Christianity EtcRe: Are Large/Mega-churches Biblical? How Large Is A Church Supposed To Be? by JeSoul(op): 6:04pm On Apr 12, 2010
davidylan:
This is one of the reasons i now attend my church quite infrequently.

Large churches make close-knit christian fellowships and bible studies impossible. Large churches today are no different from movie theatres . . . you go in, watch a 30 min concert that you dont participate in, listen to a 20 min motivational speech where you're not required to own a bible as the verses are put up on a screen for your convenience. Pay your usual gate fee (tithes and offerings) then leave.

Where is the place for searching the scriptures? What if you had burning questions to ask? where is the place for exhorting one another? Where is the opportunity to share testimonies that bolster the faith of others?
This was funny . . .

. . . until I remembered a church website I stumbled on a year ago. They actually meet at a movie theatre on sundays and encourage coffee and popcorn while the service goes on. They "preach/teach" using mostly videos so it's all movie-themed. I'll try to search and see if I can find that website.

Its a growing trend of "Alternative Churches" that are popping up all over the place. If I tell you of some of the places I've been to and stuff I've seen/heard, you will weep for American churches.

why do u consider them strangers?
Because we may attend the same church, but I don't know them outside of church. I am not "friends" with them. And I do not go to the houses of people I don't know - whether or not they claim to be christians.

However, practically every sat night, a group of us/my friends meet. Sometimes to hang out, watch a movie, sometimes to have bible study, sometimes to have dinner, sometimes a birthday party for one of us, sometimes a discussion, sometimes we invite an older person to share etc . . . this group of friends are the ones I truly consider my "church family".

aisha2:
I believe that is what Home cells and Care groups are meant to address. If we say Churches should not have more than 5o members then we will have many more churches than we have now crowding the place
. . . but if they were meeting in their houses (like my friends and I do) there wouldn't be any need for extra physical structures that cost money to build and maintain.

See . . .
KunleOshob:
The large size of churches we have today actually don't have any scriptural basis, however i would not condem it as wrong but true fellowship is lacking in churches of such large size. In the early churches they used to share meals, there was always feasting which formed an essential part of the fellowship but today it is completely missing except for the occassional holy communion were tiny rations of bread and "wine"[as opposed to full meals] are given out in observation of Jesus commandment. The mordern church as tried to re-enact the close knit fellowship which the early church had through house fellowships and house cells but the sharing of meals is mostly missing in these fellowships and some of them still collect "offerings" which they re-mit to the church for what ever purpose. But large congregations [not churches] are not entirely unscriptural as Jesus used to have several open air sermons in which thousands were recorded to attend. A very obvious example was when Jesus fed 5,000 men after one of his sermons. In summary i won't condenm large church congregations as long as they provide a platform for true fellowship, but then again large congregations are unnecessary as i don't see any benefit in it for the congregation themselves apart from the intituitional church that stands to make more money from a larger congregation.
My church of about 1000+ also has these house fellowships. But I have never gone for a single one. I don't go to the house of "strangers" (and my use of the key word "strangers" should very telling).

Kunle thank you for that response. I agree completely with everything you said there. Very well spoken sir.
Here i was sitting quietly in my office until my life was altered due to something silly my supposedly fiancee wrote exposing ourlives for no just cause and setting me up for christians who dont know me to insult me to the highest heavens. If she even spoke to me about this, i wont be this demoralized and shakey at work reading all these evil statements made by people calling me this things. Why would she go this far to do it. And your saying i shouldnt blame her. You all forget the 6 pages of insults that strangers from no where have been pouring on me and the people that know me reading this. How far this write up would go is something else. From all your advices she is getting married to a devil because i am not a christian, why should i just let her be in peace since that would stop all these slanderous statements and let me be. We have done so many things together as a couple and this issue of the christian or no christian thing has never cropped up until now on the internet. How would you feel if it were you that you just woke up one morning and found your life being the centre of the storm for no just cause. Do you guys forget things easily? Have you not gone through all the name calling and atheist bashing due to her story. Why should she do this and your telling me i should chill and am childish because she praised me. What sort of praise is that? If she truely loved me why should she lay me out bare for people to castigate me because of my views and these people dont even know me. What sort of advice is she looking for that we havent weathered together for 4 years and we are still going on. In fact what ever. Am done with this episode. Whatever. I will fulfill her wishes so that this castigations will end and i will be in peace. Because there is no way i can ever forgive her for this humilation and if we are even together back, this issue will now truely rise every now and then. It was never an issue to me but it will now be an issue to me. I will have to accept that religious discrimination is truely alive and i am an endangered specie because of my views. I was deluded it will work and was planning to make sure it works to prove people wrong. I accept i was betting on the wrong horse and for those insulting Labake, she has done more for me today that i could imagine. Showing me this website makes me appreciate her more. I could have continued living a false life with Sia and not knowing she had the capacity to stab me in front of strangers. Now i know better and who i can truely call my friends
I feel so sorry for you cos its obvious this thread has deeply hurt you. I know you've already gotten an ear full but pardon me to say a few . . .

You have every right to be upset, because I also agree these kinds of issues should be private and not broadcast in a public forum. Your girlfriend made a mistake, a bad mistake. But I do not think her intention was to hurt you. Like others have stated, she has done nothing but praise you and speak very highly of you and say how much she loves you - is this not evidence enough that she did not intend to shame or hurt you? You have every right to be upset, but do not let your hurt and anger blind you from seeing the facts. It wasn't her who insulted you, but strangers. Do not let the words of strangers whom you will never meet, be the determining factor in your life.

We the strangers do not know the labake person, but I can tell you that no "good friend" will immediately jump at an opportunity to "show you" and expose with glee how your fiance has been badmouthing you, because she never even badmouthed you. Beware of false motives. Your girl will undoutedly apologize to you. Take some time and consider things wisely. Cos as far as I'm concerned, this is not a good reason to throw away 4 years of a good relationship away. But hey, I'm just a stranger on the internet.

JeSoul:
InesQor, I find this quote most, most interesting. Can you defend this biblically?
InesQor:
@JeSoul: sorry im mobile now, so my response is delayed. The Greek word "ekklesia" is used to define church, and means "the called out ones", a word that was used for the first church: Moses and the Israelites in the wilderness (Acts 7:38).

Read v39-47 to see how such a large company of called out ones erred because they cooperated in their large numbers to deliver evil counsel. Finish the chapter and see why they killed Stephen in the discourse.

As to fellowship and administration, recall Jethro's advice in Exo 18:21 to break up the group into chunks for better fellowship. Each chunk of 5, 10 as suggested is a Household, so to speak.

Fellowship is, in the Greek, koinonia, a partnership and social intercourse. The definition makes it clear that its not a very large unwieldy body, and the reason I personally say a house, is that, I can see various Biblical patterns of believers meeting in their houses.

I am not excluding meetings larger than houses, though, but each functional unit within the gathering, delivering the power of the gospel and sharing communion must not be larger than a household that is receiving guests. I am not a fan of crusades a la Benny Hinn. Only been to one in my life: Bonnke in 2000 or so. Make it a maximum of 50 to 100 depending on size of available space.

The key thing is that, like parts of the human body must not atrophy, no one should be able to transparently slip by in the meeting and not BOTH gain AND contribute. More questions?

The topic was sparked by this quote from Kunle's thread:
InesQor:
I dont believe any single gathering of believers is meant to be larger than can fit in a house, where great fellowship can be shared and all parts grow. My 2 cents, sir.
https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-282213.352.html#msg5877346

Biblically speaking, how large is a church supposed to be? Is there a limit placed on us by the scriptures? How effective can we be in patterning ourselves after the early church (in matters like communion, taking care of each other etc) if the church is too large? If churches were smaller, would there be a need to collect so much money take care of the physical properties? what are the advantages? or disadvantages?

Pls discuss.

^ hehe, you won't let me plead the 5th on this one?

I have discussed this topic with some friends in the past and I do agree that the "size" most churches are today make it impossible or impractical to mirror - in principle, in action and ultimately in truth - a ton of things the early church did. For example communion. Where I have seen no solid footing is whether it can definitively be biblically said to be flat out wrong - this is where I have questions.

Don't worry about replying. I'm sure others will have their input, you can get to it whenever you can, it will still be there.

As for the God preached by the bible, he has always been distinctly single -

"Hear o Israel, the Lord our God is one God" - Deut. 6:4.
Deepsight, you quote that verse^. And if you were a christian or had the help of the holy spirit, you would immediately recognize that it does not for a nanosecond, stand in contradiction to the Trinity doctrine.

You questioned where the Trinity is "even hinted at" in the bible. I ask you, how would you biblically classify or explain or categorize the relationship between each of these:

- The Father
- Jesus Christ
- The Holy Spirit . . .

1. amongst themselves, and
2. in relation to God almighty

Face value for real. Rom 8:20 - Is it saying God "hopes" in the sense of "having faith something 'out of His control' will come to pass"? or is it saying that in the fallen state of creation, God gave us an out, and in that - hopes* that we will take it? or in short that He gave us hope and wants us to accept it?

I'll not go into that verse,
Please do. If I am wrong, I will like to be shown where and I'm sure others watching/reading would like to know also.

but at least we'll agree that faith is the evidence of things not seen, substance of things hoped for.
Yes - for us, human beings - not God.

I believe God demonstrates and demonstrated this things.
How so? when was God ever shown or even hinted to have "hoped" for anything? or to have not seen anything? or not known anything? Isn't God by definition all-knowing, all-powerful and all-present? Insinuating that He has ever had the need to have faith is to suggest that He is deficient and lacking in absolute authority to carry out any action at any time as He wishes  - that He depends on faith (in who or what is another question) to accomplish His purpose?

God puts His faith in what Image? in who? on what does God depend on? or is He simply God?

And if there is no one greater, how can He have faith in Himself? that's an oxymoron. Why would He need to have faith in Himself? Don't you see the gross contradiction?

The evidence of things not seen, He manifested it calling those things that are not as though they are. I think that is faith. Jesus demonstrated faith and expects us to do same. Well?
My dear it's not enough for us to "think" but to able to back up our thinking with scripture. Also can you please post the verses/places where Jesus demonstrated faith so we can go through those as well? Thanks.
Christianity EtcRe: The Trinity Doctrine Revisited: Is Jesus=God=Holyspirit? by JeSoul(op): 2:45pm On Apr 09, 2010
Deep Sight:
You see what I mean?

How do you know I am not God?
The same way I know Jesus is God - By Faith. And also some basic evidence, can you tell us, if you are God, how you created the universe? This may be a wild assumption, but I'm pretty sure you can't.

1. You admit that "spiritual matters fly over our heads". . . thus you cannot tell affirmatively that I am not God. The best you can say is that you do not know if I am in fact God - because it is a matter you have admitted transcends human understanding.

2. Your grim assurance that I am not God derives from the fact that you know I am a man: In this i put it squarely to your face that if you lived in Jesus' time and sat next to him and knew him the way you know me as a man - you would posess the same grim certainty that he was simply another man - and not the Almighty Creator. It would sound ridiculous to you - and it is only acceptable in your ears now because it is removed from you by the passage of time and the force of Church history has made it sound acceptable to call a fellow human being the Almighty creator.

3. Do not even dare point to miracles because there are people performing miracles today, just as others performed miracles back then - and you do not therefore accept any of them as God do you?
1. No actually. The best I can tell myself is that you are not God (faith again). What you believe about yourself or what anyone else believes about your person is of zero significance - to me - and vice versa. These matters are intensely and thoroughly personal and should be treated as such. My faith was never meant to be projected and become proof for others to use to build their own belief and vice versa.
and the best you can subsequently say is the Trinity is false- by your own faith, but you do not subscribe to faith-based anything do you? Oh prophet of OOI?  grin

2. It is written that Jesus did and said things that set Him worlds apart from the other wannabes in His day. Whether or not you or I choose to believe the account is the issue. I have chosen to believe.

And by the way, i do perform miracles.
hehe, talk is cheap, show us . . .

^^^
Let me put something to you.

Has it ever occurred to you that the real question is not -

- Could it be the case that such a thing as the Trinity can exist?

But -

- Does it in fact exist?

Could Jesus be God? Its possible. Anything is possible since our knowledge is limited. I might be God too. You cannot claim that you know everything - so it is possible that I too am God - and that this transcends your knowledge or understanding.

So the correct question in fact should be - Is Jesus in fact God? Is Deep Sight in fact God?

And not an explanation of how it could be possible. Because we already know anything might be possible.
Q1 is the first step, could it exist? you've admitted yes it can.

Now, whether or not the probability of its existence is high or low is insignificant to the fact that it can infact exist. Especially since it is a spiritual matter, and we know spiritual matters frequently fly over our heads and are not necessarily deduced by established laws of reasoning.

and btw, I know you are not God beyond all doubt, how many miracles have you done lately? grin

Let me ask you particularly if you are aware of the origin of the doctrine of the trinity.
I am aware of some of the beef that took place when it was being duked out by the early Catholics. Whether or not to include it as an official doctrine etc etc . . . my belief of it is not based on anything man has said or done. I see it in the scriptures - that is why I believe it.

I don't think there's anything wrong with the scriptures quoted. Hebrews 11v3 says God created the world through faith. The passages quoted above also imply the same. I don't think we should say it is wrong simply because so and so is the one saying it.
No my brother, that is not what it says.

Heb 11:3 By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God's command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.

It is saying, we have no proof God created the universe, but by Faith we understand and believe that it was created by God. Furthermore, it says "created at God's command" - not created "by God's faith".

Well, I sort of feel uneasy about Athanasius', because I think we cannot do better than what is written in scripture.
Well said and indeed we cannot. However . . .

the diagram shows four nodes, which seems to detract from the unity of God. Much like the family of Smith, comprising John, Jane and John Jnr: All separate and distinct but all of them Smith (sort of like the Mormon concept of God). See. . .
I see what you mean and its a valid point. However I think you may be approaching it a bit too intellectually. I don't see it as four nodes at all, but more like three, all connected at the core centre, branching out and assuming different manisfestations as some have commonly put it. The Holy Spirit is not Jesus, but yet He is - The Father is not the Son, but yet again, He is - because they are all God.

I know this will be confusing for non-christians especially. I was hoping for common ground from both sides of "Jesus is/isn't God" (some of which are yet to show up), but going from Deepsight's stand, I'm taking a wild guess it will not happen  smiley
Christianity EtcRe: Did God Need Faith To Create The World? by JeSoul(f): 1:04pm On Apr 09, 2010
hmm . . . Rhapsody people.

-If God needed faith to create the world, who did He place this faith in? or what did He place His faith on? since there is no one greater  huh

-Furthermore, faith is scripturally defined as the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Does God "hope"? or does He declare and it comes to pass? is there anything God does not see? that He has to envision them somehow happening in the future? or did He infact create all things? and knows the past, present and future? and even works all things together to bring about His will and purpose?

The notion that God has faith or operates Himself by faith . . . simply ridiculous. Faith in what? in who? He is God!

aletheia:
I came across this entry of March 4, 2010 in Rhapsody of Realities.

My questions are:
1. Do these scriptures support the view that God operates by faith?
Yes they support them indeed. Once they've been twisted and forced into the pre-existing idea.

2. Is faith then a force that we can tap into for results, just as God does?
Lol, if there is a huge faith reserve somewhere that even God Himself needs to tap into in order to bring about anything, surely the bible would clearly mention it?

btw Aletheia I know these are not your views

If your diagram is taken as proof of the doctrine of trinity (as DeepSight seems to see it) then it is flawed because I could as well provide a four-sided or five-sided polygon showing a "quadrinity" or "pentanity". As an illustration, I am sorry to say that my opinion is that it is inadequate.
Proof ke? by no means at all lol.

It is meant to be an illustration that attempts to visually describe the trinity doctrine. I was hoping those on both sides may agree on something. So, no-o, not proof at all. And I don't think this "quadrinity" or "pentanity" can be biblically supported as this Trinity diagram can . . . abi I miss something? lol

-The first diagram is The Athanasian Creed, generally thought to have been penned by Athanasius of Alexandria, a catholic theologian
from around 300AD. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Athanasian_Creed)

-The second diagram is more of a modern/numerical spin-off from the original that I think helps illustrate the point further.

I think we can all agree that there are verses that have been used for and against the trinity doctrine. Can we come to an accord that the above may satisfy both camps?
