Let me make it clearer for Op, Engine will run and the car will still move if the auxiliary belt belts. Only issue will be: if the belt drives PAS pump, the steering wheel will be very heavy to steer since the pump has stopped spinning; if the A/C compressor pulley is belt driven, the A/C won't work, unless its electrically driven compressor ; finally, the battery power will start dropping as long as the engine is running, since the Alternator is no longer spinning. So, again, which of the belt broke? Ikenna. |
Op, Is like you are mixing things up. Serpentine belt is another name for auxiliary belt: belt that drives Alternator, PAS pump and A/C compressor pulleys via Crankshaft pulley. Only failed Timing belt would cause such damage that would require such repair in the engine. So, which of the belt failed? Ikenna. |
Get an Electric contact cleaner, methylated spirit, thinner or any solvent you can lay your hands on, aside Carb cleaner. Also, get a used toothbrush and get to work. Pull out and clean all the wiring connectors you can lay your eyes on, especially the ones in the engine bay. When i mean cleaning, i meant brushing both male and female connectors with the toothbrush and the solvent. It's likely that one of the connectors feeding the engine ECU from sensors is corroded, making the engine power to drop, since the values been received from the sensors are not adequate to make the engine carry such loads and would make charging system to drop. Don't forget to clean the ECU wiring connectors as well. Pull out the connector(s) from the ECU and clean only the connector with brush and solvent. On the ECU side, use dry toothbrush to clean or brush off moisture. How good are your battery terminals ? Replace them if corroded. Or simply replace them. Have you checked if any relay is cause of battery drain? Do carry that test, drive the car to a quiet place, disconnect the battery negative terminal. Reconnect and listen. While reconnecting the battery terminal, listen for any click sound. If you hear such sound, try and trace where it's coming from. It will likely be a failed relay that is staying on constantly and will be draining the battery power if left overnight. Have you checked if positive is bridging somewhere with the negative? With your DMM (Digital MultiMeter), you can confirm if that is the issue. But test light will give you the best result. Disconnect the negative battery terminal, leave the positive terminal connected, place one the test light wire on the engine block and place the 2nd test wire on the negative battery head (not on the removed negative cable head). If there is no bridge of negative and positive, the test light will light very faint or may not light at all. But if there is a bridge, the bulb will lite full. With the DMM, place the 2 leads as explained already with the test light. Set it to 20v on DCA. If there is no bridge, the DMM will display -12v or nothing at all. But if there is bridge, the DMM will display 12v (+12v). If bridge exist, you will have to make out time to expose all the wires and find a naked one. Don't also forget to check and clean all the ground connections on the engine, transmission or/and body, like car-doctor have suggested earlier. You never know. Good luck. Ikenna. |
From what i have gathered from au.hanson post, the E46 330i appears to make more sense than the 328i. Before, i thought 330i was turbocharged. I always prefer Naturally Aspirated engine, even if the Turbocharged one has higher hp. But, note that the E46 330i has Electronic Throttle Body. It's driven by the ECU and not cable via pedal. It will easily go into Limp Home mode if ECU senses a malfunction in the system, depending on the program, like Euro IV emission system. The 328i has a simple injection system, not as complex as 330i. But 231 hp with 6-speed manual transmission makes it irresistible. Note that nearly all new cars these days have electrically controlled throttle body butterfly. All it will take and enjoy the ride is to study and understand the injection system. The rest is piece of cake. After all, my SV D9 has Motorised Throttle Body as well (Electric TB). And no one has complained of the MTB failure of the ES9J4S. But a failure of pre-atalytic converter will set the car to limp home mode. Meaning, care is taken where one buys fuel with such car with such injection system. Ikenna. |
Siena has spoken, Ikenna will not recommend any brand that is not ' Lion'.
Am not sure about that. I have recommended a lot of people Toyota cars, depending on what they want out of a car. I get calls and PMs a lot on that. Ikenna. |
Bossforeva: Plz Fellow Men in the MB Owners Club Nairaland..You are beginning to spam the section with the above. Don't get yourself a ban. Similar post from you in next time won't be overlooked. Moderator. |
@ Emperoh & au.hanson, I wonder why you guys are so scared of BM, especially the E46. I took a special interest in E46 328 sometime last year. From my finding, after physically examining or studying one, it's a complete DIY car. Every injection component is well layed out on the engine, and easily reached. A very simple injection system, to my understanding. My point is, if iam to add another RWD to my collection, E46 328 it will be, for now. So, guys, have no fear. Ikenna |
Joel., No one is laughing at you. What is causing the laughter is the way the story was narrated and what the ordeal the mechanics metted on the poor car. That what made it funny. Go back and read your starting post and tell me it isn't funny. Besides, the incident happend in 2008, meaning, you must have moved on by now. So, you were asking "the way forward". I don't know what way forward you need us to tell you since the car is no longer with you. If not, we would have asked you to revert the conversion and put the car in its original shape. Then we can then suggest to you the proper method to diagnose the car issues, since from what you said, the issue was not with the engine, but with what controls the engine. We are not perfect being more than you are. Some of us have been scammed too in various sectors. We all had made mistakes that cost us a lot. But we have learnt our lessons and moved on. There is so much in life for one to attain than one allow himself to be held/pull down by one misfortune. Notwithstanding, you kind made it sound as if you went through that nightmare because it was VW Passat. The issue had nothing to do with the brand or the car, but you fell into the wrong hands and fail to realise that on time and continued. The way you put, the thread is enough to scare people away from the VW brand or that particular Passat year model. That's the point i believe Siena pointed out. It is well. Ikenna. |
Abeg make the price come down so that i go fit purchase that my long awaited BMW ride. Ikenna , a friend went to Cotonou and bought an e36 BMW 318 for just 320k, everyhing packaged with delivery, i was amazed. Clean looking ride. When i asked of the unforseen problem this car could develop , he pointed to his mothers own he has been using for 5 years now and told me my brother ''there isnt no car like BM yet, all you need do is to understand this beast just the way you understand that your benz" He futher said that its the drivers mechanic car, that he dosent go to mechanic but fixes all those minor injuries himself, my appetite started getting wet for BM
Don't mind them Ikenna. |
Siena: Ikenna, I'm laughing my head off at your response.Because that's the only thing i can think of. Unless they thought the ECU na winch! Ikenna. |
Op, Your last post confirmed what i said earlier. The issue with the car when you bought her had nothing to do with the engine, rather the engine management, what was controlling the engine. A simple scan would have fix that car with just few thousands or less than you could imagine. Unfortunately, the car is no more yours, probably have been put to pieces. Poor Passat in the wrong hands! Ikenna. |
Op, You deserve award for making me laugh till tears started coming out from my eyes! Honestly, this thread deserve to be saved in Car Talk Library, so that anyday person provoke me for here, i go quickly rush to Library go laugh myself out. How on Earth would someone who called himself a mechanic considered swapping in another engine without remembering that it's been controlled by a computer ? If he knew the engine was been controlled by "brain box", was he thinking the engine communicates with the "brain box" via bluetooth ? How come he didn't know the engine harness will run from the engine ECU to the sensors/components scattered on the engine and relays? Did he not see the old engine wiring harness on the engine bay before the old engine was removed? As if the wrong engine and no engine wiring harness issue was not enough, he went ahead to construct in a carburettor on the intake manifold without considering first if the height of the carburettor will size the limited space available for the bonnet to close. Who would do such a thing biko nu? Is it not only someone who makes people laugh in circus would do that? Is like they have graduated from Clown to something else. Op, who told you that engine didn't exist in Nigeria in used spare part market at the time you were searching for it? Do you think it's only in Ladipo that such car part market exist? Did you try Mgbuka-Obosi in Anambra state during the hunt for the engine replacement ? Have you ever been to that place? Funny enough, a Nigerian will tell you that a car emitting black smoke means dead engine. A simply issue as CTS failure could mean a dead engine in Nigeria, simply because when clowns can't detect a fault causing engine malfunctioning, the engine will be declared dead, just like medical doctors do to dead patients. How are we even sure the original engine in that car has failed? What if the issue was ECU or sensor related? Probably some clowns must have connected some nonsence somewhere and blew up the the poor ECU or some electronics and the car refused to start or run properly. And for that, they declared the engine dead. I don't even know what else to say. Ikenna. |

Kingsteve: Or, is it a case of the typical Nigerian stereotype? cos most Nigerians believe that any brand with a 'Toyota' logo on it, automatically becomes fuel efficient and reliable. In 2006 in Enugu, i was watching CNN. A man was been interviewed. He was narrating how he was driving his brand new Toyota Prius on a road in US i think, when all of a sudden, the car started accelerating itself without his input. He was not accelerating, yet the car was serious increasing speed. He tried to stop by holding the brake pedal, but it seemed not to help him. He had to swerve out of the road to prevent hitting an object, pedestrians or other vehicles, before the car suddenly stopped accelerating itself. He swore in front of the Camera that no Toyota badge again as long as he lives. That same year, Toyota recalled hundreds or maybe thousands of Prius sold in US at that time for throttle sensor and i think electric throttle body issues, which tends to accelerate the Prius on its own while car is in motion. Sometime in 2003 or 2004 (am not so sure of the year), i read in one of the national dailies about the recall of new Lexus (SUV), of a particular model, been recalled by Toyota. Reason was given that the SUV would suddenly spin, turn and face the side of the road it was coming from, at every small bend. Toyota's reason was that the rear stability sensor was failing to signal to body ECU or something on time when it should have sensed the the car was negotiating a bend, for the electronically controlled suspension and rear stabilizer to do their work. Meaning the SUV body was not structured /designed to handle bend except with the help of sensors. Am not trying to talk down on Toyota brand, but the way some Nigerians see that brand as if it's the only perfect thing on Earth, baffles me. The thing is, most of their issues surface during warranty and are been fixed or recalled to be fixed, for free. But probably because other car brands issues start surfacing after some thousands or kilometres, their complaints seem to be more noticed. But my simple question to the reliability arguement is this: if your car is so perfect or so relaible that other brands are not close, why so much recalls from that brand at early life of their cars when newly rolled out? Or you think they enjoy recalling cars? Do you know how many millions they spend in fixing those issues which are not paid for? Like KA24DETTsaid, "You buy a car based on how it makes you feel and how it drives, not what will happen 10-15 yrs down the road". That's how i buy mine. Ikenna. |
afortress: i did and never got a response thats why i started this thread... Thanks anyways...So it didn't occur to you why no one responded to your query in Peugeot thread? https://www.nairaland.com/1003701/peugeot-thread-psa-community/32#17852518 Your questions were not answered because they have been treated over and over again in that thread. If you had spent 10-20 mins in going through the thread, you wouldn't posted that questions. Anyway, you didn't state what phase of 406 that interest you? D8 or D9? This is something you ought to have known since you have visited the Peugeot house. There are lots of information for everyone who is interested in any Peugeot product in that house. I can guess to know which phase that interest you, so i will pick one and treat. If you interested in D9, and as your first car, stay away from auto tranny D9. D9 has 2 auto trannies: 4HP20 & AL4. AL4 it's an expensive tranny to run. The recommend fluid is not available in Nigeria, unless you plan to ship in from Europe. And when something goes wrong in it, it will need a specialist to rebuild it. Not every auto tranny repairer can overhaul AL4. Even in Abuja, we are yet to find one who can rebuild AL4. The AL4 was co-produced by Peugeot, Renault & Siemen. 4HP20 is less wahala to own/drive. But then, it's still prone to unexpected failure, just like every other auto trannies in other car brands. If it must be auto tranny, stay away from Peugeot 406 then. You can try the Japs. As for the D9 engine best suited for a beginner, get XU10, EW 7 or EW 10. But if you think you are a heavy right footed, then EW 12 will best suit you, but special attention is needed to own it. D9 V6 is out of the question for a bigginer. Ikenna. |
Name is Engine Mount. I have corrected the title. Ikenna. |
^^^^ Lol! @ 20 trucks with 20 halogen headlights. Been there. In November 2011, i left Lokoja around 8pm, heading to Abuja, with my then 605 V6. It was horrible. In my case, almost all the trucks in Nigeria were on that road that night. As if it wasn't enough, on each of the trucks, the whole front end has headlights all over. I was crawling, it was no longer driving. How i could still drive when i can't see my front. In the whole journey, i was completely blind behind the wheel. To make it clearer, i arrived Abuja at exactly 11:45 pm. A journey that would have lasted 2 and half hours.I even lost a tyre and a wheel that night before i even go to Abaji. A night i won't forget. As for the topic, i opened a similar topic not quite long, stressing about this speed limiter thing (though about EU). I hope this people are not reading Car Talk to shape policies regarding our roads? Find the discussion in the link below: https://www.nairaland.com/1421478/eu-plans-fit-all-cars Even one doing 80 km/h can be pushed into the bush by other vehicles and may end up in the mortuary. I know what it's like when it happened to me. Road accidents is not always about speed. Ikenna. |
KA24DETT: Bro, 40mpg on the highway? That's amazing . What's the engine RPM at 100km/hr? Very tall gearing on OD? Am impressed .Yes, it has has VVT (on/off). As for the rpm at 100km/h, i haven't paid attention at rpm at such speed since i usually push the car to that speed with the 4th gear. Though, when am in the mood, i push the car to 100 km/h with the 3rd gear for fun. The experience is unimaginable. Anyway, i do know that when the car is doing 130 km/h, the tacho needle will rest around 3k rpm. One thing about V6 people don't know is that if you drive it sensibly, you will get amazing fuel economy out of it. The manual transmission helps me too to achieve that. Ikenna. |
elektra80: Mr Ikenna.. I don't know ur car more than u do, so apologies if I was wrong. Its just unbelievable for a v6 petrol car to give 40mpg especially in Nigeria that we use adulterated fuels. You might be right though.. but my point is don't always believe the reading on the computer as its always off the real mpg. What do u say about my friend's benz that displays 81mpg while u are driving on the highway. I got my facts fromI do understand you. But i was only trying to point "don't delve into something you do not understand ". To start with, the link you provided is a complete crap. Secondly, mine js saloon, while the one reviewed in that crappy blog or whatever is coupe. Both have different weight and aerodynamics. The reviewer couldn't even differentiate or fail to realise that 406 is of two phases: Phase I (D8) 1995-1998; Phase II (D9) 1999-2008 or beyond (though, 406 production stopped in France in 2004). Both D8 & D9 V6s have 2 different V6 engines. Similar, but not identical. The D8 V6 has 194 hp, which is the hp the blog claimed v6 upto 2003 had. Those that mean the D9 also has the 194 hp v6? ES9J4 is the V6 engine in all D8 V6. It was co-produced by Peugeot & Renault after the PRV production stopped in late '90s. It has 194 hp. Mounted only in Saloon and coupe (no D8 v6 SW, i think). ES9J4S, a V6 engine in D9, from 1999-2004 (also mounted in 807 v6, 407 v6 & 607 v6 as ES9A with constant vvt). It has maximum of 210 hp. It was co-produced by Peugeot, Renualt & Porsche. It's an ES9J4 (D8 v6 ) modified by Porsche for better fuel efficiency and higher hp. It was mounted in D9 Saloon, coupe and SW. Like i always say, "Don't Believe Everything You Read!". Ikenna. |
elektra80: haba Mr ikenna... 40mpg on a 2000 model peugoet 406 v6. Nbanu, that's not possible unless its diesel powered. Abeg find another thing talk. Can you please show us the proof where Peugeot stated that the ES9J4S, V6 engine in 406 V6 D9, gives 29 mpg on highway ? Because am staring at my owners manual that came with the car right now. As for others who would like to know, the car owners manual states that for my 2000 406 V6 5-speed manual, 8BXFX, Saloon, the fuel consumption details is as below: Urban driving: 20.6 mpg (13.7 L/100 km). Inter-Urban: 39.2 mpg (7.2 L/100km ). Mixed driving: 29.4 mpg (9.6 L/100 km). Note that the above is mpg for the car when the engine has not run-in or break in. Meaning, the mpg could improve more than stated above when broken-in, since the engine has loosen up. Now electra80, since when did mixed driving becomes inter-urban driving? So are you the one to tell me how my car consumes fuel, irrespective of what the computer says? So am so daft that i don't know how i fill up and how the fuel gauge drops with distance i cover with it? Why do you find it so had to believe ? Because it's not Toyota and its a French car? If your car manufacturer deceives you about what they stated about your car fuel consumption figures, does it mean every other car manufacturer does? Meanwhile, your orientation about old cars is not encouraging. So to you, as car ages, the fuel consumption increases? Unbelievable ! By the way, that engine in 406 V6 D9, ES9J4S, was co-produced by Peugeot, Renault & Porsche. So, you need to know what is under that hood before you comment on it. Probably, you thought i was the only one that drives 406 V6 D9? And you thought Nairaland Car Talk is the only Arena Peugeots are discussed? As luck would have it, this 406 V6 fuel economy was recently discussed in aussiefrogs last month by other 406 V6 owners like myself in Australia. Find the discussion in the link below: http://www.aussiefrogs.com/forum/peugeot-forum/106597-v6-economy.html Ikenna. |
kadbus: Good day house,Cleaning of throttle body? It will take me the whole evening to describe it here. But it's a simple DIY stuff. I believe you will find bow to do it via google. I don't think you need to do any other thing after cleaning the TB. Just install back a new airfilter. Ikenna. |
aejaywhite: ikenna i finally fixed the problems. thanks for ur concernCongrats ! Ikenna. |
Hmm! Some people fail to realise that am one of those that wouldn't mind the low resale value of Euro cars, because i benefit from it. Ask me why? Guess how much i bought my tokunbo 406 V6 SV D9 early this year? A lot of Nairaland members have visited me and when i show them the car and tell them how much i bought her, none of them would believe me. I bought her almost the amount i bought my Baby in 2010. This car was shipped from Hamburg and arrived Lagos port in November last year. According to the importer, everyone looked the other way once they see the V6 badge and also because it's not Toyota. I was the only one who seriously indicated interest months later and he had no option than to not let me pass him by. Yet, this is a car i can tell you some I4 Japs can't match in fuel economy. On my way back from Church on Sunday, on Expressway, i used Cruise control for the first time. I first tried 120 km/h, the car at that speed averaged about 7.7 L/100km (39+ mpg). Again, i cancelled the speed control and set it at 100 km/h, the car was getting about 6.4 L/100km. And this is a 2000 production. How many V6 and I4 Japs of the same year model can boast of that consumption ? Note that i got the car at mileage 166,000 km. Now the mileae is over 170k km, yet the engine still drives like new. I don't even accelerate to move from stand still. All i do is gradually relaese the clutch and the car moves smoothly, no jecking or loss of power. Doubt me? Come over and test. I recall when some members posted negatively about 406 electrics, claiming that as soon as the cross 100k km, their electrics become nightmares to their owners. They will start falling apart. Mine is 170k km, everything still function as new. I wonder who is to be blamed. The abused poor car, the owner or the clown that did that omen on the poor car? For those that stay in Abuja, you will bear me witness that Peugeot cars are increasing on Abuja road on daily basis. Parastatal, other govt agencies and paramilitaries are now ditching their Toyotas and switching to Peugeots (408 & 508) as official cars. Privates are not lef out. Even Peugeot Crossovers ( 3008 & 4008) are increasing on the road. People don dey sabi beta thing! So, the low resale value favours me abeg. After all, i don't buy to resale tomorrow. But buy to drive till it falls apart. Who knows, the low resale value fit make me become 508 owner sooner than i expect. Who knows! Ikenna. |
Simply put; Just imagine dust and sand sucked up into your throttle body and further into the injectors-and trust me this will happen. Why would you want to drive your car without an air filter which (if I remember rightly from my Pug Days) cost just about N1,500. NA you dey find trouble o. Don't come and complain about how Pugs are problematic cars later.
Not just the throttle body, those dust and sand will pass the throttle body, pass the intake manifold, pass the intake valves and rest inside the combustion chambers? Guess what will happen? Those dust and sand will eat up your rings, pistons, cylinder walls or piston liners/sleeves. The first symptom will be smoke, next will be engine failure. It's upto you. Ikenna. |
bravolad: I don't think the op heeds to advice. He's been advised by several people to revert to status quo but he prefers to live with this problem and continues to suffer. Apparently, the cost of keeping this van in the current condition will be high as against getting a dodge 3.0l engine.Sometimes, i say the bitter truth, without sweetening the words, the way i see it, which some people do find harsh. In the OP case, i did it, not because of what he did, but why he did what he did. Nigerians are always victims of Bandwagon propaganda : Everyone does it or says this. You will always hear "V6s are gaz guzzlers and very problematic, convert the car to I4 for peace of mind". Also, "Other than Toyota, the rest are unreliable ". Now, one would want want to drive Toyota with Dodge badge. Because if you remove engine and transmission, wetin remain? Op did this conversion because of the 2 i mentioned above. Let him prove me wrong. Because i dont want to believe the original V6 in that car is not available in ladipo, even if replacing the engine was the only solution to the car issues that lead to this conversion. Normally, people upgrade their cars by modifying and installing high performance components to boost the power of their engine. Others would upgrade by swapping in a bigger or more powerful engine . But downgrading? It doesn't make sense at all. Instead, one should simply sell his/her car and buy one with smaller engine, if he/she wants to go green. After all, we now have 3 cylinder engines in various cars of various brands. I would advice anyone who might want to or planning to do what Op has done, swap in a fuel carburetted engine instead. It may not run efficiently, but it wont be close to what Op is experiencing now. Ikenna. |
