CareerRe: Advice An Unsatisfied Business Centre Worker by Egbagirl(f): 2:00pm On Oct 24, 2013
Nmeri17: I have heard you all and what i understand you're trying to say is two months is too short a period to ask for a pay rise but then, i know how much i put in my boss' pocket on a daily basis. Jus saying tho. Another thing is she harasses me before customers with reckless abandon and aside that being embarrasing it is demeaning
Now you are bringing up other issues such as harassment etc See my thing is this, it is not your company/business. There is a reason why you are not the one calling the shots because it is not your fucking business. I am sure you were aware of what your monthly salary was going to be prior to accepting the position so I do not know why you are complaining about a pay increase just after 2 months especially when you mentioned that you do not know how to do graphic designing. Also, did she promise to increase your pay after 2 months? If not then please do not complain because you knew what you were getting into before you accepted.

As per the harassment, is there any reason why she does this? Are you the only she does it to? These are questions you want to ask yourself. Is there someone you can talk to about it at work? If it is bearable, I would say endure till you have either proved your worth or you have gathered enough skills, experience and money and then look for something better.

At the end of the day, you know where the shoe pinches and we can only tell you so much. Although I would not advise you to leave, there are sometimes when you just need to let go of certain things. From what you have put forth, I would kick against it. You need to toughen up. It's a crazy world! It is not as easy as you think it is o. Whatever you do, always make sure you have a plan.

P.S: I think you need to change your outlook towards work. You will not always have a nice boss who cares about you, you might be underpaid for your services but whatever you do, be relentless and be diligent. It pays off in the end. Your attitude determines a lot.
CareerRe: Advice An Unsatisfied Business Centre Worker by Egbagirl(f): 8:20pm On Oct 23, 2013
You also mentioned something very important. You want to stay and prove to her that you can do graphic designing? Great! Do that but take it a step further by trying to do something outstanding with that skill. So you can do graphic designing but have you thought of adding value to the business with this skill? Think of something different you can do with the graphic designing skill that you want to master and think of ways to improve the business through this and ADD VALUE.

In addition, if what you are doing now can be done by any tom, dick and harry then I am afraid you might never get a salary increase. You want to be exceptional no matter what you do. If all you do is greet customers as they walk in, be exceptional at that to the extent that if you are gone for just one day, your absence will be felt. And as you do this, if you want to move up the ladder, then develop yourself and work your way up. Be proactive, diligent and disciplined. He who is faithful in little will be faithful in much. Do not despise humble beginnings because they open amazing doors of opportunity to those who desire to succeed.
CareerRe: Advice An Unsatisfied Business Centre Worker by Egbagirl(f): 8:13pm On Oct 23, 2013
whirlwind7: Let me come out blunt and straight to the point.

1: Who asks for a pay increase just 2 months on the job? I dont really see a good reason why you should expect an increase when you are just a newbie on the job.

2: You think you know the reason why your pay wasn't topped (not into designing) So, why not work on it, and satisfy yourself that you've met that criteria?

3: You love your job, and seem to have a good rapport with the customers. This, in my opinion, is a better motivation than the little pay increase you might expect

4: Quit comparing your financial status with that of your friends. It does nothing to help you.

5: Work to gain the experience, and not the pay. The experience will make you better equipped to build yourself. The marginal pay increase is just that: It's marginal, and adds little value to yuor person.

6: Dont quit the job. Prove yourself, then you can be on your way afterwards. If your boss then realises your worth, you could get a better offer

7: In today's materialistic world, money's worth has been so over-hyped. Keep a cool head, and come out smiling in the end.

One love! wink
This is what you need to hear. Firsyly, I find it hilarious that you were expecting a salary increase in just 2 months of starting with the center. Perhaps, at the end of the year, you might get a bonus but a salary increase under 6 months is highly unlikely unless you bring something exceptional to the table. Stay there and learn other skills while on the job. See this as an opportunity to learn for free. It's like you are being paid to learn because you will take the skills you acquire elsewhere to another business or yours. Don't focus on the money, focus on developing yourself and your skills. Money will come and go but your skills won't. They stay with you forever as long you are alive.

You must definitely have a goal as well. Are you just chasing money in the air or are you working towards achieving a particular goal? I guess at this point, you need to ask yourself some very crucial questions.
FamilyRe: Should A Married Woman Be A Bridesmaid? by Egbagirl(f): 1:14pm On Oct 19, 2013
Irenenoble: I think since the word 'maid' is present, married women shuld stay clear. The fact that the person would be a bride's maid makes the position unsuitable for a married woman
And there aren't married women who do housemaid duties for familieshuh So because someone is married, being a maid is taboo?
FamilyRe: Should A Married Woman Be A Bridesmaid? by Egbagirl(f): 1:12pm On Oct 19, 2013
DailyNews: To the best of my knowledge, it is very wrong for a married man to be a groom's bestman and wrong for a married woman to be a bride's bridesmaid.

Because some people do or did it doesn't make it right.

And if I am getting married, my bride dare not try to bring her married friends to be her bridesmaid or on her bridal train, NEVER! If she doesn't have any single friend or pal, then it should be vacant!

Reasons:
If he/she is having marital issues, he/she would transfer it to the newly married couple (its a myth though), but that's y single people are best choices for those two positions.

And again its main purpose is to encourage the bestman and the bridesmaid to also do same- marry, ask elderly people who have unbiased knowledge.

I can never agree to be a bestman to anyone the moment I am married myself cos its wrong, and its like thinking backward and wishing yourself single again, which is not right.

Some things are not good to practice even though it may not seem bad to us, but follow the norm to avoid any unknown or underlying repercussion.

You have passed that stage, so let it go and watch singles do their thing while u smile in reminiscence.
Whathuhhuhhuh? Pls tell me this is a joke. I honestly don't understand the logic behind your point. I think Nigerians need a lesson on the purpose of a bridesmaid or groomsman.

Oyinbo people wey teach us no teach well. This is the result.

"Apply wisdom and tact" would be what I would say. You have to analyze the sitch and the person and act accordingly. However, do not let fear rule you. Go in with confident but don't stink of it. Your ability to judge wisely will even put you in a better position for a job because you know when and when not to say something and how and how not to act.

tokunbobo: It is not wrIte and makes it so wrong to use a married person either man or woman. I have some reasons why the intending couples should not allow it but I will only share one point why married person should not accept to be a bridesmaid. It is absoluitely downgrading for a married person and can unknowingly lead to some negative situations like stagnnation or backwardness. As regards the law aspect I want to emphasize it that there is no law prohibiting it. Like other people have said its your choice but it is wrong. Regards
Excuse me, did you say downgrading?? How? Please explain as I am not sure I completely understand your point. How can it also lead to backwardness or "stagnation" (what do you mean by this anyway?)?

maryhaam: I think d whole essence of d bridemaid n train is for single to mingle...........my thinkin thou
to the best of my knowledge, I do not think so. If I am having bridesmaids just so they can mingle with other singles then they might as well sit their behinds down in the crowd and mingle all they want. After all, plenty single people full d wedding abi no be so?

From what I know, the BMs and MoH are supposed to tend to the bride on this day and even before playing support roles. They assist in some preparations, help dress the bride, and literally be there for her throughout the whole process. If I wan chop, na my bridesmaid I go ask for food. In fact, they are my errand girls for that time period. It will be duly reciprocated of course. If you know you are not ready to do that, pls find your way and sit in the crowd. They are not called "maids" for nothing. lol. Everything is done out of love anyway. So if they are married, it does not mean cannot function in that role.

Although, traditionally, BMs and MsoH were single, we all know that tradition is always evolving and is never constant.
FamilyRe: Should A Married Woman Be A Bridesmaid? by Egbagirl(f): 10:06pm On Oct 18, 2013
Are there any set in stone rules? I don't think so. My married cousin was the maid (matron) of honor at her sisters wedding. I've seen many married bridesmaids. Whatever floats your boat. It's your wedding.

An important question to ask is what is the purpose of having bridesmaids? If I want one of my really good friends to be on my train but she is married, should I exclude her? I will not. I don't see what being married has to do with being a bridesmaid.

Iceman296: Lol. Yea that's Right Sha. Some Peeps Only ask Selfish question Like the OP Stated. That's what I'm against, Job No easy o. So Its wise to Stay off anything that would make you not get the Job!
I understand what you are saying but you have to stand out and show them. You can't afford to be an ordinary candidate ESP with the crazy job market. Intelligent questions will say a lot about you and the silly ones will automatically disqualify you.
CareerRe: Questions A Job Seeker Shouldn't Ask In An Interview. by Egbagirl(f): 9:55pm On Oct 18, 2013
Iceman296: It is very proper to ask question in an interview. Asking the right questions can make or break that interview. Asking a questions such as "How can I contribute or add value to this organization?" shows the interviewer that you really want to be part of the organization and you are interested in more than just having having a job that pays you at the end of the month.
Rightly Said But It all depends on the type of question you ask

Some Questions Automatically Put You off the Job That's why its Safer not to Even ask Since the Job Scope will Be Explained to you!
You have to use sense to do it ni lol. Sometimes the interviewer might not explain the position. In this case, you not asking questions is already a fail. It shows you do not care and are not interested. Like I said one needs to ask relevant questions.
CareerRe: Questions A Job Seeker Shouldn't Ask In An Interview. by Egbagirl(f): 9:13pm On Oct 18, 2013
I don't completely agree with this post. I think it is important to ask questions about the company that of course is not found on the website. Asking about how a company implements strategies, their work ethics, etc are important. If the company's website does not provide you with all the information you need, you should definitely ask but make sure you reference that you've looked at the site. Mention what you saw and all that and ask further questions if there is something you would like to know more about. It shows that you are interested. However, if it is self-explanatory then your loss if you ask this question.

Bottomline: Ask questions to show that you are interested in what the company/organization does. After all, it is not all about them wanting you but you wanting them. If you fail to ask the right questions about who they really are, then you won't have enough information to decide whether or not you want to work with them. Show that you've done your research and if the info you found was not sufficient, ask away!

Secondly, depending on the situation and the interviewer, it may not always be a bad thing to ask about a personal background. You want to make the process as relaxing as possible. Get to know your interviewer. Ask relevant questions not stuff like "your spouse's birthday etc". Ask relevant questions pertaining to the job and company. Establishing a relationship is key. They will remember you. If you don't get that position, the interviewer might forward your resume to another org/company because he or she likes you and they know a bit about you. Establish a connection with them. (I guess it also depends on the interviewer and if he or she is interested lol but it's worth a try)

Iceman296: ..I don't Think It's Even Proper to Ask Questions At all During Interview.

Before The interview, The Sage thing to do is to Run a Background Check on the Company, And Know all Your Concerns towards the Job.

Asking Questions Might Put you off and You all Know how Competitive the Job Market is.

Other Questions Should be Asked Maybe After you get the Job.

IMHO
It is very proper to ask question in an interview. Asking the right questions can make or break that interview. Asking a questions such as "How can I contribute or add value to this organization?" shows the interviewer that you really want to be part of the organization and you are interested in more than just having having a job that pays you at the end of the month.
HealthRe: 10 Surprising Things You May Be Addicted To by Egbagirl(f): 2:20pm On Oct 10, 2013
People always said that tats and piercings are addictive but I did not believe them until now... It's really sad. You get one extra piercing and you start thinking of where to get the next one. Of course, with discipline, there is a limit to how many piercings one gets but anyway, piercings can be very addictive. For those who care about their image and don't want too much on their faces etc, you can always pierce parts of your body that are always hidden (your belly etc). Same goes for tats. This is always the best route to take IMO anyway.

Rings and toe rings can also be addictive!

I guess there are many ways to do it but the one I'm familiar with is this:

Boil the yam, and when semi-cooked, add your palm oil, blended peppers, spices, crayfish and let it cook. When it's almost done you can add your extras like fish/meat, spinach etc.

Don't add too much water from the beginning if you don't want it too watery.
Nairaland GeneralRe: Nigerian Presenters And The 'fake' American Accents? by Egbagirl(f): 2:48am On Sep 17, 2013
delors: Yeah. But then, when i hear some people pronounce 'cause', it sounds more like 'cos' meanwhile the 's' should sound 'z'. So, I just feel sometimes, it is when you are trying to pronounce some words correctly, thats when some people kinda think oon is forming it.
One annoying trend is the 'think' or 'thank' word. Most Nigerians pronounce it as 'tink' or 'tank' (omitting the 'h') while the wannabes pronounce it 'fink' or 'fenk. Lol...Crap! Although it sounds more like 'fink', it actually isnt. The 'th' must be pronounced the right way, not 'f'. Its all funny
In fact d tin tire me. I think it's more than our accents though. It's a mentality that anything foreign is better. Wanna be americanas, fashionistas, artists etc. The accent is only a part of it.

Another thing is we like to make certain things appear "Behind". E.g think vs fink. Those who say "fink" think it's cool and in reality it's not. About 7years ago, I was guilty of this not because I didn't know better but because eveyone else was saying it.
Nairaland GeneralRe: Nigerian Presenters And The 'fake' American Accents? by Egbagirl(f): 10:54pm On Sep 16, 2013
delors: Its not an accent, most of the time, it is diction. Nigerians dont pronounce words well. Yep. Even English teachers do not, I repeat, DO NOT, pronounce words well.
I give you guys, even the OP herself this challenge, sit down in your room, lock your door, cut off the noise, pronounce these words and record it:

1. Cause - Course - Curse
2. Faith - Fate
3. Hear - Here - Hair
4. Pear - pair
5. Son - sun
6. Three - tree

And so on. Then, you'd realize you don't even know how to pronounce these words correctly. if it is possible, upload the sounds, let us hear you.
I see what you are getting at but the problem is the "overdoing" and "over sabi". For example, instead of pronouncing "cause" the way it should be, those trying too hard will add an "r" to become "caurse". That's where the problem is. It's not by force to speak in an accent that isn't natural. Even those that have lived abroad for long still mess up they'd their pronunciation sometimes not to talk of those who do "wanna be".

This is truly disgusting! Its appalling that same people who cant do anything when the political leaders are stealing the country blind can go at any length to have their fellow ladder-trying-to-climb citizens sacked! Its truly a curse to remain at the ladder bottom with some peeps

What has happened to forgiveness as recommended by our saviour?

Sacked staff! its all your fault! if not, you should have stolen from the bank and climbed far beyond the bottom of the ladder, if that was the case, there is no way this your fellow bottom laddered friends, sorry enemies would have got you sacked.

*****And they develop cold feet when politicians are involved*****
I am not familiar with the story but form what the OP wrote, it seems the customer only came to Nairaland to vent their frustration and not demand that the staff be sacked. It is rather unfortunate that it got to the attention of management. I don't think the customer is to blame for expressing their opinion on something of that nature. It's the same as giving reviews about a product/service (which I think many people find useful).

Now as per the punishment, maybe management should have suspended him/her or whatever but in no way should a customer be blamed for the shortcomings of an employee. It's all about the customer in the business world. Without them, you have no business. Gotta stay on top of your game. It's about time people took customer service in Nigeria seriously!
Nairaland GeneralRe: Nigerian Presenters And The 'fake' American Accents? by Egbagirl(f): 3:20pm On Sep 16, 2013

SilaV: It depends on the perspective with which an individual wants to view the equation. For instance,if we were to look at it from mathematics angle, then the following conditions would apply:
(1) The number bases you are working with.If it were to be base ten, then the answer would be 2.However,if it were to be base two,the answer would be "10"(pronounced one-zero)
(2)The operation the cross symbol represents. That is,the concept of binary operation would be looked at.In binary operation, the cross or plus sign is not regarded as the "normal addition" operator.Any sign that comes in-between two numbers in binary operation is often expressed as "opertion".For example, 1+1 is read as "one operation one".Of course, in binary operation if the plus sign actually means addition, then one of the rule would apply;1+1= 1.
Again, if the equation is to be looked at from social perspective, then the institution of marriage would come to mind.In marriage: 1+1=1
Just my contribution.
The question is: Negative 1 plus positive 1

Not

Positive 1 plus positive 1

Foreign AffairsRussia Claims Chemical Weapons Were Used By Rebels And Not Syrian Government by Egbagirl(op): 4:19pm On Sep 05, 2013
Probes from Khan al-Assal show chemicals used in the March 19 attack did not belong to standard Syrian army ammunition, and that the shell carrying the substance was similar to those made by a rebel fighter group, the Russian Foreign Ministry stated.

A statement released by the ministry on Wednesday particularly drew attention to the “massive stove-piping of various information aimed at placing the responsibility for the alleged chemical weapons use in Syria on Damascus, even though the results of the UN investigation have not yet been revealed.”

By such means “the way is being paved for military action” against Damascus, the ministry pointed out.

But the samples taken at the site of the March 19 attack and analyzed by Russian experts indicate that a projectile carrying the deadly nerve agent sarin was most likely fired at Khan al-Assal by the rebels, the ministry statement suggests, outlining the 100-page report handed over to the UN by Russia.

The key points of the report have been given as follows:

• the shell used in the incident “does not belong to the standard ammunition of the Syrian army and was crudely according to type and parameters of the rocket-propelled unguided missiles manufactured in the north of Syria by the so-called Bashair al-Nasr brigade”;

• RDX, which is also known as hexogen or cyclonite, was used as the bursting charge for the shell, and it is “not used in standard chemical munitions”;

• soil and shell samples contain “the non-industrially synthesized nerve agent sarin and diisopropylfluorophosphate,” which was “used by Western states for producing chemical weapons during World War II.”

The findings of the report are “extremely specific,” as they mostly consist of scientific and technical data from probes’ analysis, the ministry stressed, adding that this data can “substantially aid” the UN investigation of the incident.

While focusing on the Khan al-Assal attack on March 19, in which at least 26 civilians and Syrian army soldiers were killed, and 86 more were injured, the Russian Foreign Ministry also criticized the “flawed selective approach” of certain states in reporting the recent incidents of alleged chemical weapons use in August.

The hype around the alleged attack on the eastern Damascus suburb of Ghouta showed “apparent attempts to cast a veil over the incidents of gas poisoning of Syrian army soldiers on August 22, 24 and 25,” the ministry said, adding that all the respective evidence was handed to the UN by Syria.

The condition of the soldiers who, according to Damascus, suffered poisoning after discovering tanks with traces of sarin, has been examined and documented by the UN inspectors, the ministry pointed out, adding that “any objective investigation of the August 21 incident in eastern Ghouta is impossible without the consideration of all these facts.”

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Tuesday said the UN investigators are set to return to Syria to investigate several other cases of alleged chemical weapons use, including the March 19 incident in Khan al-Assal.
