You wouldn’t have to pay alimony unless your wife doesn’t work, or there’s a huge disparity in your incomes. With child support, as long as you get joint custody, you wouldn’t have to pay much or pay at all, the court may give you certain financial roles in the children lives but you won’t have to pay your wife anything.

If you don’t want to pay alimony or child support, asides having a prenup, make sure you have a working wife who makes money on the same level as you do. If you are the typical Naija man who likes to be the sole provider, then the court will say she’s accustomed to the lifestyle, now you are a provider to her and her new man until she decides to remarry.

Mostly what you stated here are correct, but child support does not depend on joint or sole custody. It depends on where the child spends most of their days and the income disparity between both.

If the child spends more days per week with the other party, even if your income is lower than their income, you will be required to pay child support to the other party.

The court first decides how much will be set aside from your both combined income for child support, next they will determine how many percentage of that amount is due to you versus the other person based on the income disparity..after that, they will use a formula to further prorate the portion of the non custodial parents based on the number of days the child will be spending with them, as you can see there is no way this will result into zero child support from non custodial parent to custodial.

Joint Custody simply means, both of you have equal decision making right toward the kids education, religion, upbringing, etc.

okay , thanks everybody ... actually my fear is not about who get the highest pay or properties if there's a divorce. The money usually doesnt matter at some point as in the case of bill gate and jeff besos . I don't ever pray for a divorce. But it seems there could only be a thought of divorce if there was a court marriage. I've read stories of couples fight that could have been settled if they had waited for few days, but one party couldn't control the anger and went straight to court and that would be the beginning of the end of the marriage, but if there wasn't a court marriage, even if it takes 1 year for them to realize their mistakes, they could still come back together and continue being husband and wife.

Going to court does not ‘end’ the marriage the way you put it.

Even after going to court, both of you can withdraw the case and tell the court that, you have resolved your differences.

Also, the most common and quickest way of getting divorce abroad is ‘no fault divorce.’ If most states in the USA, one party can fight against the no fault divorce and argue in court that, the differences are reconcilable.

Even if the divorce goes through, you guys can still remarry.

No matter what you do, never you go into marriage out of self-pity.

Also, never marry a lady because she is pregnant for you or you have done introduction to your parents or her parents, they will not stay with you.

Don’t fall for that trap about your fiancée wanting to be a ‘full Housewife’ so that the kids can be well taken care off by their mummy instead of the daycare, let’s her go hussle and bring-in her 50%.

Judges during divorce default to the home lifestyle that both of you have created before divorce. So if you have agreed that, she be the ‘Housewife and home keeper’ and you the workaholic and breadwinner, her attorney will use that against you and win…the Judge will not all of sudden force your soon to be Ex into the streets to go look for a job when you have rendered her economically invaluable and her degrees worthless by allowing her not to work for the past 10 years. The judge will in most cases agree that, the lifestyle you guys have created be maintained for many years after the divorce i.e. she remains a housewife taking care of the kids, she should likely take the house since she does not have updated employable skills and you go out and continue killing yourself winning the bread and paying for everything while she slowly ramp up her employable skills over many years in the future.

Know their games and rules and use them to your advantage, no body is going to congratulate you for killing yourself to provide for the whole household rather, they will use it against you that…e.g. ‘You have an history of high capacity production and industriousness and are capable of earning higher’ therefore you should pay more to the other party.

This evoked a personal experience long time ago, before I narrate it; I want to say that….none of these should discourage anyone, take them heads-on as challenges and you will overcome.

My underlying principle is, if you can survive in Nigeria, there no where under the Sun, where you cannot strive. Note my use of the words survive and strive, and it it true!

I was a young IT specialist, got a promising interview in New York City, arrived for my interview, which lasted for about 15 minutes.

It was an oral, face-me, I face-you interview with scenario questions. I understood the scenarios and the solution and proceed to give my solution with confidence and a sense of purpose.

After about 5 minutes, when I have nodded to myself that, I had done justice to the question through my oral presentation and was looking up with a smile and a expecting a nod of approval.

I was shocked, when the interviewer told me that, he did not understand anything I have said. I was confused, downcasted….he tried many other questions, same results.

I got up and left disappointed. My problem (rather their problem) was they could not understand my accent and been from Delta State (Warri no dey carry last) you know we speak very fast, so the accent and fast English speaking were the issue.

I had to take some America English speaking classes and deliberately slow down my rate of speech and it worked in subsequent interviews.

Now, the above happened because I was a fresh graduate and was seeking entry level position for which they were many other candidates. Later after obtaining higher qualifications and certifications in my field, I did not send any more, it was recruiters and interviewers who were making the efforts and allowance to understand what I am saying, the same thing happen to Indians in the US IT field today.

So, at that entry level; bend to their demands; there is a saying in the US that….While someone who understands and speaks many languages is called a multilingual, someone who understands and speaks only one language is called an American.
