smoosh15: The devil is a liarWhich devil ![]() Why blame the devil for our inefficiencies? Accidents are not a one time event, they are more due to a sequence of errors! The way we Nigerians are always keen to shift "any and every" blame to the devil, I think the dude must be damn mad with us!! Possibly shouting those guys are bloody liars ![]() On a serious note, after critically analysing the aviation sector in Naija in the light of corruption, sharp practices, and lack lustre attitude to duties, I had placed on myself a personal moratorium for 4 years running now on flying in Naija or on local airlines. Unfortunately, I still have family and friends that do not share my convictions or fears. Imagine over three accidents I have not seen or heard of the accident report. Imagine the Dana crash and nasty things regarding the payment of compensation to relations of victims. I was pissed when I read of double speak on payment terms ( as par per family or per accident victim)! Let no one say am not patriotic, I am just being realistic, and not interested in being a victim or blaming any devil. The truth is that most if not all of these occurrences can be prevented and/or avoided, but are symptoms of the level of rot in our national structures, physche and sectors (educational, public, health etc.). The observed high manifestation of these symptoms in the aviation sector is due to the fact that this sector is designed for close tolerances and very allergic to very slight abuses in systems and processes. |
BANJUL (AFP) – The Gambian government announced Wednesday that the former British colony is pulling out of the Commonwealth with immediate effect, saying it would “never be a member of any neo-colonial institution”. “The general public is hereby informed that the government of the Gambia has left the Commonwealth of Nations with immediate effect,” it said in a statement. “(The) government has withdrawn its membership of the British Commonwealth and decided that the Gambia will never be a member of any neo-colonial institution and will never be a party to any institution that represents an extension of colonialism.” The Commonwealth bloc is a voluntary association of more than 50 countries, many of them former territories of the British empire. No further details were given but a foreign ministry official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told AFP that the decision came after the government rejected a proposal by the Commonwealth last year to create commissions in Banjul to protect human rights, media rights and fight against corruption. The proposal followed an April 2012 visit to the Gambia by Commonwealth Secretary General Kamalesh Sharma, during which he met with President Yahya Jammeh and other top government officials. Jammeh, who is regularly accused of rights abuses, has ruled mainland Africa’s smallest country with an aura of mysticism and an iron fist since seizing power in 1994. Earlier this year, the Gambia was singled out for its poor rights record in Britain’s annual Human Rights and Democracy report, which cited cases of unlawful detentions, illegal closures of newspapers and radio stations and discrimination against minority groups. A spokesman at the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office said early Thursday: “We would very much regret Gambia, or any other country, deciding to leave the Commonwealth.” He noted however that “decisions on Commonwealth membership are a matter for each member government”. The Gambia is a tiny sliver of land wedged into Senegal. It suffers from widespread poverty but its miles of palm-fringed beaches are a favourite among sun-seeking European tourists The west African anglophone nation, the smallest on the mainland, has long been dogged by rights concerns under Jammeh’s administration. Jammeh, who seized power in a 1994 coup, brooks no criticism. He has been re-elected to power three times. The man who claims he can cure AIDS and other illnesses is often pilloried for rights abuses and the muzzling of journalists. In 2010, the EU, the country’s top aid donor, cancelled 22 million euros ($30 million) in budget support for Banjul because of concerns over human rights and governance. In August 2012, Jammeh came under attack from Amnesty International and others for sending nine prisoners to the firing squad and promising many more would go the same way. Many top officials have found themselves charged with treason, often related to coup plots which observers have said are a sign of paranoia by Jammeh, who has woven an aura of mysticism around himself, dressing in billowing white robes and always clutching his Koran. Last year he warned foreign diplomats that his country would not be “bribed” with aid to accept homosexuality. “If you are to give us aid for men and men or for women and women to marry, leave it. We don’t need your aid because as far as I am the president of the Gambia, you will never see that happen in this country,” he said. In January this year Jammeh accused the European Union of trying to destablise Gambia, after the EU set out a 17-point checklist of demands for reforms. They included calls for Gambia to abolish the death penalty and to re-open newspapers and radio stations closed down by the authorities. The president regularly insists that he will not bow to external pressures for reform. - See more at: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/10/gambia-pulls-british-commonwealth/#sthash.mooFTkbG.dpuf[/ |
I am not surprised at this news. What you reward you get more of. I remember the topic in which a nairalander expressed his opinion regarding the "rewarding" of the first boy. https://www.nairaland.com/1419504/it-wrong-arik-airline-stowaway#17799870 Na which child wey no wan scholarship in better school, body guards and "good food" In fact the airport police had better get ready, their job specs had been enhanced ![]() |
Source: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/09/2015-jonathan-has-edge-over-the-north-sulaimon/To me, this was an insightful interview! |
I feel the same way as the OP We should be careful about the signals we send by our actions especially in issues like this involving impressionable young people. Is the action the little boy took commendable? Answer is No! Is it worthy of emulation? Answer is No!! Will it be good if other young kids do same? Answer is No!!! To me it seems bad behaviour is being rewarded instead of being reprimanded. I am a bit confused with this scenario as I was taught to reward good behaviour and punish bad behaviour. In saner climes a lot of people will be in deep trouble for this act of truancy and dereliction of duty, even the guys parent or guardians. |
I disagree with those against the establishment of more international airports. With a not so good internal road network, there is need for more international airports to open up the country. it feels bad to fly for 8-10 hours and then move by road for from 6-12 hours for those that for personal concerns take exception to flying local within the country. With our expansive land mass and projected growth prospects in the next 10 years, I think strategic increase of our international airport to 10 can be economically sustainable. If we are serious in playing in the global agri-products trade, internationalization of Enugu airport can help in evacuation of agricultural products from the Gombe axis to the international market. The potential foriegn exchange receipt from this and the improvement on the farmers income can only be imagined. You need to research on how much a country like Kenya makes from selling flowers or South Africa from exporting oranges etc. to Europe. Why can't our fresh oranges, tomatoes, etc be standardized and sold international? |
Boy you are a lucky dude. I got some little advice for you. Between the two of us we know that babe is not going to change. Beauty without character and integrity is nothing. Direct the energy to your books and make a success of yourself. Keep away from that girl. You are lucky your eyes were "open" enough to see the reality. I know of a guy that was in this kind of scenario, made excuses for the babe misdeeds, ended up marrying the babe, and the babe still bleeps around, nobody tells the guy (may be blissful ignorance), and people wonder if the guy is impotent. I support your quitting the relationship. |
If this is real, that's one bad nigga! @OP better be extra careful with this extra virile and sharp shooting boss!! lol!!! |
Guy, you are sitting on a very long thing! Run away while you can. You can never be able to prove it, while the babe gets richer! D babe wetin she don do to prove she "love" u? Wake up!! |
Any young guy taking the "crap" some babes are saying that money does not affect their attitude is sitting on a very long thing. I do not have any doubt that the "men" in the house know how far! Do not say I did not warn you oh. On nairaland it's money does not move me, it does not change my attitude. I hear! In reality in a lot of cases, the position I have observed is: my money! my money!!. My husband's money is our money, my money is my own!!! I am in expectation of some firecrackers coming my way. Let it come. The truth is oftentimes bitter. |
Chai!! This news just dey pain me!!! I really wanted them to try that bond shit and be demystified by the after effects as travellers switch to less "stressful" climes. The opposition party in parliament to me have saved the government from shooting itself in the leg. |
Not for me! Even if it 200 NGN, once inside naija no more flying all journey na by road!!! That has been my resolve since 3 years |
amacastel: Well well this is absurd but the truth is this ASUU are the same with the govt the funds that are been given to them earlier wot have they been doing with it nothing I never know that govt give them dime b4 yet they sale hand out ,sort out, miss lectures, behave any how they want as if they are demi god let's not forget that GEJ is in the system b4 so he know wots up with ASUU and money we just need revolution I urge federal govt to employ foreign lectures then we will see a turn arund in our educational system cos our nigerian lectures are wicked, proud, arrogant even worse than the politicians bt these are people that dis country use their money to train I strongly support the federal govt on dis issue@amascatel You don't seem to understand the extent of decay in the tertiary education system. I bet you that if the government advertises for university teaching positions for foreign academics to teach in our schools even with 50% mark up on current wages and allowances, very few non-nigerian academicians will apply (if any) in the SETs (Science, Engineering and Technology area). This is because at a point in your career wages alone stop being a significant motivating factor. Enhanced wages without the tools and critical mass to be at the fore front in your area of specialization are critical to most disciplined and highly qualified academics. Check out the many adverts on the papers for middle and top level academics, few people are available to take the offer. Go around our universities, you will find may be less than 0.5% foreign lecturers (mostly due to marriage to Nigerian partners) unlike in the 80's and 90's when our schools could be regarded as international in terms of staffing and students (these are part of the criteria employed in ranking universities). For instance a Phd degree in say Engineering for a Masters degree holder takes a minimum of 3 years and costs with living costs about 24,000 GBP per annum (conservative estimated living cost included) X 3 years = 72,000 GBP @ GBP:NGN approximately 265NGN to 1 GBP this costs 19,080,000.00 NGN (approx. 20 million NGN. Imagine spending 20 mil on the last and terminal stage of your education and being offered circa 2- 2.5 mil per annum teaching position without infrastructure at home (where you will expire intellectually after 3 years and take 8-10 years to earn back your doctoral expenses!! Compare this with your host country in appreciation of your newly acquired skills give you leave to stay and high possibility of working in the state of the art niche in your field with possibility of earning your doctoral expenses in 2-4 years or less. The government has partly realized this and have commenced scholarship for which I commend them especially through the TETFUND scholarships etc. However a lot more needs to be done in terms of infrastructure. In my own opinion our universities should not be offering Masters & PhDs in Engineering, physical, and biological sciences ( the infrastructure is just not there). The government needs to sit down with the stakeholders once and for all and solve this problem. The government should not just throw money at the problem. They should invest money and follow the money to ensure value for money spent. University administration and management like every sphere of our system is corrupt and wasteful. This needs to be looked into too. Government needs to work with ASUU to restore glory to our universities. It will be refresshing to see highly cited papers emanating from nigerian universities and nigerian universities with great international diversity in academic staffing and student population (greater than 20%), not the "tribal conclaves" our schools are gradually becoming. |
Personally, and from observations I think it is not meant for everybody. The parents should let her be ( since she is not passionate about it)lest she becomes a misery to an unfortunate guy. I believe people should make their choices and be bold enough to live with the consequences without whining or complaining. |
"By all means marry; if you get a good wife, you'll be happy. If you get a bad one, you'll become a philosopher." Socrates Greek philosopher in Athens (469 BC - 399 BC) If you can not resolve it now do not proceed, it will most likely get worse with marriage as partners tend to be more complacent. You are one lucky dude, you are seeing the red flags before signing up. On a lighter but still serious note, Apply wisdom as I pray that your house shall never be like the RSHA and no one shall be "maced"! Can somebody please say Amen!!! |
Too many of this kind of news. May be the next one will be born armed to the teeth with assault rifle. I will be interested the day a baby is delivered one with a book containing the detailed master plan of how to move Naija from third world to first world. |
"Aunty", may be the right time is when he is gone, or may be at his 10th time of asking! On a more serious note, For God's sake why are people more interested in make believe (aka drama)all in the name of appearing "cheap" or not. What happened to one being him/herself and straight forward. You either want to give or not. If you want to, you give. If you do not want you say No, politely and do not feel guilty. |
I don't give a damn! Let them start collecting the damn 3000 GBP, infact let them double or triple it, and apply it to all categories of applicants. Na dem get there country. Honestly, I am yet to remember, what I need to do in the UK that can not be done in the other countries of the EU. A lot of Nigerians seem to me to be very much unmindful of the options that exist and too sentimentally attached to the UK. |
I think the guy has made his position clear. You have to consider it or check out. From what I have observed a prenup does not indicate the presence or absence of love.Let us keep sentiments aside. With the way western influences have made "marriage" a walk through a lion infested forest for the men, I expect this to become common with guys that do not want to be sorry. I think its a kind of insurance that the guy does not lose everything if he loses his marriage. If you read the news you will see many babes going for the man's jugular (in terms of assets) when shit hits the fan. The current marriage laws in the west sets up the man to be "robbed" when the marriage and "love" goes down. You need to make contact with guys that were ruined by this to appreciate. |
@OP Thanks so much! Its nostalgic feelings you have conjured here!! Your post just took me far back in time. How time flies!!! |
It's quite unfortunate but your friend is just being a big fool! He is dealing with a stranger!! A man should do things at his own time and not at the behest of someone who obviously has not started earning.Did I hear you say he took loan to rent a house to please a woman that visits? At the risk of losing your friendship with this "mugu" advice him to run as fast as his legs can carry him. I will not be surprised if this guy dips his hands where he should not in other to please this babe, Your guy is gathering ant infested wood oh!! He better listens to his parents. They sitting down have seen what the your guy is not seeing seated atop an iroko tree with binoculars. If you can, talk to him, pray for him and a last ditch effort show him the posts on this topic. |
Re: I’ll Run For Presidency In 2015, Says Buhari by danny301: 9:51am "I like Buhari as a person but i sincerely feel he is pushing this ambition of becoming the President too far. Am beginning to think that Buhari has the notion that he is the only Nigerian that has what it takes to save the country from the present situation which is not true. Its true that GEJ is not all we expect of a Nigerian President yet its unfair to say that he has failed.... For the sake of Nigeria why not all the former presidents/heads of state drop their personal issues and rally around GEJ with their wealth of experiences and make succeed instead of distracting for their personal gains? The problem of Nigeria is not just GEJ or any individual but institutional intricacies and complications and to solve such fundamental mental problems the president needs the support of every Nigerian especially the 'big guns'. Buhari or any other person would still not do much as the president under the same situation, Buhari may be a strong leader but we must not forget that ruling as a military dictator is not the same as presiding over a democratic state and within the tenet of the constitution. what Africa (Nigeria) need is not a strong leader ( like Buhari, OBJ, IBB, etc) but a strong and working institution and system...." @ danny301 I have come to agree with the higlighted line in your statement concerning the subject. Coincidentally that was the same thing his colleagues (IBB & Co)accused him of (....arrogating to themselves absolute knowledge of the solution to the nation's problem) when the overthrew his ass two decades ago. Somebody that has the link to the speech can insert a link. I doubt the leopard can ever change fer spots or the zebra its stripes. To me the guy is not really a democrat. Most people that were at least 10 years old when he held sway will not argue this. |
Only 6 Billion ![]() Let them check again, I think it is much more than that. Someone said it a long time that the banks are just into "predatory practices/banking" |
It made interesting reading going through the posts. It's unfortunate that a good number of commentators seem not to have a good grasp of what it means to advance in science and technology, do not have a scientific background, irredeemably to patriotic to accept reality, and/or mad with the source or Nigerians in diaspora. I wish to thank Tony spike and other who have shed enlightened views. As much as I crave to hear encouraging news in this aspect about 9ja, I can not agree less with the list (with respect to Nigeria). Scientifically, we have been on the downward trend since the 80's and mid 90's when the most enterprising brains were forced to leave the tertiary institutions. You can not give what you do not have. In my own opinion with the state of things anyone serious in science and engineering should aspire for some international input after at most a 1st degree!!! To put it clearly, I do not think that our tertiary institutions are equipped with the appropriate manpower and tools for resourceful science and engineering education in the 21st century. If you disagree with me go to sciencedirect or ISI web of knowledge and goggle the names of faculty members in any naija school you know, if you get any hits, check the dates of these highly ranked publications, most were done over 20 years ago, most probably around the time the finished their doctorates. I am not blaming anybody but this is the situation. For those in the know, there are metrics for measuring scientific output and quality and we are so far behind at the moment. For the guy that mentioned that we have 3 nuclear reactors; this is news to me and I am desirous of more info on that. To the best of my knowledge we do not have any, as the funds released by Obasanjo's government in the late seventies developed "complications". If you have ever had access to a small nuclear facility you will be in a position to appreciate the discipline and containments needed in the design. Lastly about the mentioned "pessimism" of diaspora Nigerians, I understand them. You can not compare one thing or one experience. I believe having experienced it both ways and seeing the wasted time and lack of planned and deliberate action to reverse the trend there are little grounds for much optimism. Lastly, there is no doubt that Nigerians are very smart people individually, but we need re-education and re-orientation, a critical mass of manpower and tools backed by a clear cut national policy, and within a decade a change can be possible in this regard. |
This can not be true! I thought some top dogs declared Abacha a saint? |
"Discovery" in a University In the 21st century! Please can someone elaborate on the technological application of the discovery!! |
free13: I thought it was only in naija that police officers arrest goats.@free13 You can now see its not only in naija. Infact the Australians are just catching up. In these area naija is "well developed" and the Aussies "developing". To those that think its a joke, it wasn't. I watched it live on a news channel! |
Guy what other advice do you seek? You see a burning house and still seek for advice to enter? and ask if fire will not burn you? You are damn "lucky" to observe the character of the babe in question. It is not my character to abuse anyone, but honestly you are behaving like a Mumu Why now?Man up and run away from the babe, stop wasting your time !!! |
OP, don't bother yourself anymore! From your narrations, I see the man as a very wise dude! He has retired to the siddon look approach, which your cousin did not expect. She had crafted to draw the dude out for a fight, to date the guy has avoided the bait. I commend him. If I know kids well enough, your cousin will be the one searching for their DAD when those kids start yearning, singing and crying for their Dad. I see her encircled in the frustration and dejection she expected for the guy !!! |
Congratulations!!! |

Possibly shouting those guys are bloody liars
