Sports / Re: Nigeria Vs Uruguay - Player Rating by kokosheen(m): 11:48am On Jun 21, 2013
In my opinion, Efe Ambrose cost Nigeria both goals.

1st Goal: Forlan’s hopeful cross into the box was seen by Cavani, Omeruo was marking Logano but had to rush at Cavani.
At this point Efe wasn't marking anyone and just stood like a statute. If Cavani had tried to control the ball, Omeruo would have blocked him off, but he attempted a back leg flick which didn't connect and the ball rolled on to Logano - Efe was still ball watching.
Logano scuffs his shot, deceiving Enyeama and Uruguay scores (I don’t blame Enyeama).

2nd Goal: Musa comes in deep to pick-up the ball, Elderson created space for himself but Musa didn’t pass to him and was dispossessed of the ball – mistake 1.
Mistake 2 is a violation of the Football rule 101 – If your other full-back is in an over lapping position, you stay by the center-line or in direct view of your center halves so as to have good cover should your team lose possession in midfield (especially if the game is balanced and you’re not seriously hunting for a goal). Efe flaunted this basic defending rule and the most painful thing was that he didn’t even make effort to recover his position but was just watching as Forlan utilised the space he created to score (no goal keeper can stop that shot).

I respected Efe at the nation’s cup but grew sceptical after his performances for Celtic at the UEFA Champions league (I thought it was mainly due to fatigue). His performance last night was woeful, and makes me feel his real age should be closer to late 30’s rather than the 24 years football age.

Efe Ambrose rating: 1.0 (the 1 is for showing up for the match).

St.Ola:

Tinubu quit as Treasurer of Mobil Nigeria Limited(Downstream Products Marketing) and not Mobil Producing(Upstream Exploration), to run for the senatorial seat of Lagos West(Ikeja Alimosho Agege Ipaja Ifako-Ijaiye)which he occupied from 1991 to 1993 when Abacha seized power. So as at post 1993, he was in no way still under the services of the Nigerian Mobil PLC, talkless of the global ExxonMobil.

Conditions of service for most IOC's in Nigeria allow for their staff to take career breaks for political appointment, so he could have taken a break from Mobil (quit to the outside world) and returned to his job once the 1991 senate election mandate was truncated.

Also, being part of a political pressure group that U.S. govt. supported indirectly, they could hasten his transfer from MNL to MPL (don't forget Exxon-Mobil is a US coy and their top structure is politically interwoven with the US govt. plans - Iraq (Oil), Kuwait (oil), Saudi (oil) etc.).

Shouldn't you wonder why he hobnobs with President Clinton till date (e.g. Eko Atlantic project) undecided

baby_123: hmm, this can backfire. Some people will keep having kids to take advantage of government generosity. Besides, anything fully done by government in Nigeria, never works. They need to focus on spreading the idea of family planning like some years ago. Aggressive campaigns by doctors and advertisements by government agencies in every way possible is very necessary.

Maternity packs doesn't equate special funding after child birth. Controlling population growth shouldn't mean you let the conceived babies die at birth.

Education & exposure of the citizens is what is needed. Even in Nigeria you can hardly find graduate couples having more than 4 children. Most stick to two.

By the time university education becomes basic, depopulation would naturally set in.

Originalsly: Sounds nice...but what's good for Finland doesn't mean it's good for Nigeria. It's freezing cold for nearly half the year in Finland...would the baby of a poor mother stand a good chance to survive? Finland has a population problem...they hardly make babies and the majority of its citizens are middle aged and older. They are basically encouraging the young people to have children. Nigeria has a majority pretty young population and growing...infact there is a need to slow down the youths from bringing forth more children. Then...the Finns pay hefty taxes to support their social programs...do I have to say more? One man's meat is another man's poison.

What you've just written basically means the government shouldn't do anything to reduce infant-mortality. Do you know what it means to carry another human in a womb for 40 weeks, go through the pain of childbirth and basically lose that baby because basic necessities to give the child a fighting chance doesn't exist?

Mind you, giving maternity packs doesn't equate feeding and clothing the baby for life.

Please, re-read the original write up because the message being passed is very different from what you think.

ichidodo: Well it wasnt the F.G that got them into that state, so i dont see why govt should be involved except provision of quality maternal healthcare service delivery system, security, housing and what not.

At the end of the day, the government is responsible for the wellbeing of its citizens. If by offering the maternity package they would get expectant mothers to go for pre-natal care, the battle of eliminating/reducing infant mortality would be half won.

Also, an expectant mother who doesn't have the income to buy basic necessities wouldn't have to use one old dirty wrapper to cover & dry off a new baby.

Also, its not a must that the items are bought here in Nigeria. I know there're better quality baby items in UK/US but only glitch is freight cost. Even at that, we can discuss with freight forwarders to partner with TEHN on this.
Nairaland / General / Re: Nairaland End Of Year Charity Flight..... by kokosheen(m): 12:49pm On Jun 04, 2013
Hi TEHN admins,

I saw this online and thought it was something we can replicate on a smaller scale:

https://www.nairaland.com/1312937/something-fgn-replicate-why-finnish#16056809

It's all about giving expectant mothers starter boxes which contain clothes, sheets, toys and the box can even be used as a bed. It helped Finland achieve one of the world's lowest infant mortality rates which for Nigeria is a tad on the high side. Apart from infant mortality, it promotes citizen equality and makes it mandatory that mothers attend pre-natal courses.

In my opinion, the body with most to gain with a program like this is the FG but knowing how things here, we might have to wait till the 2nd Niger & 4th Mainland bridges are built first angry

I think TEHN should also look into this by getting an approximate cost of a filled box and ask NLers to pay for some boxes. TEHN can now distribute to expectant mothers where they deem fit.

In my opinion, having a program like this by a state or the federal government is a win-win. It reduces infant mortality rates, promotes citizen equality and makes it mandatory that mothers attend pre-natal courses.

I think TEHN should also look into this at a smaller scale. Someone can get an approximate cost of a box and NLers can pay for some boxes, TEHN should now distribute to expectant mothers where they deem fit.

Something Our FGN Can Replicate: Why Finnish Babies Sleep In Cardboard Boxes

Why Finnish babies sleep in cardboard boxes
By Helena Lee BBC News

For 75 years, Finland's expectant mothers have been given a box by the state. It's like a starter kit of clothes, sheets and toys that can even be used as a bed. And some say it helped Finland achieve one of the world's lowest infant mortality rates.
It's a tradition that dates back to the 1930s and it's designed to give all children in Finland, no matter what background they're from, an equal start in life.
The maternity package - a gift from the government - is available to all expectant mothers.
It contains bodysuits, a sleeping bag, outdoor gear, bathing products for the baby, as well as nappies, bedding and a small mattress.
With the mattress in the bottom, the box becomes a baby's first bed. Many children, from all social backgrounds, have their first naps within the safety of the box's four cardboard walls.
A 1947 maternity pack
Mothers have a choice between taking the box, or a cash grant, currently set at 140 euros, but 95% opt for the box as it's worth much more.
The tradition dates back to 1938. To begin with, the scheme was only available to families on low incomes, but that changed in 1949.
"Not only was it offered to all mothers-to-be but new legislation meant in order to get the grant, or maternity box, they had to visit a doctor or municipal pre-natal clinic before their fourth month of pregnancy," says Heidi Liesivesi, who works at Kela - the Social Insurance Institution of Finland.
So the box provided mothers with what they needed to look after their baby, but it also helped steer pregnant women into the arms of the doctors and nurses of Finland's nascent welfare state.
In the 1930s Finland was a poor country and infant mortality was high - 65 out of 1,000 babies died. But the figures improved rapidly in the decades that followed.
Mika Gissler, a professor at the National Institute for Health and Welfare in Helsinki, gives several reasons for this - the maternity box and pre-natal care for all women in the 1940s, followed in the 60s by a national health insurance system and the central hospital network.
Contents of the box

· Mattress, mattress cover, undersheet, duvet cover, blanket, sleeping bag/quilt
· Box itself doubles as a crib
· Snowsuit, hat, insulated mittens and booties
· Light hooded suit and knitted overalls
· Socks and mittens, knitted hat and balaclava
· Bodysuits, romper suits and leggings in unisex colours and patterns
· Hooded bath towel, nail scissors, hairbrush, toothbrush, bath thermometer, nappy cream, wash cloth
· Cloth nappy set and muslin squares
· Picture book and teething toy
· Bra pads, condoms

Encouraging good parenting has been part of the maternity box policy all along.
"Babies used to sleep in the same bed as their parents and it was recommended that they stop," says Panu Pulma, professor in Finnish and Nordic History at the University of Helsinki. "Including the box as a bed meant people started to let their babies sleep separately from them."

At a certain point, baby bottles and dummies were removed to promote breastfeeding.
"One of the main goals of the whole system was to get women to breastfeed more," Pulma says. And, he adds, "It's happened."
He also thinks including a picture book has had a positive effect, encouraging children to handle books, and, one day, to read.
And in addition to all this, Pulma says, the box is a symbol. A symbol of the idea of equality, and of the importance of children.

Building up his CV by staying in work and combining it with post-graduate study projects him as being able to multi-task and focused. His opportunity of working directly with a major O&G coy in Nigeria will come and this will serve him in good stead.

Do you know that base for an engineer in a O&G major in Nigeria is over $150k per annum? Even if he's a professor in the US, it will be hard getting that kind of pay. Infact, the only countries he'll get that kind of pay is Angola and Iraq.

maclatunji:

Quite simple, his arguments find favour with you for reasons best known to you. However, that does not make them factual.

So far, we have little or no evidence that the Fulani in Nasarawa grazed their cattle on Ombatse farmlands. However, what we do know is that the governor of Nasarawa proscribed Ombatse earlier this year and took steps to arrest their leader because of their Boko Haram-like modus operandi. The police tried to arrest their leader and got ambushed leaving scores of them dead.
Yes, the governor has come out to say he proscribed the group, but what actions has he taken to address the frequent killing of people by marauders?
You can always argue that the first aggressors are not Fulani as they (police/governor) haven’t taken visible action to apprehend them, but who is fooling who in this regard (their actions in Lagos/Ogun/Oyo/Edo/Enugu/Kogi/Benue/Nasarawa states carry the same thread mark).

maclatunji:

The Nasarawa state governor immediately flew to Abuja to report to the Vice President, GEJ was in South Africa.
The governor can fly to Abuja to report the Ombatse group but when whole villages were burnt down and inhabitants killed like flies, only statements that the perpetrators will be found and prosecuted are good enough for the victims

maclatunji:
On Delta state, it is laughable to seek to use tactics of a state where Fulani herdsmen are in serious minority for a state like Nasarawa where their population is much larger. Besides, Fulani do not recognise boundaries. The federal government has to intervene.
Question is why don’t they recognise boundaries Why shouldn’t they Are they blind OR are all other tribes in Nigeria, slaves that must cowl to their whims and caprices?

maclatunji:
Fulani do not integrate with even Hausas, they have their distinct language and social structure, they are loyal to their chiefs.
I wrote that I stayed in the rural north with cattle rearing Fulani and not town ones (normally degenerately referred to as Bororos), so your reference to Hausas is of no essence to this topic. Some don’t even speak Hausa but only Fulfulde and my interaction with them as a Muslim brother left me with some memories that won’t be good to share on a forum like this.
Don’t not mistake your interaction with a town Fulani (whose ancestry is probably mixed with Hausa) as they’re learned, can relate with other cultures and understand the impact of their isolated actions to larger scheme of things (which means their actions/inaction is deliberate with a clear motive).

maclatunji:
Hence, your 'Yoruba Muslim' argument is irrelevant. You are not the only one to have contact with them.
My so called Yoruba Muslim reference is to let you know that religiously, I’ve interacted with them as a brother (as the Quran stipulates that all Muslims are brothers) and unfortunately, I didn’t get the same reaction from some of them (quite frankly, their reaction was violent).

I actually applaud his initiative. Is it until a Nigerian embassy is attacked before he takes proactive action
Also, he's not asking for additional security par se, but his request is for those security personnel assigned to guard the embassy be around to guard it.

I think a circular was sent to all embassies to shore up their security detail.

Good move.

Politics / Re: Ombatse Militiamen Attack Herdsmen Again by kokosheen(m): 5:02pm On May 22, 2013
maclatunji:

@bolded, your ignorance on the matter is obvious, no need to debate with you.

I've respected your posts for a while but disappointed on your stance of picking sections of his argument to dodge a good debate.
You’ve disparaged posters for gloating over the senseless killings and blamed the entire thing on the president (retardeen), while he argues that blame should lie with the state government for not controlling the marauding cattle nomads. He also went further to give an example of a state governor taking action, so why do you refer to him as being ignorant? Wouldn’t it be better to allow logic win him over to your point of view (wetin concern me sef for this argument)
Anyways, my views are that the Fulani herders are too quick to kill people who are not from their tribe as they see them being less than their cattle. There should be a stop to their bloodletting and damage to people’s livelihood. Unfortunately, their marauding is creating another monster in the Ombatse.
I lived with Fulani (the ones that actually own cattle not the city ones) for a year (NYSC) and they don’t respect us (Yoruba Muslims) so don’t get your head in the cloud.

As for the woman, you want us to advice her? Lol! You've got jokes!!

I just hope this mother won't strangle the poor girl one day after she gets kicked out. She's wishing for her child to die so her husband doesn't find out? After deceiving the man so gravely for 7 yrs? What a witch!

Its very possible. I have a niece who was discovered to be SS at 11 years. Funny enough, the mum is in the medical field.
Unlike this story though, the parents are both AS.

OP, please save the child's life by getting across to someone who will confront the husband with the situation on ground. If left as-is, the woman could connive to have the girl killed.

Don't let your fiancee cow you into getting married, if you love her do get married to her, but her telling you she's a week pregnant is pure gibberish (as far as I know, pregnancy at 1 week can't be detected).

Also, be careful that she doesn't desperately look for someone to put the baby in her belly. THINK as a man, get your mum to state her reasons for objection (old folks see things sitting down that young ones like us don't see standing up).

Dede1: State governors in Nigeria are showing signs of power-drunkenness and acute disrespect for rule of law. The governor of a state in Nigeria does not have any right to sack an elected local government chairman. By this same token, governors do have the right appoint local government chairman because the constitution has granted such position as elective one.

It is the same parallel to the relationship between governor and president. The idiotic shenanigans such as the action accredited to Amaechi of Rivers States give credence to the statement that Africans are not qualified to practice democracy.

By this same token, governors do have the right appoint local government chairman because constitution has granted such position as elective.

Well written. The points raised in your post are the reasons why I support the FG's bid to delineate the funding of LGAs from state government accounts. That being said, we all know FG's reasons are altruistic but at the end, it would favor the masses.
