Culture › Saudi Arabia To Allow First Alcohol Sales In 72 Years, Dividing Opinion by Jasobry(op): 12:09pm On Jan 25, 2024 |
The news that Saudi Arabia will allow its first alcohol shop has citizens and foreigners alike mulling one question: is this a minor policy tweak, or a major upheaval?
Sources familiar with preparations for the store disclosed details of the plan on Wednesday, as a document circulated indicating just how carefully leaders of the teetotal Gulf kingdom will manage its operations.
Located in the capital’s Diplomatic Quarter, the store will be accessible only to non-Muslim diplomats, meaning that for the vast majority of Saudi Arabia’s 32 million people, nothing will change for now. Yet like other diners at LPM, the businessman declined to be named, highlighting the sensitivity surrounding anything related to alcohol – which is banned in Islam – in the country that is home to the Muslim holy places of Mecca and Medina.
At another table, tucking into an order of hazelnut tiramisu, two Saudi men in their 30s said they worried about what the sale of alcohol would mean for the kingdom’s identity.
“It’s not who we are,” one of the men said.
“It’s not that I have, like, some kind of judgment towards people who drink. No, absolutely not. But having something that is out there affects the culture and the community.”
He added: “Let’s say if I have a younger sibling, if alcohol is out there, there is a possibility that he will become an alcoholic.”
His friend chimed in to say that he would prefer that people continue to go abroad to drink, as many do currently. It’s just scary that they’re allowing such things into [the country]. Any individual that wants to try alcohol, it’s literally an hour by plane away,” he said.
“Everybody travels here. It’s easily accessible. But what I want to say is that in this jurisdiction, I’m not happy that it’s allowed.”
Under his Vision 2030 reform agenda, Saudi Arabia’s de facto ruler, crown prince Mohammed bin Salman, is trying to turn the world’s biggest crude exporter into a business, sports and tourism hub that can prosper in an eventual post-oil era.
That requires luring more foreigners, and permitting alcohol “in stages” could play a role in that, said Kristin Diwan, of the Arab Gulf States Institute in Washington.
“This is one more step in normalising government sanction of alcohol in defined settings,” she said. |
Travel › Re: Canadian Student Visa Thread Part 23 by Jasobry: 6:28am On Jan 24, 2024 |
The Canadian Federal government announcement regarding the imposition of international student enrollment caps has created a great deal of uncertainty for the Fleming community, students, staff, faculty, businesses and the broader community we serve.
I want to be very clear that the international students currently enrolled in Fleming at all our campuses including Fleming College Toronto are not affected by this announcement.
However, the new international students that have applied for spring and fall 2024 sessions will be impacted by this announcement.
This announcement has an immense adverse human and economic impact for our region.
It is important to recognize the relationship between international students and our local economies. The implementation of international student caps poses a threat not only to the educational experiences of all of our students but also to the vitality of our regional economy. The economic impact of a 50% reduction of international student enrollment will be a staggering loss to our communities: Peterborough, Lindsay and Haliburton.
The human impact is just as startling.
Fleming prepares people to work in a variety of services, however the impacts would be most pronounced for Early Childhood Education, Personal Support Workers, and Practical Nursing; people who look after our loved ones.
International students that come to Ontario are essential to bringing in top talent for key sectors of the workforce, here in our area and across the province. They usually come with a diploma or degree and are ready to move quickly into the labour market.
Our college graduates contribute to help close some of the largest labour market gaps in Ontario’s key sectors – health care and social assistance, accommodation and food services, automotive, mining, trades and construction, advanced manufacturing and others.
We cannot adequately emphasize the gravity of this rash decision on the people; students, our college, community and local businesses and partnerships.

Politics › Re: Lack Of Electricity How I spend 160,000 naira a Month on fuel? by Jasobry: 12:20pm On Oct 16, 2023 |
TheOldGods: Nobody is talking about the big Elephant in the room, which is lack of electricity. This week I've spent 58,000 naira on fuel for my generator for work, that is full tank for alot of cars every week, and the car owners are complaining, what about us that need Electricity to work.
I barely get 6 hours of electricity, I tried buying solar, but the conditions are too much, turn off this, turn this on, don't use this bulb. Mehn, plus I can't turn on AC while working.
Since my work is from home I decided to buy a laptop worth 1million here on Nairaland (thanks to Nairaland) just to ease my work, atleat I get 4 hours of break in severe heated room with my laptop.
How else can someone survive in this country with this low electricity, is there any state that is better? Or is it a must I have to travel to another African country just to get simple electricity to work. My generator just went off and my fuel gone, that why I came here to rant. I'm going to buy feul at 615 naira per litre Too bad, I can boast of 20 hours light daily in my location. |

Odidigboigbo: If whishes were houses beggars would ride. It's not all about believe but the capacity to deliver in our democratic settings. It was the same way Buhari and his group were down playing GEJ, here they are now in the saddle of responsibility, has they performed better than GEJ? Your comments above indicates that he lacks the capacity to deliver. End of story |

Odidigboigbo: This was the same way Fashola was making mouth up and down that generating 24 hours power in Nigeria is not a rocket science. Fortunately, his party won the election and he was made the minister of power, I think we are enjoying the 24 hours power generated by Fashola after four years as a minister of power. It is easier said than done. It's obvious you don't believe that Enugu state can get water, same way you don't believe that we can have stable power supply. Why did you bother going to school if can't contribute anything meaningful to the world? |

Water board and individuals are trying but nature has it that Water will be scarce .... So your silly talk address it to God and nature ... Ezi Keep shut. Is it a rocket science to distribute water from ninth miles via underground pipes to enugu state metropolis. Dubai is a desert but created an artificial river that can accommodate heavy ships. |

Crime › Enugu: Water On Wheels Is Not Reliable by Jasobry(op): 10:01am On Dec 12, 2021 |
Water on wheels is a water supply company owned by ingrace. The newly launched company claims to deliver water within 24 hours after ordering and payment made.
It's over 72 hours and I'm yet to get my order, despite several calls which they kept promising and stopped picking up.
The regular water supply guys could have delivered without much trouble, but the thought that an online platform will be less stressful was a deceit.
My request for refund has fallen on deaf ears.
I have been making use of sachet water for 3 days with my kids.
Ingrace is a disgrace |

You’ll be better off with a wire mesh than 10mm for reinforcement.
