It depends. Who are the other candidates?
cos I'll take a gay, atheist or idol head whose record has shown a genuine care and concern for his/her people over a 'christian' whose record show zero accomplishments while they loot and pad their pockets.

Pastor AIO:
Do you want to drive Huxley away?  If he got intelligent responses he will flee.  I'm still awaiting his feedback on so many threads that he's started.  some many months ago which he actually even promised to get back to me on but thank God I didn't hold my breath, or I'd be dead by now.

The one that especially pains me is the Thread about Paul Kurtz whom he was worshipping as a Great humanist.  I actually spent up to 2 hours listening to the link and responding point by point.  It makes me feel like a total idiot that I bothered.  However my attitude to Huxley is that the issues that he raises will actually help to strengthen Faith if you considered them properly.  They will help to get rid of some unsound notions that we all harbour from time to time.  Kind of like a trial by fire, once the gold has been through it it will come out purer.

I am actually respectful of Healthy skepticism and if someone tells me that they are atheists due to some argument or the other, I am happy to consider the arguments with them.  However Huxley's position is different.  His starting point is a bias.  The arguments against religion then come after the bias has been established.  So he will use any argument he feels that will help his case and if the argument fails or is disproved he will quickly drop it and run to another one.  The funny thing though is that a few months later he will return to that discredited argument probably in the hope that others have forgotten that it doesn't hold water.

After a while of him running away from his own arguments I got to starting off by asking him if he was endorsing what was said on the link or not.  Cautiously he was say that he is just presenting it as an interesting viewpoint and that he doesn't necessarily endorse it.  I wonder in fact if he has ever had an original opinion of his own voiced on this forum.  Or maybe not in his life sef.

I agree with noetic that it is important to engage with everything that he says because this is a public forum.  The people who are actually contributing to this forum are not the tip of the iceberg of the people who are reading it everyday.  Possibly those can be numbered in the hundreds of thousands everyday.  It is important to be aware of that when we are making posts.  You are not just addressing the person that you are responding to.  It seems that sometimes some of us argue just for the sake of winning that particular argument not realising that it is just a small battle in a greater war plan.  If for the sake of winning a debate you resort to all sorts of illogicalities it will have far flung repercussions because there are intelligent people reading these posts everyday who are not getting involved but they are forming opinions from what is being said.  Someone has even doubted whether he can possibly go back to 9ja at all after witnessing how easily a discussion can degenerate into mudslinging and name calling.   Not to mention the excessive use of ad hominems and other stupid arguing devices.  He said it reminded him of being back in primary school in the playground where kids will be yabbing each other.  The only difference is that these are grown ups and worse still the entire country is like this.
AIO, I always wondered why you bothered with his posts. ^^ explains it.

Don't be suprised he never returns back to threads when solid answers are given to him . . . that was my experience when he first came on NL, when I saw that he wouldn't stick around long enough to finish the thread and respond, it reeked of intellectual dishonesty and emotional bias and I stopped patronizing his threads. Some of the other atheists around open threads and are at least honest and follow thru. Which is more than I can say for therationa tpaine huxley

Like you said healthy skepticism is good, but when the skeptic is obsessed and biased from the get-go, any "discussion" seems to me like an exercise in futility. You make a very good point that others reading may benefit from engaging him . . . that's why I thank God for you and your patience to do just that  kiss

True. And if I had to pick fancy over championships . . . the answer is easy, gimme the rings! smiley

I have not written the Suns off yet ooh! If we finish 8th we might as well not bother to go for the playoffs they still whooped our ass without Bynum so i don't know how we would fare when he gets back as for Shaq i think he is trying to catch Abdul-Jabbar and M.J which is very unlikely but he is fifth all time now i think thats what's driving him because i am sure in his heart of hearts he knows he can't win anymore rings
I dunno. We all assumed him done after last season only for him to drop this season on us. But if he stays with the current roster of suns, there is zero chances of any championships.

Jesoul you do not have to be religious to help the needy. A lot of people help raise money for charity not because the bible say this or the bible says that but because they genuinely want to help them.
I agree 100% with the above.

And I will also add that a lot of people help raise money for charity not because the bible say this or the bible says that but because the love of God inside them drives them to express that love by helping others. I know that's what drives me.

Unlike that very religious country called Nigeria where a pastor will buy $24:8 million on a plane while his congregation are struggling. And as far as am concerned religion is the main problem with Nigeria.
I share your disdain for those pastors, I wished they could all be wiped off the planet for good. Where I part ways with you is when you blanketize the problems in Nigeria as the fault of religion. Nigeria's problems are much more deeper and complex than just false prophets and blind followers.

The masses should forget about all these big prayer conventions at Easter time, gather together and march to Aso Rock cause a riot and demand change. I believe that would they would see a better result than if they just decided to pray.
If I were in Nigeria I would be first in line for this demonstration  smiley.

I think I once said to you that the bible does not advocate prayer divorced from action - actually just the opposite! I pray to God to give me a good life and good health but I also go out and work hard and take care of my body. That attitude and approach is what the bible teaches . . . not the millions of zombies who stay home and in church praying from morning till night and folding their arms doing nothing to change the country or their situation.

Christianity EtcRe: Why Atheists Care About Your Religion by JeSoul(f): 2:44pm On Mar 23, 2009
huxley:
For your information, atheists care first and foremost,  about the majors claims of religion such as;

1)  the existence of a supernatural realm and a god that inhabits that realm

2)  The nature of God and his attributes (otherwise known as the ontology of god)

This is essentially what atheism is suppose to adjudicate on - nothing else.

Now, if you are making a claim fo the existence of an entity, the burden of proof is on you to provide evidence for that entity.  Atheists have no burden of proof on this subject.  Take the following little thought experiment as an example.

Do you believe in the existence of Sussicorn ? By the way, you have every right to ask me about the ontology of Sussicorn.

If you don't, why don't you?   Think of all the other gods that humans have venerated in the past- Zues, Wotan, Appolo, Sango, Thor, etc, etc.  Why don't you believe in any of these gods today?  If you understand why you don't believe in these gods, you would understand why atheist don't believe in your god.
*did not waste my time reading ^^*

I never really used to bother my self about replying messages in the religious section until u came out with your topic called The problem with the atheist. Your topic made me realise the problem that religion was having in Nigeria {my country of origin} If your thinking that i don't care about religion your wrong because i do care. I care because Nigeria is probably the most religious country in the world and at the same time the most corrupt. I care because because over a 100 million people go to church {or any other religious institution} every week they give 10% of their hard earned salary as tithes and in return all they get from thier pastors is false hope. I care because i always get phone calls from back home form my religious relatives and friends begging me to send them money for one thing or another. When i send them the doh they'll be thanking God for using me {the athiest} as an avenue to help them. I care because i also get calls from friends and relatives stressing me coz they want me to help them to leave that religious country and come to {England} this athiest country because nothing dey happen for that religious country. So my dear JeSoul religion affects me financially so just like the girl in the video I care
My brotha you may be suprised to know that a lot of biblical christians share a lot of the sentiments you expressed above. We do care along with you that 'religion' in Naija is for the most part negatively affecting the nation. We do care just as much as you do.

The thing is most atheists throw a blanket and condemn all things christian. So much good, so much work and charity is done by true christians practicing true religion all around the world. But most atheists turn a blind eye to that and instead focus solely on the famous pastors aka wolves in sheeps clothing saying "this is what christianity is". This to me is an intellectually dishonest position, they are obviously mostly emotionally driven and it immediately takes away any credibility from the atheist.

These atheists chanting "death to religion", how many people have they themselves clothed? fed? helped? housed? for these people they supposedly 'care' so much about? I'm not saying they shouldn't condemn wrongdoing when they see it, but the way most of them go about it here on these boards shows their motive is not anything close to compassion or care, but moreso a public show of their unhealthy obsession and hatred for religion.

Besides, how do these players get better if they don't get plays? Sitting on the bench watching cannot really help you play, you gotta feel the ball and be able to control it. Homeboys need to toughen up, mediocre isn't cutting it. Rookie, bench, whatever. . .is Ariza not from the bench? Why is his case different?
I don't doubt you can have a few stars in the NBDL or overseas better than some NBA players. BUT by and large the best players in the world are in the NBA. Bench players esp from the NBDL can get playing time if they impress the coach during practice and make an impact in the short minutes they get in the actual game. Pruitt is not exactly a beacon of hussle, don't get me wrong he's a nice player but not ready to run the ship of a championship team. and he hasn't done himself any favors esp with the recent DUI.

Garnett would also be playing tomorrow. Right now, I don't think Celtics should be worrying about # 1 spot in the east. They already clinched(sp?) to the playoffs, they just gotta worry about controlling their losses and try to keep it minimum as is now which means more wins.
Well said.

I personally believe that KG is the best player on that team but I hate how everyone is fussing over him. I was at first but seriously, he's just one person and if celtics can't win some without him, then I'm really sorry for them. Why are they even in the NBA? B-ball is all about picking up the pace. I understand the whole team thingy but that doesn't mean relying on one person.
The Celtics were fine short term without Garnett, remember they lost only 1 or 2 games over a long stretch. and that even prompted some espn analysts to ask if we were better without KG. You're forgetting we also lost Rondo, Tony Allen, Scal, Davis and that's when we started dropping games. And when you replace these kinds of quality players with uproven untested NBDLers and recent recruits you cannot expect the same winning results.

The only thing is to make sure we are healthy early April. I have 100% confidence in the team when they're at full strength.

People pay church tax? huh shocked
Recognise:
De-baptism movements exist in Catholic countries such as Spain, Italy and Argentina, while Germans are allowed to renounce their baptism officially in order to get out of paying a church tax.
It would appear to be so. I haven't heard of it before myself . . . or maybe its just in Germany? can one of our catholic brethren clarify?
