nigerian democracy is governed by religion  huh huh huh huh
yes it is,check your naira note and the inscriptions on some of them

what do your executives, legislative and judicial arm use in swearing in,base most of the constitution on e.t.c

what are the major issues that aid in voting politicians in?note how many politicians bend over backward for church or mosque patrionage and photo opportunities with pastor adeboye and other men and women of GOD,
and the power these men and women of GOD in all religions have in making their members vote
i could go on and on, all these are what constitutes the bedrock of democracy
oyb:
fornication/adultery/drinking alcohol  is against the highlighted - i have not seen our 'religious' legislators drafting any law against it.

the line between what government and all religions consider illegal is very wide.

nb - i am firecely heterosexual
fornication is morally frowned upon in nigeria, same as adultery especially in sharia states, same as alcohol just like many other vices, the fact that the prosecution of them are not highlighted is simply because of the endemic poverty but they arr seen as wront by majority of nigerians.
so what is seen as morally or legally wrong by both religion and government is actually same thing in nigeriqa
AutosRe: Pls,info On Private Car Hire In Lagos! by lucabrasi(m): 2:27pm On Mar 12, 2009
try other car hire outlets in your immediate vicinity and compare the prices, also make sure you sign a binding contract and read in between the lines especially concerning repair and general maintanance of the car and you should have someone that ll supervise the driver

oyb:
Homosexuality has no place in a THEOCRACY (govt based on religion)

but Nigeria is not a theocracy- it is a democracy.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Democracy

excerpt

In political theory, democracy describes a small number of related forms of government and also a political philosophy. Even though there is no universally accepted definition of 'democracy',[3] there are two principles that any definition of democracy includes. The first principle is that all members of the society (citizens) have equal access to power and the second that all members (citizens) enjoy universally recognized freedoms and liberties

you cannot eat your cake and have it; you cannot expect that the freedoms of a Democratic society should not apply to ALL members of society.
and going by your assertions, who says the nigerian democracy is not governed by religion?political theory and political science right from the advent of liberalism has continued to evolve with different forms of slant ,tony blair and clinton came up with their own form of democracy which is the third way or social democracy, what we are simply doing in nigeria is the same thing so our form of governance shouldnt be cast in granite to justify a vice that is purely evil, and just like other devilish imports a cancer slowly eroding the country that must be nipped in the bud!!

@badriyah
why dont you oblidge us of the parts in nigeria where homosexuality was practised prior to the present time to back your wild and spurious claims?
from what i know, traditional religion which has been in practise before the arrival of the colonialists forbids these sort of acts and all religions are unanimous in their condemnation of it,if you want to practise your homosexuality, feel free to do so outside nigeria but it is against our culture and religious, sociological mindset qand even genetic make up.

the fact that terrorism is a new fad doesnt mean we must join in blindly or the fact that a lot of people in nigeria support ritual killings doesnt make it right.

even in the constitution,it forbids members of seceret cults from contesting for a post, why should gays and lesbians who in my opinion are worse anyway shouldnt be classed either in same veing or worse@post
as for the lady co ordinator,it is obvious she is doing it for the foreign aid funneled into her bank account from abroad, how else will you explain innocent children who dont even know the difference between a straight and gay person being given tee shirts to wear and made to stand in front of the cameras?
the lawmakers showuld be shamed of themselves,if average nigerians and civil liberties protest, they dont give them a pedestal to air theior views, but they give gays and lesbians, one wonders if the reports we hear about them and practising some gay vices are true after all,

Electoral reform: FG approves White Paper on Uwais panel report

The Federal Government yesterday formally rejected the Justice Mohammed Uwais-led Electoral Reform Committee’s recommendation on the appointment of the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as it approved the white paper on the electoral reform committee’s report.

The Federal Executive Council at its weekly meeting presided over by President Umaru Yar’Adua adopted the recommendation of the Aondoakaa-led review committee that the president should not hands off the appointment of the INEC boss, hinging its argument on the doctrine of separation of power.

The Electoral Reform Committee had recommended that the National Judicial Council (NJC) should be responsible for the appointment of the board of INEC and those of the three proposed bodies to be established with the Senate’s ratification.

The Minister of Information and Communications, Prof. Dora Akunyili who briefed the State House correspondents on the outcome of the meeting in the company of her Minister of State, Alhaji Ikra Bilbis, FCT Minister, Alhaji Adamu Aliero and the Presidential Spokesman, Mr. Olusegun Adeniyi said it would amount to a violation of the doctrine of separation of power to ask the judiciary to perform executive functions.

She said council also did not accept the recommendation that election petitions should be concluded within six months after the elections: four months at the tribunal and two months at the appellate court because the current system in which judgments sometimes come after six months presented a better dispensation of justice to the aggrieved.

Key highlights of the recommendation which government said it believed would give much greater credibility and acceptability to future elections in the country are as follows:

INEC COMPOSITION:
The establishment of a new, truly, non-partisan independent and impartial INEC composed of: a chairman, deputy chairman and six persons of unquestionable integrity, one of whom must come from each of the six geo-political zones.

The inclusion of six other nominees comprising one nominee each from the following bodies: Labour; Nigerian Bar Association; Media; National Youth Council; Nigerian Civil Society; and Women Organisations. All the appointments will be subject to Senate confirmation.

CONDUCT OF ELECTIONS
Open Secret Ballot System which allows voters to go into a polling booth to mark their ballots in secrecy and drop them in boxes in the open as well as the accreditation of registered voters prior to the commencement of voting for the purpose of tracking how many people cast their ballots in a polling station.
Other recommendations are the display of voter register prior to elections to enable registered voters, political parties and the electorate generally make claims and objections and the announcement of elections results at all polling centres by presiding officers, duly signed and copies given to accredited agents, the Police and the SSS.

Other measures are:
The scrapping of the State Independent Electoral Commissions so that INEC can conduct all elections in the country, including the local government polls as well as the ban of politicians convicted of violence and thugery during elections, in addition to any other punishment from holding public office for 10 years.

FUNDING OF INEC
The funding of INEC is to be first-line charge on the Consolidated Revenue Fund of the Federation so as to guarantee financial and administrative independence.

INDEPENDENT CANDIDATURE
Government accepts the recommendation that Independent candidates be allowed to contest all elections.

UNBUNDLING OF INEC
Government accepts recommendation to create the following new bodies to handle some of the functions currently performed by INEC:

POLITICAL PARTIES REGISTRATION AND REGULATORY COMMISSION
Establishment of a Political Parties Registration and Regulatory Commission to, among other things, register political parties, monitor their organization and operations and arrange for the annual auditing of accounts.

ELECTORAL OFFENCES COMMISSION
Establishment of an Electoral Offences Commission to, among other things, deter the commission of electoral malpractices, investigate where they occur and prosecute alleged offenders.

CENTRE FOR DEMOCRATIC STUDIES
Establishment of the Centre for Democratic Studies to undertake broad civic and political education for legislators, political office holders, security agencies, political parties and the general public.

TRIBUNALS
The number of judges that sit in tribunal should be reduced from five to three so that more Tribunals can be established per State.

DISQUALIFICATION OF CANDIDATES
Disqualification of candidates fielded for any election should be done on the basis of the provisions of the 1999 Constitution and the Electoral Act.

FUNDING POLITICAL PARTIES
For the purpose of transparency and accountability, political parties must publicly disclose to INEC all sources of funding, including donations. Only parties that score a minimum of 5 percent of votes cast will be eligible to receive grants from public funds.

According to Akunyili, FEC decided to forward these conclusions to the Council of State for advice and thereafter, those decisions that require administrative action will be immediately implemented, while those that require amendment of the 1999 Constitution and the Electoral Act, 2006 or the enactment of new legislation will be forwarded to the National Assembly.

The council had stepped down some issues contained in the white paper on the electoral reform committee’s report for review by Aondoakaa-led committee. It accepted the review committee’s recommendations on the grey areas.

t least he has done a commendable job with the electoral reform, lets hope and pray the legislative tow the honourable path.

@mowire
im a redeemed member and my elder sister is even part of the main redeemed choir in nigeria and have met pastor adeboye and still do in the course of church activities, the point im making with this is that im not speaking as an outsider, neither am i criticising the man of GOD as we know the implication of that in the bible, however we cannot be totally passive in the face of some issues that can simply not be ignored, and the issue of a private jet especially at this time isnt the best time at all, especially when there is a viable alternative with equal comfort a first class compartment has all the comforts he will need for evangelising, and seeing as money is no object, a situation of missed flights and delays e.t.c will be rare as he ll simply be put on the first class of the next available plane out, mike adenuga was flying commercial up untill a couple of years ago same as billionaires the world over, another pertinent moral conundrum of this private jet is the environmental pollution it will add

i must be quick to add that,im still not 100% convinced this is true untill i see conclusive pictorial evidence

@some ppl making wild and unreasonable asserions especially in the first page

no one put a gun to our head to pay tithes and offerings, but there are some issues like that of the private jet where members dont have a say one way or another,so unless you r calling for reddemers to carry guns and cutlasses and picket the international airport,im at a loss what you r on about, as usual!!

im a member of redeemed and while i wont criticise the man personally,i think its a wrong move and certainly not at this time of global economic turmoil, its gettinmg increasingly difficult for a christian/pentecostal member to defend and rationalise a lot of these actions and its a shame, big automobiles can be justified, even massive mansions can be justified but im still struggling to see the justification for a private jet at this time, a first class compartment will serve his purposes without any discomfort to his person

RichyBlacK:
And have you asked yourself the benefits a British citizen is entitled to?

This is the problem with these Giant-of-Africa Nigerians; in order to excuse the kleptomania of the successive failed and corrupt governments of Nigeria, they use Western governments as the gold standard. However, in accessing the standard of living of the average Nigerian, they remind us that Nigeria is only forty-eight years old!

These apologists of official corruption, ineptitude, thievery, kleptocracy and government-sanctioned fraud/419, would not tell us how British and American citizens are taken care of by their governments, but would want our government officials (many of them hopelessly useless) to live at the same or similar standard of living as government officials of countries like the United States, Canada and the UK. Pathetic!
the situation we have here is totally different, the pertinent question here is that is there anything wrong in a diasporian who has seen the way politics is being practised in the western democracies, going into politics in nigeria?bearing in mind that he has not only seen and experienced the way democracy should be practised, but he will bring something that is lacking which is a wide and varied experience on board.

secondly, you are asking about the benefits to british citizens, let us remember that there is no basis for comparison between both nations at thgis time, and the only reason i mentioned british mps is simply to point out that an elected representative in whatever guise have acess to some fringe benefits which come with the office, and aspiring to that as part of considerations in vying for office is neither immoral nor criminal in any way shape or form.

the diasporian rather than excusing the nigerian situation from my own perspective, are part of the collateral damage, and mostly in their different countries of permamnent or temporary residence mostly directly as a result of the failed nation,so i dont really see them excusing the present state of affairs as you r asserting.

lastly, cause it seems we have wires crossed here, all i am advocating for personally is that a diasporian who is moving back to nigeria with his or her family after several years to start again and assist in building up his/her nation, leaving behind the comfort zone, certainty of the basics like electricity, water safety e.t.c has every right to consider the perks that will go with whatever office he /she is trying to occupy in politics, which i have averred earlier on that is just like applying for any other office,i dont know where you started reading the comments on here from, but i dont know where anyone has excused the present corruption and ineptitude in governqance,if you do,then please avail me of this and i will avow publicly my mistake.

unless what you are advocating for,is that a diasporian moving back after 10/20/30 years abroad, should sign a vow of abject want and poverty to prove a point of patriotism

i will still disagree with you on your assertions,do you know the benefits a british mp in parliament are entitled to?you should go check it out and then change it to naira at the present rate and its running into several millions, please go and find out and you will be suprised how much they are entitled to,john prescott was an ordinary working class boy,an equivalent to our own nigerian isale eko or ajegunle boy and he is a millionaire now in retirement, same goes for the former exchequer who was a postman prior to a political career, whati think the poster is saying is that, diasporians have more chance of being valued for their contributions and getting to the top politically than in the uk,also remember an average diasporian is leaving his life, comfort zone everything to gamble on a very fickle and potentialy deadly career as a nigerian politician so i believe he/she deserves any cushion for him/her and the family, its different to a nigerian living in nigeria

the gospel truth of it is that you cannot make a silk purse out of a sow's ears, the parties with ideology are there, but they r not given the chance either due to inec and the pdp behemoth labour party has an ideology, they are social democrats,ac does to an extent, fela floated a political party those days and it was an extreme left socialist party, same as gani fawehinmi's party, the point of my preamble is that there were, and have been parties with ideologies, but the pdp and the govt simply would never let them see the light of day, oshiomole shouldnt have had any cause to associate with the likes of tinubu and atiku if not for the logistics that he knows he needs to win which was besides a mass grassroots and state appeal, beacuse he is a labour man, socialist and tinubu and atiku are the opposite

for people who dont know, the poster is totally right and within his/her right to ask this pertinent questions, for the girls/ladies on here,if you have not had an experience of this, doesnt mean that its non existent in nigeria.

there have been several cases of fathers raping /sleeping with their daughters mostly for some form of ritual and some just for the fun of it,in the 70s or 80s,there was a prevalent slang in pidgin english that was said to reing then" na me born am,na me give am belle" in lagos.
personally i think it is a huge shame that purported next generation of young women are still prepared to either sweep something as grave as this under the carpet or dismiss it outrightly even though thousands of girls are suffering this abuse in nigeria presently

I never really thought of it initialy but I have told my wife that we should be preparing to go back to Naija in the near future, we will open a little cottage industry nothing serious to keep body and soul together, and eventually get involved in the political process at any of the levels mentioned above and from there we see what the future holds. I think a lot of diaspoaran should think along this line. If u are waiting for the day u will be a millionaire in oyinbo's country u go wait tay.
the key thing iis not just opening a cottage industry, but doing it in your home town/village or where you have the most influence, they have to see you as part of them and not just some diasporian returnee and the point they start to identify with you is when you r having political credibility
debosky:
Most seem to be interested in outright looting. I don't agree that seeking office for 'perks' - especially monetary, should be the inspiration for going into government. People are living on political patronage instead of engaging in productive activity because it is so profitable.

While fair income should be made in office (to prevent corruption) the opportunities for making mind boggling money from government positions is leading to win at all costs mentalities without a focus on serving or making a difference.
you r right, but isnt the system responsible for this?the fact that the kind of people we have in leadership are crooked means the only diasporian they will have by their side is bound to be crooked, from what we read of ibori and his shady deals, you dont expect him to know or associate with honest, blue collar nigerians while he was in london so it stands to reason that he ll surround himself with guys doing same thing he was doing while in london.

what im saying is that, just like looking for a good job in any company, you will consider the perks of the job,and political office is no exception,so i dont see anything wrong with that as a catalyst, unless what your saying is that a political office holder should be seen and live in abject poverty,to be honest with you,the winning at all costs syndrome has underlying reasons but ill leave that for another thread, but it certainly isnt the fault of diasporians or even the creating of the present crop of politicians to a large extent

What type of business idea do you have in your head?

The only other type of idea you give the guy is for him to involve himself in a dirty business? what kind of man are you Lubra?

Na wa o - well, sorry, looks like you realy think way below what others think, a business worth while, thats what the guy is asking for, not a business of renting tent to owambe goers like yourself. hahahaha.[/quote]i will reply these comments for a couple of reasons, first to school ignorant coops like yourself as you might learn something and secondly for the benefit of the poster and others that might stumble upon this thread.

to the tent business idea that you r addressing with derision and scorn, these tents get rented out for an average of 150,000 to 250 thousand naira each day,and in lagos you are bound to get at least one party wedding, funeral e.t.c every single weekend not counting luncheons and functions during the week, the only people that will get paid out of that are the boys setting it up and the driver with less than 50,000 out of the total payment leaving well over 100,000 naira every week that is an income of almost half a million monthly with minimal overheads for an investment of 6000pounds(around 1.4 million naira)
now if you can work that round your head, tell me who is ignorant between both of us!!

as for what you are calling dirty business, its a business where you make a 100% profit, and after building up a relationship with the spare parts dealers in nigeria, they are known to finance these trips with their own money.

like i asked you in my previous comment, why dont you show us the evidence that you are richer than everybody here, seeing as you think 10,000 pounds is chicken feed, you r spewing out more dirty rubbish than a rodeo ground and i suggest you read and learn more rather than making ignorant comments,go on google and find out how the biggest business people in the world started

pdp being destroyed is not as forlon as we might think,in the south west for instance in the last elections ac cleaned out and won convincingly but for inec and their machinations, evidence has shown that at least in lagos, osun, ekiti(ac) and ondo(labour/ac)ogun(anpp/labour ac)led with gbenga daniel coming behind.

in the east apga, ppa cleaned out and in the north anpp, rather than focus on anpp i think inec should be the main focus and all the spotlight should continue to be on iwu so he wont have a chance to perpetuate the fraud he did in 2007,i read somewhere that tinubu, oshiomoloe, akanda and other ac stalwarts are going to be party agents in the forthcoming re run in ekiti state to forestall any inec machinations, already in one of the wowns where the re run is taking place(ikole)some inec staffs and pdp agents have been caught and handed over to the police for removing the ac names in the electoral register leaving the pdp names

nigeria doesnt need foreign investors if soludo and the rest get their acts right, the countries that insulated themselves from the global financial market, are the only ones smiling now, notable examples like china and india are there for all to see.
the reason foreign investors left the shores of nigeria,is because of the cost of running their business, electricity e.t.c and the stress associated with it,so lets not kid ourselves, shell and the rest are not leaving in a hurry because their over heads is being taken care of in the slush profits they are making

@poster
there s a whole lot you can do with 3000pounds talk less of  10,000pounds
the first thing is not to let comments like these deter you,or make you feel like you have to over stretch yourself or start anything big,one of the most common causes for businesses failing in the first year is over stretching yourself, start very small and if you target the right demographics, you will be sorted.
there are more than enough businesses you can do in nigeria that is guaranteed to be lucrative, however the key thing is having a trustworthy individual to run it in your absence, lastly you need to consider a couple of things before you embark on anything
1.where does your interest lie?seeing as there are diverse and different business areas in nigeria e.g farming diary farming is lucrative,livestock,vegetables,e.t.c fish, snails ,

2.you could buy a tent from here and rent it out in nigeria,i know a friend who did this and is charging about 200,000 for the use and is always booked, the tent is between 4-6000 pounds however, the advantage is that all you need to do is maintain it and thats all.

3.if you dont mind getting your hands dirty, and you are not subject to immigration controls, you could break cheap japanese cars into buses and re selling in nigeria, dirty but very lucrative i could go on and on and on about business ideas but having a trusthworthy individual and where your interests lie is key

there are a lot you can do,just think of 100 and something million people and their needs, and more than enough ideas will come to you

your commendation or not will not change any fact will it?the simple fact of the matter, speaking as someone who has been to the state after he was impeached, and spoken to several ppl on all cadres of the state polity the ekiti indigenes especially the grassroots still love and identify with him, hence the reason he still has their loyalty till now,how many impeached or disgraced politician has that sort of hold on their supporters, apart from alams?
TravelRe: New Ferry Service in Lagos. How Effective? by lucabrasi(m): 6:08pm On Mar 05, 2009
of course water transportation is a logical initiative which will go a long way in solving the bottlenecks, remember lagos geographically has more water than land, the government isnt stopping any private individual going there with their gondolas or ferrys or whatever as on the contrary their actions so far has shown they are actually in favour of this,so in my opinion,i think nigerians should step in  an individual capacity and invest in these forms of trans,it is not only lucrative but will solve the transportation problem in lagos to a large extent

PoliticsRe: Ayo Fayose: The Rejected Stone Now The Capstone? by lucabrasi(m): 5:31pm On Mar 05, 2009
while fayose looted ekiti state,he did a lot in ekiti state like road networks which is the most prominent including other notable achievements, and that is the reason why in spite of his ouster he still retains the support of the grassroots and very many ekiti indigenes,so he was never rejected by the citizens of the state but by obasanjo and his girlfriend olujinmi
PoliticsRe: Senators, Representatives And Academic Qualifications. by lucabrasi(m): 5:25pm On Mar 05, 2009
education isnt our problem but the flawed system that has allowed defective nigerians to go sit in the various chambers, its like having a leaky sieve,it ll end up allowing all sorts of sediments to mix together with what the sieve is supposed to keep apart, dimeji bankole's personal life for people that were interested should have shown them he wasnt morally qualified to occupy the post,he was educated in the best universities of learning and that hasnt stopped him behaving like a common thug

you dont expect him to invite guests and then start tongue lashing them publcly do you?he s meant to be a non partisan and objective moderator, the best he can do like he is doing is highlighting all the issues dear to the average nigerian and reading out the emails even the ones abusing the guests and phone calls
@post
if he invites them and they either refuse to acknowledge him, then theres nothing the guy can do to compel them,i have heard it on more than one ocassion where he ll apologise for the inability of an earlier scheduled guest to make it,after being informed literally minutes to the programme commencing

iknow that you have to be a multi millionaire, thats for sure, and i know that every micro finance bank in nigeria are required to have a minimum reserve of 20million so if you have 20million cold hard cash, then think of the required lincenses, securing a befitting building lease in a nice location, staff cars, qualified staffs e.t.c

True word but what has that got to do with hanging aroung with a hoodlum and not telling him the truth? Why did Adeboye not preach to the man and make him change his ways? Why did Adeboye not tell him to return is loot? Or no be the same adeboye that said that there's no proof against these looters?

Abegi
and how exactly are we supposed to measure the sucess or failure of any preaching making an impact?the former head of the anglican communion(cant recall his name now)said when he met obasanjo,he gave him some suggestions and how much the ordinary nigerians are suffering, the answer obj gave him immediately dismissing the suggestion was it was "a christian economics"and laughting at him,the point here is that the man will tell ibori and others his own, same as a pastor will tell you or me to repent, they however have no power to force ibori or me or you to change by fire by force, how many preachers have knocked on your door or in the street that you have either ignored,or listened to and gone on to do your own thing?
saying there was no evidence, against them is because he hasnt personally seen any and didnt want to judge like the bible forbids lest he ll be judged same way without evidence
