TravelRe: Should I Migrate Or Remain In Nigeria? by moremi2008(m): 2:05pm On Aug 22, 2011
A lot of people have given you really good advice. Look very well before you leap. In the process of chasing "dual-citizenship" for your children, you might end up losing your entire family. America is not a joke. It is merciless. Even friends and family that promise to "sponsor" you will kick you out after a few months if you aren't contributing anything to the household. Don't let anyone fool you that you can get a decent job on an F1 visa. It's a lie. If you're lucky, you will find a job that'll help with pocket-money and living expenses. Forget about about funding tuition/books with a student job for two reasons 1) the US is flooded with cheap labor from illegal Mexican immigrants. Things are so bad now, even the illegal Mexicans are heading back to Mexico. All the jobs that prior generations of Nigerian students used to support themselves are gone. Don't bring your family here on somebody's expired advice. 2) Good graduate programs in the US are difficult. I just don't see how you can work enough hours to pay tuition and still do well in class while remaining sane. Don't even contemplate bringing your family with you because that's going to be extra mouths to feed.

You should only consider coming to the US on an F1 visa if 1) You have enough money saved-up to pay for tuition/books and a little extra in case you can't find a job immediately and 2) Your wife has a good job and can support herself and the children back in Nigeria. Leaving your family in Nigeria is safer and saner - you won't have to worry about the extra mouths depending on you while you hustle and bustle and you will have a solid home base to return to in case things don't work-out as planned.

Good luck! And please, don't make the terrible mistake I have seen a lot of people make by leaving all in Nigeria in search of greener pastures in the US. Some of them live HORRIBLE lives here (even some with green cards).

. "If I had left the shores of Nigeria, I would not be what I am today and I may not have been in a position to take advantage of the boundless opportunities in Africa. The right people have been a critical ingredient in enabling me to actualize my vision and achieve set goals” said Mr. Elumelu.

This guys is talking porkies.

Tony, you had the chance to contribute to making Nigeria a great place. Instead you chose to prosper by providing vehicles to crooked politicians to rob the people of Nigeria blind. You succeeded big time from so doing. But what has the society got to gain from your efforts? The longest running oil boom of ages has left Nigeria with no medical facilities, no motorable roads, no power supply, unemployment at rates of more that 70%, no water supply, no security, no developments whatsoever. But it left crooked politicians and their collaborators like you stinkingly rich.

People left Nigeria for abroad not because they did not want to stay to contribute to making the country great, but because crooked Nigerians in privileged positions made it impossible for honest people to prosper in that society.

Even Akingbola and Cecilia would be sprouting the above garbage were it not for the fact that they were outed.

Tony, you are so great for our society that the Central Bank of Nigeria had to practically force you out of UBA.

Tony, you hammered big time in that country turned to a waste of space by people like you. But why not stay quietly somewhere to enjoy your own share of the loot rather than celebrating your so called "achievements" thereby adding salt to injury.
Finally, somebody with common sense and open eyes! Nigerians fall for so much PR nonsense! I am pretty sure Cecelia Ibru would have said the same things to these students if she hadn't been caught.

Something about this story is extremely fishy. Although delayed interval deliveries are possible, to have eight babies in evenly spaced intervals of exactly one-month in a country that has notoriously bad healthcare is beyond miraculous. This foolish woman is making up fantasies. Those babies were adopted or stolen.

What exactly are the benefits of having a representative in the highest political offices? I have searched high and low and I can't find it. The Igbo's are probably the smartest of the large ethnic groups. They have focused on what truly matters - building and developing strong local communities through infrastructure, commerce and education. With all their years in power, the North has not accomplished half of what Igbo's have accomplished. This aboki Musa man needs to mind his own business and work towards getting the almajiri off the streets instead of pretending to sympathize with the plight of an ethnic group that's collectively doing better than his. See pot calling china plates black!

As if the price-gouging in the cement market is not satisfactory. Nigerians now want Dangote to control Power. Massive groaning and suffering to soon follow. The truth is Nigeria has failed to develop the regulatory infrastructure to curb monopolies and Dangote is an example of that failure. Imagine somebody cornering the market for a commodity like cement in America and then charging 3x the market price!!! Ridiculous!

Sorry, but Kase is another prime example of Nigerians amassing wealth through shady deals and outright criminality. You don't have to dig too deeply and you'll find the rot.

Dangote is an evil monopolist. He would have been jailed for grievous antitrust violations in a well-functioning economy. Nigerians are going nowhere unless they start recognizing their slave masters and revolting. Dangote may be stupendously rich but he shouldn't be held-up as a role model to anybody.

There is little you can do for him except encourage him to seek professional and spiritual help. Alcoholism is a serious disease - it is especially dangerous because it kills either through the liver or through motor accidents. Treat this illness like you would treat cancer or AIDS. Go to a medical professional and pray hard.

In the meantime, please protect yourself. Talk to him while he is sober so both of you can agree on iron-clad rules you will follow if and when he comes home drunk. It might be a bit dangerous to let him sleep outside the fence but you can allow him to drive into the compound and sleep in his car or you can install an iron door to your bedroom and the kids' room that will keep him out of those rooms if he comes home drunk. Good luck!

A word is enough for the wise. Don't leave your job to get a master's in the UK unless you have a scholarship or have saved up enough money to pay for the degree and pay for your living expenses. I have friends  from well-to-do families that were sponsored by their parents to attend top unis in the UK and they could not find jobs there and had to come back home. These are people who didn't work for one second while studying and attended top schools. If you think you're going to find a job with your 2:1 degree from Open University, then you're just asking for trouble. You're better off trying to get into a better school in South Africa than wasting your money on diploma mills in the UK.

This sub-urban train running from Accra- Tema(a distance of about 35 miles) cost the Ghanian Goverment $35 million Dollars, How much is the Ojo -Marina line costing Lagos State Goverment- $500 million dollars. I am not glorifying Akala's reign, I am only saying the guy said he left no debt for the in-coming Goverment. It remains for the in-coming Goverment to refute his claim.

How do we reconcile Fashola's deceit over an inflated and bloated contract with those of Akala,  are they not birds of the same feather the only difference is Fashola is a " lovable rogue" and Akala is not. Are we not talking of the same Fashola that built Lekki at N1 billion per mile, abeg u people let us be objective,
undecided
Of course, Fashola is also a thieving scoundrel but Nigeria is so bad, that people will throw down a red carpet for a thieving scoundrel that is performing and doing something, anything, to move the country/state forward. Everybody knows that the Communist Party in China is rotten to the core with corruption but they look the other way because it is moving the country forward and the alternatives are 100x worse. I'll take Fashola over Akala and Obasanjo over Jonathan any day.

Lets face facts here, nobody is saying Akala does not inflate contracts awarded, like the N20 million Naira spent on/per  " poo-holes" in Ibadan but one thing I would give him thumbs up for is he did not put the state in serious debt. He spent what was giving him with reckless abandoned but did not go "a borrowing" to spend what he does not have, that I call greed.

At the last count,

Gbenga Daniel's Ogun State is owing N49 Billion and nothing on the ground to show, haba undecided

Mallam Shekarau of Kano is owing N110 Billion and nothing to show too. This was a man who had only N100,000.00 in his account when he first ran for office. No wonder he fell out " Buhari"  Ole jati jati- bloooody thief.

Fashola N154 Billion at least we are seeing the money spent albeit it at a very high and inflated rate. Does Lagos really have to borrow?  undecided

Governor Oni of Ekiti State gave out spurious contracts worth over N5 billion, I am not too sure wether it was borrowed money or the state money.  huh

There are others, can you guys on Nairaland furnish us with the other debtors leaving power, at times I wonder why would any sensible  credit institution borrow a broke and poor state like Ogun State N49 Billion that is almost £400 million pounds.  huh  undecided
You and your dirty mouth! You are enjoying stolen funds in the UK and then come on here to say rubbish like "we've been tough on" a flamboyant criminal. E no go better for you and your family!

Akala is a big scoundrel and he will be back to face EFCC in Jesus name.

We should not lose track of the bigger issue here. There are tons of Nigerians from all walks of life walking around with untreated mental illness. The doctor is clearly bipolar. I am sure his family has spent thousands of naira seeking miracles from false prophets to treat his condition instead of seeking medical treatment from a psychiatrist. Meanwhile, he is beating up his patients and generally posing a danger to society.

Where are you seeing maids who work without pay in Nigeria?! Most maids get a monthly salary + room, board, clothes etc. Perhaps you're confusing relations that come to stay with professional maids/houseboys.
Nairaland GeneralRe: Which Housemaid Would You Prefer? Male Or Female? by moremi2008(m): 9:08am On Mar 12, 2011
Male house helps are very dangerous. I really can't believe people are still naive enough to hire them. They not only molest your children (yes, they'll molest both your sons and daughters), they also organize armed robbers to come vandalize your house for a share of the loot. I have heard HORRIFIC stories about families that have live-in houseboys. Don't do it to yourself oh! The only thing you should be hiring a man for in your home is for driving, gardening and security and make sure they are NEVER come into your home and stay outside in the compound.

Female house helps vary. Some steal, some become neighborhood dogs (we had one house girl that would have all the bricklayers in the project next door take turns on her in the uncompleted building and another one ran away with our neighbour's driver!), some have evil spirits, some are slovenly (one house girl we had years ago would take a shower until my Mum threatened to beat her with a stick!!!! She just hated taking baths for some reason!), some will try to seduce your husband/ older son and some of them are just wonderful. We have had a few house girls in our house (one was Togo and the other was Hausa) that would come visit us regularly even after they got married and had their own kids! My Mum still can't shut-up about the wonders of Auntie Maria (an house girl we had in the late eighties when we were kids)! I remember the day she left us after 12yrs! My mum packed her bag full of brand new pots, plates, silver ware, blender, clothes, shoes and bags!!! It was so ridiculous that she came back to keep some of the stuff with us because there was no space in the car that would take her back to Togo! She came back to get them a year later with her new husband and my mum bought her even more stuff!

PLS: lets respect our marriage smiley.
It is the belief and advice of men like you that have made many a woman die in their matrimonial homes at the hands of their husbands. I don't know how to get it into your skull that it does NOT matter what the woman does - a man should not physically abuse his wife, period. If the wife is rude or cheats, there are civilized ways to deal with the issue. Just send her packing to her father's house! You can't control what she does but you can DEFINITELY control what YOU do in response to it. A man that beats on his wife deserves to be given a thorough beating and then gang-raped in a jail cell.

Ooooh, I dare one stupid man to lay his hands on my little sister. He go see wehn!!! The thought of it just makes my blood boil!!! I will deal with him so badly, my sister and her children will be pleading with me for his life!
FamilyRe: Help My Neighbor, Her Husband Beats Her Mercilessly And Threatens To Kill Her. by moremi2008(m): 10:08am On Mar 09, 2011
Let this be a warning to all women. Don't marry a man that has no master! Make sure any man you are serious about has somebody in his life that can control him (his parents or siblings). When you marry a guy, make sure you're also marrying his family and that they like you. They are your first recourse if he goes crazy and turns you into a punching bag! If your husband's family hates you, then make sure you own family is strong and able to support you for a while if things go wrong.

Most important, make sure you never put yourself in a situation where you can't walk away if he turns into an animal. This poor woman Deborah is now a prisoner in her matrimonial home and she will probably die if there's is no intervention. I hope she has family members that can support her through the ordeal.

My aunt was in a really bad marriage. Her husband was just a savage, insane, animal. Normally, she would hide it from us but when she received a particularly life-threatening beating, she came to us. Thankfully, we have lots of lawyers in the family. We promptly got him arrested and imprisoned for a day. That got him really sober. After that, the family rallied around her, helped her set-up a business, provided her with alternate accommodation while she gathered her life together. After 3yrs of separation, the man learned his lesson and came back begging. They are now back together but we are all keeping close watch. My aunt was lucky she had a solid family to run to. She would probably be dead by now.

Beautiful wedding and couple but something is a little off in terms of opulence especially for the only son of a man that rich , it seems like a regular N15-25mm Lekki/VI/Ikoyi wedding (the fact that they held the engagement and wedding on the same day doesn't help). Is Harry running for political office? That would explain the tight budget.
