Some UK universities will give you direct Msc with your HND if you have a CGPA of atleast 3.0 out of 4 points and a minimum credit load of 120. They will take it as the equivalent of a honors Degree; after all in some countries like Ireland an Advanced Diploma is higher than a bachelor's Degree and they still recognise it, while in Nigeria an Advanced Diploma is not up to a Higher National Diploma or Bachelor's Degree. |
Hnd-holder:You are correct. But Nigerians may begin to look at it that it is the handi work of polytechnic graduates, trust Nigerians; any thing bad goes to polytechnics and their HND graduates. |
Yes most people who develop high BP in Nigeria are holders of HND certificates. |
@maxell well said jo. God bless you. Some people are trying to discourage people with Nigerian HND from going further. |
Hnd-holder:yes you are right. Let them convert polytechnics to polytechnic universities, that is when Nigerians will appreciate anything that comes out of there. |
Trust in God there is hope. With your Nigerian HND the sky is your limit because you posses what university Bsc holders do not have. |
@Hnd-holder pls say something about this topic. HND-holder started from HND and now he has a PhD you can ask him. |
Hnd-holder:Honestly you are very correct. Let HND die, but let the polytechnics continue to exist and let everybody go for Bsc or BTech. Nigerians and employers in Nigeria hate that name HND. |
But will they agree?? They hate the name HND and they look at it the same way British look at their HND now; you know UK HND is less than a Bachelor's Degree. |
Hnd-holder:Very low honestly. i doubt if it's up to 120 credit hours sef. |
and how many organisations in nigeria give HND holders the opportunity or chance to come and prove themselves?? are you saying that those HND holders who were turned down by banks and other multi-national companies could not defend their HND certificates?? What about those who got into the civil service and were discriminated by placing them below people with Bsc, are you saying that they too could nt defend their HND certificates?? What about those that apply for Master's Degree programs in the universities in Nigeria and are denied admission because they have HND, or are asked to do a PGD first or start from 300 levels again, are they also incompetent HND holders?? so with all what HND holders in nigeria have been going through you still advice people to go to polytechnic and do HND?? Nobody is saying that polytechnics and HND programs don't give and equip people with knowledge and skills better than universities and Bsc programs, but it becomes a waste of time, effort and resources when you are not recognised with the skills and knowledge you have. Why not advice people to go for Bsc programs since that is what employers and people of the country recognise and want. My brothers and sisters i advice you all for your own health and security to patronize universities and their Bsc programs and leave polytechnics and their HND programs alone |
With your HND you have the option of going further to get academic Degrees upto PhD level, or look for professional qualifications like MBA, MPA etc. But i still advice you to get a Bsc. But if already you have HND there is no wahala you can still make it to PhD Level. |
@Hnd-holder In the UK they look down at HND certificate because they spend just 2 years to acquire it without carrying out a research project, while Bsc guys spend 3 years and carry out a research project. Can't somebody explain to Nigerians that HND in nigeria requires you to spend atleast 5 years and you must carryout research projects after your first 2 years (ND) and in your final year HNDII?? HND certificate is equivalent to a Degree in Nigeria but because of it's irrelevance in the UK nigerians started looking down at it here too. |
@Hnd-holder HND is a stressful qualification in nigeria. one can even get hypertension or high BP if he/she is holding HND certificate. |
Hnd-holder:It's really a waste of time when it comes to using that certificate to get a job and job progression; but not a waste when it comes to the skills and knowledge acquired. |
Don't allow anybody decieve you; Go ahead and do a Bachelor's Degree course, don't go close to any thing HND else you will regret being a Nigerian in future. |
Hnd-holder:i dey tell dem o; only say some of dem no dey gree listen. |
@seun What proverbial said is right but it may not work. I have tried it before but we still ended up not getting into english language becos the OS itself was in german language. I had to reinstall the OS in english language. Cyras is right. Seun if you have a solution better than proverbial then let us know. |
proverbial:Yes you are right: Critical thoughts; and for Critical minds only. |
where are u? i'm still waiting for u to respond. |

Gaybriel:I am not studying mathematics now, but i read mathematics/statistics. |
My brother, no hope in government o; na God hand HND holders dey for this country. Just keep on praying. Inconsistency in the part of our government is really killing HND holders in Nigeria. some months ago they said no more HND certificate again and that already existing HND is still equivalent to a Degree, but now the same people (government) have reversed the decision of scrapping the HND program that HND programs should still be done in polytechnics. Polytechnic education in Nigeria is a waste of time, effort and resources. |
Kashif:Not true. Who said so?? Computer scientists can easily become Computer Engineers too. |
Gaybriel:First and foremost, Teaching. You can also work in Banks and other financial institutions. You can also decide to go into Accounting or Information Technology. |
@kitaun My guy longest time. Where you go hide? i no dey see u online again. But HND-holder say FG don reverse the decision on scrapping of HND programs and polytechnics, dats why i'm asking him if YabaTech and Kadpoly will still remain as polytechnics or will go ahead to take university status? |
@Hnd-holder you've not answered my question. what about YabaTech and Kadpoly?? Are they going to still convert them to universties?? or are they going to remain as polytechnics? |
Gaybriel:Critical thinking all the time. Cheers. |
jagalo:In Numerical Analysis?? Are u sure you know what the guy is talking about?? He's talking about Linear programming in Operations Research o! Which school is dat sef? |
Any one they like let them do after all they are the once that announced that it has been scrapped, now they don't want it scrapped again. What i know is that Nigeria can never develop without polytechnics. |
I learnt they have paused the abolishment of HND in nigerian polytechnics. that means ND students can still apply and go for their HND. inconsistencies in our system in nigeria, na wa oo. |
@Hnd-holder what about YabaTech and Kadpoly?? Are they going to still convert them to universties?? or are they going to remain as polytechnics? |
