The Agalawas are of Nigeriene Tuareg ancestry who moved to Katsina and then Kano for trading purposes. Newlymarried: Seven Nigerian men who acted as middlemen to receive $8 million proceeds of romance scams from the victims of Nigerian Internet fraudsters infamously called Yahoo Boys have been arrested and charged to court.
The suspects were identified as Bolanle Christina Odeyale, 39, Forney, Texas; Oghenemine Jeffrey Agbroko, 34, of Nigeria; Charles Owhonigho Emurotu, 40, of Ontario, Canada; Jimmy Iwezu, 44, of Forney, Texas; Lori Tsoritse, 38, of Nigeria; Christopher Onyedikachi Okereke, 38, of Nigeria; and Rukevwe Solomon Ologban, 44, of Grand Prairie, Texas, from March 2018 through June 2019, working with a group of individuals in the District of Utah, aka the Utah Money Transmitters, who agreed to help overseas operators launder money obtained from the romance scheme. The primary operators of the alleged romance scams are known as the “Yahoo boys,” and operated in Nigeria.
The defendants either helped the Utah Money Transmitters source opportunities to work with Yahoo boys or helped them to transmit the fraud proceeds from the District of Utah to other places within the United States or abroad. Ultimately, the goal of the money laundering activities was to transmit the criminal proceeds to the Yahoo boys overseas, while paying a share of the financial gains to those who help move the funds along the way.
As alleged in the indictment, the Yahoo boys typically created a fictitious online persona and used the false persona to pursue online relationships with potential targets of the scam. Once gaining the victims’ trust, the Yahoo boys would use false pretence, such as the need to buy a laptop for a child in college, the need to repair equipment, pay an emergency medical expense or debt to the government. Many of the victims were elderly and lost their life savings, family inheritances and retirement funds. In return for their generosity, the victims were often promised the money would be returned.
An essential role in the romance scam was the Utah Money Transmitters. By operating in the District of Utah, they opened accounts at United States financial institutions to be used to collect money from victims and to distribute money to the co-conspirators, to conceal the ultimate destination of the funds and the Yahoo boys’ location and identities.
The defendants are charged with various federal crimes, including wire fraud, wire fraud conspiracy, and money laundering conspiracy. Their initial court appearance on the indictment will be scheduled for a later date and held before a U.S. Magistrate Judge at the Orrin G. Hatch United States District Courthouse in downtown Salt Lake City.
They went for the jugular of the elderly folks in Utah. They'll be spending a long time behind bars. In any event, those folks got sucked into the trap of the scammers through ignorance and greed, but thank goodness, they'll largely get their stolen funds back with the intervention of the Feds.

The five-year investigation accused doctors, government and the NHS of letting patients catch HIV and hepatitis.
More than 30,000 people were infected from 1970 to 1991 by contaminated blood products and transfusions.
About 3,000 have since died and more deaths will follow.
The Infected Blood Inquiry said victims had been failed "not once but repeatedly" by doctors, the NHS, government and others responsible for their safety.
Patient safety was not paramount in decision-making, it said, pointing out the risk of viral infections being transmitted in blood and blood products had been known about since the start of the NHS in 1948.
Despite this, people were exposed to "unacceptable risks", including:
● the continued importation of blood products from abroad - which included blood from high-risk donors in the US where prisoners and drug addicts were paid to give blood - despite a pledge to become self-sufficient
● the failure of the licensing regime to recognise such products were unsafe and should not have been licensed for use
● the continued sourcing of blood donations from high-risk populations in the UK too, such as prisoners, until 1986
taking until the end of 1985 to heat-treat blood products to eliminate HIV, despite the risks being known since 1982
● the government ignoring warnings in 1983 from one of the UK's top infectious disease experts, Dr Spence Galbraith, that all imported US blood products should be withdrawn from NHS use until the HIV risk was "clarified"
● a lack of testing from the 1970s onwards to reduce the risk of hepatitis, including being one of the last developed nations to start screening for hepatitis C when an accurate test was eventually found
● a four-year delay following the introduction of the hepatitis C screening before attempts were made to trace those who had been infected previously. It is estimated hundreds of people still have not been diagnosed - the disease can remain dormant for decades.

Inquiry chairman Sir Brian Langstaff described the scale of what happened as "horrifying" and said the authorities had been too slow to respond to the risks.
Addressing the issue of a cover-up, he said that better wording to describe it was "hiding the truth".
He said there has been a lack of openness, inquiry, accountability and elements of "downright deception", including destroying documents.
But he said hiding the truth included not only deliberate concealment, but telling half-truths or not telling people what they had a right to know - including the risks of treatment they received, what alternatives were available and, at times, even the fact that they were infected.
Sir Brian said the scandal had destroyed "lives, dreams, friendships, families and finances", adding that the numbers dying were still climbing week by week.
"This disaster was not an accident. The infections happened because those in authority - doctors, the blood services and successive governments - did not put patient safety first," he said.
Among those infected were around 380 children with bleeding disorders who got HIV after being given blood products for their condition, the report said.
Many of those died in childhood or young adulthood, having endured a level of pain and fear that no child or young person should ever have to face.

Following a two-day meeting, the bank’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) agreed to increase the Monetary Policy Rate(MPR) for the third straight time to rein in the country’s soaring inflation levels pegged at 33.69% in April 2024.
“The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) held its 295th meeting on the 20th and 21st of May 2024 to review recent economic and financial developments and assess risks to the outlook,” the CBN Governor Yemi Cardoso who is also the MPC chairman said on Tuesday.
“Decisions of the MPC. The committee’s decisions are as follows: 1. Raise the MPR by 150 basis points to 26. 25 per cent from 24.75 per cent.”
Cardoso, however, said the Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR) of Deposit Money Banks (DMBS) was retained at 45 per cent. The MPC also put the Asymmetric Corridor around the MPR at +100 and –300 basis points. It retained the liquidity ratio at 30 per cent.
The CBN chief who admitted the rising inflation levels in the country said the key focus of the MPC meeting was to achieve price stability by using tools available to rein in inflation.
He said the inflation pressure is being driven largely by food inflation, citing rising costs of transportation, infrastructure challenges, security challenges, and exchange rate issues as among the factors affecting food inflation.
Monday’s announcement comes amid soaring prices of commodities and a rising cost of living.
