence and judgment was also deliberated and served in her absence transferring ownership to them.

That was how she became homeless and houseless and moved from being a landlady of an estate to becoming a tenant living outside Lagos State.

She said she engaged the services of a lawyer who collected N1,500,000 from her yet did not make any headway.

She now cried to the family at Ikeja that sold the land to her and they also demanded another huge amount from her before they would agree to bring out their original family land register and testify on her behalf.

In the course of going through all these the same family that forcefully took over her properties, sent thugs armed with guns to her house and kidnapped her daughter, took her valuables including plasma television sets and packed all into her Toyota Sienna bus and told her to hand over her original title documents to the said properties which she refused. They then told her that before they would release her abducted daughter she would pay a ransom and they took her in another vehicle to the bank where she withdrew her final savings and paid them before they released her daughter.

This event has also made her daughters so scared of returning to Nigeria. And as a widow now battling ill-health and no money again, she got to her wit's end and ended up using her Toyota Sienna to run commercial transportation.

Even doing this has not come easy as she had to contend with different unions and her fellow male drivers who found it very difficult accepting a female driver in their midst. As she was enduring the physical and psychological trauma, her car was also taking some bashings especially deliberate ones from the drivers who wanted to frustrate her out of their park. But knowing that she won't have another source of livelihood, she stood her grounds, enduring all sorts from human beings and from ill-health as she was now taking ill more frequently, spending the little money she makes on only food and medications.

Moreover, her life is still not safe from those who had stolen her estate and even kidnapped her daughter released only after receiving ransom payment.



I promised her that i will write about her and pray that she gets justice.

Though, you are wrong to insinuate that, paying tax is the responsility of everyone. It is not even done that way in industrialized and even ultra capatalistic societies. Taxation policies should be an instrument of government to establish minimum living standards across it's people, it should also serve as an economic equalizer, else it becomes repressive to many....Many citizens who fall at this minimum income borderline should not be made to pay taxes, as doing so will that takes below the sustainability threshold...and those whose income are below this borderline should get some redistribution from the government to push them up towards the minimum threshold.

Therefore, the government should first establish minimum sustainability thresholds and build it's tax policies around it, instead of going around and chasing down every living soul for tax money, some can't simply afford to pay and government agents should not inhibit their means of livelihood as a result of that.

My suggestion will be to have two markets of that category at two extremes of Lagos. That will reduce the congestion on Lagos road infrastructure. A situation where all markets in Lagos go to a central point for their food items is too much of a burden.

Actually i concur with him. Let only abattoirs receive the cows and cattles and residents buy from meat market wholesale stores.For starters it reduces the influx of these murderous nomardic herders by allowing them live and do as they please among residents.

In developed countries, only on farms do you buy live animals for consumption (open auction).If you need as little as 2kg of beef or chicken, you go to meat market where they are already prepared under monitored and recorded hygienic conditions ( by the health and environment departments) packaged,frozen or kept under cold temperature for preservation label and price tagged.

This also applies to animal body parts..from complete legs to other allowable parts for consumption.

This can be done if the greedy LG councilors that only look at selling and fining permits would sit,think and consider Safety, Health and Improving our Environmental standards.

A clearer picture of why Fulani herdsmen invaded Agatu local government area of Benue state emerged, Friday, at a stakeholders meeting organised by the Inspector General Of Police, IGP, Solomon Arase, when the leader of the herdsmen in the besieged community, Ardo Boderi, claimed that over 10,000 cattle were allegedly killed by people of the area.

The meeting held in Makurdi, the Benue state capital, had in attendance top Benue State government functionaries, chiefs and stakeholders from Agatu and Fulani leaders in both Benue and Nasarawa state and  was presided over by the IGP.

Ado Boderi, who spoke on behalf of the Fulani community insisted that the act sparked off the crisis but decried the role being played by criminal elements from both sides which he claimed escalated the crisis. On his part, Akpa Iduh who spoke on behalf of the Agatu people, said the Fulani were bent on taking over Agatu land hence their resort to recruiting mercenaries to wipe out his people. He lamented that the crisis had escalated to a war situation where women, children and the elderly were killed indiscriminately by the invaders and urged the authorities to stop the carnage in Agatu land.

Operatives of the Lagos state investigation Bureau have arrested a 46-year-old land agent for been in possession of a phone of an MTN staff who was murdered on his way to work. It was learned that, the suspect identified as Abidioun Fabore, was nabbed after police investigations revealed that he was using the smart phone of David Olatunji Olawunmi who was murdered around tipper garage bus stop in Mowe.

Late David Olatunji Olawunmi left his house in Goshen Estate, Redeem Camp in Mowe at about 5:30 am to join their staff bus at Mowe tipper Garage but was robbed and stabbed to death by unknown hoodlums. His body was later recovered at tipper garage without his phone According to a close family relative (names with held) who spoke to Crime Guard. Said the source: “It was his wife who lives outside the country that alerted us (family members) that something was wrong, as she was speaking with him on the phone early that morning when all of a sudden the line went dead.
According to his wife they were both discussing that morning when he was going to work. She said ‘Later I didn’t hear anything again from his end. I called his line back severally, but it was unanswered. Later the line was switched off’. It was at this point she became suspicious and called us to help her reach her husband. True to her suspicion, when we called David’s line it was switched off and when we sent someone later to his place his corpse was found at the bus stop in Mowe. Thereafter we alerted the police and his corpse was deposited at the mortuary.”

It was gathered that after the ugly incident, one Mr. Wale , on behalf of the deceased family reported through a petition to the Commissioner of Police that on the 21st of October his brother named David Olatunji Olawunmi, a staff of MTN communication who left his house in Goshen Estate Redeem Cap Mowe at about 5:30 am to join their staff bus at Mowe tipper garage was robbed and stabbed to death by unknown hoodlums. His body was later found at tipper garage without his phones.
According to the police, during investigation, the analysis conducted on one of the victim’s phones revealed that the phone was used on the October, 22, 2015 days after the victim’s death. It was further revealed that the said subscriber was one Biodun Fabore. He was consequently arrested and on interrogation, he admitted being the owner of the sim card. He claimed to have bought the said phone but could not produce the source. He also claimed to have given the phone to one of his boys who he could not produce.

According to 46-year-old Abidioun Fabore, “I am a land agent; I have two wives, and I have four children. My first wife, a hairdresser gave birth to three while the second who rents film bore one for me.
I didn’t steal the phone; neither did I kill the owner of the phone. I actually bought the phone from one Idowu for N11, 000. Idowu lives in my neighbourhood. I am not lying. Idowu is known as Yaya in Ikorodu while he bears Idowu at Mowe. We work together as land agents.

The annoying aspect is that sometime after I bought the phone from Idowu, he stole in one of the building sites where we worked. That was when we chased him away. We had to meet with the Baale of the community and report the activities of Idowu to him; it was the Baale that chased him out. Right now he has escaped to Ikorodu area.

Sometime in January, the police arrested my wife during investigation, they invited me but I refused to go because I didn’t know the crime she committed. I thought she was arrested because of a land issue . If I knew it was this phone issue I would have showed myself. I would have arrested the people who sold the phones to me. After my wife was granted bail she traced Idowu to his house in Mowe where he ia now at large.

Lagos: Killings continue in Mile 12 ethnic clash

Some parts of the   Mile 12 market and environs in Kosofe Local Government Area of Lagos, yesterday, were tension-soaked  following fresh killings by armed hoodlums suspected to be from the Northern part of the country. Four persons were reported killed in the renewed midnight ethnic clash which started on Wednesday night. Saturday Vanguard gathered that in spite of the curfew imposed in the area, some armed men arrived at  the early hours of yesterday through the canal and destroyed some shops in the market. Some homeless persons sleeping in the market and adjourning streets were suspected to have been killed.


Ketu-traders
A resident, who simply gave his name as Oluwatimileyin, said: “ The Hausa men  crossed the Agilinti river with canoe and attacked residents of an estate at Isheri North, last night. They even burnt some buildings”.

Irked by the invasion, some armed  Yoruba  youths  converged close to the market in readiness for another clash at about 1pm.  The irate youths, who chanted war songs attempted to invade the market and destroy  shops belonging to  Hausa traders.  But they were dispersed by security operatives with tear gas cannisters.

Consequently, residents in the affected streets have been fleeing their abodes, following alleged threats by some Hausa youths to set their houses on fire at midnight.  Also, Hausa residents in the area have abandoned their homes for fear of being caught in the ethnic war. The popular Mile 12 market  was Thursday, turned into a theatre of war, during which no fewer than 12 persons were killed and several others injured. What started like a storm in a tea cup on Tuesday, snowballed into a big fracas two days later.

The  ongoing crisis which began with a verbal confrontation  took a violent twist  after a commercial motorcyclist  popularly called okada hit a female trader. Consequently,  the popular Mile 12 market was  shut by the state government, with curfew imposed on four neighbouring streets:  Maidan, Agilinti 1, Agilinti 2 and Oniyanrin, close to the market.

How it happened

According to eye witnesses’ account, a commercial motorcyclist from the northern part of the country who was riding against traffic  hit one of the residents, a Yoruba woman who sustained severe injuries. This attracted sympathy from co-residents, who argued that she should be taken to a nearby hospital at the expense of the rider.

The Okada rider bluntly refused the idea and called his colleagues from the same ethnic group, during which a fight ensued.  This matter was amicably settled by some community leaders. Unfortunately, the victim passed on the following day, a development that drew the anger of the woman’s friends and subsequently led to fresh crisis on Thursday.

On that Thursday most of those who became victims of the clash were commuters either going or returning from work. Sensing danger, the Okada rider’s friends and other co-okada riders from the Northern extraction re-mobilised and positioned themselves in various places wielding dangerous weapons to attack the Yoruba. The news spread such that some hoodlums took advantage of the situation by proceeding to Mile 12 market to vandalise and loot the traders’ shops.

On noticing the development, the Hausa also strategised to torch and vandalise vehicles and buildings and by the time the dust settled, no fewer than 12 lives were lost while 12 buildings, 10 vehicles and other valuable items were destroyed.

Victims’ accounts

Some of the victims, who spoke to Saturday Vanguard, condemned the belated response of the Police at Mile 12 Division. “The  Police at Mile 12 did not respond on time and when they eventually arrived the scene, they could not stop the raging war,’’ Mr Igba Andrew, one of the victims, who was badly injured  and who also had his two-year-old son  kidnapped during the incident said: “I was at home when some Hausas came with guns, broken bottles and matchetes and forcefully took my son away and up till now, his whereabouts remain unknown,”

A clergy, Pastor Adekunle Tanimowo, had his only building, church and car razed. ‘’I am left with nothing and only God can restore me. I was in the church preparing for the day’s event when my wife screamed in the house and I rushed to attend to her but to our surprise, some men were seen afar off conversing in Hausa language and we sensed danger. Without wasting time, we fled the scene with our children and while hiding somewhere, I got a call from somebody who alerted me that all our properties have been torched by the attackers.”

Another victim, Mr Kunle Afariogun, who escaped death by the whiskers said he ran into the hoodlums on his way back from work. ‘’Thank God I understand Hausa language, if not, only God knows what would have happened to me. I was on my way home when I ran into them and they asked me if I were an Hausa man and I answered in the affirmative. But they were not convinced and asked me to start speaking in Hausa Language which I did and they responded in Hausa Language ‘he is one of us, don’t kill him.’’’

A resident of Agilinti, Mrs Oluwakemi Ologbon, who is presently seeking refuge in Ikorodu, said she was scared to return to the area. ‘’My husband is taking refuge with his friend while I am taking refuge with my elder sister. Yesterday’s experience was a signal that Boko Haram has infiltrated Lagos and the government must act fast. Thank God I escaped with all my children but what about so many people who have lost their means of livelihood? Six buildings to my house were razed when I fled with my family but my husband decided to stay elsewhere while we all came to Ikorodu,” she said.

Residents flee homes over possible reprisal attacks

When Saturday Vanguard visited the community, it was gathered that many residents had left their homes in order to avoid been lynched by the hoodlums. A resident, Motunrayo, who spoke to Saturday Vanguard on phone said: “I have left for Mowe. And I am not the only one who has left the community. Some members of the community had gone as far as Ibadan. I don’t want to die. I believe that going to Mowe will help me evade any attack.”

On how she escaped, she said: “We moved through the bush path. And on getting to Isheri-Osun axis, we boarded vehicles to our respective locations.” Motunrayo noted that they would not return until there was strong assurance from the government and the traditional rulers of both communities that normalcy has returned.

Ambode meets traditional rulers in crisis location

Meanwhile, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, yesterday, met with traditional leaders of Mile 12 and environs, to find ways of resolving the ongoing fracas, 24 hours after declaring curfew in the area. At the meeting held behind closed doors in Alausa Secretariat, Ikeja, sources said that Ambode who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, SSG, Mr. Tunji Bello, asked the traditional rulers to instruct their people to sheathe their swords in order for peace to return to the community.

Saturday Vanguard gathered that the Governor assured the traditional rulers that the government was working with the security operatives to end the frequent face-off between the Hausa and Yoruba communities in the axis. In an interview with Saturday Vanguard, Baale of Maidan-Mile 12, Babatunde Ogunjobi, said that the crux of our meeting was on the ongoing crisis in Mile 12, saying “we used the opportunity to express our displeasure over the crisis rocking our community.’’

However, armed security men have been strategically positioned to ward off any reprisal attack. Saturday Vanguard gathered over 50 persons were arrested yesterday in connection with the crisis and were currently being detained at the State Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Department,SCIID. Spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command , Dolapo Badmus, said there was no fresh killing yesterday.

She said “the police have dominated the place since Thursday. We are also assisted by the Nigerian Army. We have almost 141 people arrested in connection with the case and we will charge them to court. The suspects were arrested since yesterday (Thursday ) up to the early hours of this morning (yesterday) . All she did was to get raw materials for compounding the active ingredient (metronidazole), use chemistry knowledge of the reaction (out in public domain) to produce it, weigh 20g den add other rubbish (chalk, colouring etc) to produce d powder in tableet form and make extra profit. Fifteen obstetrics and gynaecologists (O and Gs) at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) have been trained to use a vacuum device known as Kiwi to conduct vaginal delivery of babies.
An obstetric and gynaecologist based in Ireland, Dr Oluwole Alabi whose company Mufam Advertising Trust Limited recommended the tool, said the device would discourage the rate hospital carry out caesarian section (CS).
According to him, the device will help to reduce child mortality because it can be used to assist women in labour deliver safely.
Alabi said the device encompasses all aspects of conventional delivery equipment. Unlike the bogus conventional machine used to induce delivery, it is portable and power-free, he added.
He said a doctor can single handedly deliver an expectant mother of a baby. “This is not so in the case of conventional delivery machine as many staff are required to operate it,” he said.
The training, he said, was important without which th mechanism may become problematic to the users and,as such and put expectant mothers and their babies in danger.
According to him, the device is easy to use and it has about 99 per cent chances of assisting women achieve vaginal delivery without complications.
This, he said, will prevent or reduce deliveries through caesarian section (CS).
The Managing Director of the company, Dr Gbenga Salau, said his organisation introduced the product into Nigeria so that expectant mothers do not die needlessly during child birth.
He said a unit of the device costs about N10,000, adding that Salau, who is the convener of the training, said the government and private organisation can buy into the programme.
