Well maybe the paper spinned it then cos on BBC it was reported he was about to be retired when he made the claim. All the same most of them have been greedy and guilty of financial profiting by deception and the ones that claimed for a non existent mortgage guilty of fraud.

The positive thing abt this country is there is accountability and these people genuinly feel the sense of shame. In the jungle we come from no single politican has been convicted of fraud or thieving since yaradua came in and it was only a few ribadu himself convicted.
you are tam dyell is actually retired
Retired Father of the House MP Tam Dyell is unrepentant that he claimed £18K - and got £7.8K for three bookcases.
just imagine they publish the claims of our senators and reps.

what the bank managers alone claim in our society will make these guys claim a joke.

i wish there is a whistle blower in the senate, reps, govs, commissioners or the various house of assembly that can give us the claims of these people

KnowAll:
writing off startup cost to make an airport viable is an indication that it is not going to be viable. not to talk of that being cooking the books.

Writing off is part of good govenance and is practised in a lot of big business all over the world. You dont want to give a business to some to run by saying well we start with -$2million dollars now make me some money. What you do is write off the $2million dollars and tell the person you are starting with no debts make this airport profitable.
oga kmowall, i see you live in the UK. can you tell me why the govt still massively subsidise the British rail, london underground, royal mail just to name a few after applying your " write off the $2million dollars and tell the person you are starting with no debts make this airport profitable." policy for years?.

KnowAll:
a new stadium just got built for a team out here(its highly subsidized) i dont know the exact percentage but the tax payers bore the most of the burden. Guess what, they did not write that cost to tax payers off. the team had figured out how to bring in the revenue to help justify the huge subsidy even before they got approval. so you preaching write off to me is simply cooking the books in my opinion

There is noting like cooking the books in a country that requires all these development activities, when a country is putting certain infrastruture in place they are not thinking of viability they are thinking we need an airpot here they build it, we need a train station here they build it, we need a flyover here they build it. They might sell some of these infastrutures in later years just like Heathrow airport, British rail, British airways. When they sell it they will not say we are owing $25 million that debt is now yours they write it off and sell it off just to cut their losses.
what will nigeria benefit from all these write off you are recommending? why not create a mass transport system instead of creating transport for the few?

Nigerians WANT development, but NOT STUPID development. Does that help? What of the one that claimed 18K for a bookshelf , the one that claimed for a non existent mortgage and even produced a bankstatement with a DD to his savings account and termed it the payment for mortgage . That is simply fraud and i am sure he will be prosecuted for it and might be jailed for 1 month oor two months. Jakie smith claimed for second home and was living in her sisters house, hazel blairs also. There is no saint among them i wonder what they will claim if they were in Nigeria they might be on the same page with Ibori.
they didnt say he claimed £18,000. he asked to be permitted to buy a book shelf of that amount. he was the father of the house and so wanted to buy a solid book shelf for his parliamentary books. dont forget most of these books go back to libraries or other source for reference.

you date because

- you can
- you think you don't know the other person well enough

- you want a taste of who you may be about to comit your whole life to.
- you are not sure you can be in a marriage with someone you dont know and grow to love them - so you want to fall in love first
- you are not sure whether you feel strongly enough about the other person to comit to thenm fully
- you want to find out if there are any reasons / habits you may not be able to live with.

Marriage is a life time commitment and it is sacred - i think the earlier our generation start seeing it as this the better for society and all those children who suffer because of broken homes. If it means you date for while to 'be sure' then heck i say DATE - rather than take a vow before God and then break it later just because you find out after 5yrs - he is not the man yout hought he was and you can't change him!! date honestly and openly and it should be to both your benefits
God help us. someone tot at one time they knew hitler enough

I guess, it would be smart to ask so that you know what you're going into - however people lie!!

I personally don't know what the hell he wants to meet up for, and no I'm not scurrying over there. In fact I'm not even planning my schedule around it, he hasn't arranged a date, he only text to say he'll be in town soon and hopes he could see me.

The phone call which will explain more is still to come - if he goes through with it anyway.

Here's my opinion, if he calls, he calls, I'll be frank and listen so I can guess what the meeting's about (but never forget that people lie and can pretend to be genuine).

For all those people who think that for one second I could sleep with my ex. I don't have proof but the next best thing, I just KNOW that it will never happen, to go into details and explain how it just wouldn't is personal, so you either believe me or not.

Who's to say that the exs you met didn't hope to get laid either??

I don't think that my replies imply that, I think they imply that I'm being cautious & careful not to put myself into positions that could increase the likelihood of something that wouldn't happen (if I put myself in a different position) - happening.

e.g. what's the worst that could happen during a walk in the park?? (Hope I don't get kidnapped lol!!)

I'm also trying to get across the idea that I'm human, so I haven't seen this guy in a year, even though the relationship ended really messy and disasterously, I think I'm bound to miss him >>>after he leaves<<< (that's when he's gone, when I can't do anything physical with him) - in the moment when he's around I believe that I'll be fine, I'm impecable with self-control. I have never been in a compromising position that I wasn't able to get out of - to date.

Explain this 'writing off' thing. Why would I write off the cost of an airport?  huh

Even by your estimate, the airport personnel costs would be close to 600,000 a month. What about maintenance costs? What about radar maintenance and navigation aids? What about maintaining fire response crew? Baggage handling?

The airport has to either pay for itself through revenue generated, or lead to economic activity worth more than the cost of building the facility. If it doesn't do either of the above, it is a white elephant.
why maintain when you can let the things rot and write off replacement cost.

you must tailor your prorities according to your situation.

people haven't got their road networks in order, and they are focusing on air travlel.thats foolishness, even more so when you consider several other logistics PHCN, fuel supply etal. the other day i was at kano airport, and the generator did not come up until some 20 minutes before takeoff. plus - how many airlines are even going to bother setting up shop in these obscure areas in the first place?

in project management, before you contemplate embarking on  a project you must conduct a case study detailing the actual benefits/return on investment from the project. ti'm not talking about feasibility studies; with enough money, anything can be done. i'm talking about the best value for your money. most of thses townn are not even hubs/commericail; meccas/tourist destinations, so what exactly are the projected returns?

According to the holy bible, everything in the bible must come to pass, the word of God cannot go unfulfil. This now kept me wondaring and took me to the book of Isaiah 4:1 that says "In that day seven women will take hold of one man and say, We will eat our food and provide our own clothes, only let us be called by your name.Take away our disgrace.". After going through this very particular chapter i started to imagine how it would look like. Now on a personal note, do you think nigerian women would want to have a rival, not just a rival but 6 rivals wit her making 7 women in a house wit a man as his wives, cos even the muslim women are against rivalry not to talk of a christain woman. So do you think this can happen in nigeria??
the word you should be checking is in that day. are you in that day yet?
Isaiah 4 (The Message)

Isaiah 4
1 That will be the day when seven women will gang up on one man, saying, "We'll take care of ourselves,
get our own food and clothes.
Just give us a child. Make us pregnant
so we'll have something to live for!"
it is a future day not today

amplified foot note reads
Footnotes:

1. Isaiah 4:1 Although more male babies are born than female babies, the number of marriageable men in the world is constantly decreasing. Over 57 percent of the enlisted men in World War I became casualties (according to The World Almanac), and the casualties in World War II have been estimated at 33 million. Not counting deaths in the armed forces, the ratio of deaths between males and females was (as of 1960) nine to seven. This had not been true in previous centuries. Isaiah here foresees a time when the ratio between marriageable men and women will be one to seven in Jerusalem.
2. Isaiah 4:3 The Chaldee Translation reads "eternal life."
sadly when the day comes, you will be busy fighting for your life than accepting 7 women.

Man, 35, commits suicide over wife‘s
By Agency Reporter
Published: Wednesday, 20 May 2009

A 35-year-old man, Mr. Sunday Udeh, has allegedly killed himself by drinking a substance suspected to be poison.

The deceased, who hailed from Ebonyi State and a resident of Ekugatai village in Etung Local Government Area of Cross River State, was said to have commited suicide in his room after he had accused his 28-year-old wife, Esther, of having extra-marital affairs in the neighbourhood.

The village head of Agbokim Obiri in Ekugatai clan, Ntufam Daniel Ekuri, while confirming the incident to our correspondent on Tuesday, described it as shocking.

It was gathered that Esther, who was a food hawker, usually returned home late in the night which led to the suspicion by her husband.

Ekuri disclosed that when the late Udeh summoned his wife before the chiefs’ council, investigations were conducted and she was given a clean bill of health. http://www.punchng.com/Articl.aspx?theartic=Art20090520050212

Why we withdrew cars from LG bosses’ wives — Osun speaker
By Tunde Odesola, Osogbo
Published: Wednesday, 20 May 2009

The quest for accountability and probity in the utilisation of public resources was the reason the Osun State House of Assembly ordered the withdrawal of 30 brand new cars from the wives of local government chairmen in the state.

This was disclosed by the Speaker, Osun State House of Assembly, Chief Adejare Bello, in a statement by the Press Secretary, Mr. Olumide Ajayi, on Tuesday in Osogbo.

The House on Monday gave a seven-day ultimatum to the wives of the chairmen to return the vehicles worth N105m.

At a plenary, the lawmakers ordered the transfer of the Brilliance brand of cars worth N3.5m each to the women development units of each of the 30 local government councils in the state.

Each of the cars has an official driver attached to it for the council chairmen’s wives.

The House last week said it was wrong of the women to have official cars and drivers without holding elective posts.

Each member of the House of Assembly has a Brilliance car as official vehicle and an official driver.

Bello, who presided over the plenary, maintained that the House would not lose focus of its oversight functions, which included ensuring judicial spending of money from public treasury.

The motion for the withdrawal of the vehicles was moved by Mr. Diran Ayanbeku, a member of Peoples Democratic Party, who represents Ife-South.

A member of the Action Congress, Mr. Adegboye Akintunde, who represents Osogbo, seconded the motion.

Directing that “Women Development Union” should be written on the vehicles, the House said the vehicles should be used by the WDUs in the local government councils.

The Chairman, Association of Local Governments of Nigeria, Osun State, Alhaji Teslim Igbalaye, who appeared before the House last week, affirmed that the vehicles were brought for the WDUs.

Igbalaye, who is the Chairman, Osogbo Local Government Council, absolved the ALGON of blame in the alleged conversion of the vehicles to personal use. http://www.punchng.com/Articl.aspx?theartic=Art20090520055170

I am with Aisha2 on this one.

I generally would not advise spouses to be sneaky behind each other, but because of the history between you and your husband, getting a property in Nigeria should be put on the backburner for now, so I would strongly advise you to;

1) Open a bank account in Nigeria preferably one with access to online facilities so that you can check your balance at work,

2) Start increasing the money you send home to your parent and tell them to pay some of this money into your account, some families are one kain with money so kinda threaten them that if they do not pay in the money, they should not expect anymore from you.

Implementing this advise would mean that your husband would not be able to carry out his threat of seizing your salary.

And on behalf of Nairaland, I would like to say our thoughts are with you and hope you and your husband would be able to resolve your issues and wish you many happy married years ahead wink
why are nigerian relationships almost like pressure cookers? i dont know how much this lady has and how long it will take her to build the house but i find the idea of the idea of marriage of convinience we enjoy or do i say endure very sad.
i always wonder why some nigerian husband and wife have 2 different phone lines in one flat. where is the power of unity, trust and team building in our families? Edo: 50 accident victims get mass burial
By Fidelis Soriwei, Benin
Published: Saturday, 16 May 2009

The university town of Ekpoma in Esan West Local Government Area was thrown into tears, wailing and agony, as another fatal road accident claimed not less than 50 people in the early hours of Friday.

The deceased who were given a mass burial in Benin on Friday evening, were in an EKESON Limited luxury bus on their way to Onitsha when the bus rammed into a stationery tanker loaded with diesel between Ekpoma and Irrua in Edo State.

According to an eyewitness account, the impact of the crash made the tanker to catch fire, burst into flames, the fire engulfed the bus, leading to the death of virtually all the passengers except five.

The accident occurred barely two weeks after 14 market women were killed in an accident which happened at the Ewu area of the same Benin-Auchi Road.

The Zonal Commander of the Federal Roads Safety Commission in Benin, Alhaji Zakari Nda, who confirmed the gory incident to our correspondent on Friday, said it was difficult for him to confirm the exact number of people killed in the accident as the vehicle was still burning.

The driver, it was gathered, lost control in the process and the truck somersaulted several times before veering into the bush.

It was learnt that the truck involved in the accident, which happened in the Ondo State area of the highway, was laden with locally brewed gin (ogogoro).

The truck, which took off from a riverine community in Ondo State, apart from conveying drums of ogogoro, was also carrying some passengers heading for Lagos.

An Ore-based driver, who claimed to be part of a rescue team which combed the bush for victims, told our correspondent on the telephone that the accident caused a serious traffic snarl as the road was littered with drums of ogogoro and personal belongings of the victims.

He said, ” The accident was serious so many people died in it and those who were injured had been taken to hospital for treatment.”

Many of the victims were said to be passengers who sat on top of the drums of the local gin

The Divisional Police Officer in Ore, Mr. Abu Olanipekun, who confirmed the accident, said that eight bodies were retrieved from the scene of the accident.

He said that the 20 injured persons were also taken to hospitals in Ore for treatment.

Olanipekun said that casualty figure was high in the accident because the truck was overloaded with passengers apart from the drums.

He added that most of those who sat on top of the drums were thrown overboard as the truck somersaulted.

Meanwhile, a housewife, Mrs. Ranti Abiona, narrowly escaped death when her Toyota car was crushed by a train in Ola-Iya area of Osogbo, the Osun State capital, on Monday.

Abiona, a former staff of United Bank for Africa, Osogbo branch, who spoke with our correspondent on Tuesday, said she passed out when her vehicle was crushed by the train.

According to her, there was no railway official to alert passersby and commuters about the approach of the train at the Ola-Iya intersection when the accident occurred.

She said, ”I was rushed to the hospital by some Good Samaritans. I do not know what would have happened to my daughter if she was in the car with me because the train hit the car from the front passenger side.”

The Ola-Iya intersection has become a deathtrap for members of the public who are always oblivious of the approach of trains as there is no official of the Nigeria Railway Corporation to alert the people.

There are no reflective lights and gates to stop the people and vehicles from crossing the intersection when a train approaches.

About six persons have been injured by oncoming trains at the intersection since the beginning of the year.

An Osogbo magistrate‘s court, two years ago, ordered the NRC to deploy an official in the intersection to alert passersby and vehicles to oncoming trains.

A victim, who narrowly escaped being crushed in his Mercedes Benz car by a train, Mr. Tunde Mudashiru, had told the court that there was nothing to herald the approach of a train.

Mudashiru, an employee of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria, told the court, presided over by Mr Jide Falola, that the train dragged him in his car along the track for more than 1, 000 metres.  http://www.punchng.com/Articl.aspx?theartic=Art200905134513418

In 2006 when I joined this forum there was a thread on the militants in the niger delta that had kidnapped  foreign oil workers and some people were "hailing them".I told them that sooner or later these idiots would run out of white people to kidnap and start kidnapping their own people little did I know that just 2 years later kidnapping would be a profession in Nigeria spanning all the corners of the country such that innocent citizens including grandmothers live in fear of being kidnapped.
Na only God.
go benin and see fear. what we have turned ourselves into is unbelievable. you are not even safe in church now.
