ProgrammingRe: What Is The Future Of Nigeria's Software Industry? by edicolove: 10:56am On Aug 18, 2011
I just like to say I am happy aboout this discuss because I am a passionate Nigerian who has been programming for almost 20 years now and I can tell you a lot about Nigeria's software Industry and I think i got suggestions that can help us all. I will start with a few.

1.  If we must make a difference, we must put away some of the worms that have held us back. First we must be trust worthy. Nigerians are not trustworthy. Anytime you try to do a business with a Nigerian, he or she always tries to swindle you one way or the other. Nigerians dont like to share and they are unnecessarily competitive instead of being complimentary. The software revolutions in other countries started with trustworthy collaborations.
2.  We must look beyond immediate profits and have a long term vision. That might mean doing something temporarily that can sustain you while you pursue your vision.
3.  We must be willing to share and we must appreciate and respect those who share and give them their credit where necessary. Nigerians never give credits for things they use and they are always very ungrateful. The average Nigerian does not know how to say a heartfelt thank you.
4.  We must be honest about what we do. We must sign MOUs and contracts where necessary. Nigerians hate signing contracts and always try to subvert the ones they have signed. They always try to take more than their share of a deal and without putting much into it.

I am not saying all these to bash Nigerians, I am just talking from experience. I have about 5 software products I have developed and several organizations have used across the country and I know what I suffered over the years to sell and implement them. I was taking advantage of several times, majorly because I didnt have much business experience initially. I was also taking advantage of by partners who were always very lazy but wanted to always collect their "cut". From government to private sector, everyone wants to collect their "cut". So we must try to put all these aside and emerge as a new crop of Nigerians who are willing to change their country.

Forget about NEPA and all, they cant stop you if you are serious. A man with a laptop does not have a problem with electricity. I have 2 laptops and a desktop and work from my laptop mostly. All you need is a UPS and a car battery and you can work as long as you like while NEPA can charge your battery  in between. You can also get a small generator to charge the battery if NEPA  is off for a long time.

I am willing to collaborate on projects with serious guys. I am about to release 3 new revolutionary mobile products and already have partners in cote d'voire and Kenya. There are a lot of opportunities out there and I can answer your questions freely on how to go about developing your software and marketing for Nigeria. You can also attend my online free seminars for those who are new to programming and once a month "small fee" seminars in Lagos on java and mobile/web applications development for those who wont mind paying a small fee.
EducationRe: GEJ, Apple Corp, And Building New Universities by edicolove: 8:26pm On Aug 17, 2011
misterh:
Personally, the question is not about building more universities but maintaining the existing ones. Moreover more graduates are churned out every year with no corresponding job opportunities. There is no denial of the importance of education. The govt has not shown enough commitment in the education sector.
There is one point many people seem to always miss. The purpose of improving education is not just for more graduates to be produced but for people to become more knowledgeable and consequently creative. The truth about Nigeria is that it isnt the government that will transform it. It is you and I. What we do need from the government are basic policies and structures that will help us run. But I still see a lot of people talking about government transformation and stuff. please do read about the asian tigers and their rise. the government provided the framework but the people provided the revolution. lets fight for the environment we need and then lets rise and develop our nation. politicians will not do it for us.

one way to start is to see collaborative projects in all sectors in forums like this. All i keep seeing are hopeless negative comments devoid of vision and a passion to change our nation.
EducationRe: GEJ, Apple Corp, And Building New Universities by edicolove: 6:45pm On Aug 17, 2011
The fact that there is so much misunderstanding of such a simple statement is enough justification for the statement. Many of the responses on this page is ignorance gone on rampage.

1. Exxon mobil is not a knowledge based company. A knowledge based company is a company whose product is knowledge. Simple as that. No hidden definitions. Web companies, data services companies, software companies are examples of knowledge based companies.
2. The biggest companies in the world today are knowledge based companies simple because we are in the information age. wew! I cant believe I just said that. I is supposed to be sooooooo obvious.
3. GEJ should be commended for trying to emphasize we should start looking away from oil. The Ghanians call it Nigeria's curse.
4. Did you see how many people failed Jamb and WAEC? it was a disaster.
5. GEJ didnt say it was an achievement. I dont know where someone infered that from? Another reason GEJ is justified to make the statement. The statement was simply a response to some who questioned his focus on the education sector in the budget. He was only soliciting the populace support for the initiative which is something every good leader does. that is carry the masses along in his policies.
6. Please, it is within your right to critisize but do it with some intelligence and dont show us a reason why GEJ must really put a lot of money in the education sector, #Itssofrustratingexplainingsuchasimplestatement

carla2009:
This is to all of you in this forum. Obasanjo is the best President Nigeria has ever had. If you know all that is involved in being President in Nigeria, then you would appreciate Baba. Unfortunately, Baba would have to die before many of you would open up your minds to see the guy as a selfless unifying leader. His enemies are very powerful and do not sleep at all. They make up, spread and manipulate information to make him look like a villain using all the mainstream news media to do their dirty job. No wonder National mirror is reaching out to him to tell his own story.

For example, how many of you knew that the power stations that was supposed to give Nigeria 5000MW was 75% complete and all Yar'Adua had to do was to disburse the last tranche of funds? Well it is true. YarAdua and his goons decided to cancel the works and probe the contracts thereby loosing money. It is the same work that was suspended that we are now picking up again and thus paying additional money to revive. I leave you all with your consciences each time you join the let us bash Baba frenzy.
This is one of the best post i have read on nairaland. i have read a lot of articlesbashing OBJ and am yet to read an oobjective one. all i see is an echo of ACN propaganda. Just because baba tried to outwit them which is not an evil thing unless of course you are ACN. Baba is the only patriotic Nigerian out there so far as i can see. He had a lot of enemies and sometimes, his methods werent the best because he has a military background but it was never indoubt that he loved nigeria. For example i want to ask what is wrong in a man desiring to have a thord term in office. The opposition media just demonised the idea and all of you jumped on the band wagon like the characters in animal farm and started bleeping. there is nothing wrong in a man wanting 3rd term. what would have been wrong is if he had tried to take it by force. but the opposition made it look like a criminal act and you lot just started following. It is a pity we do not even know who our reall enemies are. ask those bashing him here now to give you an objective view of what he did wrong and they will not have any serious point.

Its interesting to know I hit you so hard, you had to post your defense like 4 or 5 times and in different formats and still couldnt debunk them. I will only add that my pain is that Nigerians have a culture that makes them timid and not act when they should. In countries like Italy and Ghana, people boycotted any network that was not friendly to them. In Nigeria, people pretend and "form" and that gives the networks the edge to do what they like. People actually prefer to buy things at a more expensive rate in Nigeria. For example, Nigeria has about the most expensive hotels in the world with terrible services. It is a cultural problem we have. But some of us will continue to inform the public about their rights and how not to allow themselves to be exploited.

As for MTN, they are creating a lot of bad blood and hatred among Nigerians. You need to see hour people react sometimes when you talk of MTN. They are seen as thieves and exploiters. They may seem to be making money now but they are going to suffer it in the future as it will come to a time when people will be really fed up and the reaction might be very very bad. Number portability is the first step so lets all start to canvass for it.

@rman

Your excuses are soooooooooo lame, I will help you by making a few points clear

1.  None of us care about Glo or MTN or Etisalat or Airtel. We only care about whats best for us. So whoever gives us the best service and value for money is the one we will go with.

2. I dont know which positives you say MTN bring. You talk like MTN is doing us a favor. If they havent come in other people will have. They are a business organisation who are being paid for the service they are rendering. They are not a philanthropic organisation.

3. MTN foundation? you must be joking right? Have you seen how much Bill Gates foundation invests in Africa? MTN foundation my foot. How much have they given back? peanuts! Absolute peanuts! Even the reality shows where they are supposed to give back, they dont even spend money. They run it as a business and the show takes care of itself. Have you seen how much Glo has invested in the entertainment industry and how much Indomie has invested in schools? what have you guys done differently? shiooooo!

4. I have been to SA and Ghana. MTN treats Nigerian customers like trash. Call rates are so low in Ghana that it was better for me to use my Ghana MTN line to call other Nigerian MTN lines when i was back in Nigeria. I mena making a roaming call with my GH line was cheaper than using a Nigerian SIM right here in Naija. Hillarious isnt it?

5. I am fully aware that MTN broke even in less than 2 years. No company breaks even Internationally in 4 to 5 years. MTN broke even in less than 2 years amidst all the cry of no electricity and all. They sold sim cards for as much as 30k that is $200 for a SIM card! They then went on to throw a party in SA.

6. Dont tell me about infrastructure because Glo was first to invest in infrastructure (as IIL) but lost out because of the NCC issue. MTN and Econet launched with IIL equipment. Even after starting late, Glo is still the only one with a full national fibre optic backbone on the ground. MTN is just starting to lay theirs after so many years. They just going thru the Ikeja area now. Glo is about to launch an under sea cable. Thats why they are about the best in Internet connectivity along with VISA, ZOOM, Starcomms and a few others. MTN still has one of the worst Internet connections. Ask everywhere.

7. I could go on and on but it isnt necessary. Someone talked of MTN selling more recharge cards. You must be joking. I posted earlier how my brother sent me an MTN N1500 card and it took me a whole day to sell it because everyone i tried to sell to kept telling me they have dropped their MTN or they only use it to receive. I got a Glo card yesterday and sold with the second attempt. In Lagos, Airtel still remains the most stable network. And the most customer friendly.

Just to add. have you ever been to an MTN office? Like the one at Okpebi/Allen? That is enough to discourage anyone from using MTN

stanech:
Ok question time:

1.If MTN is a reapoff y are they still having the largest number of subscribers.

2. Who are those still using the network even after knowing that it is a reapoff.

3. How do we deal with the situation,

To me the reason MTN has been able to stay in the market even after its clients knowing about their greed is stability. I have used all other GSM services (apart for MTEL) and I noticed that:

1. MTN is d only line that when u press d dial botton u hear someone on the otherside. Not hearing urself over again.

2. It does not take forever to check your balance or subscribe to any of their services.

I use other lines because they are cheap. But whenever I want to make an urgent call without dissapointment my MTN is there for me.

Most people will rather pay for a good xpensive product than manage a cheap bad one.
Are you kidding me? Are you from another planet?

1. MTN is the only line where sometimes you cannot recharge for 3 days and they dont even apologise
2. MTN has the worst customer service of them all
3. Many times I call with MTN, i hear the wrong person talking in the background
4. Even an NCC report sometime in 2009 showed that MTN had the highest number of drop calls.

You must be an MTN staff

I have used all the networks, including Multilinks, startcomms, Visa. MTN is one of the worst lines out there. I did an experiment travelling from Lagos to Abuja by road. I had MTN, Glo and AIrtel on. Throughout the journey, GLo stayed up the most and only went out for around 45mins all thru the journey. This happened mostly between Auchi and Lokoja area. MTN went out for almost 2 hours and Airtel went out for close to 4 hours. That statistics may have changed a bit now since they all are expanding. But then, Glo had the most spread.

What has made MTN the most used is simply their marketing strategy. They sold lies and hype to Nigerians and used simple psychology on Nigerians. They made people believe that they were the big boys network; i dont know whatever that means. But in a country like Naija, that was a good strategy. Another factor was the constant fight withing Airtel from inception. Airtel (then Econet woreless) was the first network to launch and make calls. But their constant fighting and internall wars slowed them down. Glo would have been the biggest. They were supposed to be among the first 3 netwroks when they bidded as IIL but their bid was rejected because they refused the spectrum NCC gave them because of a fear of litigation. They already had their equipment on the ground and had to sell some of it to MTN and Econet Wireless because the rule said they could not start till another 3 or 5 years or so.

I have people working in MTN and i can tell you they are the most poorly paid. The so called big boys network paying the least. Now they are beginning to outsource their customer service jobs. My brother was in their interview and was told they will be paid N30, 000 to start. I mean 30k for a job in MTN? In 2011? Ridiculous!

Please dont come here and say crap. Many of us here are very aware. I have been to South Africa several times and MTN was a small company there. Nigeria made MTN and they don't give anything back. Even their sponsorship of TV shows that was supposed to be a way to give back, is still a cash cow for them. They make so much from the text messages that are sent to these shows at such ridiculous amounts. I don't really blame them, I blame Nigerians because we are so gullible and full of inferiority complex.
PhonesRe: New MTN Tariff Plans: F&F Xpanded, Funlink Reloaded, & Super Saver by edicolove: 8:30pm On Aug 11, 2011
MTN claims to have over 40million lines/customers. I have 3 active SIM cards i dont use. Many of my friends have at least 2 SIM cards. I dont think they actually have up to 20million customers. NCC also claims over %70(about 90million people) of Nigerians have phones lines. Well guess what? I have over 8 SIM cards and same goes for a lot of guys around. Number of SIM cards sold or number of lines in use is not equivalent to number of Nigerians having phones, please.

going tru all these post amuses me because i deal in recharge card and the funniest thing is that thier card is still the one selling more than other netwrk infact if u dnt ve mtn card u dnt ve any card . so my my question is if every body here claims nt to use mtn again who are those still buying the card and thats y u c that mtn does nt give a hoot becos they are still make bigggggggggggg profit can u hear thier latest jingle thank you Nigeria and they ve thier headquarter in ghana grin
You are definitely an MTN staff because you are lying thru your teeth. My brother recently sent me an MTN N1500 card and I decided to sell it because i dont use my MTN sim no more. It took me a full day to sell it because everyone kept telling me they only use MTN to receive, not to call. Even some of the most devout MTN users around me now call with either Etisalat or Airtel or Glo. Even the guys selling recharge cards around me refused to help me and told me I should have asked my brother to send Glo or Airtel. MTN call revenues have dropped a lot but they are stil fronting. It is normal in business as they wouldnt want to look like it is affecting them, but it sure is telling on them. Most importantly, they are brewing bad blood with customers and it will tell on them in the future. They have a very bad customer service department who are taking Nigeria for granted. In Ghana, their calls are very cheap but here we are taking for a ride.

I have been laughing here reading these posts and have been sad too. Imagine the young generation (which I assume most NLs belong to) of Nigerians advocating a barbaric means of justice in 2011 and thinking they are being sensible. 2 wrongs cannot make a right. I think Egypt might self destruct. I hope they survive it.

And just to add 2 cents here. It is very easy to watch CNN or Al Jazeira and get carried away. Those news organizations don't carry balanced news. I had an argument with a friend after NATO started bombing Libya and he said they will get Gadaffi in 4 days. I told him the war might never end. It is now like 4 months and still counting. The problem with most of you is that you always run away with one opinion. Gaddafi has his issues but he was never really a bad leader to Libyans in terms of economy and administration. Libya is a very rich country and very nice place where everything works. What you are seeing in Libya are tribal and sectional revolts because some sections of the country feel marginalized. That is why they will not be able to remove Gaddafi. Except they can assassinate him. half of the country are still supporting him. the impression you get from watching the news networks is very wrong. They are only giving you a one sided story. Many people in Libya don't like Gaddafi but he is still seen as a national hero. And mind you, killing Gaddafi might just lead to a civil war.

Some of us are prepared for this fight and we dont care whose Bottom is gored. whether OBJ or IBB or Tinubu or whoever. but the whole fight must be powered by truth, not lies and falsehood. Just look at the way Al mustapha is beginning to rubbish some of those who we thought were really custodians of the truth. I have always advocated that most politicians are the same, whether ACN or PDP or CPC or whatever. But some have tried to paint some parties like ACN and CPC as saints. They are all corrupt and we should never be partisan when we fight against corruption. Lagos today is still one of the most corrupt state. We will get the details in a few years time, just watch out. But the saddest part is that the Judiciary and the Legislators are even more corrupt and to crown the whole thing, the press is the most corrupt. We have the most corrupt press in the world, belive me. Have you noticed how every newspaper is biased and serve their owners? Compass serves Gbenga Daniels, The Nation is Tinubu, The Sun is Orji Uzor Kalu,Tribune the Awos, Guardian the Ibrus and son on. Now, my once beloved Saharareporters have become the biggest junk of them all. Only maybe the vanguard and Thisday and maybe The Punch to some extent are fairly neutral. Not completely neutral though, but not loudly biased. The sad truth is that, if the people that are supposed to provide the checks and balances are as corrupt as the government of the day, then we have a real situation on our hands.

Whether the monies are commesurate with the contract is a completely different debate. It is very wrong for saharareporters to quote this as a "revelation" or "discovery" of bribery to judges. This is a complete farce and tantamount to character assasination. If they were in Nigeria, they will be prosecuted for libel. The checks shown have nothing to prove that judges were bribed. I use to be one of their biggest fan way back in 2006, 2007 when they championed a lot of good stuff. now, they are nothing but paid jobbers and propaganda machinery. I hope to see corrupt people exposed and persecuted but not this kind of propaganda stuff. 2 wrongs dont make a right. I pray a new whistle blower will emerge in Nigeria that will do a good job. Saharareporters have joined the army of yahoo yahoo Nigerians and they are at the bottom of it because they try to deceive in the name of journalism. I hope Nairaland will not go the same way.

Thanks for your response. just a few remarks. first i am not necessarily comparing Wizkid to the likes of PSquare and Tuface. I only rate him on current market play and attention. He is still an upcoming artist and has a lot to prove b4 he can really be rated. Next, yes I said he shut Iceprince down. It is normal for a hit song to come out and shut down a previous hit. it happens all over the world. Conga So shut down do me. Do me shut down Yahoozee. it is normal in the industry. that is why artists are careful when they release their album, because if you release your album at a time when another major hit is released, you might not get good attention. For your info, Iceprince has since released another single/video and it aint even scratching a thing. The guy cant rap to save his life. Brymo killed Oleku not Iceprince. He is a terrible rapper. He should go back and receive lessons from MI. He looks so confused on stage. Of course Wizkid songs are full of autotune and i hate it, but the guy has got a unique voice and stands out for now. lets see if he can hold it for long.

@henry101. how many countries have you been to,? I have been to over 8 African countries including south Africa. Please b4 you comment, you must be sure of what you are saying. In south Africa, the only Nigerian artists that have done a major profile feature on SABC and ETV are Asa and Femi. DSTV is not as big in SA as it is in Nigeria. Most of the hotels I have stayed in SA dont even have DSTV. Both in Pretoria, Joburg and Capetown. Naeto C and Shasha are almost as big as PSquare in SA largely because storm records have a good network there. Then you can also mention Dare. PSquare are more popular in East Africa and West Africa. You must also understand that the Nigerian genre is not a major Genre in these areas. SA is mostly pop and rock. kwaito is a fusion from pop. Most other southern African countries are reggae inclined. You just watch Nigerian TV stations tell you funny stuff. Ask anyone in Europe if Tuface can fill a small hall for a concert. Fally Pupa and Awilo fills large auditorium. The biggest artists from Africa are still the francophone artists. Baba Mal, Yosoune dour, Salif Keita, Omo sangare, etc. The only thing going for Nigerians is that we have large Nigerian communities in many of these countries and thats where our artists get some good patronage. Apart from that, they will not do well abroad. I have already mentioned the Nigerians artists that are really big outside. Asa closed down a whole street in france during a concert. Dr alban holds down Stadia in europe. Ayo is currently blazing in Europe and Nneka was on tour with lady gaga and Beyonce and others early this year. I am not telling you this because i love the artists, I am just giving you useful info. you can google and get more facts.

Just to add. From my travels, i found out that our biggest celebrities are our home video actors and actresses. Aki and paw paw closed down the airport in Uganda. Genevieve is very big across Africa, and many other actors too. I am saying this with a little sour taste in my mouth because i am not a fan of our home videos because i think they are crap. but i am simply telling it as it is.

First of all, you made way too many assumptions. I didnt say i hate all Nigerian music. I did list some examples of naija music i like, e.g. MI, Wizkid, Asa, Tuface, Waje, Nice, Flavour, the list is long. But i will still criticize them when they do crap. If they do well, i will praise them too. I just tell it as it is. i dont fake to make people happy. I dont know too much really like you said. I just know the normal thing. the problem is that way too many Nigerians know way below the normal thing. Anyone can just come on air and lie and there are no real statistics anywhere. That I say the album is trash is based on certain criteria. 1. They are not upcoming artists. they have a minimum standard they must attain. 2. Off course my opinion does not mean I may not listen to them once in a while but it doesn't burst my bubbles. and it doesnt mean some people will not buy the album. even the worst artists still sell CDs. But you must understand that criticisms are not meant to stop album sales. they are meant to improve the quality of the work from the artists. If you dont criticize them, they will spew crap over and over again. And please stop using the word hating. It is a crap gangsta word used in the ghettos. It is too demeaning. The word is criticizing and you should not be afraid of it except you dont trust yourself. When Tuface's "enter the place" album flopped, he was heavily criticized and his response was to go back to the studio and come out with a master piece. Only me and Implication and other tracks in that album was a brilliant way to respond to criticisms. On current rating, PSquare's Forever and Buleya are not doing well. They get good airplay because PSquare spends a lot on promotions. Alaba, Radio, TV. You notice they are doing a lot of promo for the album on sound city and others. PSquare dont normally do this. But they had to do it because the response is poor. From their last album, they havent been doing fine. The mistake the last time was to promote "Danger" first. It was a wrong move and they tried to correct it later but it already affected the album momentum. I am just giving you insider info of how the industry works. Wizkid is the rave right now and it will take a very good album to shut him down. Notice how he shut Iceprince down? PSquare are popular of course in some African countries like seria leone, kenya. But most of the shows they performed you saw on youtube, they performed as opening acts. The big Nigerian artists out there are Ayo, Nneka, Asa, Femi, Seun, Ara, before you start talking about Tuface and the rest. Only the ones I listed above hold regular concerts in europe and America. All others only perform in club shows. You can also add Ayefele to that list. Yes I said Ayefele. He did a 13 state tour in America. The highest audience PSquare had in their US tour was about 4 thousand people in New York which was great really. The other shows were flops.
