By Emma Amaize, Regional Editor, South-South

ASABA- FORMER Governor of Delta State, Dr. Emmanuel Udaughan, has finally confirmed that he will dump the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, for the All Progressives Congress, APC.

Speaking on phone to Vanguard, Thursday evening, the former governor said there was pressure on him to come to APC, but it was not an affair of the National Chairman of APC, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole.

“The situation is more from the situation on ground in PDP and my political future. I am also looking at my political future and those of my followers. I have studied the political terrain and I believe the Delta should not be in opposition,” he said.

Asked if Comrade Oshiomhole had discussed his movement to APC with him, Uduaghan said: Yes, I am talking with Oshiomhole, we are discussing like old colleagues, it is not a pressure, he would wish that I come over, but I also told him that I have a leader, Chief James Onanefe Ibori and they should have a discussion with him.”

An APC chieftain, who spoke to Vanguard corroborated Uduaghan’s claim, saying: “Uduaghan and Oshiomhole are ex-governors and friends, so when the matter came up regarding

Uduaghan joining APC, he made it clear that he has a political leader, who is Chief James Ibori.”

His words: “He told Oshiomhole and those, who spoke to him to discuss with Ibori because as far as he is concerned, there is no competition between him (Oshiomhole) and Ibori over who is his political leader. Ibori is his leader and I do not think that Oshiomhole will contest that.”

The stalwart added: “There are a lot of issues and undercurrents regarding Uduaghan and his movement to APC, which will not be dragged to the media just now. We have to watch.”

Findings by Vanguard indicated that the former governor may in the next few days register as an APC member and pick the party’s senatorial ticket for a battle with Senator James Manager for the Delta South senatorial ticket.

He is also expected to work with other APC leaders in the state, including Chief Great Ogboru, who he defeated in the gubernatorial elections to deliver the state to APC in 2019.

Uduaghan’s new move after many thought that he had been pacified by Chief Ibori, Governor Ifeanyi Okowa and others will certainly change political calculations in the state for 2019.

His decision to join APC has also enlivened many of his followers, who were taken aback at his initial resolution to stay back after some PDP leaders rushed to appeal to him.

So that nullifies your entire rant and YES I am a PATRIOT!

Thank you for describing yourself so well.
IN THE FIRST PLACE I HAVE NEVER ADDRESSED MYSELF AS A PATRIOT, COMING FROM THE SOUTH AND SUPPORTING SOMEONE FROM THE NORTH DOES NOT MAKE YOU A PATRIOT, IS IT VERY DIFFICULT FOR YOU TO UNDERSTAND THE MEANING IF A PATRIOT, YOU DONT SEEM TO UNDERSTAND THAT.

OK LET ME BREAK IT DOWN FOR YOU PMB IS NOT NIGERIA MIND YOU SO YOUR SUPPORTING HIM DOES NOT MAKE A PATRIOT, THE ONLY TIME YOU CAN BE QUALIFIED TO BE CALLED ONE IS WHEN YOU STAND AND DEFEND A NIGERIAN COURSE, NOT AND INDIVIDUAL.

TRY AND UNDERSTAND SOMETHING BEFORE YOU START MISLEADING PEOPLE THAT SUPPORTING PMB MAKES THEM PATRIOTS, BECAUSE NOT RESEARCHING AND ARMING YOURSELF WITH THE FACTS QUALIFIES YOU FOR A LAZY NIGERIAN YOUTH

Neatnewz:
The leader of the House of Representatives and chairman of the APC Caucus, Femi Gbajabiamila, has explained why Bukola Saraki must step down as the Senate President.

In an interview with Premium Times, Gbajabiamila said that though he was family friend with Saraki, this was based on the “letter of the law”.

According to the lawmaker who cited the US Congress as an example, it was not about impeachment, but Saraki’s eligibility for the office he occupies.

“The Senate President is a family friend I grew up with and did not know or meet in politics. That’s why this has been particularly difficult for me and I wish the situation was not what it is now.

I believe beyond the 2/3rds debate, a constitution or law is interpreted based on the letter of the law and the spirit of the law. If a provision is ambiguous as it apparently is now you look at the intention of the drafters and framers if the constitution.

“So the question is – could it have been the intention of the framers that a minority or opposition member would be a senate president? The answer is clearly no. Any other interpretation will lead to absurdity.

If we say yes the law did not mind a situation where such would happen then it means an opposition senate president can use his position to make sure the ruling party/government fails.

It would be in his interest to do so, so as to give his opposition party the opportunity to take over the government. This could never have been the intention.

5Ebiscoo:
Director General of the Voice of Nigeria (VON), Osita Okechukwu, has vowed to retire the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, from politics.

He made this known in a statement on Wednesday while speaking on his aspiration for election into the Senate in 2019 under the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Okechukwu said he would be contesting to represent Enugu West Senatorial District, currently represented by Ekweremadu.

In the statement, Okechukwu asked his party members in the district to support his ambition, adding that he would retire Ekweremadu from the Senate.

“My dear APC compatriots, may I seek your endorsement to retire Ike Ekweremadu from the Senate. I pledge to give the good people of Enugu West Senatorial District the following service – selfless, revamp Enugu coal, eastern corridor railway and cassava and rice settlement,” he said.

Okechukwu did not, however, indicate when he would publicly declare his intention in Enugu.

A strong supporter of President Muhammadu Buhari, Okechukwu was appointed DG of VON in May 2016.

Ekweremadu, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is currently spending his fourth term at the upper legislative chamber of the National Assembly having been first elected in 2003.

Politics › Re: See List Of People Buhari Vows To Jail As He Returns From London by gare(f): 1:52pm On Aug 19, 2018
Correctgist:
President Muhammadu Buhari on Saturday promised that his administration would jail more looters who caused the nation’s economic woes.Buhari made the promise in an interview he granted shortly after he returned to the country from London, United Kingdom where he spent his 10-day working vacation.

When asked what Nigerians should expect from him on resumption, the President said, “Most Nigerians are expecting that we are going to jail more of the thieves that brought economic problem to the country. I think that is being expected of me and I will do it.”

Buhari who also fielded questions on the recent defection of politicians, especially that of Godswill Akpabio from the Peoples Democratic Party to the ruling All Progressives Congress, said it was part of the beauty of democracy.

He said under democracy, individuals have the choice of identifying with political parties of their choice.Buhari however advised politicians to provide the necessary dividends of democracy to the people.

Ahead of the 2019 general elections, the President also urged politicians to sensitise their constituents to get their Permanent Voter Cards. This, he said, would enable them to freely vote for the candidates of their choice during the elections. He said, “Defection should be appreciated as the beauty of democracy. People can choose the party they want to belong to.

“Let them make sure that they empower their constituents by educating them on voters registration and making sure that they get their Permanent Voter Cards and they use their rights as Nigerians to vote whoever they like across ethnicity and religion. “This is a beauty of democracy in Nigeria, this is what I am hoping to see.”

Those who received the President included the governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello; Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha; Chief of Staff to the President, Abba Kyari; and the Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Muhammad Bello.

Others were the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Gabriel Olonisakin; Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai; Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Ibok Ekwe Ibas; Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshall Abubakar Sadique; Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris and Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crime Commission, Ibrahim Magu.

Meanwhile, Buhari on Saturday sent a letter to the Senate and the House of Representatives, informing the federal lawmakers of his resumption for duties as President upon the completion of his 10-day working leave. The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, disclosed this in a statement made available to journalists.

Buhari wrote the letter titled “Resumption of Office” shortly after he returned to Nigeria from London, United Kingdom where he remained throughout the vacation period. The President’s letter to the National Assembly read, “In compliance with Section 145 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended),

I write to intimate the Senate (House of Representatives) that I have resumed my functions as the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria with effect from today, Saturday, August 18, 2018,after my vacation.“Please accept, Distinguished Senate President, (Hon. Speaker, House of Representatives) the assurances of my highest consideration.”

Inec under the electoral law has now power to cancel, reject or interfere in any electoral results already announced by the INEC appointed returning officer in any concluded election.

We saw it in T.A Orji Vs Ikpeazu, Uchendu Vs Sekibo etc..

I believed INEC announced the purported "Suspension" to calm frayed nerves pending the time they will issue the Certificate of Return to the announced winner.

Anyone who is not satisfied with the stipulated law of the electoral act, will have to explore the window of remedy through the Tribunal.

Consequently, the winner should continue his/her celebration as Nothing will upturn those results as announced by the Returning Officer except the court of Law.
