Greetings good people of Nairaland!

I am currently pursuing my studies in Canada, having commenced in the fall of 2023. It has been just under a month since I started my academic journey here. My study permit is valid for two years and includes a co-op program. During the application process, I found myself in a situation where I became pregnant, and it is almost 7 months old. The workload at school has become quite overwhelming, and I often find myself exhausted upon returning home from numerous classes and with so much assignments to deal with. Unfortunately, there is no available assistance for me.

Given these circumstances, I am interested in having my husband and our two-year-old daughter join me in Canada. I am seeking your advice on which type of visa would be the most suitable for them to apply for: a visitor visa or a Spouse Open Work Permit (SOWP)? While the SOWP option is a concrete plan, I want to explore all available options to ensure the best course of action for our situation.

I would greatly appreciate your insights and guidance on this matter. Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Please act fast and bring your spouse or mum to Canada. Lots of Nigerian students, especially nursing mothers without family support falls into depression over there. A friend's wife doing masters in computer science had to pause her studies for her own sanity and returned back to Nigeria. School abroad will drain you physically and emotionally if you don't have family support or that you have been out of school for a long time.

The assignments and course loads could be unnerving and poses a challenge to someone not used to that kind of learning environment. You need all the support you could get while you navigate through this pre natal stage ofyourpregnancy. Post natal stage could even be worse if not well managed. So, let your hubby understand. Leaving his job in Nigeria may be difficult for him but let him explore possibility of taking one year leave of absence without pay just to offer you support.

This is part of life abroad that we hardly emphasis on, thinking that every one there is fine. Good luck!

It pains me when I read stories of men relying totally on their woman to foot the family bills. If things are not okay for you, show some actions and intentions to help your situation. An understanding woman will always support you. But when you turn your self to a liability, even to the woman supporting you, you become a liability.

Explore programs in Social Sciences and health. If you have good O 'level grades at "A" or "c" level, try courses in Social and Human Services. You may explore diploma programs in Social Services Workers, Early Childhood Education, Mental Health and Addiction, Clinical Psychology and in extremely rare case, if you are passionate about nursing, you could give Practical Nursing a chance. However, note that practical nursing is one of the most competitive courses in Canada. Most Colleges requires Maths, English, Biology, and Chemistry while some schools requires just English, Maths and Biology for the two year practical nursing program. Good luck!

I don't trust Soludo, honestly. These signing contracts may just be for demonstration purposes. Onitsha and Anambra as a whole is in dire need of solid infrastructure....Investment can't thrive or happen in an environment with decrepit or non existent infrastructure. I haven't heard or seen Soludo commissioned a project since he came to power. It has always been flagging off or signing the beginning of one project or the other.... no completed project to his name.

I saw it coming.....that Oshodi interchange was an over-built. That place doesn't deserve that kind of infrastructure. Government should have built a moderate bus interchange, with canopies similar to what we have in TBS, Lagos Island at a far cheaper rate.

Touts, mad men and those on the streets have converted portions of the place to quarters with people defecating every where. That oshodi environment doesn't deserve that kind of edifice.

Infrastructures, good environment, decency and decorum makes no sense to an uneducated man. When you prefer infrastructure development to human capital development, the scenario in oshodi is what you get.

The LP candidate just "stole" that constituency, riding on the back of PO to win. Nobody knew him before, neither has he done anything for the constituency. Abiodun Johnson, the former representative was a performer - he brought solar lights and did lots of empowerment program with Isolo major districts. This is my area and I know what I am saying. I feel you. It is not always an easy decision, especially if you are doing well and already well established. Nevertheless, go with your kids and settle them first. Then, let madam feel you small, , stay with them and survey the life style....you can give yourself a timeline to get done with Nigeria and go join them. You can agree with madam to relocate finally in the next 2,3 or 4 years. But you should always endeavour to visit during summer and spend quality time with family till you finally join them.

What is the possibility of starting education in Canada with an admission already gotten while in Nigeria?

Like, I got an admission while in Nigeria but now traveled to Canada with visiting visa which has been converted to work visa.

Can I now use this admission which I got while I was still in Nigeria to school in Canada?

If you are sure that you have a valid work permit, I think there is a new public policy that allows holder's of valid work permits that are already in Canada to go to school without applying for study permit. But you must continue to maintain the validity of your work permit without getting out of status while schooling. Just check with IRCC....I am sure of that new policy.

I have started sending mine but all within my neighbourhood. I am amazed at the social skills and interaction they have built. These were people that hardly greets people when walking with them on the streets. I used sending them errands to teach them "money and the change" system, which they have grasped well. They are 8 and 9. There is nothing i wont tell them to buy without them getting the right amount of change. You can send them within your vicinity but not across the streets. They do go across the streets but with my house girl. I give my 9 year old my card to buy things within the neighbourhood or collect cash from a POS nearby. It is just a way of getting her used to certain things.

In as much as our environment is toxic, polluted and dangerous, I wouldn't want them to miss a major part of their development, which is social skills and awareness of one's immediate environment. OP, also try and walk around with them in your neighbourhood so that people would know that they are yours in case of emergency or if they miss road, others will recognise them and alert you.

You have to identify the school you want to apply to and search if they have any scholarship available. Note also that scholarships may be available but only to domestic students. Scholarships are usually processed at the time of admission and if you are selected, details would be included as part of your offer letter.

There are scholarships that are given to already admitted students based on academic performance. You have to check the school website to see what are available. Note that it is extremely hard to get scholarships into nursing program as an international student in Canada. Why not explore the option of getting into the two year diploma program in practical nursing to get your licensing first? Most people that goes for masters in nursing in Canada are already nursing practitioners with licenses and registered with their respective provinces with valid status maintained with their various professional bodies.
