freshvine:To be sincere I'm being as open minded abt the 2 of them as can be. I'm nt trying to take sides, cos I like being on the fence most times anyway unless necessary. Personally, I see nothing wrong abt joint ownership of things, but is the husband ready to do anything jointly wt her? A man that built a house and it was a stranger that told the wife abt it, or the myriads of land he has wc his wife wldn't av known abt if nt for some members of his extended family that told her abt them. A man who the wife gave money to, to buy a land for her, bought the land and stepped on it, she doesn't even know the location of a land she paid for. A man who neither his wife nor children are his next of kin. How can u be open with someone that is secretive? So it is that kind of man u expect the wife to hand over the only land she has to in the name of doin somethn jointly? And I avn't seen how what she did is deception, her dad died and willed her a land and she discussed her plans abt the land wt her husband, hw is that deception? And no, I can't say my dad is an angel ryt from heaven cos he also has his own flaws but he is better off. |
freshvine:I try not to poke nose into their family affairs, but I relatively knw well abt them since I once lived wt them. Of course my aunt spend on the family even b4 then, she gives her own quota, feeding and clothing the family even beyond d allowances the man gives for the monthly upkeep wc is not even up to half of what is needed, she provides the provisions the children take to sch and also gives pocket money. I blive u dnt expect her to take up the children's sch fees too as a means of supporting her husband. They jointly bought her car. As regards a woman supporting a man financially, I give it to her. I dnt see anything wrong with what she did, what of women that wld av completed the house or project b4 their husband even knows anything, but this woman shared her plans with the husband only for him to withdraw any form of financial wherewithal to keep the family's upkeep and became mean and all. If that isn't shelving his duties I dnt knw what it is. She hasn't been able to do anything reasonable on the land till nw, cos of the financial responsibilities she is facing alone. And financially the husband is ok even helps outsiders but I don't knw what his wife did to him o. The issue was putting ur trust in someone, seeking for support and advice on hw to do things, and being punished for it. And the husband is even a secretive being, anything he does, it's his wife that hears last, sometime even from a stranger. Their marriage sef. God I dnt pray for such o. And what do u mean, doing it in her name, I don't get u. So when u marry or if u're married, if u were in her shoes, u wld av even handed the land over to him, made it in his name, and tell him to do whatever he wants with it. |
But some men make one think twice b4 opening up to a man. I av an aunt whose father died and left her a land, and she decided to work on it. After showing her husband the plans drawn for the house, the husband stopped providing for her and children's feeding, clothing, etc and she can't even run to her husband for aid if she is broke. When the children ask for anything, the nxt thn is 'go to ur mother' even when he gives freely outsiders. U wld think some husbands dnt want their wives to do anything gud in life. It's not gud to keep thns from one's spouse but some men wld use it against the woman shelving their duties, making the woman perform the role of both husband and wife in the family. May God save one from men who take pride in irresponsibility. |
Nicepoker:Eeyah, becos it doesn't suit ur hatred filled mind. Seriously, when we say youths are leaders of tommorow I wonder what kind of leaders we mean. What is there is the entire report for any region to be proud and happy abt? If we are all right thinking individuals. Becos another article was brought out to show the SW isn't has poor and poverty ridden has u wld like it to be, u aren't happy. Weird human being. And ur clans are many in the SW living off the region. I wonder where all these hatred against fellow tribes is coming from, yet when we travel out, we keep crying the whites are being racist when we ourselves are hate filled tribalists always happy when a bad thing happens to another tribe. What type of sick-minded individuals do we av in this Country! |
From what I can see OP u are a very superficial person. What attracted u to her in the 1st place that made u ask her out to the point of intro and her changing her religion and all. So it's nw u realise she is aging earlier than u, what if u marry someone who aged less than u and God forbid the person has an accident or dermatological problem that disfigured her, wld u divorce her cos of that? If u are satisfied with her other qualities, u can always tu-sh her up, if it's the way she dresses that makes her look older, get her clothes u prefer, or if it's that she is getting fatter, u can subtly tell her and work out ways to shed off the excess fat. If this is the only reason u're having 2nd thoughts, then it's flimsy, when will ageing now set in? Or u'll divorce ur wife once she starts ageing. |
From what I'av been seeing and hearing, the discrimination against HND is real and serious. Besides I dnt think it is advisable to go 1st for HND when u still av the plans to get the BSC, why not go straight after ur OND, unless u want to do a PGD after the HND then masters |
OrlandoOwoh:From what I can see, u're both making the same points, but what flightz is saying is those auxiliary 'nurses' are actually quacks becos they aren't recognized within the nursing cadres in Nigeria, it's either u're a registered nurse or a quack, no in btw. |
drberry:Yh, that's true. Nice thinking. All the best sir |
igyuzus:Nice one. |
drberry:That's cul. It's true the image is a turn off and disheartening. Psychiatric nursing is very interesting, but the hazard part tho. Some of my colleagues got slapped and hit by pts then during our neuro-psychiatric experience. I can remember a day a pt became violent, seriously I didn't know how I got outside the ward that day, I no get liver reach that side. The male nurses had to restrain and sedate him. I'll love to go the education route, I'll look into nursing education when the time comes, what do u think? |
drberry:Wow! That's good, so u're now a Dr but still av nursing at heart. I totally understand, personally I always say nursing has no 'leaders' but mere ceremonial heads, the only duty of theirs they know is to collect dues from nurses, not caring abt the profession's progression and image. It's only the passion still keeping most of us, nursing is discouraging here. But I know with the advent of the new generation nurses, we'll get there. Best of luck in ur new profession |
drberry:Wow! Going thru ur posts, I'm amazed to see a Dr sticking up for nurses. It's very rare cos most will rather join in castigating nurses or spread hate mssgs abt them. |
butanep:Stop displaying ur ignorance Mr Man, men have been coming into nursing for ages with increasing educational status and versatility of nurses and nursing is gradually becoming a gender neutral profession. Just like medicine was seen for males only in the past but nw populated by both sexes. Nursing even needs more masculine hands and by God's grace we'll get there. Nurses are proud of their profession so stop the hate propagation and come out from the rock u live in. |
This made me remember some months back, when the judges of 'The view' had insulted a nurse who had donned her scrubs for the Miss America or so pageant and had talked about a memorable pt she had nursed; even though they thought they were being funny. I'm sure they never saw what was coming when American nurses and citizens stood up for nurses, making them lose sponsors and a campaign was made for the program to be boycotted all. They learnt not to mess with nurses. Anyway, I'm a nurse and I wonder why I don't feel slighted by the comment, I guess it's the thick skin you have to grow to be a nurse in Nigeria. Insults from every angle, absolutely no regard, and all the negative stereotypes pple av created abt nurses. U just av to av that thick skin so u won't face psychological torment over nothing. U can imagine working hard throughout a shift, caring for pple and after relaxing and logging in to a forum most of the time all u see is pple painting nurses in a bad lyt. |
sunnyb0b0:no they are not, the graduate nurses are more professionally advanced, but be informed that the nurses from SONs went through rigorous training for 3yrs+ to be qualified and write the same licensure exam with the BNSC nurses to av the right to practice. Whether BNSC or Diplomate, u av to be a RN first. Many nurses are aspiring for more professional advancement hence their quest for more knowledge and specialization |
Thanks OP for bringing this topic forward. These auxiliary nursing ish is indeed a menace. Be informed that no matter how Drs want to sugar coat it, these mostly illiterates or semi- literate people are actually quacks. The auxiliary nursing training is no recognised in Nigeria and certainly not the way Drs are going about it. They train illiterates some who can barely even speak good eng in some basic nursing skills, forgetting nursing isn't just about giving injections. These quacks perform the duties of qualified nurses in most private hospitals in Nigeria all in a bid of some Drs to maximize profit by paying them peanuts at the detriment of t's health, not minding the harm these pple can cause to lives. They do not av rationale for what they do, they just know the Dr said they shld do it this way and they follow suit. And since in Nigeria anything goes, we are almost lawless, they get away with it. Some of these quacks go as far as establishing hospitals even conducting operations, deliveries, circumcision, treatment of ignorant Nigerians. A friend of mine bro almost lost his hand to a quack few years back. But who do I blame the most? It's definitely the govt and NMCN. Why shld NMCN continue watching Drs do somethn they can't condone in their profession to our profession, they scream to the high heavens abt quack Drs, while they are the ones propagating quackery. Is a quack nurse any less deadly than a quack Dr? And at the end of the day these quacks even go on to practice as quack Drs |
donodion:Thank u, sounds cool. I'll sure check it out. |
bnovative:Normally, I don't argue with people who are obviously holding on to a stereotype, but ur points are full of fallacies. Pray tell how nurses are contributing more to the health sector in shambles than lack of equipment, adequate personnel, and an enabling environment to provide care? Yes, there are bad eggs in nursing, someone being saucy and mean is a personality thing and not an attribute of the pple in a profession. If a nurse was rude to u or was negligent report to the appropriate quarters and don't paint everyone black. The issue of BNSC and SON nurses is by the way, every nurse whether BNSC or diplomate has to write and pass the same licensure exam and have the basic RN which qualifies them to practice as nurses, and it isn't the certificate a nurse holds that determines if she is a good nurse, a nurse with masters might not have the compassion, empathy and good interpersonal relationship the diplomate nurse has although better in knowledge, and besides all nurses are striving for professional advancement everyday so no qualms there. All nurses might be painted black by every1 becos of some bad eggs they meet, but it doesn't change the fact that there are nurses working their butts off every minute even with limited resources trying to save and improve lives of pple who do not appreciate them. I'm curious, what's ur profession? |
Thanks OP for the wonderful write up. Sadly, most Nigerians are already filled with stereotypes about health care workers esp nurses 'since they seem to interact more with the pt and their relatives', whether through mere hearsay and sometimes as a result of some bad experiences. But we all av to realise that the health care system is in shambles originating from the govt, down to many corrupt CMDs, who are also actively involved in embezzling funds for health care, thank God some of them are being exposed already. Yes, there are bad eggs amidst health workers, this can be said if we aren't hypocritical abt all professions and vocations. And we av to realize these pple are working under conditions extremely below the norm, in a situation where just 2 nurses sometimes even a nurse is expected to care for almost 20 pts, all with varying degrees of illness and we expect effective care is a mirage, we aren't machines for goodness sake! How can just 2 nurses be in emergency unit and at the same time cover labor unit, and this is common in some State hospitals. How do u want them to discharge their duties effectively in such situation? And when anything goes wrong, they are verbally and physically assaulted, yet the masses see nothing wrong with that and still vilify them. I'av seen cases where pts abscond with outstanding bills, and the nurses are made to pay for these from the already meagre salary, yet u expect them to overlook the hospital policy after being bitten in the hands already. They also av their families somewhere looking up to them. In the face of little equipment, overwork, unfavourable conditions, these pple provide the best they can in the face of these insanity to provide the care, but at the end of the day, the thanks they get is been verbally and sometimes physically assaulted. In situations when nurses av to use lantern and lamps to serve drugs even in tertiary hospitals, a midwife using lamp to take delivery, sometimes some pts don't even buy the required items for delivery,I don't know if they expect the nurses to get them for them too, or surgeons and the team conducting operation and the light goes off, how do we expect the output to be perfect and mistakes not arising? Let's face the reality, the health care system is in shambles, and it's high time, the govt is held responsible rather than preying on the health workers. The politicians don't give a damn becos they don't use these facilities, so the rot in the system is insignificant to them, the hospital mgt wld rather absolve themselves of any blame and look for a scape goat. |
[quote author=dicefrost post=39750106]I have read quite a handful of stories about unfortunate and preventable deaths in our hospitals, both private and public. Some have touched me personally, especially when it involves a pregnant woman, or a young promising life like the uniport student. For anyone who has been a victim, no amount consolation would be enough to pacify the pain of losing a loved one. As a nurse, i have seen this scenario play out time and again, to the point that i have grown thick skin, but i still feel deeply for anyone who has lost a loved one in death. Death is usually more painful when it could have been avoid. But in Nigerian hospitals, avoidable deaths tend to be more common. Believe me, only a few actually come to public knowledge. And when it does, one set of healthcare professionals are often at the receiving end of the vituperation and opprobrium it generates ; The NURSES!. They are the easiest to vilify, and push around. Often times, we only hear one side of these stories, that is the deseased's side, or in rare cases we hear the side of the hospital management. This article is not meant to exonerate nurses from all blame, (sometimes they are directly responsible) it is meant to tell one of such stories from the nurse's angle. If we look at these stories carefully with an open mind you would discover one major problem in our hospitals, and that is lack of equipments. Like in the case of the upth student, the problem was lack of bed space. We only heard the story from one side, and we vilified the nurses and doctors, and berated them for not finding an alternative. Well i wasn't at upth, so i have no idea what really happened. But i have lost a patient in similar fashion before, and i was almost beaten up by the patient's relatives, so i can relate. In my own case, we were only two nurses on duty, myself and another nurse who was pregnant at the time. We were covering the emergency and labour ward together. The patient in question arrived with his family members, he was in obvious distress, but his condition did not seem life threatening at the time. Myself and my colleague were both in the labour room, trying to deliver a baby with breech presentation, an extremely risky procedure. When i heard their shout for attention, i left my colleague alone to handle the delivery (which was risky) in order to attend to the new patient. There was no bed space, so i simply spread a blanket on the ground for him to lie on. The family members protested, but i had neither the time nor the patience to explain and negotiate with them. I explained our admission procedure to them, told them to pay for a card, and purchase the A&E kit. Once again, they protested that they had no money. I explained to them that given the fact that he had been vomiting and stooling, he would need i.v infusion immediately. I put a call across to the doctor on call, who was equally busy, and headed back to the labour room. After about 30 minutes, the doctor arrived. The family had not purchased the A&E kit, neither had they paid for a card. So he referred them to a teaching hospital and left for the theater. They called me out a few minutes later, this time one of them had an i.v infusion with him, which he had gone to buy from a local chemist that night. They begged me to give him the infusion. I explained to them that the hospital policy does not permit me to insert a canula into a patient's vein, hence they have to wait for the doctor. I left them again, and called the doctor to inform him. The doctor came back, and insisted that they should go to the teaching hospital. About thirty minutes later, i heard a loud shout, and rushed out to see what was happening. Behold, our patient was unconscious, and almost not breathing. I advised the family to quickly take him to the teaching hospital, because we do not have equipments to resuscitate him. They requested for an ambulance and someone to accompany them. There was a problem, we only had one ambulance driver, and he doesn't work night shifts, and more so we had no personnel to spare for the trip. All hell broke loose, the family members began to shout and make threats. I had to hide my head. I left them and went back to the labour room. I did not hear from them again that night, until the morning after when hoodlums invaded the hospital, bearing matchets and sticks. I scaled the hospital fence and got away. The doctor and the morning nurses weren't so fortunate, they vandalised cars and beat them up. The boy died, but the story that was circulated was that " because they had no money, the wicked nurse refused to attend to them, and left them to go and sleep elsewhere. When they even bought drip from a chemist. May God bless u my brother for this wonderful write up |
Hmmm, the suffering is real. That's why when I feel depressed thinking life is unfair to me, I take a walk look at pple who wld wish to be in my position, then I give myself a mental slap for being an ingrate, and thank God. There wld be no poor person if the rich pple give to the less privileged. There are some pple who are rich enough to feed and take care of a whole town but rather than do that they prefer spending in frivolities and looking for ways to amass more wealth, the rich gets richer and the poor poorer. In a Country where some don't even know what to eat the next day, someone publicly boasted of making her goat hair with close to a million every 2 wks. That is how vain pple are, we are all about enjoying this World to the fullest, not minding there is a poor mother somewhere crying herself to sleep cos she can't feed herself nor her children who even half of the money we waste without 2nd thought wld make a lot of difference to. It is well. Let's all ensure we do the little we can to make things better for the less privileged. Personally I av an habit of giving out alms to the poor any time I go out, and even from my provisions give out to pple I know can't afford it. If we all do the little we can, we'll make Nigeria a better place. |
Pennywise:Thanks for that observation. Most Drs posted to the PHCs are hardly ever at their duty post. There is a PHC near my house, sincerely I av never come across the Dr posted there and a PHC where I had my community health experience. Yet, these absentees will get paid for the work not done even more than the 1-2 nurses and the CHEWS working with them. But at the end of the day when something goes wrong, these bad eggs will be covered up by their ogas and the nurses will be the scapegoat. I think it's high time erring health workers are made to face the music for their wrongdoings. |

chiefmidwife:Ur comment really bugged me. Are u doing ur work merely to receive a pat on the back? There are many nurses working their butts off everyday to save lives, but u just diminished their worth with this comment. It's true nurses aren't well paid, understaffed, over-worked, marginalized, underappreciated etc. But every time the joy in helping in saving a life, bringing a new life to this World, seeing a very ill pt come back to life and the appreciative smile on ur pts and their relatives faces, and when u lose a pt the feeling that, I tried my best, makes it all bearable. Just play ur own part. |
Eeyah, poor woman. This is a very pathetic case. RIP to the mother and child. My observation is that the hospital is a primary health care centre and sincerely many of our PHCs are nothing to write home abt, they can barely handle normal cases not to talk of critical ones due to lack of equipment and personnels. Most Drs don't want to work at the grassroots and the ones that do, might not been seen around for weeks. The PHC in my area, I av never even met the Dr posted there once. So the work falls on the nurses and CHEWS. Sometimes only one or 2 nurses and several CHEWS. I don't know abt that particular PHC but most I see around where I reside av just at most 3 nurses and the other workers are CHEWS and record officers. It might even be possible the two women the man met that nyt were CHEWS not nurses, and the man shld av listened instead of being persistent when he was told they can't handle the case and found his way out, u don't claim stubborn when the lives of ur loved ones are at stake. Leave and find somewhere else they can be managed. The system is a very bad one, I must say. It isn't even advisable for a woman to register at only one ANC, she cld register to 2 probably a PHC and a hospital with more facilities in case of emergency, that way both will have her history. May God give him the fortitude to bear the loss. |
Congrats to her. She is lucky though, made me remember one of my great aunts, she is actually older than my dad. She got retired last month never married with no child, although she has asked that one of my cousins come and keep her company for a while. I feel so sorry for her. A childhood friend of my mum is in the same boat, what I don't really understand is that these women are very beautiful even till now, I wonder why they never found some1 to start a family with. |
Shameless dogs. I wonder what the married lady will tell her husband though. |
kaziblake:Eeyah, sorry abt that. It must av left a mark psychologically on u and ur siblings. Hope ur mum is doing gud |
May God save us from animals in men clothing. The woman probably endured the abuse till he finally killed her. Most times the warning signs are there even during courtship, if ur fiance raises his hand to slap or hit u, abeg run for ur life o not to talk of marrying him becos of a supposed stupid love blinding u. The Society is also hypocritical in this case, they expect women to adjust to every blow marriage throws her no matter the severity. Don't continue suffering cos of ur children in a mad man's house, leave ASAP b4 he kills u. These pathetic cases of physical abuse keeps cropping up every day. I even heard a case where the man beat up the wife and her mother, and the stupid woman still insists she'll return to him. |
This brought tears to my eye, such evil and an innocent child, that maid deserves the death penalty, psychos like her shld't be allowed to live |
Lolz, maybe she ate too much pounded yam ni.
This is the perfect definition of hypocrisy, anyway HML |

... Actually I first did my BNsc. However our primary and major problem is not even about the doctors but with the leadership of the profession (NMCN & NANNM). They've not helped in anyway to protect the image not raise the head of the profession. I believe you should know better what I'm talking about.
