Looking in retrospect
When Otedolla came into the picture fighting for the soul of FBNH, the price moved from circa #7 to #16 in a matter of 2 months......

It never occurred to me why he forayed into banking as he has been a commodity trader all his life but I believe the true picture is actually coming out gradually

The level of investment needed to boost electricity infrastructure in the country is humongous, the likes of our billionaires might not have the experience to quickly deliver and bring such project to profitability quickly.....example being the magic he performed with forte oil and geregu, another example of bringing big projects to profitability would be the dangote refinery that will start selling Nigerian diesel in a matter of days from now

With the recent tariff increase, the process of unbundling the power sector is on full gear and what better way to participate than being in the team of prime- lenders......

I believe for the likes of geregu and transpower to move to the next level in power generation, they will need funding and unbundling of existing laws that might be a bottle neck to attracting investment......

He is going to make money during lending while project construction is going on and once the project is commissioned he enjoys the icing on the cake

With what I am seeing the new recapitalization drive by the cbn is going to be moimoi for the banks to get, foreign investors will mop everything up be it debt or equity financing

If you are in fugaz and more of a fundamentalist like me it's to sit tight, I believe the likes of GT and ZENITH will hit #200 before 2026 recapitalization deadline

Great news. The truth remains transcorp power and geregu are over priced. The FA does not justify the price. The current price na manipulation. Thr are many companies that are far better on nse.Tony na scam alert and his bank na channel for yahoo on the street....go and verify.

Oga mi, its better you follow the money, these people have seen the blue print of Nigeria and positioned themselves long ago, once u get the drift it's better you follow the wave
A new tarrig was just approved to make electricity a more lucrative, just watch how 95% of Nigerians will be moved into band A consumers.....

Flash🛎: The first move was to relocate the Banking Supervisory Dept of the CBN from Abuja where there’s not one commercial bank headquarters to Lagos where all commercial banks have their headquarters.

Then, the recapitalisation order where no bank is allowed to divert its profit to capital base and that will be properly monitored by the Banking Supervisory Dept of the Central Bank which is now located in the same Lagos where the banks’ headquarters are domiciled.

These banks will as from Tuesday have to strategise on how to meet up with this requirement. The truth of the matter is that dollars kept by their big owners will have to be brought out to raise the capital base. They will have to look for foreign investors too and since backlog of valid forex have been settled, they’ll be eager to bring their dollars to Nigeria.

The President knew that he'd request for a massive recapitalization before he cleared all outstanding valid forex backlog.

But the banks’ minimum capital is not in dollar so they will have to convert their dollars to naira if the banks want to remain in business. I have told us several times that this war to save our currency is multidimensional but only a few agreed with me.

I do not think that the cards to checkmate forex banditry are all yet laid on the table. This President is a money person, he’s a financial engineer and he’s well grounded. Those who think that it’s game as usual should start to have a rethink if they don’t want to go bankrupt due to their inherent greed.

It is wrong of you to think of those looking for a weakness in the rules of the game to make profit as greedy.......

How would you describe the previous presidents borrowing and foreign policies, remember he was touted as the saviour of Nigeria

No matter the wand the current president wants to wave, the rule of the game is that money must be made, the question is Who makes the money......On normal grounds all would agree that a free market would be the fairest but this is Nigeria

The previous president lopsided the whole system and ensured that it was only his henchmen that were benefitting the National cake

We are watching the current one

This article highlights some of the things I mentioned earlier.
Notice the part the reads; "With the exception of Sterling Bank, none would require additional capital raising if retained earnings were recognized as part of share capital."
I did state (in a previous post) that incorporating the RE component would reduce the difference between what is required and what they have and imply little or no capital raise, when in reality, the banks actually need more funding... otherwise, the economy "might have to pay for it" sooner or later.

Also notice the part that reads; "It seems that the Central Bank is prioritizing direct capital injections into banks rather than relying on accounting entries to satisfy recapitalization requirements."
This is very true!

I also agree with the writer's assertion that; "Although the Central Bank has permitted mergers and acquisitions, this suggests it anticipates that some banks might struggle to meet the new capital requirements"
This is the part I dislike about the whole exercise. It smacks off of biase on the part of the apex bank. (think @ Frangel also mentioned this)
Not fair that a bank like UNITY and it's likes would have to "dine from the same table" as GTCO, ZENITH, ACCESS etc.

Enough of the recap policy talk.
As always, the focus should be on how to tap from the opportunities it will present/create.
We'll see how the market reacts to the policy in the course of time.

It is well

Sometimes in recent past I was privy to a set of lawyers that negotiate big ticket transactions.....I was made to understand that the likes of Gt, ACCESS and ZENITH being muscled out of big ticket transactions by the likes Citi in the Nigerian space is becoming imminent........

This recapitalization exercise is a way out for our banks to breathe again because even with at least 10% local content policy,if they are poorly funded they cannot participate in some Hugh transactions in oil and gas, communications and digital economy......

Anyway, it's still the likes of citi, standard and Morgan that will still inject their funds into the banks through proxies........

All in all, money is being made and will be made, its just being privy to good information and making a good analysis and coming out with an informed judgement

The next 24 -36months will create billions that will trickle down to retail investors like me

Dangote is paying a 30 Naira dividend, and now UCAP is also going to pay 1.8, which I am liking. But, it is not always about how much we will benefit from the next round of dividend earnings. We need to hold these companies accountable for their actions.

I don't know about you, but I don't want blood money. I have noticed that Dangote Cement is not keen on safety. One of its trucks crashed into an electric pole on my friend's street in Port Harcourt, and now another incident in Lagos has taken the life of an innocent bystander.

It is not all about updating their "write-offs, impairment of property, plant, equipment, and intangibles" line as mere expenses on their books oo. angry angry embarassed

So many things are wrong with Nigeria......The road that truck sits on is never meant to handle more than 30ton load at a spot, what is a truck of over 63ton doing on it.... .. ......

Nigeria is a hot bed when investing. The instability, geo-tension and the "Nigerianess" drives the madness on value erosion overtime. You must be really BIG to go long term.
Hence, I see reasons to the earlier submission questioning how the invested sum was gotten while still discounting the fact that legal money still sign-up long-term contract.

To succeed in the Nigerian Market, is just big balls,

Take a look at FBNH, some thing that was begging people to enter at #4........Now small fishes like me can't swim in, UBA begged people to enter at #2 consistently for nearly a year..

In my own opinion it's better to lock such profits in bonds while waiting for the bad news to make market crash

I kept regretting not selling and making my first I million in stock market..I bought 10,000 units of fbn during PO at #33.00 which is part of my holdings till date before averaging down

Hmmmmm,

At this stage I can only encourage those in the seat to sit tight

Banks are preparing to increase their capital base so that they can participate in big ticket transaction, GT wants to explore equity option, others might explore merger and acquisition, others too will explore debt options.....

All in all the banks have to look really good for their respective brides therefore they have to carry the market along

I fear financial engineering as a retail investor especially in Nigeria

I see the current events in the market as a black swan event ( hitting 800%-2000%) profit by just sitting tight for 4 years....

Many businesses out there are not making money, their increased revenue stems from inflationary pressures and the country is just stemming the tides

The dust will probably settle in a year or 2 years time by which businesses can now plan and execute their plans confidently

It's a northern game which Nigerians fail to see cos of bigotry

Akpabio is not the first to pad budget, na their way for national assembly, but blowing Akpabio own out of proportion must stop

Well you are just ranting emotionally and ignorantly
Is it true that there is over 3 trillion in the budget that is just listed as bulk sums and not ?itemized ?
Yes absolutely true

Is it transparent and should it be so?
Absolutely not

Is it padding
Again absolutely not?

What is the money for?
INEC
TETFUND
NATIONAL ASSEMBLY
JUDICIARY
among others
These are entities that collect their money in bulk without breakdown in the budget
For whatever reason it was agreed long ago that Judges will not come to the National Assembly to defend budget for a number of reasons relating to independence

Unfortunately it has always been so with INEC too

It did not start today and is nothing to do with Tinubu or AKpabio
It is a budget passed by the Senate TOGETHER with the National Assembly not the Senate alone
So if Niingi is unhappy about it he knows what to do

To come and do two things
1. Claim the budget is antiNorth
2. Pretend that these allocations without breakdown is something new

Is very dishonest and mischievous

You have every right to hate Tinubu
However let us be factual and rational, ask questions and listen to answers
I can agree that the Judiciary and perhaps even INEC should have financial independence but others should have a breakdown
For that to happen the rules have to change .
Is there padding?
There is no budget that does not have padding
Even housewives pad budgets for their husbands but this one Ning is doing is pure drama

Was there a breakdown of INEC budget under Buhari,Jonathan or Obasanjo?

The North has united fighting the South, Singling out individuals,

Emefiele is a crook and his policy was poorly planned, but one thing I've learned is that Nigerian governors do not mean well for the people. Some of them nearly had heart attacks because of that policy, running from one court and media house to the other in a bid to stop Emefiele. The whole "effort" utterly put me off. Some believed their governors were fighting for them, but the reality is that governors were all about themselves and their stashed loots.

Nigerian governors also made a similar move against Okonjo Iweala and Sanusi when they begged to save for the rainy day.

Look at d conclusion you are making after heavy media trials........

Under whose watch did emefiele action occur

We Nigerians should please elevate ourselves from tribal sentiments and see the game our leaders are playing, they don't have the interest of the people at heart

Emefiele announced total naira change a month to elections( this action single handedly nearly ruined tinubus presidential bid, that action alone elevated obi from a distant third opposition to second, there was practically no cash in circulation to prosecute elections the Nigerian way( it usually goes to the highest bidders)

Nigerians have suddenly forgotten their suffering during dat period and are now doing economic analysis of what they barely understand for example people sold old #1000 naira notes for #700 for fear of it turning waste in their hands

And we all think Tinubu won't retaliate

As usual tribal sentiments have been whipped up as smoke screens while the Elephants fight heavily among themselves

As a Nigerian ur most important perogative should be not to get slaughtered with the pigs

The 2020 case was a very rare occurrence. It was a fortune making opportunity for risk takers and sound investor. Another very good example is UCAP

The last time TBills was trading at 18% , I think it was in 2016 , we knew how it affected the stock market. Attentions shifted to the fixed income market and a lot of good stocks tanked. NSE lovers that picked up good stocks at very low prices at that time and held till date are reaping bountifully now.

But in any case , it is still a win win situation. All I see is opportunities in both markets . Still lots of opportunities, a lot of money to be made.

Investing is about putting sure money where ur mouth is...... During the period we are are talking about, the whole country was under the seige of covid 19, the country was in lock down, there were talks of loan default...... Every where was gloomy, Abba kyari died of covid during this period, d index case of covid in Lagos came from a larfarge expertriate, the whole of airtel head office in banana island was in fear as the index case visited there

I wouldn't say we hate work infact, the opposite. The average African works as hard as others if not harder. Just like the prospects of a homeless child, with time, I've come to appreciate more the role macroeconomic factors play on everyday attainment of citizens for example, the borrowing rate for African nations being 5x their European counterparts, external stiffling of the few good leaders we have produced or paucity of good leadership are big issues. The Afcta with time should help us speak with strength.

In a capitalist world, the multinationals want cheap inputs and record breaking annual profits to their shareholders. Same issue is also seen in the West just that it's much worse here. We can't change the fact that just like 400yrs ago, they're here to profit at whatever expense. What we can change is how we regulate them, how much profit is retained locally and how that feeds thru the system for greater good. That's where government agencies come into play. I can't remember the last well thought and implemented policy that was followed thru since OBJs days...

While ur argument sounds nice to hearing, do you know DAT the available businesses are being heavily taxed, let's not just regurgitate what government sponsored media feeds us........Even if the govt were able to have their way and get what they want from multinationals, the bulk of the benefits would be gobbled down by our politicians b4 trickles get to you.......... For example it is on record dat one cement company proposed to the Ogun state govt to rebuild all its roads with concrete and not pay tax for 10 years, the sitting governor rejected the proposal hands down and instead opted for cash, its about 17years since dat proposal was put forward, the concrete road built to show d effectiveness of concrete is still there rock solid, the local community enjoying the road but a short sighted and greedy governor opted for tax payment that can be embezzled............

My dear Africa as a whole have to find a way to enforce accountability, the amount of money that is not accounted for in our system on a daily basis is humongous..... If you have done one form of business or the other you would be able to attest to this, even high brow areas like banana island, burdillon and maitama, we have sophisticated agberos with PhDs terrorising citizens and extorting monies in the name of taxes dat never gets to the coffers of government

The issue here is that we have to start from somewhere.

I'm no fan of the monopoly OBJ gave Dangote but from a nationalistic perspective, its helped the nation gain sustainability in cement production else foreign companies would have still been telling us how corruption is the reason they can't produce in Nigeria but want to import and sell here.

The cocoa issue is one that has had more dispute of late. West Africa produces over 80% of cocoa. The multinationals are insistent on paying pennies to the farmers and have fought every move to pay a reasonable sum. They'd rather return and give 'aid'. African nations are not going get the production capacity of the West overnight. They have to build from somewhere.
It's largely how pure undiluted capitalism works and not just an issue here. Western nations have increasingly levied imports from certain nations hence incentivising/forcing producers to make goods locally and not import finished goods.
You see the average African hates work.... Let me cite another commodity called corn....Corn is mainly used as livestock feed, but when it was discovered that corn can be successfully used to make biodiesel.... what do you think would happen to the price of corn, it would go up.......

No African Country is invested in Research and Development, all we want is to cajole a Company to invest in the country and we bring out our omo-onile mentality to want to control it but alas most capitalist are well prepared for this in advance

There are so many things that can come our of cocoa but we wait for nestle or pfizer to come up with new uses then you now want to dictate to them

Obj started on a good path with cassava by advocating that all flour in Nigeria must contain at least 20% cassava, that policy made a lot of cassava farmers millionaires but it presented technical problems which we Nigerians were not prepared to solve and we were not also prepared to eat moldy flour as a result of 20% cassava added

To cut long story short d policy was abandoned by d succeeding government in place of protectionism and mercantilism

The real question is do you have sufficient forex to sell to all the dealers of the listed categories. Clearly not, currently even before the ban was lifted companies whose imports were approved would apply for say $1m forex and would be given $5-10k, hence they are majorly in the black market. The real issue is $ liquidity and until we increase inflow unbanninng makes no difference to fx issues.

The flipside will be an increase in customs revenue due to more import duties, cheaper commodities at the expense of employment for locals, while killing local production rather than resolving the issues faced by local producers. Yes we may not have competitive advantage in rice but is that same for toothpick, wheelbarrow, headpan and a whole others, we cannot as over 200m people stick to importing everything, this is not sustainable as we will just keep expanding the unemployment bracket and fueling insecurity.

We need to balance things and see the big picture but this cut and paste approach will lead us no where.

Nigeria as a country is not ready to do business, I pray tinubu gets it right......Currently, at #1000 to $1 the country has all the necessary conditions to attract the needed capital...... The united states wants to move the bulk of their businesses away from China, if only Nigeria can just but get 1 or 2 out of this..........
Countries and Companies into international business know the game very well.......
Look at what is happening to French companies like arlit in Niger
No company will like to say invest $50billion in Nigeria and when they repatriate $200trillion after say 5years someone starts crying apartheid and starts implementing capital controls......
International capital has really wise up above that........
Best approach for Nigeria to take is something like the Taiwan style , everybody gets what they bargained for; nobody's crying fowl anywhere

Take cassava for example, u dont need to be a genius to produce it just clear any piece(acre) of land and stick fresh cassava sticks in, do the minimum weeding required and after 1 year, a family of 4 can have garri to eat and drink for another year.......

I once came across a party invite in Ontario organized by Nigerians and the star attraction is garri, peanut and milk to be soaked during the party.....

The average person would think this people are just missing home but imagine the whole of Canada developing a taste for garri maybe as breakfast cereal......D amount of forex dat alone will generate Nigeria will be close to oil revenue

Its not impossible to produce garri in canada but it may not be practical

The above is the story of rice and tomato paste processing nobody tells u about.....

Everyone keeps looking at demand ignoring supply

I believe the president should be snacking on Garri and peanut at UN meetings wearing Nigerian ankara and sipping chilled zobo to push our own commodities to d global stage

In June, 2015, immediately that nonsense Buhari entered office, he banned 40 items from being imported into Nigeria. Tinubu has ordered the immediate cancellation of that Ban. Nigerians are now free to import the following 40 listed products. They are no longer contraband.

I hope the President has surrounded himself with good economic advisers.......
Production will forever be a game of compititive advantage,
Nigeria has no business producing rice, we cant compete with indonesia , japan and india for the rice market, i just pity the rice mills that have just been built they will all fold up quickly
What we have competitive advantage we dont push......what happened to Obasanjos policy of achiving 20% cassava in all flour produced in Nigeria, dat policy alone would have shielded Nigeria from the Russian Ukrainian war effect on the prices of wheat but it was abandoned......
Nigeria is not positioned to be a rice producing nation but It could be a cassava producing nation, a palm producing nation but there is no body pushing this.....
Whats in everybody's head is how to sell a bag of rice that cost #2000 in India #50000 in Nigeria
