Nigerian man jailed over ID fraud scam
23/ 1/2009
A NIGERIAN man who came into the UK on a student visa and moved into a home in Warlingham has been jailed for 21 months for his part in a multi-million pound identity fraud scam.
Samuel Abioje, 23, formerly of Hamsey Green Gardens, was found guilty of VAT offences following a three-week trial at Woolwich Crown Court and was sentenced on Thursday.
He and another man - Gbenga Abimbola, 32, formerly of Oslac Road, Catford, south-east London - were both charged with conspiracy to obtain tax credits and VAT repayments contrary to the Criminal Law Act 1977.
Abimola pleaded guilty to both offences and was jailed for four years. Abioje was acquitted of the tax credit offence.
HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) said a 12-month operation found that information on 900 people had been obtained, with evidence of false tax Self Assessment and VAT claims for bogus companies uncovered by investigators.
False bank accounts were set up to reclaim Gift Aid - the tax that can be claimed back by charities on donations - with cash then withdrawn and either spent or sent to Nigeria.
Nick Burriss, assistant director of criminal investigation for HMRC, said: “This was an organised criminal attack against the taxpayer which sought to ruthlessly abuse tax systems designed to protect some of the most vulnerable members of society, as well as hijacking the identities of hundreds of innocent people to allow the crime to be carried out.
“Our investigations proved they had already stolen £340,000 and were planning to steal a further £5m."
HMRC said investigations were continuing and further arrests were anticipated.
The court recommended Abioje and Abimbola should both be deported at the end of their sentences. UK - Nigeria - Fraud/Imprison Two Nigerian ‘conmen’ jailed in UK over £300,000 ID fraud
APA - London (United Kingdom) Two Nigerian men were jailed Monday in the United Kingdom accused of trying to swindle British tax-payers of millions of pounds by using 700 stolen identities.
Prosecutors told the Woolwich Crown Court in south-east London, that the “fraudsters, Gbenga Abimbola and Samuel Abioje created names from stolen passports and credit cards”.
They then opened a string of bank accounts with the fake IDs and claimed £6 million in tax benefits.
Abimbola, 32, also invented dozens of bogus businesses so that fake VAT refunds could go straight to their accounts, it also emerged.
The duo had succeeded in swindling over £300,000 before crime-stoppers caught up with them.
The London Metropolitan police said their ringleaders – one of them named Aare Akintola, also a Nigerian – are still at large.
Abimbola and Abioje met after arriving in London on student visas from Nigeria in 2005 and 2006 – while the operation was up and running.
Abimbola then passed on hundreds of stolen identities to Abioje, 23, who set up the bank accounts.
Both men were arrested following a tip-off.
Abioje denied fraud but was convicted of conspiring to obtain tax credits and jailed for 21 months.
Abimbola, a resident of Lewisham in south-east London, admitted two tax offences and was jailed for four years.
Judge Peter Murphy told them before a crowded court: “The losses sustained by the public purse were substantial enough. If all the claims had been successful, the potential for loss would have been great”.
The judge further recommended both men to be deported to their native West African country as soon as their combined six years jail term ended.

there is no better beauty than that of an extra ordinary nice and elegant lady.
1 Peter 3:3-4 (New Living Translation)
3 Don’t be concerned about the outward beauty of fancy hairstyles, expensive jewelry, or beautiful clothes.
4 You should clothe yourselves instead with the beauty that comes from within, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is so precious to God.

Politics › Why Corruption Is High In Nigeria -alile by JJYOU(op): 7:50pm On Jan 25, 2009 |
Why corruption is high in Nigeria -AlileFrom Mariam Aleshinloye Agboola, Jos Sunday, January 25, 2009 More Stories on This Section The pioneer Director-General of the Nigeria Stock Exchange (NSE) turned minister of the gospel, Hayford Alile has blamed the high rate of corruption in Nigeria on the forceful take-over of mission schools---both Christian and Muslim---by the military in the 1970s, and subsequent abolition of moral instructions from the nation’s formative schools. Alarmed by the increasing influence of corruption and its negative effect on the nation’s economy, Apostle Alile has concluded plans to host an inter-denominational spiritual summit to tackle the scourge. The summit which is due to hold in three cities in the country in September this year, according to him, is aimed at addressing the root causes of corruption with a view to finding lasting spiritual solutions to them. The spiritual leader of Saint Joseph Chosen Church of God dropped the hint at the end of the church’s latest ordination/consecration service for three apostles and 16 pastors in a ceremony held at the church’s branch in Ute-Okpu, Agbor, Delta State last Sunday. Apostle Alile whose education began in a Muslim school and Catholic Church-owned Loyola College in Ibadan, pointed out that the moral instructions they received in those formative schools helped a great deal to shape their lives, adding that the summit will hold in Benin City, Lagos and Abuja and will be attended by all religious leaders in the country and other stakeholders in the Nigerian project. Among those who made the solemn promise and took the oath of allegiance to the church and humanity include the executive director of Oceanic Bank Plc, Apostles Charles Mekwunye, Emmanuel Nmalagu and John Aziken. Others are Pastors Enoch Igwe, Nwachukwu Ikechiuku, Victor Okuh, Blessed Inekhomon, Ulonnam Onyeulo, Paul Osagiede, David Eleogu, Joseph Nweke, Akpan Okon, Ethelbert Amuzuo. The list also included Pastors Godspower Onyobru, Matthew Okon, Godwin Ojamutuwo, Joshua Emofonmwan and Gregory Osolease. Pastor Solomon Agbontaen was absent because his wife who wanted to be by his side could not secure permission from her work place in the US. Apostle Alile told the new apostles and pastors that they have to leave above board just as God expected them to do as true salt of the earth, adding that they must at all time shine the light of God wherever they find themselves. Said he: “What has taken place today is ordained by God and God expects all of you to shine His light in every nook and cranny your services are required. What is happening today in our world is that most of us are in darkness”. http://www.sunnewsonline.com/webpages/news/national/2009/jan/25/national-25-01-2009-08.htm |

12 But we worship at your throne— eternal, high, and glorious! 13 O Lord, the hope of Israel, [b]all who turn away from you will be disgraced. They will be buried in the dust of the earth, for they have abandoned the Lord, the fountain of living water. 14 O Lord, if you heal me, I will be truly healed; if you save me, I will be truly saved. My praises are for you alone! 15 People scoff at me and say, “What is this ‘message from the Lord’ you talk about? Why don’t your predictions come true?”
jeremiah 17:13 message translation
12-13From early on your Sanctuary was set high, a throne of glory, exalted! O God, you're the hope of Israel. All who leave you end up as fools, Deserters with nothing to show for their lives, who walk off from God, fountain of living waters— and wind up dead! |
