smoosh15: The devil is a liar
Which devilhuh
Why blame the devil for our inefficiencies?
Accidents are not a one time event, they are more due to a sequence of errors!
The way we Nigerians are always keen to shift "any and every" blame to the devil, I think the dude must be damn mad with us!! grin Possibly shouting those guys are bloody liars grin grin

On a serious note, after critically analysing the aviation sector in Naija in the light of corruption, sharp practices, and lack lustre attitude to duties, I had placed on myself a personal moratorium for 4 years running now on flying in Naija or on local airlines. Unfortunately, I still have family and friends that do not share my convictions or fears.

Imagine over three accidents I have not seen or heard of the accident report. Imagine the Dana crash and nasty things regarding the payment of compensation to relations of victims. I was pissed when I read of double speak on payment terms ( as par per family or per accident victim)!

Let no one say am not patriotic, I am just being realistic, and not interested in being a victim or blaming any devil.
The truth is that most if not all of these occurrences can be prevented and/or avoided, but are symptoms of the level of rot in our national structures, physche and sectors (educational, public, health etc.). The observed high manifestation of these symptoms in the aviation sector is due to the fact that this sector is designed for close tolerances and very allergic to very slight abuses in systems and processes.
Foreign AffairsGambia Pulls Out Of British Commonwealth by Excellent7(op): 12:37pm On Oct 03, 2013
BANJUL (AFP) – The Gambian government announced Wednesday that the former British colony is pulling out of the Commonwealth with immediate effect, saying it would “never be a member of any neo-colonial institution”.

“The general public is hereby informed that the government of the Gambia has left the Commonwealth of Nations with immediate effect,” it said in a statement.

“(The) government has withdrawn its membership of the British Commonwealth and decided that the Gambia will never be a member of any neo-colonial institution and will never be a party to any institution that represents an extension of colonialism.”

The Commonwealth bloc is a voluntary association of more than 50 countries, many of them former territories of the British empire.

No further details were given but a foreign ministry official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told AFP that the decision came after the government rejected a proposal by the Commonwealth last year to create commissions in Banjul to protect human rights, media rights and fight against corruption.

The proposal followed an April 2012 visit to the Gambia by Commonwealth Secretary General Kamalesh Sharma, during which he met with President Yahya Jammeh and other top government officials.

Jammeh, who is regularly accused of rights abuses, has ruled mainland Africa’s smallest country with an aura of mysticism and an iron fist since seizing power in 1994.

Earlier this year, the Gambia was singled out for its poor rights record in Britain’s annual Human Rights and Democracy report, which cited cases of unlawful detentions, illegal closures of newspapers and radio stations and discrimination against minority groups.

A spokesman at the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office said early Thursday: “We would very much regret Gambia, or any other country, deciding to leave the Commonwealth.”

He noted however that “decisions on Commonwealth membership are a matter for each member government”.

The Gambia is a tiny sliver of land wedged into Senegal. It suffers from widespread poverty but its miles of palm-fringed beaches are a favourite among sun-seeking European tourists

The west African anglophone nation, the smallest on the mainland, has long been dogged by rights concerns under Jammeh’s administration.

Jammeh, who seized power in a 1994 coup, brooks no criticism. He has been re-elected to power three times.

The man who claims he can cure AIDS and other illnesses is often pilloried for rights abuses and the muzzling of journalists.

In 2010, the EU, the country’s top aid donor, cancelled 22 million euros ($30 million) in budget support for Banjul because of concerns over human rights and governance.

In August 2012, Jammeh came under attack from Amnesty International and others for sending nine prisoners to the firing squad and promising many more would go the same way.

Many top officials have found themselves charged with treason, often related to coup plots which observers have said are a sign of paranoia by Jammeh, who has woven an aura of mysticism around himself, dressing in billowing white robes and always clutching his Koran.

Last year he warned foreign diplomats that his country would not be “bribed” with aid to accept homosexuality.

“If you are to give us aid for men and men or for women and women to marry, leave it. We don’t need your aid because as far as I am the president of the Gambia, you will never see that happen in this country,” he said.

In January this year Jammeh accused the European Union of trying to destablise Gambia, after the EU set out a 17-point checklist of demands for reforms.

They included calls for Gambia to abolish the death penalty and to re-open newspapers and radio stations closed down by the authorities.

The president regularly insists that he will not bow to external pressures for reform.

Politics2015:jonathan Has Edge Over The North – Sulaimon (northern Emancipation Network) by Excellent7(op): 12:45pm On Sep 15, 2013
Source: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/09/2015-jonathan-has-edge-over-the-north-sulaimon/
on September 15, 2013

By Emma Ujah, Abuja Bureau Chief

In this interview, the Coordinator of the Northern Emancipation Network, Mal. Abdul-Azeez Sulaiman, says that the ordinary people in the North can no longer follow the political elite blindly. He also warns that the North could suffer after 2015 if it continues to antagonize President Goodluck Jonathan as it is not in a position to win the presidency in the next general elections.

How do you assess the political atmosphere in the country right now?

I think the atmosphere is dicey but interesting, because, about two years to the elections, the battle has already started. It makes the atmosphere very exciting at least to those who are political- minded.

We have seen the excitement that came with the registration of the APC, how a merger was achieved for the first time in Nigeria’s political history. I do not think there has ever been a complete merger, although we have had some alliances.

People were surprised when the PDM was registered. It should not have been a surprise; it was an expected move from former Vice President Alhaji Atiku Abubakar. What happened at the PDP convention, we all know, is a build up to 2015; so I can say the atmosphere is exciting.
PRESIDENT Goodluck Jonathan has initiated talks with Atiku Abubakar

PRESIDENT Goodluck Jonathan has initiated talks with Atiku Abubakar

Would you not consider the battle for 2015 as a distraction to government both at the federal and state levels? It is like we are going to waste two years politicking, rather than allowing those in government to concentrate on developmental issues.

The issue of government, to my understanding and the experience I have, is that only those who are in government are concerned with government. People outside are only concerned with how to remove that government and replace it; so as far as this gang of emerging opposition is concerned, it is not a distraction. It is left for government to focus on what is before it. For the opposition, the government should not even work. So it cannot be said to be a distraction, opposition is allowed everywhere.

Some people have raised issues about the quality of the membership of APC which we all know is a merger of the ACN, ANPP and CPC. Some people say what happened in 2011 where the alliance between CPC and ACN did not produce the desired result of fielding a successful candidate, especially at the federal level, will repeat itself. Do you see the APC as an alternative platform to the PDP?

When we talk of the APC, I would rather separate two issues, whether the merger is even going to work is one thing, producing a government that is better than the PDP is another .

About the merger, we all know how it started as an alliance in 2011 but failed practically and theoretically. And the move continued to produce the merger that is now the APC. If you look at the partners, you will discover that the marriage may not last.

When we look at the composition of the ANPP, the same people that could not contain former Head of State, General Muhammadu Buhari, in 2007 and 2011, he (Buhari) had to leave to form the CPC. So, at what point are they telling us that they have reconciled their differences. And Buhari’s differences with the ANPP were fundamental.

Now, if you look at the A CN, we all know that it has an articulate political agenda, and the Yoruba may be more politically conscious to a point where the Yoruba voter may be redirected to vote the APC. But in the North, the problem is that they might not have the consciousness to adopt the APC as a common platform.

Why do you say so?

That is what is happening now. You can see that with the coming of the APC, the Yoruba people said they do not need the presidency. When the APC held a meeting in the South-west, the Yoruba clearly said they do not need the presidency.

So, the general feeling is that Buhari may pick the APC presidential ticket and we all know that Atiku would never jettison his personal ambition for anybody; he will definitely contest that election (2015).

So, you can see already the North is divided. And, before the end of the year, we are going to have another platform where some of the breakaway governors could contest because they are not actually going ahead with Atiku. All the northern governors that walked out of the PDP National Convention with Atiku are not his bed fellows.

If you look at their antecedents, all of them are Obasanjo boys. They have never had anything in common with Atiku. But Atiku will eventually leave the PDP because of his personal ambition. He knows that it is going to be almost impossible for him to pick the PDP ticket and he must contest. And he cannot join the APC; so he got his associates to register the PDM which has, all along, been the political organisation which he inherited from General Yar’Adua.

Now, instead of him to just move out, to his PDM, he has to cause commotion. The mainstream PDP would be looking at the crack in the party but that is not the end of it. Whatever the reconciliation effort may be, Atiku is not going back. He will eventually end up in PDM, where he will contest the presidential election.

Could give us an insight into the game plan of the politicians in the North who are against the present government that led to all of these?

What we have today is a conscious North and the northern political elite. Before now, wherever the elite went, the crowd followed them. But, now, it is no longer the same. People have started thinking that they should not allow the elite take them wherever they go.

By the virtue of my position as a journalist and Coordinator of the Northern Emancipation Network, I have had the opportunity of meeting some of these northern elite to discuss.

Most of us in the Northern Emancipation Network and our affiliates do not see the necessity of the North insisting on the presidency in 2015 or any time in the near future. Our reason is that if holding central power is the key to the success of a people, then the North ought to have been the most successful region in Nigeria. If that yardstick is true, the Igbo ought to have been the most backward because they have not in practical terms had power at the centre.

The North held power for the most part of Nigeria’s existence as an independent nation yet we are the most backward.

The Igbo that have not held power is by far the most advanced technogically and economically.

Why? It is either power at the centre is not enough to develop a people or the northern political elite misused it

Some of them who told the nation that our public infrastructure cannot work even if the entire public funds were invested in them are the same people now telling us that they can make the facilities work under privatization. These is the type of people we had as leaders from the North and they are the same people who are transforming either through their children or their wives or brothers.

Some northerners of your class sound very bitter about Nigeria than people of Igbo extraction because, just as you said, the region held power for a long time and the power was meant for the holders alone.

The motive is personal. It has nothing to do with the larger North. The northern political elite believe the region is their personal asset. They started this rotation thing when they made Obasanjo president. Because it has not been the entire North handling the region’s political situation, it reclaimed power in 2007 under Yar’Adua.

The North had the opportunity to place itself appropriately to reclaim power after President Jonathan if it had played the right card but it played the wrong card when Yar’Adua was sick. None of these elders came out to do the right thing by asking Jonathan, who was then Yar’Adua’s deputy, to take over. Instead, they fought this man until God took power and handed it to him.

The elite did that claiming they were doing it for the North. Some of us were talking then but our voice was not loud.

The impression you are creating is that the crisis we are witnessing especially in the North was precipitated by the elite.

What crisis? We have political and security challenges.

By your reckoning, has it anything to do with the struggle for power come 2015?

It may not have been directly incited by the northern elite but it must have been caused by their actions or inaction. For instance, in Yobe and Borno states where the insurgency started, you have situations where by some people were governors and, after their tenure, they moved on to the Senate and their wives into the House of Reps or were given other government appointments as if they were the only families in their states.

Go round the North and see the type of schools our children attend. Today we have a generation that is no longer prepared to be slaves to the northern elite.

Six years ago, if someone tells you that a northerner will pick up a gun go to a mosque or church to kill people, you may not believe. But now it is happening; the elite created it either knowingly or unknowingly.

The Emir of Kano wept in the public three times because of the activities of these boys. The Emir of Zauzzau is protected by military men in his palace.

What is your group all about?

The agenda is to enlighten the northern population that it is time to tell the elite that what they have taken is enough. We are no longer prepared to be slaves. They have enslaved our grandparents, parents and we are not going to allow them to enslave us and their children enslave our children. As it has been for generations, they are now, seeing a different northern picture.

It is no longer business as usual where you just come out and say we are northerners.

Are you saying that those who claim to be the northern leaders are not representing you?

Categorically we have said it. Maybe they are older than we are; so they call themselves elders. They could be older but they are not statesmen. It is the same people that have brought division in the north.

We have spoken to people who told us about how the late Sir Ahmadu Bello ran the region. He did not bring about division. Every northerner, no matter tribe or religion, was a northerner. He introduced the northernersation policy.

How has the Jonathan presidency benefited the North?

There is no region that has been favoured as far as federal appointments are concerned than the North. For instance, the Vice President, Senate President, Speaker, INEC chairman, NSA, Inspector General of Police, Comptroller of Customs, many ministers are northerners. Even President Jonathan’s region of Niger Delta does not have that.

Our agenda is that we should not allow these people to endanger the northern political future for their personal reasons because it will be disastrous if we allow the North to play the enemy in 2015 and loses as it happened in 2011.

Now, the calculation is that we cannot get it in 2015. The northern Muslims votes will be split between Atiku and Buhari and we are likely to have Lamido, while the northern Christians vote will go to Jonathan who also enjoys bulk vote from other regions.

It is clear that if the North goes for the presidency in 2015, it will not get it, so why not be friends with the person who is likely to win so that the North is not endangered. If we play this bad card again and lose in 2015, in 2019, the region will not have a voice again in this country just like northern Cameroon which used to hold power.

I feel the same way as the OP
We should be careful about the signals we send by our actions especially in issues like this involving impressionable young people.
Is the action the little boy took commendable? Answer is No!
Is it worthy of emulation? Answer is No!!
Will it be good if other young kids do same? Answer is No!!!
To me it seems bad behaviour is being rewarded instead of being reprimanded. I am a bit confused with this scenario as I was taught to reward good behaviour and punish bad behaviour.
In saner climes a lot of people will be in deep trouble for this act of truancy and dereliction of duty, even the guys parent or guardians.
TravelRe: Ethiopian Airline Starts Operation In Enugu by Excellent7(m): 12:30pm On Aug 18, 2013
I disagree with those against the establishment of more international airports. With a not so good internal road network, there is need for more international airports to open up the country. it feels bad to fly for 8-10 hours and then move by road for from 6-12 hours for those that for personal concerns take exception to flying local within the country.
With our expansive land mass and projected growth prospects in the next 10 years, I think strategic increase of our international airport to 10 can be economically sustainable.
If we are serious in playing in the global agri-products trade, internationalization of Enugu airport can help in evacuation of agricultural products from the Gombe axis to the international market. The potential foriegn exchange receipt from this and the improvement on the farmers income can only be imagined. You need to research on how much a country like Kenya makes from selling flowers or South Africa from exporting oranges etc. to Europe.
Why can't our fresh oranges, tomatoes, etc be standardized and sold international?

Direct the energy to your books and make a success of yourself. Keep away from that girl. You are lucky your eyes were "open" enough to see the reality.
I know of a guy that was in this kind of scenario, made excuses for the babe misdeeds, ended up marrying the babe, and the babe still bleeps around, nobody tells the guy (may be blissful ignorance), and people wonder if the guy is impotent. I support your quitting the relationship.

@amascatel
You don't seem to understand the extent of decay in the tertiary education system.
I bet you that if the government advertises for university teaching positions for foreign academics to teach in our schools even with 50% mark up on current wages and allowances, very few non-nigerian academicians will apply (if any) in the SETs (Science, Engineering and Technology area). This is because at a point in your career wages alone stop being a significant motivating factor. Enhanced wages without the tools and critical mass to be at the fore front in your area of specialization are critical to most disciplined and highly qualified academics.
Check out the many adverts on the papers for middle and top level academics, few people are available to take the offer. Go around our universities, you will find may be less than 0.5% foreign lecturers (mostly due to marriage to Nigerian partners) unlike in the 80's and 90's when our schools could be regarded as international in terms of staffing and students (these are part of the criteria employed in ranking universities).
For instance a Phd degree in say Engineering for a Masters degree holder takes a minimum of 3 years and costs with living costs about 24,000 GBP per annum (conservative estimated living cost included) X 3 years = 72,000 GBP @ GBP:NGN approximately 265NGN to 1 GBP this costs 19,080,000.00 NGN (approx. 20 million NGN. Imagine spending 20 mil on the last and terminal stage of your education and being offered circa 2- 2.5 mil per annum teaching position without infrastructure at home (where you will expire intellectually after 3 years and take 8-10 years to earn back your doctoral expenses!! Compare this with your host country in appreciation of your newly acquired skills give you leave to stay and high possibility of working in the state of the art niche in your field with possibility of earning your doctoral expenses in 2-4 years or less.
The government has partly realized this and have commenced scholarship for which I commend them especially through the TETFUND scholarships etc. However a lot more needs to be done in terms of infrastructure. In my own opinion our universities should not be offering Masters & PhDs in Engineering, physical, and biological sciences ( the infrastructure is just not there).
The government needs to sit down with the stakeholders once and for all and solve this problem. The government should not just throw money at the problem. They should invest money and follow the money to ensure value for money spent. University administration and management like every sphere of our system is corrupt and wasteful. This needs to be looked into too. Government needs to work with ASUU to restore glory to our universities.
It will be refresshing to see highly cited papers emanating from nigerian universities and nigerian universities with great international diversity in academic staffing and student population (greater than 20%), not the "tribal conclaves" our schools are gradually becoming.

I think the guy has made his position clear. You have to consider it or check out. From what I have observed a prenup does not indicate the presence or absence of love.Let us keep sentiments aside. With the way western influences have made "marriage" a walk through a lion infested forest for the men, I expect this to become common with guys that do not want to be sorry. I think its a kind of insurance that the guy does not lose everything if he loses his marriage. If you read the news you will see many babes going for the man's jugular (in terms of assets) when shit hits the fan.
The current marriage laws in the west sets up the man to be "robbed" when the marriage and "love" goes down. You need to make contact with guys that were ruined by this to appreciate.

"I like Buhari as a person but i sincerely feel he is pushing this ambition of becoming the President too far. Am beginning to think that Buhari has the notion that he is the only Nigerian that has what it takes to save the country from the present situation which is not true. Its true that GEJ is not all we expect of a Nigerian President yet its unfair to say that he has failed.... For the sake of Nigeria why not all the former presidents/heads of state drop their personal issues and rally around GEJ with their wealth of experiences and make succeed instead of distracting for their personal gains?

The problem of Nigeria is not just GEJ or any individual but institutional intricacies and complications and to solve such fundamental mental problems the president needs the support of every Nigerian especially the 'big guns'. Buhari or any other person would still not do much as the president under the same situation, Buhari may be a strong leader but we must not forget that ruling as a military dictator is not the same as presiding over a democratic state and within the tenet of the constitution. what Africa (Nigeria) need is not a strong leader ( like Buhari, OBJ, IBB, etc) but a strong and working institution and system...."

@ danny301
I have come to agree with the higlighted line in your statement concerning the subject.
Coincidentally that was the same thing his colleagues (IBB & Co)accused him of (....arrogating to themselves absolute knowledge of the solution to the nation's problem) when the overthrew his ass two decades ago. It's unfortunate that a good number of commentators seem not to have a good grasp of what it means to advance in science and technology, do not have a scientific background, irredeemably to patriotic to accept reality, and/or mad with the source or Nigerians in diaspora.
I wish to thank Tony spike and other who have shed enlightened views.
As much as I crave to hear encouraging news in this aspect about 9ja, I can not agree less with the list (with respect to Nigeria). Scientifically, we have been on the downward trend since the 80's and mid 90's when the most enterprising brains were forced to leave the tertiary institutions. You can not give what you do not have. In my own opinion with the state of things anyone serious in science and engineering should aspire for some international input after at most a 1st degree!!! To put it clearly, I do not think that our tertiary institutions are equipped with the appropriate manpower and tools for resourceful science and engineering education in the 21st century.
If you disagree with me go to sciencedirect or ISI web of knowledge and goggle the names of faculty members in any naija school you know, if you get any hits, check the dates of these highly ranked publications, most were done over 20 years ago, most probably around the time the finished their doctorates. I am not blaming anybody but this is the situation. For those in the know, there are metrics for measuring scientific output and quality and we are so far behind at the moment.
For the guy that mentioned that we have 3 nuclear reactors; this is news to me and I am desirous of more info on that. To the best of my knowledge we do not have any, as the funds released by Obasanjo's government in the late seventies developed "complications". If you have ever had access to a small nuclear facility you will be in a position to appreciate the discipline and containments needed in the design.
Lastly about the mentioned "pessimism" of diaspora Nigerians, I understand them. You can not compare one thing or one experience. I believe having experienced it both ways and seeing the wasted time and lack of planned and deliberate action to reverse the trend there are little grounds for much optimism.
Lastly, there is no doubt that Nigerians are very smart people individually, but we need re-education and re-orientation, a critical mass of manpower and tools backed by a clear cut national policy, and within a decade a change can be possible in this regard.

@free13 You can now see its not only in naija. Infact the Australians are just catching up. In these area naija is "well developed" and the Aussies "developing".
To those that think its a joke, it wasn't. I watched it live on a news channel!

Man up and run away from the babe, stop wasting your time !!!
FamilyRe: Should He Fight For Custody Of His Kids?? by Excellent7(m): 10:29pm On Jan 12, 2013
OP, don't bother yourself anymore!
From your narrations, I see the man as a very wise dude!
He has retired to the siddon look approach, which your cousin did not expect.
She had crafted to draw the dude out for a fight, to date the guy has avoided the bait.
I commend him. If I know kids well enough, your cousin will be the one searching for their DAD when those kids start yearning, singing and crying for their Dad.
I see her encircled in the frustration and dejection she expected for the guy !!!
